today i got an interesting project for you i need to build a doorway and install a 36 inch hollow core door in this opening in previous videos you saw how i installed tile in the bathroom and this office area and that is where cats will be located this area where there's nice new carpet is to be a cat-free zone for a kid zone so i got to build a doorway here and also on the other side of the stairwell i got to build another doorway first thing i do when making a simple wall like this is i take my measurements and i draw it out on a piece of paper you can see all my measurements i even have measurements that account for the thickness of the top and bottom plate you don't want to get confused and measure from the floor to ceiling and cut your studs there you got to subtract the top and bottom plate everything is cut and now i'm gonna nail it together all you ladies out there i'm gonna need you to put your your masks on and your safety shields down [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music] uh all right [Music] um [Music] [Applause] it's time to put the drywall on and just wanted to point something out that some people might not be familiar with these are drywall shims i need to shim my new drywall out just a little bit on this side here so i'm going to put drywall shims down this stud i think it'll be fine on the back side i'm going to use a stapler to put them up oh that's perfect you don't need to go overboard on the staples because you're going to screw drywall to it and they'll be held in place by the screws i pre-cut all the drywall up in the garage and and brought it down not much to it just use a utility knife score it and snap it i also use a chalk line for making the long cuts now i'm going to use my impact my old school 18 volt xrp impact a lot of people love to jump to the comments and tell me what tools i need you need a drywall specific screw gun handyman i've got one it's up in the trailer works great that is for a large volume of drywall a couple screws and a doorway just doesn't justify the walk to the trailer and back that's why i use an impact for attaching drywall on small repairs not going to make a special trip just to get a drywall screw gun to show off my drywall screw gun now that that's settled we can move on oh oh um [Music] uh [Music] [Music] uh i got the door loosely fit in there and it's kind of racked this way and that's just because of the weight of the door and the hinges over here so what i'm going to do is use some wood shims to get it all squared up in the doorway you always want to shoot the nail through the shims i'm also going to screw a screw through the hinge i'm going to remove one of the the screws that it came with and replace it with a long one that goes into these studs and i will also make sure that area is also shimmed when i put that screw in right now we're just kind of tacking it in place okay at this stage it's just had a few nails in it tacked in the corners and that's it and what you want to do is close the door and check your gaps and you can tweak the corners you can bump bump a corner that way bump a corner this way just a little bit to make sure that door is closing flush against your doorstop right here in the middle i've got to put some shims around where the latch is and i'll shoot a nail or two in there so that is too tight bring that over right about there and i also got to bring the bottom over a little bit [Music] nicely all right that's the end of this video it's not the end of the project though so you're gonna want to hit the subscribe button and the bell so you know when the next video is i've got to finish the drop ceiling doing a little bit of modifications up there i've got to blend this wall to this wall got to put the trim on put the door knob in and i also have to paint it thanks for watching goodbye
