have you ever noticed that one side of your face looks different than the other it's almost like there's two different versions of you there's the you that you know and love that you see in the mirror and then the one that shows up when you take a picture with a front facing camera or when you're on a zoom call or a webinar today we're talking about facial asymmetry and what you can do to correct it [Music] i'm not sure why this is but when you fix your facial asymmetry you will look a lot better there have been studies that have been done that show that one of the most attractive aspects to someone's face is actually symmetry i know for myself that since i've fixed my facial asymmetry i think that i look a lot better for example when i smile in photos i can see that my smile is more even my jaw looks more even this definitely makes me look better right there's one other super important benefit to improving your symmetry that is your ability to do mewing properly when you're doing newing you want both sides of your tongue and your entire tongue to be pushing up on your palate what happens if one side isn't working properly now you don't have the force of your whole tongue pushing up on your palate and you're not going to get as good results over time you wouldn't believe it i would say 60 to 70 percent of people that i talk to and have questions for me are asking how to fix asymmetry i'm gonna be going deep in this video there's gonna be three main parts part one is explaining why asymmetry happens in most cases what is the underlying cause part two we're going to do some assessments that you can do at home and i'm going to do them along with you to help you determine which side of your tongue and of your jaw is the worst and better side and then i'm going to give you some tutorials and exercises to show you how i corrected this for myself and how i've helped other people correct this as well so let's get into it so i'm sure you can already guess the cause of asymmetry in most cases is your tongue now obviously it's not all cases some people have a genetic difference between left and right side of their face but most cases it's because of your tongue people who have less than adequate facial growth also usually have some degree of asymmetry when your tongue falls back and it drops from your palate it tends to push up more on one side than the other you can imagine if you grow up and live your whole life with one side of your tongue pressing more on your palate that side is going to develop better the other side is going to develop worse because it doesn't have the support of your tongue that's what creates the asymmetry another very important element to understand about this is the way that you swallow we swallow 600 to a thousand times per day if every time you swallow one side of your tongue is dominating that movement and pressing up more against your palate that side of your maxilla is going to develop better and the side that's not getting that pressure is going to develop worse the first test we're going to do is determining the better and the worst side of your face many of you already know which side of your face is the better side and which is the worst side you've seen it in photos you're very aware of which side of your profile you like better for those of you who aren't as familiar with which side of your face is better than the other one there's a tool that you can use and a website that actually takes a photo of your face and creates two images with a mirror image of both sides of your face when you do this you'll notice that one of those images looks better your face will look more developed on one side and that is how you can figure out which is the better side test number two we are going to be testing for the strength of your tongue we want to find out which side of your tongue is the stronger side which is the one that is more dominant and which side of your tongue is the weaker side the one that's not pushing up as much and we need to get active in order to begin to correct the facial asymmetry that was caused by this imbalance this exercise we're going to do is called the forced swallow what i'm going to get you to do is take the tip of your thumb and use it to separate your teeth bite on the tip of your thumb separate your lips and then swallow what you'll notice is you're taking your lips out of the equation so only your tongue can be used to initiate that swallow what i want you to pay attention to is which side of your tongue is dominating that swallowing movement for example when i do it what i notice is that on the right side of my tongue my tongue is pressing against my back molars so i feel it pushing up on the back of my palate whereas on the left hand side i feel only the front of my tongue pushing up when i swallow that tells me that more of my tongue is being used on the right side and the right side is the dominant side of my tongue this may be difficult for you to realize because like a fish in water we don't really pay attention to how we swallow we just do it hundreds of times per day and you can also do this when you're just at rest for example when you're just relaxing or when you try to do mewing and push your tongue up on your palate which side feels easier to push up especially the back third do you notice that on one side it's easier to push the back third of your tongue up on your palate that means that it's your stronger side of your tongue now that you have this information i want you to write down the worst side of my face is my left side and the weak side of my tongue is my left side so now you're beginning to get a complete picture of what's going on here the next test we will do is for the muscles of your neck if you have an imbalance in the muscles of your tongue it will follow throughout your entire body and you'll be able to see it in your neck the side of your face that is better developed with better tongue position will actually have better neck posture and the side of your tongue that's not working properly will have more forward head posture this creates a situation where your head will be tilted and rotated and that's why some people notice that one of their eyes is higher on one side than the other but that's just because their head is tilted and rotated because of this imbalance so the way that we're going to test this is you're going to go to the wall stand with your heels your butt and your shoulders touching that wall now what i want you to do is i want you to bring your head and neck directly back so that the back of your head is flat touching against that wall what you're probably going to feel of course is you're going to feel a good stretch but now what i want you to do is also push your tongue on the roof of your mouth gently while you do this i want you to notice which side of your neck feels tighter on which side of your neck do you feel more of a stretch and also notice pushing your tongue up which side is it easier to push your tongue up and it's probably going to be the same answer you got in the last test now we have all three of our tests you would say for example the left side of my face looks worse the left side of my tongue is the weaker side and the left side of my neck is tighter so now we have more of a complete picture of what's going on so we can begin to correct this problem just as a side note if you have this asymmetry it's going to flow through the rest of your body and your spine as well meaning very likely that same side that has worse posture one of your shoulders will be higher it may be rotated in and you may have a tighter hip on one side hamstring on one side it will just flow through your entire body so that's another thing to notice but i don't want to overwhelm you with information so for now just pay attention to those three tests that we did and now we're going to move into how to correct this how do we begin to correct this asymmetry well i'm sure that it's pretty obvious right if we have one side of our tongue that's not functioning properly we need to get that side of our tongue functioning properly especially when you swallow that's going to be the key because again we swallow hundreds and hundreds of times per day if you can even out that swallowing motion on both sides if you can get your tongue pressing evenly on both sides of your palate that is how you can begin to correct this asymmetry that is how you can get a more symmetrical face and also just get better results with mewing in general because it's super super important that both sides of your tongue and your entire tongue is pressing up by strengthening and doing exercises for the weaker side of that tongue and for stretching to stretch the tight side of your neck now we're going to go to video number two where i am going to give you these step-by-step tutorials and exercises i've used to correct my facial asymmetry and i've helped lots of other people to use as well so head to video number two and i'm going to show you how to do those exercises [Music] [Music] you
