How To Fix a Water Leak Under the Cap of an Outdoor Faucet

if you've ever wondered what this little cap is on your outdoor spigot that houses a vacuum breaker underneath there and what it does is it stops the water from flowing back into your water supply and it can be a common source of leaks from right underneath this cap so today I'm going to show you how to fix that if you can't tell if you've got a leak around that vacuum breaker the easiest way I've found is to cap the water supply and you can find one of these on us most common sprinklers or you can just go down to the hardware store and pick one up for a couple of bucks so if you put this cap right on here and then turn your water supply on if you have a problem with this vacuum breaker you'll see water coming out around here I actually don't have a problem with this but it's about 30 years old so I'm going to replace it anyway just as a preventative maintenance you can pick up these vacuum breaker replacement kits at the hardware store and it basically just has a replacement cover and then the plastic vacuum breaker that's inside of there they cost about eight or nine bucks so we're going to do is we're just going to put a screwdriver under here and pop this cap off it came off real easy then we're just going to grab this plastic thing with a pair of vice grips and gently turn it off you can see inside of here there's a little plunger that goes up and down this little plastic piece in here and that's what prevents the water from back flowing so I'm just going to rip open this new kit and there's the replacement piece see this one's a little different but it should fit right in there it's just sealed up here on the end so screw this back in you only really need it about finger tight you can go a little bit tighter if you want to go just a quarter turn or something and then we can put the cap back on the vacuum breaker isn't the only source of leaks on these faucets if you have a leak still that's coming from the behind the handle take a look at this video right here and see if I can help you with that
