so i've run into a little bit of a snag at the end of my seating project i just put down all my seed in the areas where the trees used to be everything was going well got the sprinklers connected for the year i flipped the switch to turn the sprinklers on and a big gush of water comes from underneath the ground so i dug it up and i've got a broken sprinkler pipe probably from when i was hacking out all the different tree roots and the stump and all that stuff i must have hit it with the axe yes [Music] yes so if you're like me you don't like hiring people to do things for you i figured i can fix this on my own so that's what i'm going to do today so today i'm going to show you how i'm going to fix this sprinkler pipe that's underground if you have a similar situation you could use the same strategy that i use my beautiful seated area is no longer beautiful like i said once i turned that sprinkler on i had a huge gush of water and if you have underground irrigation anytime that happens if you see a bunch of water you got like a water bubble underneath your grass you probably have a broken sprinkler line and it's not that difficult to fix i got all the parts to do this at lowe's for about i think it was eight dollars so not the end of the world it is annoying but we'll get it fixed hopefully so let's give this a shot so the first tool that i'm using is actually something that's a little bit unorthodox but this is one of the dollar store water guns that my kids play with and it's a great way to get all the water out of the area where you're going to be working because if you can't get that out of there you can't see where the pipe is to get to everything you want to make sure that you give yourself some room to work with the pipe a little bit so wherever the crack is or wherever the break is give yourself at least six inches on each side because you're going to need to be able to move that pipe a little bit so i got this dug up and i found the area where the pipe is broken you can see right here there's a split right there and there's one right here too so to fix this i need to cut off and i'm going to take my sawzall i'm going to cut off right here and then just pass on this end too past where that crack is because the water is gushing out of here so i'm going to put a coupling in there i've got what's called an internal coupling that's going to go inside the pipe over here and then another internal coupling on this side [Applause] here's a better look you can see exactly where the axe went through this pipe and that's definitely my problem so i've got the old piece cut out now what i need to do is i need to put a new piece in but in order to do that i need a coupling and this is called an internal coupling and this is going to go inside of that old pipe and i'm going to use a hose clamp to connect that onto there using a rubber mallet would probably be best for this now i've got the coupling inserted so i'm going to use a hose clamp to make sure that i hold that coupling tight against the sprinkler pipe next thing i need to do is take the spare part the 1 inch sprinkler line and i'm going to put that onto the coupling and with that i'm going to make sure that i already have a hose clamp on there because once i get it on there i want to be able to slide that hose clamp on and tighten this end up so i've got one side installed i got the hose clamps on both sides now i need to go across and i need to look and see exactly where i need to cut this pipe you don't want to cut it too short but you also don't want to make it too long because you're not going to be able to get it over the coupling there we go now this is like one continuous piece just like it was before now that i'm done i'm going to turn the sprinklers on just to make sure that there's no leaks anywhere in here before i cover this back up with the dirt and also one thing i would recommend is the next sprinkler head in the line so where everything's getting washed to take the head off of that but you want to clear that line out because if you have any dirt or little tiny rocks or anything that got in there that could cause problems so take that head off and let it flush it out all right so i ran the sprinklers everything's looking good now i need to replace that dirt and try to compact everything down because if you don't try to compact it you're going to have settling over time so i'm going to stomp that in and try to get it really compacted that way everything's nice and smooth the way i want it replace that seed and hopefully this will start growing so it's been three weeks since i fixed that broken sprinkler pipe and things are coming back to life look you can barely tell where the tree was the cutout's starting to fill in the grass is germinating things are looking good so if you're ever in that situation you get a broken underground sprinkler pipe you don't have to call somebody to come fix it you can do it on your own thanks so much for watching this video i appreciate it and i'll see you next time
