so you want to replace your garden gate well first of all we need a gate this is a six foot by three foot gate screws security bolt hinges latch tape measure drill and drill driver and a trusted spirit level before you fit any gate we need to make sure that the gate frame is the right size now I know this one's the right size because I made it what I did is I made this gate frame 20 mil wider than the gates because obviously timber expands and retracts and it just stops there being any problems up further down the line so while we're on the subject of the gate frame it's really important that the posts where the gates going to go are perfectly level and also I've added a piece of two by one button the thickness of the gate in both sides to form a rebate this will stop the gate from going too far so what's next day you ask well firstly we need to fix the hinges to the gate now where do these go now with this particular gate this is what we call a frame gate and these diagonals are what give it support now we're very lucky with this gate because it doesn't matter which side we put the hinges on but if it's a gate with just one diagonal the bottom of the diagonal piece of timber is the side the hinges go on right so let's fit the hinges now and we've gone for these bloomer galvanized T hinges galvanized means they're going to last a bit long and they're not going to rust but firstly what I did is I found the center of these pieces of timber here and we're going to use three hinges on this gate because it's quite a large gate just to give it a bit make it a bit more robust and then what we're going to do here now if you can see those little niches at the end of the hinge there they are going to go level with the outside of the gate making sure we see that centre line through the center holes so let me get some screws we're going to be using these 25 by 4 mil screws we're going to do this with all three hinges so that's all three hinges on what we need to do now is put the gate into the frame and what I'm going to use is I'm going to use this to be one timber here to sit the gate onto to make sure there's plenty clearance underneath so there's no obstructions when its opening and closing so if I drop those down there like so we put the gate into the frame and then what we do is we make sure that the gate is evenly spaced so we've got the same gap either side we're going to put the screws in the hinges now and a good tip here is not to put all the screws in every hinge just put a couple in each hinge until we're absolutely sure with the gates opening properly and it's all working fine so that's opening and closing really nicely if you can see so we can put all the rest of the screws in so what we're going to do now we're going to shut the gate latch we've chose this one now there's quite a few parts to it that bit there is what it actually latches into and that goes onto the gate frame and we've got these two parts that need to go onto there like that now it's quite a small area to fit it all in so it's worth spending a few minutes working it out so I've worked out that we need to drill a hole layer right through to the outside that's big enough to take this connecting bar this is the bar that connects the inside handle to the outside animal so we can open it from both sides so that's the latch on and for a bit of security we're going to put a shoot bolt on and we're going to fit this at the center of the gate here I've marked a center line there now a good tip is you don't want to put it off here because somebody could put the hand over and undo it so we've gone for they're nice and safe let's get it on so there we go the gates done looks really good nice and secure I'm off you
