[Music] well we had a good run almost made it a hundred episodes who's going to host the show when we're dead [Music] the mountain robe gets real under dude it's happening we're here at the Austin historical weapons guild with Anthony and Bryant good to see you guys we're actually going to learn how to fight with long sword yeah we're doing long swords all day long this is an honest-to-god scientific martial art yes we are looking at books manuals written in the 14th the 16th century guys who actually fought with these weapons lived by these weapons and interpreting creating our own techniques based off of what they described so we are in a sense time traveling back to a time when this was the highest weapons technology available yes absolutely absolutely I want to be able to separate the fact from the myth can you cut someone's leg off and they jump around it's only a flesh wound that's fact I saw that on a documentary where I've seen that same documentary completely completely factual I want to know if there's all these flourishes and spinning Jedi stuff or if it's just I'm in a metal cocoon swinging a blade and another guy no did I Mind Tricks backflips not interested horses going to Rio no good question are there horses not here but they do exist I think so are there dragons yes I told you kilometres there were dragons consorted can I trust you with you know yes yes oh my god okay so immediately I see differences on the handles I've got spiky things I got a lumpy thing and this one has nothing so quick quick dirty basics blade yeah point right easy stuff everyone's probably with quill Ian's handle and your pommel is about quick William Williams seems like with the hilt this whole thing is to help oh okay it has quillian handle pommel got it gotcha though the pommel tears of the counterweight it has its own job never grab the pop oh wow thanks from starting the cuts I have what we call a blunt so it is made to look more sword like than what you guys are playing with it does have a much wider edge than a true sort of have it's also got a much narrower taper so it's not going to as much of a point as quickly as a true sword for obvious safety reasons so in a true sword version of this I assume everything will be sharp but how much does it matter on the sides for slicing verses at the point for poking both oh so long story are used for slashing also we call queueing like things and thrust it got it two weeks yeah it's not a fun word yeah I like it yeah I had actually heard that it was the weight of the sword that does a lot of damage I think that might be a miss though yes ramming the blade II sit around three to four pounds yeah this isn't so there we're header fairly light there fairly well balanced so you guys are dealing with fetish works which means feather story so you can feel the point of balance of these is way back there they're inch inch-and-a-half right on what the sword is this one the blunt here is probably close to two to three inches and that's again more for safety and a true sword is probably in the floor to nine inch range historically for where that point of balance is and that's going to control how hard you hit how much of that weight transfers through into the cut lots of different types lots of different types and even though term long sword is immunity in particular a story with a sword back then and they're mostly names we've added after the fact that mean different things okay because you always hear like mostly from like video games the Dungeons and Dragons Claymore master bastards I who had a broadsword exactly back then it was probably this is your ass play this is Harry's are really big here's a sword it bears mentioning that these have these safety tip X oh no you can see there's a lot of flex in this last third of the blade which is physically done designed to make our sparring safer and less less dangerous so regular dangerous swords don't don't don't think that nearly as much got it so they do have some game and it's mostly uniform throughout because you don't want a brittle weapon right some flex and give to it but generally they're much stiffer and where did you get these so there are a huge number of different chemo suppliers chemo chemo there are three practices Hema historical European martial arts and it's a huge catch-all for anything early as probably 1200 when the 133 plates come out up to people look at 18th century favor stuff and do saber and calorie type okay so it's a broad scope of historical European martial arts to distinguish from Eastern martial arts awesome okay so where do we begin probably holding the sword first and foremost again you want your dominant hand up right underneath peak William off hand underneath it again not grabbing the pommel now why is it important to grab the Palmer gives Apollo said the pommel does its own job it helps counterbalance your sword okay so I'm thinking too much time outgrowing the pommel like making it do this lever action mm-hmm this towards not acting by itself I have a better chance of messing up the edge alignment the tunas of the strike okay so I can throw with just one hand because the pommel is there like this and so it stops for me oh it does sure the basics of our first strike is throwing this cutout here and letting that cut just fall through straight by itself okay so so so we start here and then to help keep the grip loose I recommend just pinching with the bottom fingers of both your hands and not choking the up on it okay you want fast loose flexible hands Algy it's just a straight push and let the side move by itself okay yeah right and if you're having trouble getting that snap and the Congress feels like you're pushing out and dropping it yeah open up your right fingers and clench with your left fingers only so like this so now when you push oh wow that is if real how that lever is straight through now it takes all the action out of the wrist because when I was doing it before it was too risks moving through molasses but once you take the risks out of it okay it really is just a snap and your natural instinct is to squeeze with your index and your thumb you got it and you want to keep that loose yeah and it's also include the benefit they're doing learning it this way is you get the tip moving first if I go like this to rut then I'm putting my hands wrists arms all in danger if I get destroyed out there first now I'm covering protected this isn't only your weapon it's your shield right well I assume also if you're doing this you're telegraphing your yeah a lot more aware as you want you want there you go a quick that quick snap through so keeping that in mind I always teach keep at least from this first cutting position keep the sword birth okay we're not starting back on the shoulder got it vertical what's up I'm gonna start picking on footwork now this is this is so critical and crucial to everything we base a lot of footwork off of wrestling and grappling so how we're going to stand is our feet just outside of our shoulders and we bought a foot of space between this heel and this toe front to back that's not a foot not diagonally that was not one to back got it got it got it okay I'm from the back so we're starting the real problem they're starting like this then going outside got overweight there's the goal this is all motions we want to be lateral we don't want to move straight forward we always move left and right with our cuts what does that mean so I don't want to take this big step like this uh-huh whenever I make this cut on a move off line Oh the corner you want it you want to oblique Lee approach anything and the nice benefit of having feet outside your shoulders as soon as this foot comes up it starts moving that way so you start getting that automatic slow and smooth slide around into everything okay it's you want to step forward like in a what else the other important thing and it can be hard to pick up I promise because it's awkward from everything you've ever done in your life hands move first and we are not landing with our time so this is this is the wrong way to emphasize right everyone is this big like huge like slams aisle and with it I cuss do I go down to the ground we're assuming bla second we're assuming a little more than we're wearing now maybe long sleeves maybe some gloves we're unarmed Street fine armored Street dueling so you need to throw this out first keep this safe and then walk behind your clear space so if you just think of it in terms I'll keep them at the pointy end I mean to reduce it to a semantic level that's a very effective strategy to make sure they don't come running up to you yeah I mean to be close enough to hit them the other thing my first strike my distance so if you're having that posture that we were in before and square up towards me okay so don't move at all okay my first cut if I do it properly the end right here whoa yeah okay I'm not trying to hit you I'm trying to make sure I can get close enough to hit you safely because if I'm here and I'm able to hit you with this that you can hit me control yes so my first concern in the sword fight is don't get hit right a lot of it it seems like you're using your sword to measure distance to keep them keep them away keep keep yourself safe the nice part is getting that timing down of getting used to throwing the sword stepping behind it it's bare a drill that we could practice to make sure that we got everything so my favorite way of getting people to learn this timing down and I'll demonstrate first so you don't feel stupid alone so I'm going to plant my feet and forget everything I just talked about okay I'm going to swing as hard as I can but try not to step I'm gonna go like this and eventually put myself through so I'm going big swing step through what I'm looking to feel is the kinetic chain down my back through my hips down to my leg before I also take that step so I need this big motion here I feel my shoulder isn't across like that ventually because I'm throwing so much into this this turns which turns up the tip which ultimately makes me take a step and so you do want to end up taking the step that means you're doing it right yes because everything's happening in the sword and your body right just like a chain being too old so right so instead of feeling change this way like we're all used to we're feeding the chain from the backside so doing this big stupid motion got it you learn to feel that muscle connection so now when I throw up properly instead of resisting that millisecond before you feel that muscle pull you feed into it so the sword is always leading it's the body that it was just doing the natural follow-through yep and it's just throw it out there it's counterintuitive follow after and so if you're going to have the sword lead that makes it all the more important that it be these upfront guys making all the decisions Yeah right so here you want to you want practice yeah okay so fake your stance nice and wide we're up against position shut up so feed us out your shoulders nice wide stance mm-hmm bend your knees both feet facing forward okay and keep your short vertical Burkle yes Ryan just big big dumb stupid cut pull yourself out BAM oh yeah how'd you wearing like a bear suit or something or I'm gonna just I'll be yeah I protect you so you're starting to feel that like yeah resistance across your shoulders down the hip so now throw that proper cut with that push but now feel that timing and throw into instead of resisting through it yeah ah yeah okay it'll take some practice to get the timing just right I said it can it's so Connor dude everything you've done before but you can start to feel like you said the muscles that kinetic chain yeah as far as like my elbows and how I'm holding it I'd really the bench press I've seen the proper way perfect you want shrug your shoulders up push them back press them down and you want this proud chest a superhero chest that works better for you sure because now you can transfer all that power from your core down your arms okay and your arms do very little work when you're doing this bend your knees and stick your ass that more yeah yeah dude that looks way different by the way we'll try yeah all right let me get over here and probably be ablaze firstly the big stupid swing yeah that you can just grab and like pull yourself so like this perfect complete unbalance is exactly what we're looking for okay good so do that again we're boy it really does it just pulls your body like a thread remember when Brian was impaled at one time most fun Wow okay alright so now you've gotten a feeling in you're going to take that initial push it in for and tie in that same step you just did super you're opposed so that's right superheroes well leave your arms out further okay but fix your stance you've narrowed up you fall them back - everyone wants to do the rapier stand outside your feet square got it chest forward thank you for them how like turning your blade like this try to keep it along a 45 degree yeah that's like the header we can't even work with it we can run with it can you real quick just give us so we have a time - yeah from here again throw it up proud chest yeah see the pose look goofy as hell but no he looks handsome and debonair in a charge oh right but it makes sense though and this is something everybody right now could just grab a broom handle and celebrex absolutely I always tell you kid when I come out like don't worry about getting a sword right away take your broom handle any long sword like object and start swinging around get used to moving something weird in your hands much like we learned with Brazilian jiu-jitsu there are a number of steps you have to remember to make it work exactly as it's supposed to right so notice this face is roughly on my solar plexus I'm braced I'm strong everything's braced against because again this is this is your attack and your defense I already started swinging so each other's faces now that's that's the next step so lineup busy we just work them yeah so again up up by your shoulder keep it up right square up towards me so don't move we talk to you through this first so I'm going through this first cut again I'm right here I'm in a little bit closer oh boy do I want it yeah if you don't react it's really easy just finish the thrust fights over and never even started yeah well my first cut is here keep myself safe because you're gonna wind up taking you cut as you do see me step you're gonna react to that extreme cut you just did mm-hmm right and again you want to brace your arms down there a bit more you feel the structure now oh yeah and keep your back pressed yeah so now you can relax your hands and drive through with your core oh yeah right so this first cut if we both throw that free space cut we just went through which we call them over how or overhead strike an over our over how we're gonna want up in this position this is called the bond we'll get into this and play with this a little bit but first getting used to the idea of counter cut it it's called the bind yes when the swords are touching is the bind they're bound they're touching now we're going to play in the early German lesson our tradition the bind is where most the fight happens so I'm kind of cutting so I'm going to the cut as you see me started to have a cut throw the cut of your own okay you ready mm-hmm oh this is the part where I start cackling maniacally yeah use that you are fighting for my love if you let yes you are in charge of this because your stance is better and you have better balance I'm leaning more it's that you've got not using your core anymore yeah you've broken like this yeah rather than yeah and then thing you stick your hips out mm-hmm like that to lean forward from your waist Oh back up and now you can drive in right and it's no arm yeah it's all from the core I was half a second from getting my head cut off so now you attack first okay and I'll kind of cut it used and will swit you guys out oh wow yeah okay yeah if you maintain your pose you have much control over your balance and I doing fun things like this whoa or whatever else along Highlander that's it there can be only one in a day all right here Gate okay so same thing I'm gonna throw the cut first huh will let you stand there see it okay kind of kind of just alright so I throw my cut here I'm gonna finish here whoo okay and if anything you're Janet it's just coming up like the heading at me not at my blade okay all right put him in a body bag Anthony all right so go right now yeah hi here we go oh geez all right wow you got it right up on there all right so feel good yeah one more time all right I'm holding really excited I feel like I'm gonna hit you it is rejuvenating it right over close I don't okay so she'll be back yeah oh yeah been your weight yeah so drive drive through from the core you feel the difference now man yeah I didn't realize you guys were doing a muscle contest during this moment and it's not even really that you're trying to overpower him at that moment it's just that for me anyway was I realized how vulnerable I was from this versus this yeah changes everything is it called a isometric exercise when it's like you're not actually moving anything you're just pushing up against it and that's all something in luck yeah yeah yeah no I'm gonna cut of you first okay you see me cut so that they make the cut again it's just to this yep okay just that nothing nothing thank you so you know you're come out cutting at me right oh yes I can do this well and that's the temptation that's a lifetime of sword fighting with my brother you don't actually swing at the guy yeah but of course that's not what you want and a lot of a lot of stage combat people do some of this to take back the stage combat and they struggle because it's so disparate worlds yeah unify go stage combat is like I'm swingin here I'm seeing here right I make this cut there and doing does it drive you crazy whenever you see that I don't think your personal is a god that's secure all right so trying again I'm gonna cut you are you ready I didn't go to your face right here I mean fine I get hit you in it's your school after that okay okay H Brian I'm sorry yeah is that better yes man and now I feel my whole core I've got the lower center of gravity I feel very very grounded push your shoulders I yeah and then even more so now you can lean in yeah the back and core are working with it as well that's a minute and I don't feel it in my wrists or I mean it's really my body doing all the work that's room and even even if you want tucking your elbows a little bit yeah oh that's great Wow okay can we try that again yeah so you're gonna cut first and I'm gonna how to cut it you all right here we go I was timid and I also grabbed at my body you I know yeah we're kind of leaning back yeah follow through yeah okay here we go ready oh my goodness are you cutting okay okay I got to go for you I got to go for you I it's my school my school okay now I'm a little bit overextended so I feel I'm we and you know why looking are good is yeah your foot is straightforward and you did over commit this way got it alright here we go Oh God that was a full-on swing that he blocked that was amazing you guys ready to each other now let's see what the grown okay like first show it yeah so we'll do a couple basics then we'll do some more fun stuff too great what happens and like just teaming up the space counter cutting drill not so still do basically yet we call this counter cutting because we're drilling that reaction to when they're throwing a cutting you step it in cutted them okay is that's the way to safety quick question when you're practicing without armor how do you know to pull your slices so that you don't injure each other because at the one point you want to attack at the body right for effective technique but at the other hand you're liability insurance would be very high right I mean it's just comfort with the weapon I know if I throw this right here I can stop it like because I'm not doing this kind of hacking swing it's easy to throw this sharp everything is controlled but but just relax the arms and pull it back that last split second and obviously yeah right like anything to the face in the head we pull back an extra foot just to keep it there good I knew some fun stuff ha no you testing and then working from other guards which being talked about with you guys and catch so by writing in surmising that in real life sword battles were very brief like that seems like it was a one two maybe three move chess match and then it was over yep I mean there's literally just a flick of the wrist separating life from death well what's funny is even though neither of us are the combatants I can see that split second of hesitation I can watch I'm like oh it's over he's not going to you know there's something instinctual in yeah so we'll walk you guys through we have a cut calling mechanic okay for safety sake so basically if I work with new guy if he's attacking me I say cut to announce that I'm wrecking how I say cut tells him how to attack me so if I go cut got it we can work with that however if it's like cut got it I'll come with a forest power no matter how much you yell do you keep it like 60% so Kubica do keep it safe but keep it fun right I feel like a stage okay hold your position and step forward and make sure you at the right range you want to be like right about here when you finish that step arms down break it out yeah yes sir over there pretty good and now you're both in a safe position to cut and not hit each other and they call up cut doesn't mean I'm attacking you means I'm ready to attack me got it okay cut oh now I can tell you were dodging my head you get the adrenaline flowing and like with anything like this all of the things you start to learn starts slipping away really easily if you haven't practiced I'm on the right way and you've got to internalize it make it pure muscle memory yeah cut oh it's because you're cutting it - blade and you're like leaning in backing away like that yeah slip off and over well you think I trust you to block I don't trust him to block and I don't want to poke his face off likewise cut and I overextended you have the dominant position I'm overextended as well okay so both of that I overdid it you're leaning backwards with yours yeah I was scared of the blade which is why we do this exercise without gear on to get used to it because one of the things I talk about is you know basically if you're if you're not courageous fencing for you yeah because you can feel as you start powering away your structure falls apart and you're dead cut that was the best one I still did it at the same time you're still like this where I'm II believe so he's still stepping right into South yeah I need to go off to the side okay the one thing I poke I'm doing that too but to a lesser extent cut yeah that feels much better yep oh yeah I get close to you know done you close you know okay I was fine okay Tim yeah you want to try me you calling yes wounds for me to cut gosh weirding SH out there man cut I took it slow trying to kill him she's still kind of like you're coming at him actually yeah yeah good oh that was much better I felt better yeah I still I still overstepped and I still refused to swing in your face I'm sorry very hard we just flight okay good that felt good I was still too high yeah I get oh you're getting here mm-hmm start up at your shoulder and push down yeah instead of down here and set it up yeah okay that was awesome yeah that was awesome you spend so much time or I do anyway so much time focusing on getting one element of it right to be others first screams oh I didn't factor it being so emotionally draining like like just being there at the ready like had a trigger hairs trigger you know like I'm at you like being in a starting block that attract me yeah it's ratings ready for the actual fight yeah the lines of the fight actually happened so I'm going to break down the blade a little bit more than my nonchalance go answer earlier so growth plate is strong and weak okay we also have what we call the long edge of the short edge lolly decoders are really cool as nothing to the blade itself I'll do with your biomechanics all right so by long is my knuckle edge if it's forward you're just in range right I'm even short edge around so it's like forehand and backhand yeah do that again long edge oh okay long edge short edge and it's just my shoulder rotating into the socket so short edge is weaker but I'm sure that lets me do things like this where even if you're if you're parried on my blades here I can come over this and go around it and change the angle yeah this I can go over here with vs. my long-headed is priced at ya and that's where we saw everything turn in a heartbeat when you guys were sparring yeah when I do that that quick over here like this all sudden a lot of cool things start happening so the other thing is the strong and weak obviously is just giant lever Strait physics so if we're bound right and I get my strong on your weak oh yeah oh yeah so it's a leverage contest yep and then conversely if I'm down here no matter how hard I push yeah nothing's gonna happen yeah perfect world see how this will now past my face past your face and the tips are pretty much useless right but if I do something fancy I can try getting the tip in there or realistically I'm here I'm not going to do that give me something else so this is vine work also called pooling or feeling and if this idea of knowing what the stores are doing without looking at it got it your eyes are slow you have to look at it see what's happening cause it's not too reaching the blind swordsman yes exactly however I'm here I can know exactly where your sword is without looking at your sword we're not even right now starting off and worried about trying to hit the other person right it's getting used to the feeling of the flow of the blades and so what should his objective be when he's feeling you searching for an opening it's good word choice of words openings of search that opening search for the place where you can make the attack but really the goal is he should know like what this feels like can I do this where does that put him welcome to view from this position right so you're not even pushed I got because I'm stronger than your weak oh yeah you're on weak oh you're here you can step forward get your strong involved go to my weak just step forward of my left like that or do I either way this is one things you really can't teach you have to practice you know there's techniques we can talk about there's good ideas bad ideas but I want to find difference in you're gonna fight different he's gonna fight and then he's gonna fight right now we're going to have their own things that work better for them feel better for them give it a feel see ok so don't watch you're sorry we're right right hey look at you so you're on your weak edge right now you want to and do you disengage you can't that valid ok ok and then and I like that oh yeah you can start feeling it every inch along like this matters yeah so some of the later rapier stuff break the snow down those twelve parts got it get your photon fit seven and do this correctly yeah we do - we do - we keep it simple every little tiny bit of leverage changes it and the other thing is the point is going hard and going soft right so if I go hard I'm doing this and I'm walking him out yeah so his reaction be going hard should be going soft where you pull the sword away back away does something else right yeah and make the cover from there and it's just finding that flow hard versus soft he pushes back there's something it's really tempting to watch that's right a little bit if you do it I have a thinking like to do to people who do that you must oh good okay so we're about alright do you want do it now I've tried I thought I got yeah I'll look at my sword okay like an amateur yes naughty humor you a very fun I'll do it soon as I see him that lucky the story yeah I like to go like this and like cuz obviously this is a dirt bike yeah but oh you're not supposed to I know yeah but nothing's off-limits right right so there's no reason that says I can't if we're doing this I apologize in the van okay I'm doing this oh yeah yeah there's nothing that says I can't do this so I'm gonna sword fight but guess what now now we're gonna grapple I don't need this anymore are you thinking sword fight still less - bag it's not working - grapple ah oh you totally you totally shifted my way because I'm still focused on this yeah who in the grappling contest in the sword fight the guy who realized they're grappling first yeah okay alright so start right like forward in the bind yep keep it simple keep it easy okay so oh that's great we do it that's great oh you got me alright here we go see you're both being hard so you're both just locking out amusement position be weak let his sort of flow past a joke and yeah I guess I guess that is fair game we're like this I mean I guess I could yeah do that total have you point at me okay yeah definitely actually actually kick me in the nuts are you that is a real thing that just happened oh sorry three points oh hi everyone because there I was just going to mock I mean you in the stomach right ah here we go see we're like really high up okay yeah ah fair okay okay yeah that's that's a good one but I lowered so you could have liked totally well when it oh but i overextended I was over here and you took out my support and then I was left the Kimbo and he just ran yep so one thing you're both is both very like just rooted here not moving at all oh he's light and with more being and flowing yeah got it oh wow yeah you got me yeah good good yep you got me all ready to gear up yeah I think our gear done okay I think you'll find a more aggressive battle on your hand okay these are warm this is you you look pretty you look like an awesome second character like dang stop DLC ah all right Anthony what are we doing here you're going to well you sure there's each other so one of the things I always tell my people is the worst thing you can do is going with a plan beyond learning figure I want to cut in this way yeah let the swords tell you what to do we did the fluent stuff we do the counter cutting you know how to do the basics of the combat so now when you go at it where it is like a mini tournament we're gonna have you guys back up two corners and Brian I are going to call point where we see a good legitimate strike come through or if you guys are just being all sloppy we'll say salte brat break getaway get ready for a lot of that right you said what the sword tell you what to do much what what's that sort murder Brian yeah and take his skin what is that what is that you say your rubber and he's what all right fight ah that was nothing Kalinda you had no force you had no structure all you can come up these aren't lightsabers you just tell what this we want to see actual good legitimate strikes especially to padded area like we don't want to hit it legs that's fine we've got plenty protection here good protection here look if you make a slice push and draw with it not just to lay it on sure yeah that's a date thing okay so I'd try it again a [Music] lot of photo good I'll give on the points of the hand all right all right so your hands look decent you are flat on the backside yep ah the edge alignment oh nothing nothing keeps going ah oh good I'll do it wow man how to proper gear it certainly frees you up you lose that fear oh that was ready start to feel dangerously like a workout yeah right he's like you drink though yeah nice dad all right all right for entertainments sake good heavens good feel completely different oh wow right all right go ahead this one's much lighter but we tried BJJ on me that's right you're gonna do yeah horse fighting exhausting yeah it is oh good one my house flag all flying just flat it was flat edge alignment so your points of a concussion though but no kill very nice I can't believe after 10,000 rounds we're tied good thing this last round is for 10 billion crystals and the heart of the princess [Applause] I said okey haha who will boss it out who rule fortress out soon as scary as it was to practice without the protective gear I'm so glad we did because everything felt so much more controlled on when we were totally rigged up I felt this release of like let the anger flow through you I felt trapped I felt like my range movement was constricted I was glad it was there but I couldn't see as much and I couldn't move its freely right so I think you came up the victor well it very quickly became a contest less because I think you have a better form I think you have the better instincts for it but I think that makes this the triathlons what not had just had a little bit more stamina you have a lot worse than I was sweating last night playing overwatch hahahaha not even lying ok so the takeaway fundamentals number one anyone can start practicing everything we just learned with a couple of brooms exactly probably want to wear idea or something the swings we talked about and we also talked about what was it called again where you lot about the foolin drill find words that bind work and bide work is something every wanting to do because you do have a long edge of the short edge you do have a strong edge in a weak edge or reverse that I this is one where as long as you're safe I think we could say grab broomsticks and try to sell home right if you actually need each other don't don't use broomstick I have nothing your arm oh yeah yeah don't actually swing at each other no nobody tried this at home also I'm going to need to keep this because I'm going to take up falconry Torreon come no that's actually an episode I'm working on really yes why not
