hi I'm Lisa welcome to my glass studio I've been playing around in the bins over here where I have all this glass and I came across this beautiful piece of fusers Reserve it's a cut off from a recent project that a student made and it's so beautiful look at the colors and this and the movement and the pattern it's so beautiful that I want to do something really special with it so so I couldn't decide what colors to put alongside this cuz this is so pretty it's uh it's pretty but it's also busy being busy what that means is sometimes you need something that's kind of a neutral or a solid beside it so this really shows off nicely and those other areas give the viewer's eye a place to rest but I can't decide what color to put with this I have this pretty kind of teal that I think looks really nice with it I have white glass laid out here I have a peacock open we tried this deep green with it the transparent green this oh my goodness a sherbety orange burnt orange color I haven't considered purple with it I still don't know what color I'm going to put along put with this I also have this pretty soft green which I think is nice as well so the cool thing about this type of glass is whatever color you put next to it that's the color that kind of Pops so if you're not necessarily a fan of Orange if you stay away from the orange it'll these other colors will tone it down on the other hand if you love orange and you really want to make it pop then you put this next to it and the orange just really becomes vibrant and comes out so keep that in mind when you're adding your compliment colors to something that's really busy like this try pulling out the colors in the glass and repeating one of those or like I'm doing here with this purple in this dark green is try using something totally different this also has where the colors blend there's also kind of a dark brown right here gray brown so we could probably even put gray with this we could put brown with it m of fact let's try some gray and see how that looks I've got two Shades of Gray over here let's try that I mean that's kind of fun that's kind of fun look how it pulls out those gray tones you know that could work um that color could work you know so a lot of options here you know sometimes you want to pull out one of these colors other times you want to contrast it to make it more exciting but this is already exciting in itself like wow right there's this fun technique I call it Feathering I don't know what the official name is or what other people call it but I'm going to cut this up and show you how to put it back together and make a really cool pattern so first thing I want to do though is clean the glass I don't always show this in my videos um but I do it okay all my glass is clean and dry before I start cutting it and I'm going to cut this into a bunch of little tiny pieces I I don't want to have to go back and clean every one of those little pieces it's much faster and easier to clean a big sheet like this all right so uh there we go and also there was some marker on there from the Sharpie left over so I make sure I got that off make sure it's clean front and back this is just a wet sponge with water nothing else and we just clean it make sure it's nice and good and dry and I like this section of the glass right here cuz I love that big pool of blue so this is where we're going to create our design and our pattern so bring this over here to my strip cutter and I've decided I'm going this is a right here this is an 8 in by 8 in piece of glass it's a whism glass a 96 fusible I de said I'm going to make my project this size because I think it's a nice manageable size to do a test piece you know kind of a fun active piece of art and also it's something very manageable for you at home it's very likely you can fit this size project in one of your Kilns you know maybe you don't have a big gigantic blue Kil like I do or some of these other big pieces of equipment and this is a nice manageable size project so I'm going to take this over here I have increments along the bottom here I'm going to take it to 8 in actually you know I'm going to cut it at nine uh just to be on the safe side make sure I have enough material to do what I want to do break that off there we are put that aside all right now I'm going to cut this into 1/4 inch wide strips and I'm going to keep the piece of glass intact while I do it we go I keep it all together now the trick to this technique is to keep the glass pattern in the same orientation the entire time you're working with it if you mix them up other people may not notice but you certainly will and it'll bug you it'll be like you know uh the fly on the on your paint or something or whatever going to irritate you like crazy so really try to keep these in the correct orientation the entire time you're building this now you could number the pieces that would actually be a nice idea but I'm not going to because I can do this and I know you can too all right bunch of quarter inch pieces here just keep going keeping that whole piece intact running have room here okay we're past eight we'll just going to do a couple more in case for some [Music] reason I'm not really sure what reason but we may need it all right so see we've got all these score lines on there all the way the full length of the glass quarter inch apart all right now I take them all right so now I take these pieces put them on this tray so I can move them around without uh you worrying about oh there we go perfect okay so here's the tricky part keep them in the right orientation don't mix them [Music] up all right how fun this is we'll put it back together there we go so now we really hope we had good contact with all of these score lines and nothing breaks if it breaks on us then we are it kind of makes the project not exactly the plan it makes it something new Nikki says there's nothing wrong it's not bad it's something new here we go okay all right now Let's Straighten those out we'll use this piece of glass to straighten them out all right now we're going to take these we alternate them every other one here we go and we're going to cut a/4 inch off the end this is a really hard thing to describe all right let's where that see how it's getting confused using here already this is why you need to having the right orientation on some sort of tray or something so you don't get confused like I'm about to get myself all right look how that creates this really cool pattern all right so what we're going to do I need a Sharpie let me go grab a Sharpie so I've got these laid out on this tray I've moved shifted them and remember we cut a little bit extra long a little longer than necessary so 8 in I think I like the pattern up here more than I like the pattern down here I like the way it's shifting with that orange and green kind of cool so I think I might use from here to here to create my 8 in block and uh not use those pieces so uh I've moved them side to side what we're going to do is we're going to cut off a qu inch off the ends of all this these pieces of every other one and then on this side we're going to cut off a/4 inch from the opposite piece or if that makes any sense um so that we get this cool shifting in the pattern and Just for kicks and Giggles let's go ah and number these would be helpful if I had a sharper Sharpie here but that's okay this way if one drops or I misplace it oops that's not 11 that's 12 so we're going to number these so if I misplace something I do it 18 twice silly me 20 21 22 23 24 make sure it looks like a four okay there we go so we've got 28 pieces and I've got marked which side I want to cut off from each one let's start with this top one here place it in here going to cut a quter inch off and put it back take this one let's save these little pieces maybe we could use these for something as a decorative accent or something who knows all right so this one we're going to cut a qu inch off this end all right so it's looking a little confusing right now but in a second you'll start to see the pattern and also having the number on there is great because I know where how to put these back all right now this one we're bring this over here all right this part's a little tedious I know it's a little you know kind of crazy but let me tell you this P this stuff comes out so cool it's really worth it and this pattern this type of glass this fusers Reserve it's beautiful but it's kind of busy so it's nice to find uh ways to use it that accentuate the glass accentuate the pattern the use of color and the movement in it so that's fun yes I think you know in the past I've not numbered these and right now I'm really happy that I did because it can get you know your eyes start going a little buggy looking at this pattern you're like oh boy how does that go back together I don't know I don't remember was it this way or was it this way well cuz there's a six on there I know it goes this way and look at this fun uh pattern that is starting to develop here see how it's shifting it's cooled it's uh they have the same coloring the same stations and everything but we're creating this really fun kind of shift a glitch yes yeah kind of like a glitch sure except a fun glitch we like this one all right so we're just going to keep doing this cutting these until we have the entire row cut so go ahead and all right so I went ahead and cut all these little pieces off and I measured it and I think I like the coloring on this end better than this end which is surprising me um but then that's cool so I've got all these numbers on there I went ahead and cut an 8 in by 8 in piece of clear I'm going to transfer these pieces over oh gosh see this is tricky right this is tricky good thing I have numbers on here is all I'm saying to myself right now is because I'm really appreciative of the fact that I don't have to you know guess where these pieces are going to go if I drop some or something there we we go fun right okay now slide that way oh and I kept all the little cut offs I'm not sure how we're going to use those yet but I think we're going to use those as a decorative element on this piece all right I'm going to take this piece of glass I use it to kind of lay these out I know this clear is kind of hard for you to see so I'm wondering so I'm going to have this fun pattern running the length of a piece of art and I want to do some filler colors around it I think Nikki and I have both decided we really like this with it even though it doesn't necessarily have that color in there um I think it goes nicely with it and we just like the color so we're just going to use it and then over here I pulled out this very neutral gray I think we might use that over there so what I've done is placed the pattern piece in such a way that it's not in the center you want to create some sort of tension by not putting it put it smack da in the center then it's kind of not as exciting so by moving it over it gives us a little bit of tension makes the piece more interesting so I want to know what this Dimension is here all right this is about three and A4 and this Dimension right here let's do an inch and a half over here of this color and then we'll see what's left so we're going to cut this at inch and a half it's kind of fun just designing as you go and picking colors kind of as you go in this direction let's see if we like that that's pretty wide but that's all right we're going to run with it and then slide this over here and cut it a eight when you're cutting straight stuff it's really nice to have a jig oh you know what I did not do was clean that I'll clean that in just a minute all right it's really nice to have a jig so you can get really nice accurate Cuts look how beautiful that is right okay and this is we're going to call that three and a half let's measure it over here as well over here's more like three and a qu so something's a little out of square so let's put this here and we'll cut this at three and A2 make sure that's the 8 in Direction it [Music] is I'm going to go 3 and 38 kind of divide it so I'm going to go ahead and split the difference cut this at three and 38 because I don't mind having a little bit of clear hanging off on the back but I really want it nice and square cut that put it here there we go look how beautiful yes loving the way that's coming out look at this and that nice pattern we have going on there let I turn it for you oh uhoh see oh good thing there's number on there okay so we have a junior director in the studio with us today he's supervising from his height chair over here so when you and I guess he's decided it's time for a station break all right so we placed this together I went with an inch and a half border here of this kind of neutral gray this is about a 3 and 38 piece of this pretty green and we took all those cut offs we had three extra pieces four extra pieces we decided to use those as decorative details we used all those little squares that we cut off as more decorative details I'm definitely going to clean off all this marker on these pieces with this wet sponge and then dry them nicely then we're going to put this in the kill and fire to a full fuse temperature and then we'll bring it back out and see what we have okay so we're out here in the studio opening the kilm and we have this beautiful fused glass in here didn't this come out awesome loving the colors and the combination there really fun all right so we're going to take this out put it on a mold slump it put back in here there we go check it's seated nicely on that mold I'm going to go ahead and actually take this out so that I can prime it get it ready for the next use take those out place this in the middle of the Kil close that up and then we'll go ahead and slump the glass welcome back to the studio let's open this Kil and see what we have it's always exciting to open a Kil after something's been fired all right check it out so we slumped this piece in an 8 in square C mold I'm really excited about the way this came out look at this fun color combination this is kind of a taupe over here which I don't usually work with so that was very fun over here we got this soft mint green which is pretty now this does this does have taupe in it and this does kind of have mint green but notice how these colors pull out those colors in this wild pattern and we did a Feathering technique here where we alternated the pieces and shifted them left and right to get this cool variation on the pattern so the fusers reserve is really busy and sometimes people just you know use it as a background they're done the whole project is done other times it's a nice accent piece in this case we used it to create an interesting pattern and design that makes this a more interesting and more desirable piece of art I love the effect right here in the future I think I like this area more I think it's more effective than this area on this particular project so in the future I would probably look for areas like this with a greater um variation in the design and the pattern not so linear like here here the pattern is not as obvious as it is here the shifting here is really obvious here and this is just beautiful and spectacular I love that and I also love this color right here that nice aqua teal color and then the accent pieces that we added I think that was a nice effect nice way to break up these large fields repeat the color repeat the pattern also notice how each of these pieces has a little halo around it that's consistent with using an opal glass when the glass melts down the sides the edges will flatten out and give you an extra detail now if you want to hide that you put these pieces on a glass similar to the color that they're made with if you want to accentuate you put them on a contrasting color so You' got this cool little halo around all these pieces which is a nice added Det detail almost like you outlin them with paint or something so that's very fun so overall let's check out the back back is a little planer but even that's kind of pretty you know it's a very neutral met that might be a nice design to do in the future something very monotone very soothing and calming where this side is pretty exciting pretty vibrant a lot of activity going on but I think that's very cool so overall I consider this piece an awesome success hope you enjoyed learning how to do this Feathering technique with the fusers reserve I'm sure you've got other techniques you can use with it so you know maybe put that in the comments other ways you've used fusers Reserve to make
