[Music] i'm not always at my desk writing code photography has been a hobby of mine for about 10 years [Applause] [Music] so i don't actually get to take my camera out a lot these days but that's okay because i've always got my iphone with me and i've been so impressed with the photos that i've been able to take using my iphone over the last few years it's really nice to be able to go out for a long walk or do some sightseeing and not have to worry about logging my heavy camera gear with me so today i'm going to show you how to use the built-in tools in the iphone to make your photos pop a little bit more and just stand out a bit from the crowd okay i've selected a bunch of photos here that we can look at editing and i'm going to start with this really simple photo it's the type of photo that you might take of your own pet or in your own home and i'm just going to click on the edit button up here and the first thing i'm going to do is i'm going to crop it a little bit so i'll click on the crop and straighten icon down the bottom i'm just going to zoom in a little bit and reposition that and then what i want to do is i want to actually lift the shadows here so you can see this is my dog mocha who is also in the frame here and he didn't want to be left alone so he's on my lap and so mocha is a bit he's standing with the light behind him which means the shadows on his face and his body are kind of making him a bit darker than he should be so i'm going to click on this little icon down here that looks like a sun and then you get access to all of the tools available in the in the ios photos app so what i want to do is i'm going to scroll across here to shadows and i'm going to slide this to the left and i'm going to start to lift the shadows so you can see immediately now that we've got a better looking photo so i can tap on this just to show you what it looked like before and after and so already this photo looks a lot better so i don't want to do too much of this it's a very simple photo it doesn't need a lot of work so i'm going to add lift all the shadows and i'm going to move over here to vignette and i'm going to add a vignette and what a vignette does is it is it adds shadows or darkens the edges of the photo and it allows you to focus more on your subject so if i add a vignette here you can see there's a bit of darkening coming in along the top and the bottom and it just adds a bit more focus to mocha which is you know the subject of my photo so again i'll just tap that before and after and you can see it's made a massive difference to the photo so i'm going to click done and save that now the next photo i'll look at here is probably uh this this one here so this was taken in the lakes district a few weeks back and again you can see the sky is kind of bright the shadows are pretty dark so i'm going to do the same thing i'm going to go into edit and i'm going to go into shadows and start by lifting the shadows so i'm going to lift the shadows there and then i might go back into the straighten tool and i just want to check that the horizon is straight it's very important when you're taking a photograph that you check that you're rising straight all too often i see people posting photos on instagram or social media where the horizon is crooked and i'm probably being super picky here but it kind of ruins the photo for me because it's not really how your horizon is supposed to look uh if it's like super crooked like this um so what i'll do is i'll just slide this this little tool down the bottom just so i can see if i'm happy with the horizon and i'm only going to minus one there it's it's already pretty straight and i tend to line it up myself when i'm taking the actual photograph so just do that and what i might do is have a look at some of the other um tools available here and so we've got highlights if i pull those highlights down a bit see what that does is it kind of darkens the sky the brighter parts of the photo so the sky itself is the brightest part of the photo and the and the sea or the the lake also you can see is pretty bright so if i slide the highlights down it starts to bring in some of the color that's there so i'll move across i might add a little bit of contrast and the one thing to remember though when you're taking a photo with your iphone is that it bakes in a lot of calculations already so unless you're shooting in raw the the camera itself is going to do the calculations it's going to add the contrast it's going to adjust the highlights and the colors for you and the white balance and stuff like that so you don't often need to do that too much to a photo that you've taken with your iphone but these little micro adjustments can actually make a lot of difference to to help it stand out a little bit um if i play with the the temperature slider here or the warmth slider you can see it makes a little bit of a difference so you've got cold and warm and i'm pretty happy with where it was actually might make it a little bit warmer and then you've got a definition um slider down here near towards towards the end and what that does is it affects the micro contrast of the photo so what that means it's like contrasting the little areas that kind of makes it look a little bit more defined i guess this definition is the name of the slider so i'm going to slide that up a little bit and you can probably see if we zoom in a bit you can see there's a little bit of micro contrast it it's a it's a minor adjustment in some photos it's a bit more obvious than others but that's what i'm going to do here so if we take a look at the before and the after you can see that's a big difference so here's an obvious one this is again a picture of mocha i took it in the garden when i was lying on the grass and as you can see it's super crooked right um so first thing we'll do is we'll go into edit and we'll click the straighten and crop tool and i'm just going to straighten that horizon there so i'm using the wall as a guide and when you slide this along you can see that there are actually lines that appear on the screen so use those lines as a guide to try and straighten your horizon so i'm going to do that and then up the top right here there's a an icon with a bunch of boxes and that allows you to change your ratio your aspect ratio of the image so i'm going to click on freeform here because i'm not going to print this it doesn't need to fit into a frame so what i'll do is i'm just going to drag the top down maybe drag the bottom up and i'm going to pull this out a little bit there's actually extra photo in this so i'm going to pull that out and it just frames it a little bit better for me in my mind what i haven't shown you are the filters that come with the iphone so i click on the filters here you can see there's vivid there's vivid warm vivid cool those three are the ones that i use the most actually if i'm using a filter so vivid or vivid cool are ones that i really like and there's other ones here dramatic dramatic warm dramatic cool and a few black and white ones so this is how you would apply a quick filter to your photo if you want to just boost it and i quite like vivid i quite like what vivid does here so if i can do the before and then the after it just kind of gives it a bit of a a boost so we'll click on done and we'll save that so next let's take a look at this picture of the sunset this was taken in sandymount strand in dublin so i'm going to click on edit and the first thing i can see here is obviously my horizon is a little bit crooked so i'm going to fix that real quick with the straighten tool and i'm going to slide this so that it looks straight and i think that looks about right and that's just a plus one adjustment but it's made a massive difference already um now i want to go into my tools and you can see there's also an auto button if i click on auto it does the sort of adjustments that it thinks might make the photo a little bit better for you so it brightens it up a little bit probably boosts the colors a little bit and if you can if you scroll along here you can actually see what it's done because it's made adjustments in the tools so it's actually taking the exposure down one stop and then it's use this brilliance slider and what the brilliant slider is is like a combination of highlights and exposure and shadows and contrast so it's kind of like an ai tool if you don't want to manually adjust your highlights and your shadows you can try this brilliance slider and it actually does a really nice job often so if i slide this you can see what it's doing it's kind of it's kind of adjusting the dark part of the photo because the bright part which is the sky doesn't really need a lot of adjustment we'll have a look it's adjusted some highlights it's adjusted some shadows and so we can lift those shadows a bit more and also play with the contrast the brightness black point saturation and vibrancy so what i want to do this photo the auto has done a really nice job of it i'm going to just bring the highlights down a little bit more that sky is still looking a bit bright for me so i'll pull the highlights down you can see one of the one of the effects of pulling the highlight slider down is that the brighter parts get darker which means it pulls in some color as well that's in the highlights so you can see that the orange and the blue in the sky has been pulled in a bit more i'm going to go to definition here and i'm just going to add a bit of definition because that helps bring out the flowers a little bit and then what i want to do is add a vignette so again that just focuses the attention on the center of the of the photograph so here we have your before and you're after massive difference and finally we'll do this photo this was taken in london on friday of last week so you can see again this is crooked so if i click on edit i want to just quickly straighten that so i'm going to use this building in the far distance as a as a guide but when you're taking wide photos the default camera on the iphone is a wide angle lens you get some distortion closer to the actual camera so you can see in the left and the right side the buildings are angled away even though the one in the middle and the distance is straight so this straighten tool you also have a vertical and horizontal adjustments that you can make so if i was to slide this along the vertical adjustment you can see what's actually doing it's kind of like tilting the photo almost so if i tilt this down a little bit more you're starting to see the buildings on the edges are kind of getting straight aligned with the actual edge of the frame so i'm going to leave that down at about -7 that looks a lot better and we'll go in and we'll do some adjustments and i might just see where the brilliant slider does that's lifting the shadows and dropping the highlights so we're getting a lot more color in there this definitely i think could do with some definition particularly when you look at a road i think definition works a lot for tarmac so i'm just going to slide that along i'll give it a good bit of definition you don't want to go overboard with this because too much can kind of distort the photo a little bit i kind of like where that is and let's have a look at contrast and see if we can add a little bit more contrast and there we go i think that's nice and you can have a look at vibrancy that kind of does the blues and the reds and the oranges a bit saturation just saturates every part of the photo but vibrancy is kind of a more subtle effect um and that kind of looks good and then you can play with the warmth if you want a warmer feel um or cooler feel kind of like the cooler feel there that gives a bit more blue to the sky and then the tint is your purple and your green slider so if i slide it to the left i'm getting more green in the photo and if i slide it to the right i'm getting a bit more purple so i'm going to add a little bit of purple there i think that looks nice and again if i just quickly tap before and then after it's that's again a big difference uh so i think it just kind of makes the photo look a lot nicer um so there you have it um click on done there so we haven't done every photo on this album but i think i've given you a good idea of what you can do with the built-in tools in your iphone to make your photos stand out a bit more and maybe up your iphone photography game a bit uh let me know if you found this video useful uh hit the like and subscribe to my channel i mostly do programming content but every now and then i'm going to sprinkle in some photography stuff and next time we'll probably take a look at lightroom mobile and some more advanced edits that you can do on the iphone thanks for watching and i'll see you in the next video
