hey guys welcome to another episode of ross draw and today i'm teaching you guys how to draw and stylize eyes i have my eye on you this has been one of the most requested videos because i've never done a full video on eyes before and so i'll be teaching you guys how to visually communicate an eye and some tips on how i stylize it to make it more aesthetic so there's gonna be three parts this video first i'm gonna teach you guys how to draw more realistic eyes you know i personally love semi-realism and then we're going to take all of our concepts and apply it to something more stylized and then we're going to be working on this piece together walk through my painting process in real time so without further ado oh ashley before we begin nema's official march launch just dropped on friday i have one big merch event every single year and this year we have hoodies necklaces nemo versus pin sets calendar so head to rossdraw.com to grab some of the new merch without further ado let's get started rock dolls how to draw and stylize eyes [Music] part one is a realistic eye so i've gathered some reference here to help me yeah before we actually start i want to tell you guys that you don't need to know everything about the eye you know to to draw an eye i don't know everything about the eye i don't know the corneas or the retina where that is the eyeball eye hair i don't know but over time i learned how to visually communicate the eye and that's the most important thing that we learn how to visually represent it to our audience let's get started so first thing we're gonna do is to sketch and just kind of roughly sketch out an almond shape draw the iris maybe the eye lid line a little bit up here like that draw the pupil pretty basic right very simple very basic so far and then i love adding the eyebrow immediately i think arcs are in right now and i personally love the kind of a gesture that pinch and pull shape of the eyebrow arc and you might wonder where is this arc supposed to be it's supposed to be at the beginning it's supposed to be at the middle it's supposed to be at the end so if you go back to the references that i have here it seems like the lift is about 45 degrees yeah so we're gonna check our eye drawing oh it seems like it's kind of off it's almost there it almost looks correct so we're gonna adjust it a little bit oh much better look at that but i'm just gonna give it a more refined drawing so we have an easier time laying down everything else and a lot of us artists are intimidated by the white canvas because we are afraid that every single line is going to matter and we're going to make a mistake and we kind of compromise our confidence and so one thing i love to do right now is just the ad the base of the skin and now i feel like we're less intimidated and next thing we're gonna do is add the shadows of the eye yes and so there's three main parts on where i add shadows we're gonna add shadows right here boop right under our eyes and then right above our eye over here so this is something i've painted uh i think it's my second youtube video i've ever done but you can see here how this inner eye shadow is a triangle so having that knowledge helps you kind of block it in you know with straight lines and the next place i want to add shadows is under the eye and be careful because if you add too much shadow they ended up looking really tired and so we want to just kind of softly add some uh some roundness to our eye and then at this corner i could do this with my eyes closed let's add our eyeball color don't add white usually our eyeballs have a little color in them you know a little pigment a little shadow so we're gonna use an off-white chris what eye color would you like green all right green ooh that's a nice color look at that nice green eye very nice next step is adding our highlights and there are four key areas on where i add highlights the one i start with first is always at the corner of the eye oh i love popping that out you can see on christine's piece you know at the corner of the eye and also my piece of violet that nice little highlight over there the next area where i would add a highlight is our water line which is right here and help give it your eye form as well pop that out nice looking pretty good yeah our third place where we add a highlight is right under the eyebrow arc [Music] and our last place where i love adding highlights and of course i think everyone's favorite on our eyeball and i'm gonna add it right here ooh and some people have multiple highlight sources so maybe i'll like add a bunch of these chris how's our green eye looking so far yeah and the next step i love adding are fine lines like look at all this nice kind of eyebrow hair eyelash hair all these uh beautiful detail on top i'm gonna switch my brush into something maybe a little kind of like a crayon maybe a color pencil i'm gonna add some fine lines and some hairs i like attacking this if this were real makeup we are all makeup artists and i'm adding the eyeliner right now don't like drawing all the lashes but i'll teach you guys a tip on how to draw lashes pretend the perspective you can see here it blooms out and so you never want to just have one direction the whole time using a different brush we all love brush work [Music] so this is before and after before and after and this is all to prep for color dodge yes color dodge i'm so excited i color dodged all my eyes are you kidding me oh look at that and then definitely the corner of the eyes give it a nice shimmer that nice pop and there you have it our eye obviously it is stylized through my own kind of taste you know i think as we keep on doing art our interests shape how we kind of paint an eye for an eye after you learn more kind of realistic proportions we can tweak what we know so we can stylize it more so we're starting with our shape and it's less of an almond shape and more of like a circle shape like that everything that are in the eye still applies so we have our eyelid line pupil add shadows but let's use an airbrush because it's softer and then our off-white eyeball color and then since this is like you know a more stylized anime eye let's go with a pink eye color how pretty look at that and then let's add our highlights some people like to make the pupil bigger so maybe we can try that and then we add the fine lines and a lot of anime kind of use a like almost a block for this so we're gonna do something similar very very dark it's almost like it represents inking and so we're inking our eye now i'm going to blend it all a little bit [Music] and then of course color dodge at that [Music] nice looking great nice look at that our first eye and then our second eye something with more kind of a standard realistic proportion and then we have some more stylized we learned from this and we applied it to this and tweaked the proportion tweak the shapes we take it even further maybe this person is a uh like a cat character the eye of sauron in there but make an anime [Music] and now on to part three i want to walk you through in real time how i paint eyes and incorporate things that we've learned into an actual piece so that we're just not drawing random eyes and space but applying it to your own paintings is the goal and so we're at this stage it's the perfect time to incorporate eyes we're going to add some off-white to our eyeball let's chew their eye color and i personally love yellow it's like very kind of fantasy you know it's kind of different oh she looks bright very nice [Music] and then the highlights we've all been waiting for on the actual iris [Music] look at that beautiful nice and then i love experimenting so while we give her like a teal eye shadow i love adding makeup to to my portraits i think they look awesome before and after yeah i think it looks really great so from that knowledge you know you can go as far as you want you can style it however you like and i'm going to bring one example that i thought does this well and that's with the powerpuff girls yes i love powerpuff girls growing up you know i think my favorite was bubbles but i want to show you guys something about this eye and why it works they lose all the shape data but they keep the iris they keep the pupil they keep the highlight imagine if you took out the highlight of their eyes let's go further let's take out everything can you imagine my eyes were like that but yeah because they lose the shape data they have to add everything back in so i think that's why it works here here's another example of i feel like good understanding of eyes they were able to understand the basic and then tweak the proportion tweak the shape into something more cute the people is not just black but kind of stylized and this one is a great example what keeps this together is the almond shaped eyes they keep the shape data and they can lose everything else hope you guys learned a lot from this video i've always wanted to create a video on eyes teaching guys how to do eyes and how i stylize them and make them more aesthetic and then i'll check in
