welcome back to susie anderson home this week we are looking at how to decorate in the georgian style this style is warm timeless livable and elegant dating back to the 1700s is often referred to as georgian styles as it encompasses palladianism rococo neoclassicism and regency influences in this video we'll describe the main characteristics of georgian style as it exists today in historical english country mansions terraced town houses southern u.s plantation houses and new england homes in the early to mid georgian styles the color palette was rich and bold featuring warm timbers navy blue gray burgundy mustard pea green and metallic accents [Music] by the regency period darker colours were replaced by a quieter pastel palette of off-whites stone muted yellows and reds pale cream sage rose powder and wedgewood blue light greens and regency blue [Music] do [Music] the dominant architectural influence seen in georgian homes is palladian style the classic symmetry and grand proportions were designed to achieve a satisfying neat and refined aesthetic with original doors and mouldings inspired by the detailed and methodical order of roman columns [Music] historic homes feature graciously proportioned structures with hipped roofs and grand chimneys these homes are typically constructed from brick wood and stone or stucco in the later periods and were often two rooms deep and two and a half stories high entryways feature arches fan light windows pediments arch tops and grand columns in the style of corinthian ionic and doric [Music] a celebrated feature of this style are the symmetrical multi-pane and large sash windows these are seen on both stories with the addition of a window on the second floor over the front door [Music] the opulent fireplaces are at the heart of georgian homes and are crafted from white marble or carved pine surrounds with beautiful ornamentation other interior features include roman inspired niches high ceilings classical columns masonry figures ribbons garlands crown moldings ceiling roses and wall paneling [Music] in georgian homes of today you'll find oak floorboards marble tiles and stone flag flooring in the kitchen in the early periods oak flooring was at a premium so squared fur or pine boards were also popular choices for rural homes [Music] in early georgian styles carpets and rugs were seen as a luxury however by the mid-18th century fitted wall-to-wall carpets in lighter colours were seen along with lightweight rugs and intricate persian turkish knotted and middle eastern designs these are still widely used in the homes of today [Music] georgian light fixtures are strong and symmetrical in design chandeliers and ceiling pendants are typically made from a combination of glass wood brass or silver featuring decorative details of wreaths scrolls urns and leaves [Music] [Music] wall sconces rococo style candelabras and chandeliers feature open electric candles or enclosed hurricane or fabric shades [Music] to reflect light and glamour mirrors can be placed behind wall sconces [Music] large statement freestanding chandelier style or small and slender gilded lamps are positioned on hall tables bedsides consoles and sideboards for gentle illumination and task lighting windows feature both external and internal shutters often painted in black forest green or navy blue and were designed to retain heat in the cooler months in later periods curtains with pagoda-style pelmets gained popularity with festoon being the prominent style [Music] these were soon replaced by the french rod window curtains reflecting the horizontally drawn curtains seen in interiors today fabric choices include lightweight linens cottons and silks in printed floral and geometric patterns of light achieve a more traditional look include rococo chippendale or sheraton style furniture timber painted black velvet and damascus posted pieces in straight lines can be complemented by gentle curvature and decorative motives of chippendale pieces [Music] these furnishings are typically crafted from mahogany maple satin wood cherry and virginia walnut [Music] in the living room wing back and upholstered arm chairs day beds and sofas with shield backs are popular choices other pieces include tilt top tables slant top desks and secretaries consoles knee hole tables and claw foot baths
