in this video i'm going to show you how to cut the countertop on a formica countertop in this particular video i'm installing a double sink sink with a double door cabinet underneath i'm going to show you which tools i'm using and i'm going to show you step by step and make it real easy for you now if you just happen to be using a single sink with a single door cabinet underneath you can use the same method that i did here to center the sink on the countertop with the level but just measure the door itself to get the center line of the door and then use the level to get your mark on the countertop this is rudy from the home improvement channel with another video showing you how to fix things around the house if you're a subscribed member to my community then welcome back if you're new to my channel please consider clicking that subscribe button below and please like this video if it was helpful for you so without further ado let's dive right in all right so as you can see here we're using an old sink we had to scrape all the old caulk off of there and we don't have the original pattern that the sink would have come with but it's very easy to get that all you have to do is measure inside these lips that stick down right there and then go the other way and one down there all right so just take a measurement there as you can see we're just under 21 inches right there going that way and then the length is going to be just under 32 inches so if i make my whole 21 by 32 that's going to work just fine next thing you're going to want to do is take a level and put it between the doors so that you can get a nice center line and make the level uh nice and plumb and then once you get the level plumbed out you can uh mark the countertop right where the center line is going to be all right just like so so after that you'll probably want a 24 inch square you can put that square against the back edge of the backsplash right there and put it on your line you just made and now you can draw take a pencil and draw a nice line down that thing and get a nice center line [Music] it always looks better when the sink is in the middle so to get your edges established just put the 16 inch mark on the center line and then you can mark out your zero and then extend the tape measure and mark out your 32 now i would do this in two different places so that you have two points of reference now of course your sink may be a different size this is just the sizes that we're using here all right once you get your lines there just take your square and kind of do the same thing you did with the center line and draw yourself a nice line there and then do the same thing on the other side after that you can take some of that blue tape and that'll make you a nice uh line that you can follow when you go to cut that out and then for the front and the back we pretty much have this balanced pretty evenly between the front and the back this countertop was already installed here when we got to the job this probably would have been better to do with this off of the cabinets but it is what it is so the the cut line in the front is just kind of encroaching on the cabinet itself so i'm gonna have to use a oscillating tool to cut that instead of a jigsaw the jigsaw is just not gonna work the back line should be fine we have about an inch and three eighths and i believe the jigsaw should just fit right there so uh that shouldn't be any trouble at all we'll just have to use an oscillating tool to come across the front and it's it's not a big deal same thing with the measurements you're going to want to make that 21. you could move that closer to the back if you wanted to once you're satisfied that you've got the tape exactly where you want it just go ahead and make some pilot holes so that you can start the saw in various places and make sure that that blade doesn't go past your line when you're drilling that out [Music] and the battery's dead yeah all right we got a new battery and solve that problem just go ahead and finish off your hole there i just do want to make a quick note here make sure that you use the right blade this is a laminate blade if you notice the teeth on the blade i don't know if you can see them through the package here but the the teeth are kind of coming horizontal and that works very well for this type of surface so just let the saw do the work and take your time and don't don't push it too hard so [Applause] before you get too far in this project you're going to want to support that center piece now because if you cut it out three quarters or whatever and then the weight of the countertop snaps it off and it's going to leave a big ugly chip right there that you're probably going to see so put a brace there and screw it down right to the top of the countertop it's going to hold that up while you're cutting it out and it would also be a good idea to make sure that you have already cut where that brace is going to be so that you don't have to take it out later and move it also i put some tape along the back edge there to keep the saw from scratching up the backsplash and as you can see here i drilled some extra pilot holes for different you know points that i can start the saw from i've gone as far as i can go here with the jigsaw and now i have to finish off the rest of this with the oscillating tool and like i said you can see it's already cut there underneath where the brace is and just finishing up the last little bit right here [Music] just pop that puppy on out of there and take it away to the trash all right yeah gonna test fit that sink and hopefully she's gonna fit right in there and there we go like the glove and here's the finished product the sink is down all the way just gotta take it up i gotta take it back up and take the tape off and normally you will have these clamps that go underneath the sink um the person that installed this years ago never installed those clamps they just had it caulk down and i don't have those clamps so i'm going to do the same thing but normally you would have those clamps okay there you go that's how i would cut a hole out for the sink thanks for watching
