hello and welcome to NGO pools how to guide section in this video we will cover the steps to correcting low water pressure in your pool if the PSI in your pool system has significantly dropped your water isn't flowing as fast or your pool cleaner has stopped or is running slow you most likely have a low water pressure problem in your pool the piping in a pool has two sides the suction side that is before the pump and a pressure side that is after the pump the pump creates a vacuum that sucks water from the pool and then pushes it back into the pool through a filter if you have a blockage in the suction side of the pump the blockage will restrict the amount of water flow and will result in low pressure a blockage in the pressure side like a dirty filter will produce a high pressure reading in the system but will result in low water pressure returning to the pool this guide addresses some of the common causes of a low water pressure number one clogged skimmer basket if your skimmer basket is full of debris you are effectively shutting off the pipe between the skimmer and the pump if the pump has less water entering in it is moving less water out therefore reducing the water pressure this problem can be fixed simply by removing any debris found in the skimmer basket number two clogged strainer basket like a clogged skimmer basket a clogged pump strainer will also reduce water flow through your pump causing pressure to decrease once again this can be fixed by removing any debris found inside the strainer basket number three clogged filter a clogged or dirty filter will decrease the water flow through your system and produce low water pressure returning to your pool wash your cartridge filter and periodically soak the filter overnight in a TSP solution to get the grease and gunk out of the folds for sand filters you will need to backwash as required change the sand every five to seven years in between changes if sand is caked on top take one to two inches off at the top and replace it with new sand number four too many water features your pool pump is designed to pump a specific number of gallons per minute if you have a large amount of water features in your pool the pump may not be able to supply adequate water flow to each of the water features this will result in an overall low water pressure in your pool to fix this problem try turning off water features or alternating which ones are turned on you may have to upgrade your pool pump to support the amount of water features that you have number five clogged impeller if the impeller becomes clogged with debris water can't rotate out the sides of the impeller this decreases suction which reduces water flow through the pump see our guide on how to clean out a pool pump empower for detailed impeller cleaning instructions number six suction leak a leak in the suction side of the pump can cause a number of problems if large enough too much air will be sucked into the system and the pump will lose prime if small air will be sucked in through the pump and start to collect at the top of the filter tank after time passes usually a few hours air pressure at the top of the tank will create enough back pressure to reduce the flow of water significantly when the pump is shut off this back pressure will cause the water in the suction pipe to surge back and sometimes push water up through the skimmer the solution to this problem would be to locate and fix the suction leak see our guide how to identify and correct air leaks for detailed instructions number seven clogged pipe a clogged pipe from the skimmer suction line or main drain reduces the amount of water to the pump and creates low water pressure in the return lines push a stiff wire down the skimmer or suction ports to see if you have a clog near the entrance if there are no cogs near the entrance you may have to get a pool professional to check your pool pipes number eight pump is too small if your pump size was calculated for your initial pool system and you have recently added more equipment you may have exceeded the pumps capability to supply a gallons per minute that is now required also if you have moved your pump significantly further away from the pool which required more pipe you may have increased water resistance in the pipes that exceeds the pumps specifications to fix this problem you'll have to upgrade the motor in your pump see our guide how to replace the motor on your pool pump for detailed instructions number nine bad pressure gauge pressure gauges on top of the filter can go bad over time your apparent low pressure reading may be due to a faulty gauge replace the faulty gauge with a new one to get an accurate reading see our guide how to replace a pool filter pressure gauge on a cartridge filter for more information this concludes our guide on how to correct low water pressure if you have any additional questions please feel free to call us toll
