[Music] thank you [Music] thank you hey what's up you guys Marty Schwartz here with Marty music and there was a short that I made a while back Marty Schwartz making a short at Marty Schwartz of Marty Schwartz and I made this short about connecting just taking two pentatonic runs and you can play up and down the entire neck and a lot of people started asking more questions I've taught it a lot but we're going to review it again right now so this is basically connecting Pentatonix two devices to play up and down the entire neck starting now here we go all right slower review of the E and a root extended Pentatonix because when you know these and think of these as just two devices you can play up and down the entire neck and I made a really I've taught this stuff it's also in my lead guitar courses at martymusic.com I've taught this concept for years but this is a nice slow review again for you guys I've made thousands of videos so they get you know they kind of go out there and this is just a nice review of a way to play up and down the entire neck thinking of it as two devices I'm going to do the key of E first because there's a little extra few notes a little cheat for it different Keys depending on the open strings you can do some really cool tricks uh so we're going to do E minor pentatonic right we'll just start right up here on the 12th fret first thing E minor pentatonic root on the E string 12th frets foreign [Music] knowing where the roots are are great in that position it's the high E string the D string and the low E string now you have that e root extended scale I still find the root the same way I find the root but for the extended scale I put my ring finger there and we're only this is really important listen we're only going to use our index finger and ring finger for the whole thing so 10 12. 10 12. slide up to 14 and now you're in that home row shape if you want to stay there and not slide down you can do that [Music] then you have 10 I'm sorry 12 14 12 14. and you could keep going and staying in this position but the extended scale slides up to the 16th fret with your ring finger right there and then you have to do a little finger change like only a half step apart but use your index finger not your middle finger which you naturally would want to use but we're setting our fingers up to keep going up easily so you're sliding with your ring fingers now on the 16th fret of the G string but then you switch to index finger on the 15th fret of the B string and now you have that little box um 15 17 15 17 slide up to 19. and so back down [Music] you switch to your ring once again I said you're only using your index and ring finger [Music] that got me from 10th fret foreign all the way up to the 19th fret so that's a lot of frets and that extended skill is great you don't run out of room as quickly you also get a little more of this horizontal thinking you know up and down not left and right but a little bit of both foreign and then the sliding part has a lot of great sound to it and a lot of a lot of vibe [Music] all that so that's the minor pentatonic with the root on the E string extended scale [Music] so that I found it by finding the root on the E string so now there's the same thing but when you find the root on the a string so first the basic E minor pentatonic scale with the root on the a string shape without extensions I find the root it's on the a string seventh fret and I play this [Music] if you hear it's the exact same thing as this [Music] it's just in a different spot and that b string you know it's tuned differently so it makes things look different um but then the extended scale for that is really great it's one of my favorite things on guitar it would look like this you still know where that root is [Music] gotta like feel that root but then you have this position on the E string you have five seven on the a string you have five seven and on the D string you have five seven and then you slide that up to nine and then you have seven nine on the G and because of that b string you gotta go index finger to eighth fret and then ten and then slide that up to twelve and then you have 10 12 on the high e [Music] and what's beautiful is you've now ended up on the 12th fret which takes us right back to the first one that I showed you and this time we started on the fifth fret and ended up at the 12th fret and that other position we started the 10th fret and get up to the 19th fret so that means that we have 5 up to 19 covered for the minor pentatonic scale just knowing two things so let's go on the way back down and remember I said only your ring an index finger so 10 12 12 10 12 10. now you can slide with your ring or your index here [Applause] and you're going to want to practice both ways [Music] now what's great about the key of E in particular is that we can add literally just one more fret and then the open string and now we are starting with the open E all the way up to 19. that's just oh three five [Music] now knowing these knowing these doesn't all of a sudden make you an amazing lead guitar player but these are the fundamentals that you want to know inside and out so that you can just you just you can live inside of this and when you hear like a Clapton lick or a Hendrix lick you can hear where in this it's starting to follow and then also practicing it over Jam tracks and I'll you know I love using a Looper pedal so I'm just going to do a slow e blues and I'm just going to play through those possession those possessions those positions check it out foreign [Music] foreign [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] all right I hope you guys enjoyed the lesson uh feel free to check out those links down there appreciate you subscribing and I hope to see you again take care [Applause] foreign [Music]
