a drill and impact driver are the most useful tools you'll own and will help you out on a variety of jobs from simple maintenance to large building projects they may look similar but both are used differently an impact driver is solely used for driving in screws and coach screws and a drill is used primarily for drilling holes although most drills can also be used to drive in screws there's a wide range of drills and impact drivers to choose from as always it's a good idea to think about the kind of jobs you'll be doing when you choose any tool so let's have a look at the main features of a drill we've got a variable speed trigger this gives us a lot more control forward reverse all drills have these now a chuck this holds your bit in place high speed settings and low speed setting generally we have two for high speed settings this is when we're drilling into a piece of timber or concrete and for low speed is generally when we are driving in a screw we've got a lot more control and it doesn't use as much battery power for putting in a lot of screws now on the front we have the hammer setting this is for when you're drilling into concrete and the drill setting is for drilling into all other materials we also have our torque settings in this particular drill it ranges from 22 right around down to one torque is basically rotational force if we're putting in a smaller screw we'll have it on a low torque setting if we're putting in a bigger screw i have it on a higher torque setting led light this is pretty good when you're working in dark places or under a bench where there's no light now battery this is pretty nice and easy to clip in and out good little function here tells us exactly the level that we are on battery technology has come a long way and there's some basic info to look for voltage simply cordless tools with the higher voltage are more powerful lower voltage is fine for light work then look at amperage hours or ah the higher the ah the longer the battery will last between charges good if you're using it for long periods of time some batteries are also multi-volt the great thing about multi-volt technology like on our battery here ranges from 18 to 36 volt i can take this battery and i can put it into my 18 volt drill and then i could also take it out and put it straight into my bench saw all my drop saw the battery automatically reads what the tool is and it'll switch from 18 or 36 volt basically it's two batteries in one finally our charger now if you're going to be using your battery all day you may want to look for a model that has a fast charger and these days you can charge your battery whenever you want and you don't have to wait for it to go flat it also has a fan set into it which helps cool the battery down as it's charging moving on to impact drivers the impact driver's sole purpose is for driving in screws it has a quick release chuck it also has a variable speed trigger forward and reverse switch and led light the very high torque and on some models this can be adjusted with a button at the end of the day if you've got to be driving in a lot of screws an impact driver is a must now when it comes to safety always use eye protection and wear ear protection when using an impact driver make sure not to have any loose clothing and tie your hair back if using a quarter drill always use an rcd when working outside and make sure to unplug your charger when not in use you can use a drill for a variety of jobs and there's a bit or an attachment for each job from drilling small holes up to really large holes to mixing paint and even polishing metal let's start with something simple like attaching these two pieces together now to make sure i get the right drill bit i've chosen a drill bit that is the size of the interior shaft we don't want to drill a hole that is too big now the type of screw i'm using is square drive so for my impact driver i'll select the square drive bit that's going to fit in there nice and neat like that great thing about square drives you get so much more grunt because it's got good purchase when that fits into the back of the screw i'm going to tighten that up on the chuck i've set that to drill mode i've also set that on high speed because generally for drilling a hole we want it on high speed and i'm going to pre-drill my hole through both pieces of timber which is best practice and will ensure the wood doesn't split when i drive my screw in this is why it's really handy having a drill and an impact driver don't just pull the trigger and go for gold you want to just pull it nice and slowly make sure you're 90 degrees to your piece of timber you're not on an angle you've got a good amount of force on the back of your drill and just pulse it in until it starts to go nice and easy and that there is quite a nice little finish now if you want to draw any holes that are slightly bigger these spade bits are fantastic for that used on high speed and only into timber they've got a good amount of length so you can get right in nice and deep you can use them for dribbling through framing to allow for pipes and wires to go through or for a large bolt or pre-drilling for coach screws even so they're nice and sharp we use them on a fast speed so let's take another 25 mil here put that in our drill make sure we tighten that chuck up nice and tight once again we're going to have it on our drill function we've got a nice sharp point on the end which means it's going to sit in my timber and start drilling until it gets to the spade point if it's hitting only on one side of the timber that means i'm slightly off 90 degrees and it gives me a chance to adjust it and there's our clean 25 mil hole now if you're working on a job that requires a relatively large screw like this 150 millimeter long landscape screw you're going to need a suitable impact driver to put it in until you get familiar with whatever drill that you're using you might want to start off on a lower torque setting so all i'm going to do is make sure i start off nice and 90 degree i'm not on an angle like that keep a good amount of pressure so the drill bit doesn't come out of the end of the screw absolutely beautiful just flew in there no problem whatsoever now if you want to use your battery drill for driving in screws you can do this also so what i'm going to set this up with i'm going to take it off the drilling mode and i'm going to put it around onto our torque settings always start off with a lower torque setting and you can always work your way up i'm not going to pre-drill a hole in this piece of timber because it doesn't matter right in the middle so what i'm also going to do because i'm putting in a screw i'm going to put my speed down to low and i'm going to control the whole thing with the trigger as well set that up making sure that we're 90 degrees now see that that is the ratcheting function that's kicking in the clutch has kicked in if you have a look at that that is just sitting about a mil or two above the surface so what i could do is set that one or two more so that goes down just a little bit further still not quite enough torque so a few more turns so that's looking pretty good so that's a really good way of just checking to see which torque you need for how long the screw is and what sort of timber that you're going into and make sure a lot of your work is controlled with your trigger now when it comes to drilling its tiles you want to make sure you get the right bit for the job now what i have here is a ceramic drill bit because i'm drilling into a ceramic tile now a little tip i'll put some masking tape down and i'll put a cross on there exactly where i want to drill my hole the reason i do this is because when i put my drill bit on there it's not going to slip on the glaze surface of the tile so what i'm going to do is put on a mask then i'll line the tip of the drill bit up with my mark okay that's cutting pretty good so i'm just going to step that up to a faster speed and i'm going to control it with the trigger and that's all our drilling done the next thing you need to do is head into store and get yourself to drill an impact driver that suits you just ask one of our team members and they'll point you in the right direction don't forget to subscribe to the mitre 10 youtube channel for
