DIY: how to make a steering wheel table

what do you normally do when you are in your car and you need to eat or work but you've got nowhere to put your food or your laptop well in today's video i'm going to show you how to make a steering wheel tray in order to solve these problems [Music] let's go through the material that we're going to use for today's video what i've got here is a piece of wood it's about 400 millimeters long about 220 millimeters wide uh i've got a jigsaw i've got a ruler as well as a 90 degree angle i've got my safety goggles a marking pencil i've got a 56 millimeter hole saw attached to my drill on a temporary drill press here and this should be mostly what we're going to need in order to make this stand so let's begin with the measurements all right with the piece of wood laying like this i measured halfway through the wood which would be 200 millimeters and i then measured an outer two lines of 300 millimeters apart this would be the outer distance of the bottom part of the steering wheel where this should be fitting um due to the fact that it's a 56 millimeter hole saw on the in the drill i made half of that which is a 28 millimeter gap where the center line for the one hole should be as well as the center line for the other hole 28 millimeters from the end line so let's get drawn to drilling these two holes [Music] it's a handy tip to remember is if you drill the hole halfway through and then start drilling on from the other side as well through the same hole that the drill bit in the middle made it would be easier to remove the removal part from the hole saw as well as it would give you a cleaner edge around both sides once the hole is drilled through so let's do it from the other side [Music] is how's it going amazing so both holes are drilled and the wood is still looking very good on both sides with no chips or cracks that were caused by the hole saw now for the rest of the measurements on the back side this the side which would be pointing away from you and towards the window of the vehicle we're going to draw a straight line between the two holes and we're going to use a 90 degree angle on the side of the wood as well in order to make sure this line is nice and straight and level between the two holes and then from the top side we are going to make a mark at 60 millimeters from the top side on both sides and once again with the 90 degree angle draw a nice straight line between the two holes on those two marks another feature that we want to do with these is from the center line of the hole i drew i made a mark 70 millimeters from the center line which i am now also going to mark on this bottom line drawn the same was done from the other circle's center line so let's make a mark over here as well the main purpose for this is to draw a line from the bottom of the circle where the center line went through to the new mark that we've made which would look like that we would then also repeat this on the other side amazing now using the jigsaw i'm simply going to cut out among these lines so let me set up and do it foreign [Applause] you all right so the hole is made inside the wood it's looking very good on both sides now i've had a change of mine in the meanwhile for some slight detail so another tool that i've decided to implement here is a router as well as a quarter inch round over bit so that i could round over the inside of these holes as well as the outside of the cutting board on both sides this would ensure that there's less damage made or done to the steering wheel as well as less sharp points towards yourself and i think it would just make it a bit more user friendly so let me set up the router and get around to routing this piece of wood [Music] hello [Music] [Music] hey [Music] hello [Music] [Applause] hello [Music] uh hey [Music] [Applause] [Music] great [Music] so wonderful so i've routed it all around all the edges are nice and smooth it's looking very beautiful at this stage i've also taken a piece of sanding paper and just just sanded off some of the rough edges that it might have had so now let's hope this is the exact right size and i took all my measurements correctly so let's go and take this put it inside the car and fit it onto the steering wheel okay so now for the moment of truth the steering wheel tray and the steering wheel so first up we'll test it from the bottom like such and it fits very very nicely so now you can put whatever on you i wish i broke my laptop along this this is what it could have been a perfect idea it's a very small one this is merely a piece of wood that i had laying around and i didn't quite compensate for the steering wheel cover as well but it still fits quite nicely uh the other option for this specific thing tray is also to put it over the top of the steering wheel which you would then also be able to have a nice tray up here to put whatever on should it be something you need to look at maybe your phone standing up straight against the steering wheel or maybe your tablet or anything of the kind but i reckon this is quite handy i might make another one in the future maybe a slight bit longer to give to give a bit more space but if you put this on the bottom of the steering wheel this is quite enough space to put food or a laptop or anything of the sword this is quite handy i'm very impressed and i'm sure that you
