today we're going to start building a small modern looking bookcase this project is sponsored by oak wood veneer and to learn more about veneer check out their website I'll have a link in the description this is a pretty simple project and if you want to build this bookcase I'll have a drawing and a Cutlass that you can find on my website basically you're going to get started by building a plywood box I've already cut the parts to the Box to size so let's go ahead and put the plywood box together and then move on to the next step I'm going to drill and countersink holes so I can attach the sides to the back and I'll measure up two inches on each side sometimes I like to tack the parts in place with the nail gun and that will keep them from shifting around while you're screwing them together now that I've got the sides attached to the back I'm going to move on to the top and bottom and again the first thing I'll do is drill and countersink holes I'm making sure that I'm nice and flush I've got a clamp holding everything together and then I'll come back with an inch and five-eighths screw and I'll just work my way down the line of the cabinet after I built the cabinet I use the table saw to make trim for the face frame the trim measures are half of an inch by three-quarters of an inch and I'll work with this tomorrow it's starting to get it laid but before I call it quits I'm going to take the time to fill all the screw holes in that way I can come in tomorrow sand the cabinet and keep working for wood fill I'm using bondo auto body filler and this is the recommended wood fill when you're working with veneer okay well it's the next day and I've already sanded the Woodville and now I'm going to trim the front of the cabinet with the molding that I made yesterday after I touch the trim to the front of the cabinet I gave the cabinet another standing making sure that the trim was absolutely flush with the surface that I'll be in the urn the next step is to start cutting the veneer and I usually cut the veneer about a half of an inch to three quarters of an inch Andy so I have a overhang all the way around the cabinet and all of those measurements in the cut list the veneer is shipped to you've rolled up and often what I'll do is after I cut it to size I'll roll it in the opposite direction to take some of that roll out and that makes it easier to work with when you start to apply the contact cement I'm using contact cement to glue the veneer to the cabinet and the contact cement has a very strong smell so you really want to wear a mask and I'm going to start with the back of the cabinet I'm using a throwaway brush and a mohair roller to apply the contact cement it's been about 15 minutes and the context mountains now dry and I'm going to use sticks or pieces of wood to help me position the veneer on the back the sticks will not stick to the contact cement as long as they don't have any contact cement on them and what I like to do is put the video in place let's say I'm going to go this way I think and once I have a even overhang on one side I'll remove one of the sticks and then apply pressure on that side so now I'll remove the back stick and now I can pull the whole piece of veneer like this up remove the rest of the stick and carefully work it into place now I'm using a block of wood and applying pressure to the veneer in the direction of the grain and I'm working from the center out you want to be careful around the edges that you don't break the veneer next I'll use a flush cut bit in the router to trim off the overhang now that I finish with the back of the cabinet I'm going to move on to the sides of the cabinet and once I finish with both sides then I'll be near the top of the cabinet so the top is the last surface not over near and that's the order that I'm working in I just finished painting a third coat of white paint on the inside of the cabinet and I'll bring this upstairs to the studio and let the paint dry and while the paint's drying I'll get to work on the base and I think that the base is going to be what really makes this project so let's take a quick look at the drawing and then we'll get started the cabinet will sit on a base and the base is made of two eight quarter mahogany legs that will be connected by two pieces of one by cherry I've designed the leg in the base for this project around this piece of 1/4 mahogany that I've had in the shop this piece measures 3 and 3/4 inches wide by 20 inches long and I want two legs that measure 9 and 3/4 I'm going to shape the board first and then I'll cross cut it to length I've cut this pattern out on the band saw and I'll trace the pattern on both ends of the board and then I'll remove the bulk of the material using the table saw now that I've got some base done the next step is to give all the parts of good sanding and then I'll move on to the finish well I'm really happy with the way this turned out I I really like this clean modern look and I think the bookcase is going to look really nice in my living room I'm not going to put in my living room for a couple of weeks because I'm doing some work to this space but once I do I'll probably post some pictures on Facebook or maybe even make a short video now I know in the beginning of the video I said this was a simple build and I should say it's a simple build if you're used to making cabinets because it's not a minimal tool build but that being said it really is just a plywood box covered with veneer and the only joints that aren't but joints on this project are the miter joints on the face frame now I will have a drawing and a Cutlass that you can find on my website and if you are going to build this definitely check out the QA video that I'm going to post because there's just a couple of things that I'll add to that video that I didn't include in the bill just because they make the video too long and if you have any questions leave them in the comments and I'll answer them in that video so I hope you enjoyed the video thanks for tuning in and I'll see you soon today I'm going to start building a small today I'm going to start building a small modern looking bookcase this project is sponsored by oak wood veneer and to learn more about veneer and their company today I'm going to start building a small modern looking bookcase and this all right today ah this is like ridiculous but it's getting to be the end of the day so I'll work on that tomorrow but before I call it quits I want to fill all the screw holes and for that I'll use auto body body Auto potty bondo body filler all right I'm going to fill the holes and start tomorrow
