how's it going everybody my name is Mike Montgomery and today I'd like to show you how I built this 8 foot long floating Media Console with tons of storage and built-in LED lights on modern builds before I start today's project I'd like to give a big thanks to this video sponsor Phillips you this build is going in the home theater space that I recently converted from an attic and I'm partnering with Philips hue to take this space to the next level I've got down lights for all the recessed fixtures and standard hue bulbs for some accent lighting as well I've been really impressed with both the seamless setup of the hue system and how easy it is to control and customized hue lighting using the hue Bluetooth app play with light and choose from millions of colors to instantly change the look in that mysterium then once you've set the right mood you can save the scene effortlessly with a touch of the hue Bluetooth app one more huge thanks to Philips you for making this video possible you're gonna see more of these lights later on in the video but now I think it's time to get this project started before cutting anything I laid down some polystyrene insulation which is what I use as a cutting mat this allows your tract saw or your circular saw to cut through the plywood but not hit the floor which is obviously important I'll leave a link to the track saw that I'm using down in the description I'll also leave a link to a video where I made a track saw to fit a standard circular saw the pieces I'm cutting our 10 inches wide that's how deep our cabinet is gonna be before you cut anything though make sure and measure the largest item you're going to store in the cabinet and make sure that that's deep enough and make sure you save this off cut it's what we're gonna be making the French cleat out of later on now to one of those 10 inch boards I cut five ten and a half long pieces this is what the sides of the case are going to be as well as all the dividers in between the two outside pieces are going to be ten inches wide just like the bottom in the top of the cabinet but the three internal dividers are gonna be ripped on the table saw two nine and a quarter inches this space is gonna provide enough room for the fringe cleat to be inset in the cabinet and four cords to run between the back of the cabinet and the wall well you see me using here is the Craig k5 pocket hole jig and functionally it does the exact same thing as the $20 pocket hole jig that I'll leave linked in the description bucket holes are a great way to glue in screw cabinets together without fasteners being seen from the outside y'all know I love gorilla wood glue they're a long-term sponsor of mine and I'll leave Amazon links down below I applied a thin bead of glue on each joining edge of the side pieces and then clamped everything in place oftentimes boards will shift a little bit whenever you install pocket hole screws that's why I clamped everything down to hold everything tight [Music] now I don't want those holes to be seen whenever you open up the cabinet so I installed some plugs to conceal the screws I'll come back later on to sand these clean while my glue is drying I grabbed that piece that we were saving for the French cleat and I cut it so it fit on the inside of the cabinet then I set my table saw blade to 45 degrees and ripped it in half doing this is going to create two pieces with a perfectly joining edge one piece will attach to the cabinet while the other secures to the wall this will allow the cabinet to hang on the wall and those two pieces be interlocked together and nothing will be able to fall or move in a perfect world my French cleats would run the entire length of the console but unfortunately I've got some plugs I've got to work around so I measured and marked the distance between the two outlets and I cut the French cleat so that it would fit in between those two plugs once I knew it was at the correct height I could screw into the 2x4 studs behind the drywall and double-check for level now it's time to start working on the door which is my favorite part of the project what I'm doing here is measuring out where I want to make relief cuts in the door that are about a quarter of an inch deep these will gradually get closer together towards the lower portion of the door to create a sunburst or gradient effect I also did this on the facer boards for the stairs in the Attic that I converted into a home theater and since this project is going in that room I figured it would be the perfect application I just love the idea of having an foot-long cabinet with an eight-foot-long door that's your something super custom that you wouldn't be able to buy at a store these are the easiest hinges that I have ever installed and I totally recommend them for beginner DIY errs typically European or concealed style hinges require a Forstner bit to recess a portion of the hinge inside of the door but these surface mount to both the cabinet and the back side of the door they're really strong and they've got quite a bit of snap to them which keeps the door closed if your cabinet isn't perfect after installing a hinge on each side of the console I realized there was a little bit of wiggle towards the center of the door so I grabbed two more hinges and I installed them on each side of the center divider this is a super common trick that I use all the time installing hinges and other types of hardware I put a few beads of Gorilla super glue gel on the piece and then I glue it in place then once it's had a couple of minutes to dry I come back and I drill pilot holes and nothing is able to shift on me this makes everything a little bit more accurate but really it just cuts down on headaches with pieces moving around on me I purposefully cut my door a little bit oversized that way once I had everything installed I can measure and trim it to the perfect height I know I already mentioned it but I just want to stress this project could absolutely be done with a circular saw and a straightedge there's really no complicated cuts and everything is simple in square perfect I sanded everything up to 150 grit making sure to use my RZ master protect myself from all that sawdust plus if you check out using the code modern builds you will always get a discount I'll leave a link in the description any time that I build a project with exposed plywood edges I use maker brands simple finish it's a natural oil-based finish that really brings out the depth in wood grain and especially plywood edges I mean come on just check that out [Music] well you've got to do is apply a thick coat with an old t-shirt let it set on the surface of the wood for about 15 minutes to soak in and then wipe off all the excess all of the bulbs in the home theater are Phillips you bluetooth-enabled but once I upgraded to the bridge I was able to connect these LED light strips to with this upgrade I'm able to expand the system throughout the entire house now this isn't the first time that I've used LED strips in a project but it is my first experience using Philips hue LEDs and I've got to say I was genuinely impressed the adhesive strip on the back is stronger than any other LEDs that I've used and it couldn't be easier to connect through the bridge in the hue app so I had close to two feet overhanging the French cleat on each side which was allowing the console to droop a little bit to fix that I drilled directly into the studs behind the cabinet then I was able to feed cords wherever they needed to go and install all of my electronics [Music] while I was adding all these lights to the theater room I thought it would be cool to get one of these wall hangers and hang a pendant light from it on the projector wall and for obvious reasons I don't want to screw into that projector wall so what you see me using is gorilla mounting tape which is a super strong double-sided tape to attach the hanger to the wall it's completely out of the way and way stronger than I expected it to be after that I grabbed a pendant light that I picked up from Amazon as well and I looped it a few times around that hanger I'll be using one of these standard Philips hue bulbs in the pendant light and it controls and connects the same way as all the recessed lighting that I installed earlier all I needed to do is screw it into the lamp and it connected in seconds and with that this project is done I couldn't be more excited about this project the original console that I built for this room was a little bit of a rush job it had exposed screws and was not put together nearly as well really I just needed to get something done quickly and I couldn't be more happy to have a quality piece of furniture to replace it you can learn more about the philips hue bulbs and products that i'm using by following the link down in the description that's meet Hugh calm and don't forget to follow at Philips hue on Instagram for more lighting inspiration so I just want to give one more big thanks to you all for watching today's video if you're interested in building this project make sure and follow the link down in the description to my website where I've got a written article with free pdf claims inside those plans not only will it be a materials and cut list but they're all could be a really simple diagram that way you've got all the info you need to build this yourself I'd like to give one more things to Philips you for sponsoring today's episode without sponsors I really couldn't take the time to build all these projects and create the plans like I do if you don't already you should be following me on Instagram I am at modern builds there you can see everything I'm doing between projects you can even see sneak peeks of projects before I release them somewhere on the screen there'll be a subscribe button make sure and hit that as well as the notification belt down below so you can stay updated thanks again and we'll see you next time modern builds by everybody [Music]
