every distrait back here in this view I'm going to show you how to create an external boot drive using a solid-state drive so you can move to Mac OS maja they also talked about why you might want to do that and stick around to the end because I'm going to address some of the common questions that you may have all right let's get started and head to the computer alright the first step before you do this is to check out the Apple support page I was gonna do is type in Mac OS Mojave a support you should find this page and then you can check the compatibility of your computer to see if you're able to upgrade to Mojave now why would you want to do this though one of the reasons is even in 2019 you can get a new iMac with a 5400 rpm hard drive now that's a spinning hard drive it's slower than a solid-state drive now these are very affordable now in 2019 you can pick up a 500 gigabyte Samsung t5 solid-state drive for around $100 u.s. so this will allow you to install mac mojave on this and you can boot to this so it's an external hard drive now let's talk about some of the reasons why you might want to do that as well maybe you have an older iMac that's slow for example I have a 2014 iMac you can see right here it's a late 2014 now it has a fusion drive now what a fusion drive is is one part of it is solid-state and the other part is a spinning drive but it's a very small portion that is the solid state portion and also we're talking about a 2014 solid-state drive hopefully they're a little faster in 2019 so let's talk about a few things first now we're gonna keep our assistant Drive intact but it's always a good idea in case something goes wrong to back up your system drive so maybe do that first using time machine select a backup disk backup your main system Drive first just in case something goes wrong alright so we're gonna go to the finder the first thing we want to do is go to applications in the Finder window and then we want to go to Disk Utility so you want to look for utilities right here so go to applications utilities open that up and then you want to find your Disk Utility so you see right here Disk Utility you double click that that will open up you know this is the systems drive we don't want to erase this so make sure you're aware of where you are now I've plugged in the samsung t5 and that's it right there now if you're not seeing the full view you could see it might be on show only volumes and then if you click here it's not going to allow you to do this properly so for example if I went to click on erase you could see I only have two columns here I'm gonna click cancel if you go over to view and you go show all devices and then you click on the very top here and you click a race you'll see now I have three so in the top portion we can name this whatever we want I just already did this and I called it SSD Mojave just so I'd know for your format you want to make sure you choose Mac OS extended journaled so we have that and then for your scheme you want to make sure that you're on GUI D partition map and then you would click a race now I've already erased that and installed Mojave so I'm not going to do that again but these are the settings that you want right here and then you would erase that and then that would allow us to install Mojave on that now the next step is to go to the App Store so I've already gone there too I'm gonna go to the App Store and then you would see we have open so now what I want to do is click on this and you should see this open up now if I click on continue and I click on agree I'm gonna agree now it just shows our system hard drive we want to install this on the Samsung t5 I'm gonna click on show all disks and you can see now I have a LaCie hard drive that's a backup drive that's just a spinning disk there's our system drive now here's the Samsung t5 that we just erased with those settings I showed you and we named it SSD Mojave I would click on that and then I would just install the operating system now that's probably going to take maybe 20 to 30 minutes depending on your computer now once that is finished it'll walk you through this setup like you'd normally would so if you just bought a new computer a new Mac it's going to ask for your country your language you're gonna set up your iCloud just follow that step by step if you've done it before it's a pretty simple procedure all right I want to mention a couple of other reasons why you might want to do this so I'm on Mac High Sierra right now and my camera that I'm using right now the upgrade software doesn't work on Mojave so this will allow me to boot to Mac High Sierra or boot to Mojave whatever I wish so it gives me some flexibility now also to you want to open up your system preferences and go to startup disk and you'll see the two different discs so if you want to go from Mojave to say your system drive so say you wanted to have two different systems like i have high sierra and mojave what you'd have to do is click the lock and then choose macintosh HD as your start up drive and then it will start up with that otherwise it's gonna always start to your external SSD so that's just the tip now if everything's running fine you can always go back and you can erase your macintosh HD and you could use that as a storage disk if you feel like so that's just a couple tips to get you started so right now I'm on High Sierra still because I don't have my screen capture software on Mojave but Mojave is running just fine and then what I can do is just install the applications that I use the most now this is different than a fresh install a fresh install is a different procedure if you just want to do a fresh install so Google that on YouTube and you'll probably find videos on how to do that so I want to talk about a couple of maybe common questions that people have now one of them might be does this work on a PC I've never tried it on a PC I don't know I don't think so another question might be will this work for a hackintosh build now a hackintosh build is very specific hardware wise so you have to have very specific hardware for that to work as well as you have to do some tweaks I've never created a hackintosh so I don't know now if you have any support related questions there's a lot of support help for Mac contact Apple for any support related questions that you may have also the Mac's doors have Apple geniuses I'm not employed by Apple they get paid to answer your support questions so if you have any support related questions about this procedure contact Apple if you're new here and you're not already a subscriber my name is Craig vechta and if you're in a photography you should hit that subscribe button right now and also hit
