i'm lindsay from american patchwork and quilting we hear from many quilters that basting is their least favorite step of the quilt making process it's sometimes hard to get your backing smooth and the quilt top straight when you're layering the quilt sandwich but using pool noodles is an effective and easy method for basting so i'll show you how so first lay your backing fabric right side down on a flat surface and then place a pool noodle on the top edge and then you kind of want to hold the backing fabric against the top edge and wrap it around the pool noodle and then pin it in place so you can see i already added a few pins but we're gonna pin all the way across just to keep that backing fabric really smooth and tight against the pool noodle okay then once it's all pinned in place you're going to keep rolling stop when you need to smooth things out if you need to you just want to make sure that you're starting off really straight really smooth and then roll until it's all the way rolled up and then just add a few more pins to keep it rolled in place so i'm just going to add a few at the edge to keep everything from unrolling now you're going to repeat this process with your batting piece and a second pool noodle so i've already added my pins across the top and i'm just going to roll and make sure everything is really smooth and straight then add pins to secure when you have it all rolled up you're going to do the process one more time with your quilt top facing right side up and a third pool noodle so twist it add your pins and then roll [Music] now it's time to make our quilt sandwich okay so you're gonna take your backing pool noodle put it on a flat surface i've already removed the pins so you're going to start unrolling it just until it hits you know maybe a few feet or until the end of the table in my case so this is about as much as i can unroll it if you're using basting spray you'll want to spray the backing before you add the batting but if you're using a pin basting method you can move on to the batting pool noodle okay same method i've got my batting pool noodle down i've unpinned it and now i'm gonna just roll it out you might need to adjust as needed like you can see i'm not totally lined up with my backing so it's really easy to just roll it back up reposition and then unroll again until everything is really straight everything is lined up right and then unroll it until you hit your backing pool noodle and if you're spray basting you'll want to do another spray on top of your batting before you add your quilt top okay we're taking our quilt top pool noodle now we're centering it on the backing and batting and we're unrolling until we hit the other pool noodles so now if i spray baste it i have this basted ready to go if not i'll add some pins to pin based of this section before i move on so once you have this section basted in your preferred method you're just gonna pull it towards you it might fall off the table and then you will unroll more remember if you're spray basting you'll spray before you unroll your other layers keep going baste this layer pull it towards you and just keep going until you get to the end of your quilt isn't that so easy so the quilt top we just demonstrated that with this small it's a wall size quilt but what if you want to do a bigger quilt like a throw size or a bed size quilt well you can actually connect two pool noodles using a pvc connector so you can find these at your local hardware store um i just brought a pool noodle into there so i was sure i was getting the correct width of pvc connector and if you need to they can cut it there for you to make it the length you need so you really just stick it into one hole of one of the pool noodles and then you'll put it into the second pool noodle hole and that will make a very long pool noodle for you to work with if you struggle with basting this technique may just be what you need to make it easier and faster i hope you give it a try
