How to Assemble a High-Hat Clutch

today we'll be talking about how to assemble a hi-hat clutch here on the percussion discussion [Music] a hi-hat clutch is a piece of hardware that secures your top hi-hat symbol to the rod in the middle of your hi-hat stand this allows you to press the pedal up and down and the hi-hat will move along with the rod allowing you to open and close your hi-hats so let's look at how to assemble a hi-hat clutch now to begin we actually have to take it apart we'll take off this bottom screw and once you've done that we'll set that aside and then you're only going to take off the bottom piece of felt everything else can actually stay on your hi-hat clutch now once you've got that all off we're just going to kind of push these to the top so we have room to do whatever we need to on the clutch and it's off so there we go i'm going to grab my symbol and we're just going to slide the assembly that we have right into the top and we're going to flip it over okay with it flipped over we're going to take that second piece of felt that we took off and we're going to go ahead and slide it on you'll see that you have a piece of felt encompassing both the top and the bottom of the hi-hat symbol that's just to protect it make sure you don't have metal rubber against metal now we're going to take our bottom screw and we're going to screw it on now some will actually screw all the way on and they'll stop and that'll tell you how far you need to go mine that i'm using right now actually does this and then others can actually keep on screwing up the bar but i recommend putting it about halfway up the tube of the hi-hat clutch that's probably all you'll have to do with the bottom uh some of them do have a locking nut on the side and all this does is prevent it from coming loose while you're playing so with that done we're going to flip it back over to the top of our hi-hat clutch we can see in the middle we have our piece of felt so we're just going to slide that all the way down to where it's touching the hi-hat and then we're going to take this bottom screw and we're going to screw it down until it's tight i know many people have different preferences on how tight or how loose they like it while they're playing this is completely up to you i prefer mine tighter because i like a tighter sound on the drum set but whatever you like to do so get it set the way you like and then we're going to bring this top screw down and we're going to tighten it against that other screw and again tightening it's just going to make sure we're secure so hopefully it's not falling apart while we're playing now that you've got the clutch secured in your hi-hat go ahead and place it on your hi-hat stand and you're good to go thank you for joining me here on the percussion discussion if you have any questions or suggestions please leave them down in the comment section and if you want to learn more about percussion or see any more percussion related content go ahead and hit that subscribe button i'll have more content out soon take care goodbye
