the hi-hat symbol stand clutch is designed to secure a pair of symbols that we will show you how to install later in this video the hi-hat clutch mechanism is as simple as can be to the experienced drummer but can be so misunderstood by the beginner that it warrants its own video segment here an ingenious little device to say the least we first remove the bottom nut by unscrewing it all the way to the end of the threads and immediately after that we remove only one of these two felt pads leaving the second felt pad on the threaded shaft as shown the two threaded metal tension nuts located directly above this remaining felt ring provide tension adjustment on the top symbol so when the top symbol is inserted and the two bottom pieces we just removed are reinstalled this part of the mechanism stays on top of the symbol the symbol is slid over the shaft between the two felts the second felt that you removed earlier slips back on after the symbol and the whole thing is then secured by the bottom nut when you screw it back into place there is a butterfly adjustment screw at the top of this clutch that you use to tighten the mechanism onto the upper rod of the hi-hat stand now let's go through this procedure again only using real symbols in a real assembly hi-hats by the way come in pairs and they are actually labeled top and bottom the reason is because one is heavier which is the symbol that always goes on the bottom as a matter of fact it's a good thing to know that if they are not labeled simply hold the two at the same time and feel which one is the heaviest so you'll know which one goes on the bottom or the one that is installed first in this assembly procedure so let's start with the bottom hi-hat which is placed upside down bell side down over the upper pole rod and simply rests on the pad never let cymbals touch metal to metal always make sure any symbol only touches a felt pad not metal or any other hard surface in this case make sure the bottom hi-hat symbol rests on a felt pad which sits on top of a reinforcing metal washer notice also how the symbol is protected from touching the metal shaft by slipping it over this nylon sleeve symbols should never be touching metal to metal so here we are again with the heavier of the two symbols placed upside down over the pole rod and over the nylon sleeve and now it simply rests freely on top of the felt pad underneath now we are ready to install the lighter weight top symbol with the help of our hi-hat clutch start by removing the bottom nut by unscrewing it all the way to the end of the threads insert the clutch through the top of the symbol bell as shown now turn the symbol over and reinstall the felt pad on the bottom and then reinstall the nut and screw it down completely tight so that it doesn't loosen when played now turn the symbol right side up and as long as it moves freely you're in good shape because that means your tension nuts are correctly adjusted to revisit the tension nut adjustment first make sure the bottom nut is secure flip it over as long as both the bottom and the top felt are resting against the surface of the symbol simply turn the bottom tension nut clockwise to push the top felt tighter against the symbol now sort of shake the whole thing while holding it underneath at the clutch to make sure it's got a firm feeling you don't want it to feel sloppy and then once you have your desired tension counter lock it in with the top nut and you're ready to go now the entire mechanism is placed over the pole rod and you may have to back off the butterfly adjustment screw at the top of this clutch so that everything can pass through all the way down to the bottom symbol where we will let it rest for now while we proceed to our final step which is to adjust the foot pedal this is the easy part because all you have to do is push down on the pedal with your foot and you will see the pull shaft moving up and down at the top where your symbol is waiting for you start by pushing down on the pedal about an inch and while holding it there with your foot tighten the butterfly screw the top symbol becomes one with the pull shaft and crashes against the bottom symbol every time your foot pushes down on the pedal congratulations you now have a working hi-hat symbol stand that you put together correctly the first time and one the chances are we'll be operating properly from here on
