today I'm going to show you how to add copyright and metadata information to your photos in Lightroom hey guys and welcome to phlearn my name is Aaron NACE and you can find me on phlearn comm where we make learning photoshop & photography fun and I pumped about today's episode guys because I'm teaching you all about copyright and metadata information you can add to your photos in your catalogue in this episode we're going to talk about what metadata is and why it's advantageous for you to add it to your photos we're also going to show you how to add metadata and copyright information in lightroom you'll learn how to create presets for importing and exporting as well as how to check your metadata online basically it's information stored inside the image file that tells you how the image was created and in this case we're going to show you how to add copyright information to that as well so we're going to jump into finder so I can show you what this looks like on the computer so here we have a couple different images of my buddy Harrison now you can see if I just hit the spacebar here this is what the image looks like so we all know a picture that that's some of the information which is great now I'm going to right click here and go down to get info and this is going to bring up info on the actual file now if I click on this more info you can see we can actually find out information on what this image was taken on we've got a 5d Mark 3 shot in Adobe RGB the focal length is 170 millimeters we even have our f-stop and our shutter speed so you can see that information it's like it's not visible in the actual image but it's stored in the same file so that is what we're going to be working with today information that's stored in the file and metadata can be stored in different file formats that includes JPEG TIFF Photoshop as well as RAW files now as a photographer you want to make sure everyone in the world sees your images and if someone's doing a google search and they're typing for you know whatever beach balls a beautiful picture of yours comes up but you can't see just by looking at the photo who took the actual image that's another reason why metadata is important you can actually use Google to search images by their metadata and if a person downloads and illegally uses your image you have protection in that file your copyright information is stored within the actual picture file so now you know a little bit about metadata and you're probably incredibly pumped up let's figure out how to add metadata to our images and we're going to be using Adobe Lightroom to do so so jumping into Lightroom we've got a bunch of photos of my buddy Harrison now I want to add my copyright information so everyone knows that if they see this photo I took this image so what we're going to do I'm going to click on one of the photos now we're going to go over here on the right hand side to where we see things like key wording keyword lists and here we see metadata you can see preset none let's go down here to where it says edit presets okay edit presets and here we have our edit metadata presets okay now this is the big thing we want to make sure to pay extra attention here so we're going to go down to where it says IP TC copyright let's go ahead and click that let's our copyright we're going to create the copyright symbol which on a Mac is option G gives us our copyright and then I'm going to just say my name aaron nace and we'll say all rights reserved there we go and that's the copyright copyright status here we're going to change to copyright it now here in our terms we're going to add all rights reserved no reproduction without prior permission our copyright URL in this case is going to be my website aaron acecomm now it's time to add creator information which in this case is just going to be my information in your case it's going to be your information alright so the Creator here is going to be aaron nace okay now the city we can put in Chicago if you want to do your postal code in your phone and your email address you can do that I would recommend doing a website at the very least and maybe a information all right info at phlearn comm is going to be our email all right there we are and the last thing we're going to do is our IPTC status so here in our credit line we're going to go ahead and type in aaron nace and phlearn comm and our source is going to be Aaron NACE all right that looks great alright guys now that's the information you need to keep your photos protected you can add more I've just filled in the very basics that are going to get you going so now we want to save this preset because I don't want to do that every time it'd be super annoying so what I'm going to do is go up here to the top where it says preset custom and I'm going to go to save current settings as new preset all right we'll just call this aaron nace 2015 alright and hit create there we go and done so now it's time to go ahead and apply this to our photos so let's click on this photo here we have our metadata tab and I can just go ahead and create preset I can go say aaron nace 2015 and all of a sudden look at that creator aaron nace copyright aaron nace all right reserved Wow now I know who to contact when I want to steal this photo alright and how do we sync that to the rest of the photos well if we click on this photo I'm going to go ahead and shift-click on the rest of our photos we're going to go to sync metadata and it's going to go ahead and synchronize all of this metadata from one photo to the rest all right that looks great so every single photo now will have my information alright guys our metadata and our copyright information has been added to all of our images now let's show you how to add presets so you can take care of it while importing and exporting it's going to make your life easier so now that you know how to add metadata and copyright information to your images we're going to make it a little bit easier because you're not going to like remember to do that every single time so I'll show you how to do this while you import so as your photos come in to your computer it's automatically going to give it this information so what we're going to do let's go ahead to our import dialog we're just gonna click on import on the bottom left of Lightroom ok now we're going to go ahead and say metadata there we go there's a folder with these we're going to be importing and here we're going to see on the right we have something called apply during import and look at this develop settings where don't need anything there under metadata I've got Aaron NACE 2015 so as I add these into Lightroom it's going to stick my information automatically into all these images and because I'm super lazy I can actually create a preset for by imports so not only do we have these photos are going to have the metadata applied to them but if I want to do this in the future I'm going to go right down to here at the very bottom where it says import preset here it says none I'm going to just go to save current settings as new preset there we go and we'll call this aaron nace create so now every time a photo comes into Lightroom it's going to have my information on it so now we know how to add metadata and copyright information to our files whether they're in Lightroom already or whether we're importing now I'm going to show you a way you can actually use that metadata to catalog and search through your images so we've added copyright information to our images and that's super important now there's another type of metadata called keywords and we can add those to our images to make it easier to search through our images as well as catalog them okay two keyword one of your images all you need to do is click on an image here make sure you're in your library panel and I'm going to go down to keywording there we go and now it's my job to just type in a couple keywords so I'll type in Harrison cuz that's his name type in portrait okay and we'll type in good-looking man and hit enter awesome so those are the keywords that are applied to this image now so if I were to export this these keywords are stuck in this file as well so we've added keywords to one file and now we want to make sure they're in all the files from that same photo shoot so if I click on this file we can see good looking man and Harrison in portrait if I click on this photo we see nothing because I don't have any keywords now if I shift-click on these two photos you can see we have good-looking man Harrison in portrait but there's a little asterisk next to them meaning that's only applied to some of the images in my selection so I'm going to shift click on all of the images here and here in my keyword set I'm just going to click on these which is going to add these keywords to the images so good looking man Harrison and portrait there we go so now all these images you can click on any of them and they're going to have those keywords applied to them so these keywords come in really handy when you have a big catalogue of files let's say you have thousands of images you have some landscapes you have some portraits things like that and you want to very quickly see just your portraits well that's where keywords come in so here in our keyword list you can actually see we've got a good-looking man Harrison and portrait and I can actually click on this right arrow here and it's going to show me all the images with keyword of Harrison so we have now our key filter is filtered by keyword Harrison we could go by portrait and it's going to show us all the portraits in this series now we only have these images but if I had a thousand images and 500 portraits they would all show up provided they're all tagged with the keyword portrait you can also do a search for keywords just go up here to text and then type in whatever you'd like so if I typed in time for instance nothing comes up because I don't have anything key worded time but if I type in portrait I have to spell it correct there we go if I type in portrait they're going to come up as well so I'm able to search through thousands and thousands of thousands of photos just for the portraits simply by typing it in there and they're going to appear right here and that's the magic of keywords which are a type of metadata all right so we've learned about adding copyright information and keywords and metadata to our images now just to make sure that that actually did add that stuff for the image what we're going to do is export it out of Lightroom and then upload it to a website which checks your metadata okay so here in Lightroom I'm going to right click on our photo we're going to go down to export here and we're going to stick it on the desktop there we go desktop let's hit open and there we go we found an awesome website that's going to check your metadata for free online the site is called meta pix M ETA P icz com you just drag and drop your images right there so here we have on our desktop I'm going to simply drag my image file right there it's going to load for a second and then I'm just going to scroll down and we're going to see our metadata information so here's information about the camera and here we have our author and copyright so copyright aaron nace all rights reserved that is exactly what we want to see so now I'm doubly sure that when my image goes out on the Internet it's got my name and my copyright on it and you are going to have your name and your copyright because if you put aaron nace all rights reserved that would just just don't do that it's not a good idea I'll do that alright guys that's how to add copyright keyword and metadata information to your photos in Lightroom just follow these steps to review the easiest way to add metadata is through a preset so click on one of your images then go up to your metadata window and then down to edit metadata presets it's up to you to fill in these boxes with your information just remember IPTC copyright you do want to fill in as well as your status once you're done entering your information be sure to save it as a new preset you can just use your name to make this even easier you can apply these presets while you import your photos to do so just go to the apply during import dialog and then down where you see metadata just click on your preset name it's going to apply all your metadata to your photos as they come in to your computer key words are going to help you stay organized in your catalog you can use them to tag images with things like portrait landscape or even handsome looking dude and then finally do check all your metadata is in place head over to meta pics with a z.com I don't own this website by the way and upload your file it's going to show you your author and copyright information as long as you got your name you're good to go and that's all there is to adding metadata including copyright and keyword information to your images so they're more secure online and if that sounds like a fun time to you and you want to continue having fun with
