[Music] I know [Music] impact frames are a common technique used in anime to emphasize hits and create epic moments during action sequences these frames usually depict the moment of impact with exaggerated visual effects to emphasize the force of a hit impact frames are typically monochromatic high contrast sequences of frames that are shown briefly and often rendered in a distinct style that stands out for the rest of the animation this can include bold sketchy outlines heavy shading or bright colors to maximize their impact and add the most energy to an animation in Demon Slayer hinokami Chronicles impact frames are extensively used during combat sequences to add excitement and intensity to the action the impact frames in the game are rendered in a surprisingly faithful style to the anime and manga with heavy shading and bold outlines that give the attacks a sense of weight and power one of the best examples I find can be found in zenitsu's finishing move where the character knocks up the opponent into the air and dashes at lightning deliver a massive blow of lightning in the blink of an eye while punctuated by impact frames that emphasize the force and impact of each hit but how did they do it while impact frames for games can be technically made in real time by using post-processing shaders to alter animation frames dynamically these techniques often end up falling a little flat and fail to capture that sketchy hyper stylized look that gives iconic hand-drawn impact frames their Swagger this secret sauce makes demon slayer's impact frames look really authentic because the animators took time to insert hand-drawn impact frames that blend seamlessly with the finisher cinematics let me show you what I mean let's look at the animation again but this time I want you to count with me how many sequences we can find when zenitsu unleashes his full power the impact is so powerful that it shatters the ground at that moment there are three separate impact frames used to emphasize this impact looking at each frame it seems pretty clear to me that the animators took frames from the animation and edited them either with Photoshop or after effects to get these high contrast shots and then inserted the edit frames back into the sequence immediately after we found our second impact frame sequence the camera flies in to do a close-up of the subject's glowing eyes but these four impact frames are drawn entirely by hand the third impact frame is a single frame used on the jump to add some extra weight and the fourth impact frame sequence is another hand-drawn sequence that emphasizes the final dash making it feel like more of an explosion the fifth and final sequence occurs right as the final impact lands using a combination of red black and white overlays and some manual hand-drawn elements to make the hit feel like a death dealing blue the impact frames in Demon Slayer hinokami Chronicles effectively add weight and intensity to certain abilities making the game feel more like a real anime [Music] [Applause] smearing also known as motion blur or frame blending is a technique used in 2D animation to convey a sense of motion and speed the concept of smears dates back to the early days of Animation when animators experimented with different methods to create smooth fluid movements in their hand-drawn Creations creating a smear involves stretching or distorting the image of an object across multiple frames following the direction of the movement this Distortion effectively Bridges the gap between keyframes giving the illusion of a seamless action while smears can be seen as a purely practical tool for bridging frames they've also developed into an artistic element in animation many animators have developed their own distinct smearing Styles adding a unique visual Flair to their work in Japanese anime for example smears and action lines are often used to create dramatic high energy action sequences that have become the medium signature 3D games have adopted these techniques to create more Dynamic engaging and Visually for example OverWatch animators have pushed the boundaries of smearing by applying it to particle effects and motion trails and combining it with other techniques like squash and stretch however Demon Slayer does it a little differently to add perceived speed and motion to their animations Demon Slayer animations in game uses speed lines to emphasize movement and create a line of motion that gives each strike a more distinct trajectory these speed lines are used liberally in the foreground and background to give the feeling of movement in a certain direction even though the character may not be moving in addition refraction is often used to enhance the visual impact of character special abilities such as Elemental attacks or powerful strikes when a character unleashes a powerful attack or skill the light and color surrounding the point of impact may appear distorted as if the air itself is being affected by the shear force of the action when examining the use of smearing and animation and speed lines in both the Demon Slayer game and traditional anime it becomes clear that they share the objective of creating visually Dynamic and engaging content for Their audience renowned anime series like Dragon Ball Naruto and one piece have effectively used these techniques resulting in Unforgettable and exciting moments that define the genre in the case of the Demon Slayer hinokami Chronicles game the animation team has adapted these techniques to accommodate to the specific requirements and limitations of the gaming medium [Music] in anime visual effects are key to making high action scenes pop with their attention to detail and fluidity the hand-drawn sequences create a sense of dynamism and intensity that's hard to beat each frame is a masterpiece contributing to a larger breathtaking spectacle growing up I was completely hooked on Dragon Ball the high energy scenes were like nothing else and I'd spend hours drawing Spirit bombs final flashes and all manner of kamehameha's I'll admit when I heard about the Demon Slayer game I had my doubts how often have we seen games fail to capture the magic of the anime that they're based on but this game I think it's truly nailed it the battles in the game are just as fluid and dynamic as in the anime you can see tanjiro's water-based attacks in all of their glory and it's not just a visual treat it's a part of the gameplay adding a whole new layer of strategy this game manages to recreate the authentic anime style with remarkable Fidelity instead of relying solely on simulations and particles it returns to hand-drawn sequences for its visual effects the result is a game that looks like an anime and feels like one too but this is stylized station so how is it actually done I'd like to introduce you to the concept of flip books in simple terms a flipbook in game development is a texture Atlas containing frames of an animation much like a traditional flip book you'd flick through with your thumb remember the ones you made as a kid each frame is a snapshot of an effect at a particular moment in time and when these frames are played back rapidly you get a smooth animated effect I actually created a tutorial on how to make flip books in Unreal Engine so feel free to check out that tutorial it's on my patreon I'll leave a link in the description in the case of the Demon Slayer game each attack each Elemental effect is a series of hand-drawn images played back at high speed this technique allows the game to capture the fluidity and dynamism of the anime's action scenes creating a visual spectacle that is not just beautiful to look at but also integral to the gameplay so next time you're playing Demon Slayer and you see tangiro unleash a water or Firebase attack remember that you're not just looking at a cool visual effect you're looking at a series of hand-drawn images played back so quickly that they look like a single fluid motion so what happens when you combine impact frames smearing hand-drawn VFX and some really high quality animation well you might get something like this so yeah Demon Slayer is pretty cool [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music]
