welcome to another animated explainer video by sergeant's roofing in this episode we wanted to show you how roof ventilation saves you thousands of dollars over the life of owning your home to start we need to make sure you have a good understanding of attic ventilation at the base of your roof extended over the walls of your house you have a soffit area this is where cold outdoor air comes into your roof space this is why attic insulation is so important you want to trap the heat inside your living space and keep the cold out however most homes lose some heat into the attic that heats up the incoming air and we need to get that hot air out of the house and exchange it for fresh cool air amazingly 7 out of 10 homes we do estimates on or below the bare minimum requirements code for ventilation so how do you know if you're one of the seven look for the signs is the house uncomfortably hot in the summertime possibly even hotter than it is outside after dark or in the winter do you find large amounts of icicles hanging from the roof are your shingles wearing out faster than the ones on home installed at the same time these are all signs of poor ventilation in the summertime heat from the Sun will bake the surface of the shingles and that will heat up the attic space eventually that radiant heat will absorb into the home this will increase air conditioning costs and make you very uncomfortable not to mention the heat will cause the shingles to warp and deteriorate prematurely that hot attic air needs to escape as fast as the soffits can let new fresh cool air in in the winter poor ventilation is even worse radiant heat from the home will escape up into the attic space which heats up the roof deck and causes the snow to melt off the roof while in many cases allowing condensation build up on the inside face once the melting snow reaches the base the cold air coming into the soffits will freeze that thought snow back into ice and form a dam and allow water to pool and creep back up under the shingles this causes rotten roof deck mold reduction of the r-value of insulation and eventually roof leaks a proper ventilation system allows for a constant steady flow of air into the soffit and out of the vents constantly keeping the attic space at the same temperature as it is outside it's pretty easy to see how this can save you lots of money because it reduces your energy costs and allows for longer shingle life in fact we've seen roofs with great ventilation last 25 to 50 percent longer than the neighbors with poor ventilation it's a no-brainer so how do you get good ventilation well it all starts with knowing the options you cannot just go cut holes in your roof there's the sixty fifty standard vent that gives you 50 points of airflow each these weatherproof vents allow for easy flow of air out of the vent while protecting against the elements however these do not allow for an even flow of air and distribution of heat plus require a lot of holes to be cut in your roof to get the points needed a better solution is ridge venting this puts a special cap on the peak of the roof that allows air to flow directly out of the top of the roof these ads 73 points of ventilation per section however they're not able to be installed on many residential homes with intricate roof lines and require a lot of labor to install the best option is the newer design turbo vents which are not to be confused with the old whirlybird style turbine vents these have no moving parts and use the power of low and high pressure areas to take advantage of the flow of winds to create a suction effect that pulls hot air from the home better than everything else available on the market these get 117 points of ventilation without factoring in the variable increase from wind power there are even special baffles built inside to allow air to come out without letting rain or snow into your roof space with no maintenance or moving parts the turbo vent is the best way to increase the flow of air into and out of your attic space they reduce the total number of holes needed in your roof offer lower summer home temperatures plus increase the life of your shingles have been hurricane weather tested and require no work from the homeowner to do their job for more information on roofing components and how they affect your home check out our blog at Sargeant's roofing com [Music]
