okay so you think you're ready to buy a rolls-royce phantom the card has been around for about 15 years now they've depreciated down to about 20 percent now you can afford to buy it the real question is can you afford to own it hey everybody I'm video Bob and for those of you have been watching my channel for a while you know that this is my 2004 rolls-royce phantom I picked this thing up crazy cheap it was the cheapest one available in the country bought it for only $65,000 cash the guy was asking 75 and I was assured negotiator and got it knocked down but there was a reason reason why it was so cheap because it needed some much-needed maintenance the car had about 75 thousand miles on it it had aftermarket wheels on it and it's got this rat on it the original color of the car is actually a silver and it's been wrapped in this white and black which I really like actually the people that are subscribers of mine who have been watching me with this car for the last couple of months know that we've done the alternators water pump hoses and belts lower suspension brakes all sorts of things and now the car is very reliable I Drive it every single day it's my daily driver but there is a cost of ownership to having one of these things and we're gonna talk about all those different factors let's talk about the sheer size of this car okay this is gonna be a huge factor in the costs I'm 6 to 240 pounds big guy I'm dwarfed by this car this thing is 19 and a half feet long I think something like 6,000 pounds now it's not gonna get good gas mileage and you wouldn't expect it to I think it's got a pretty big tank of about 26 gallons and I think I've been averaging I don't know 14 15 miles a gallon which isn't bad for a car like this my Cadillac cts-v doesn't do that good so you got to factor in the cost of filling this thing up and driving it around and there's some other factors we're gonna talk about namely the wheels now these wheels are not the ones that came on this car these are original OEM rolls-royce wheels and center caps but these aren't the ones that came with this car the first generation rolls-royce phantom seven that came out in 2003 utilized some wheels called the PAC system pa X now the PAC system wheels were a run-flat system in which there was like a plastic rubber donut thing mounted to the inside of the rim and then the tire was locked on with a bead so that if there was a blowout the tire wouldn't separate from the rim and you could still drive on the tire for quite a distance so there is no spare tire there is no jack nothing has had nature the problem of the PAC system was it was very expensive a lot of dealerships and a lot of tire stores just didn't wanna invest into the money that it was required to buy the machine and therefore they stopped making the tires and there was a limited number of back stock tires so up until recently which as I understand it there are no more packs tires available they were selling for as much as fifteen thousand dollars a set so you sell a lot of Rolls Royces being offered that were early 2003 four fives with only twenty thirty thousand miles on them with the original wheels and tires and they were a good deal because well the solution is you're gonna have to get rid of the PAC's wheels and put on either take offs like I did off of another Rolls Royce or aftermarket wheels now one of the things you really have to be wary of is if you're going to get the aftermarket wheels is an option you can get those for a couple of thousand bucks the problem is you don't want to get the big wagon wheels as I call them the ones that are too wide you know the donk wheels because this car wasn't made for that you want to get the right size the wheels that were on this car the one I originally got it I think there were twenty fours or 26 s they had slightly damaged the fender and the wheel liner from hitting hitting that and they just rode like crap the car is designed to have the wheels that were designed to be on the car for the maximum amount of comfort and quite frankly I think the originals look good and lucky for you you can buy take offs like I got these for a great price but here's what you're going to be looking at once you even get the wheels on the particular 21 inch tires that fit these wheels these are a Goodyear run flats they're about nine hundred dollars apiece so you got to consider you're gonna spend as much as anywhere from two to four thousand dollars on tires whenever you have to do a tire maintenance on the car but you really want to have the run-flats you do not want to have the non run-flat Chiefy tires on this car because if you do have a blowout these front wings are inder's as we call them in the united states they're made of a composite material whereas the rest of the car is made out of aluminum this is made out of a composite and this will just rip apart and you don't want to replace a $13,000 fender because you were too cheap to put a decent tire on the car so you need to consider that if you buy a first-generation Phantom 7 that has the original pax wheels you will absolutely need to change the rims and tires that's just gonna be something you're gonna need to do now here's another thing to consider if you're like me and you buy one of these cars and it has the aftermarket wheels on it I guarantee you 100% those aftermarket wheels have damaged lower suspension as well as your brakes now if you're subscribed to my videos and you watch some of the earlier ones we just did the lower control arms that connect to the cradle and run out to the hub carrier those are just going to wear out they wear out a lot on these cars you're gonna have to replace those and if you do it yourself you can do it for a couple of thousand dollars if you take it to Rolls Royce it's gonna cost you probably triple that but when you put those big wheels on the car they really destroy your suspension system you don't want to be having to replace these air shocks these struts that are in the front those can cost you as much as three four five thousand dollars depending on what has to be done and what's needed so take my advice on those things also consider if you're going to get a car that's 15 years old even if it doesn't have a lot of miles you may end up having to do a lot of engine accessory replacement the rolls-royce has two alternators each 180 amps one they're both made by Bosch one up above the other and the top ones about $2,000 the bottom ones about $1,000 if you do the work yourself though like we did we got the lower alternator for only 500 bucks and we did it in an afternoon it wasn't that hard to do you may end up replacing the water pump and one an issue with these cars which is common with a lot of other cars like the DeLorean on the back side of the water pump there's a pipe that runs under the intake through the engine that pipe can sometimes fail and leak water into the center of the engine cavity also known as the valley of death for those of you who work on cars you have to pull the intake in order to replace that pipe now used to be a full engine out job to fix it but now some guys have come up with a split pipe system that go in and and fit together and it's much much cheaper and much easier to do but it's still a huge pain in the ass so one of the things that you want to consider if you're gonna buy one of these cars you need to have some money in reserve maybe between five and ten thousand dollars that you're willing to put into the car for engine accessory upgrades and repairs for things like you know starters water pumps alternators miscellaneous oil leaks hoses and belts you're probably going to need to replace all your hoses and belts by this time because there's a lot of heat going on under here so these are things that you really want to consider also doing suspension this car being at 75,000 miles when I got it it needed the brakes done now if I had taken it to the rolls-royce dealer this might have cost me over five thousand dollars I don't know probably more but we bought the rotors from a place called Scuderia out of the UK and I think I paid something like 1200 bucks or something for the set of rotors and then the pads are another couple of hundred dollars we did it in a few hours it was a really easy job but you're also probably gonna have to replace all of your little sensors and that go on the brake pads those are about thirty bucks apiece so those are some costs that you may want to consider so these are just a few things that you're gonna want to put into the kitty when you're buying one of these cars and have available to repair let's talk about some other costs of ownership insurance for instance it is really important that you ensure the car and insure it well whereas the drivetrain on this car is a BMW 760li series that's great because you can get parts for the engine and the entire engine itself pretty reasonable it's very reliable and you can work on it yourself or get somebody else to work on it however the body panels to the car and this rolls-royce specific parts well those things are really expensive let me give you some examples the hood ornament for the car is about four thousand dollars the grill about twenty thousand dollars each door about twelve thousand dollars right fender about thirteen thousand dollars so when you have a collision it's very expensive now I recently dealt with this for my subscribers who have been watching I had a guy hit me on this side and kind of t-boned these two doors and I've been arguing with Allstate his insurance company for the last two months and they finally decided to work with me but the deal was when I took it to rolls-royce for the estimate they told me that it was going to be forty seven thousand dollars to replace both doors do all the labor repaint the car and rewrap the car so there was a lot of factors there so I'm paying around three thousand dollars a year for State Farm full coverage with a one thousand dollar deductible valuing the car at about a hundred thousand dollars this is something that is absolutely crucial you want to have the best coverage and also uninsured motorist and every other option if you can't afford to pay for the extra insurance don't get the car because the tiniest little fender bender will total your car if this car had been hit in the back anytime a rolls-royce phantom or goes to Wraith this hit in the back there's no replacing any of this body panel this is all one solid piece and it will it immediately total the car if there is a little dent anywhere in the bending of the frame now if you get something in the front that can be fixed really easy and the doors can be replaced but once any of this part is buckled do not buy a salvage rolls-royce that hit was hit in the back or the side quarter panels doors are easily replaced front end is easily replaced but anything back here other than the deck lid or the boot or trunk whatever you want to call it don't even go near it stay far away now you can find great deals on these cars that are listed as salvage because quite frankly with just a single dent in the door Allstate was ready to salvage and total this vehicle and pay me at they wanted to pay me out I think seventy six thousand dollars and I refuse payment I said I wanted much more than that but anyway we'll get into that in another video but the point is is you must have rock-solid insurance on the car if you're not willing to do that you're gonna be in big trouble if anything happens let's talk about some other considerations that you probably wouldn't even think about washing the car you got to keep this thing clean you can't go out on the town with the dirty filthy rolls-royce and you can't drive this thing through a drive-through car wash maybe if it's one of the touchless washes that doesn't have the rails I would consider that and that would be okay but those are hard to find and maybe a hand wash is perfectly fine that's usually what I do but never ever through a mechanical wash never ever ever you got to keep the car clean you got to either do it yourself you're gonna hire someone because you have a responsibility as a rolls-royce owner to represent you can't be a fake it to you make it you got to be the real deal you need to dress accordingly you need to take it to the right places you know you know take this thing to Taco Bell and leave it out in the parking lot don't take it to what I took it to Walmart because I stopped to pick up my stuff and and I found footprints on the hood of the car someone jumped up on top of the car and there was to converse prints right in the middle of the hood where they were taking pictures it's probably in a rap video right now and this is why I have dash cams I have dash cams in the front in the back and on the inside so I can monitor the valet while he's in the car monitor anybody taking selfies out here with the hood ornament and monitor anybody in the back this is why the hood ornament has been rigged a lot of people have seen this they know this but if you try to grab the hood ornament it'll this it sucks itself in right so that's a protection because they know that people want to steal this $4,000 hood ornament another thing you need to consider is valet parking and tipping one of the great things about having a rolls-royce that is different when when people tell me said well for the same amount of money you could go buy a brand-new Mercedes or Alexis or this or that but there is nothing and I do mean nothing short of a another equivalent car like a Bentley or maybe a Lamborghini or something that gives you the type of respect that you get when you pull up in a Rolls Royce Phantom even one that's 15 years old because the great thing is people don't realize what year it is and we're gonna talk about that in just a second but one of the great things about the car is when I pull up to the valet at the Neiman Marcus mall or or when I go to a restaurant they don't park the car out in the garage they put it right there in front by the valet stand and let you keep your key they don't even drive it they put it right up front you don't have to wait for it all right so I pulled up to Neiman Marcus cuz I wanted to go shopping valet cart there it said $8 the guy says here put it right here he moved a g-wagon so he could put this here in the front right g-wagen oh everybody's all excited about the g-wagen the rap stars g-wagen got put in the garage and video bob's rolls-royce was put in the front at the valet the fee was $8 I gave the guy 20 he said thank you sir and and then he got he's would you like a bottle of water I have one here in my cooler no thanks I'm fine but that's the treatment that you get when you driving a Rolls Royce family that's one of the reasons that's one of the benefits of buying the car but you have a responsibility as a owner to tip a little bit more be a little bit more friendly because everyone's looking at you everyone's taking a picture everyone's noticing you and if that's not what you want this is not the car for you go get a gold Lexus no one will notice you at all that's what you want if you want to be noticed if you want to be appreciated if you want to be treated with respect this is the car that you buy let's talk about something I touched on a little bit ago let's talk about depreciation if you're buying this car at the bottom of its depreciation where if the original owner maybe paid three hundred fifty four hundred thousand dollars for the car and now you're getting it for fifteen twenty percent of its value it's not going to go down too much further than that I think the bottom of the market for these is 10% of the you which would be about 35 to 40 thousand dollars and I just don't see them getting that low anytime soon I think eventually they will start to appreciate and go back up before that happens but here's the real value of the phantom the body style doesn't change that much there are certain things that you can buy that are very timeless my rolex submariner it's a two-tone blackface 16 6 13 I bought used in 2004 it's a 1990 model even in 2004 it still looked modern and still and today in 2019 it still looks modern I can walk into one of the major jewelry stores and they'll have this exact same watch on sale for 1215 thousand dollars and the only real difference is a few things they change with the clasp and the end links and things like that but the average person unless they break out a loop and start looking at it doesn't know whether or not I bought this watch yesterday or 30 years ago because that's just how all of the items are built so same thing with one of my favorite examples is the Colt 1911 pistol it's called the 1911 because it was made in the year 1911 and you could still go to the gun store down to the sporting goods store and buy a brand-new Colt 1911 right now for 1,500 bucks and it still looks pretty much the same as it did a hundred years ago so all that's changed on the rolls-royce phantom over the last 15 years is they rounded off the grill a little bit they changed the round headlights to some oblong ones they've they made a few subtle changes but the average gold digger in a miniskirt does not know the year of your car she's probably gonna call it a Bentley or a Lamborghini or what all she knows is it's awesome and expensive and they literally want to leap in your car now I'm a happily married man and I have no interest in gold diggin short skirt chick but let me tell you they come out of the woodwork when I pull up in this car I had a car full of girls pull up next to me wave their phones out the window and yell to me give me your number we will I'm not going to say what they said they would do but they offered to do the nicest thing you can do for a man for free they just wanted to be in the back of the car so you know this happens to me on a daily basis and I've learned to it's really hard to train yourself to turn down fellatio on a daily basis but that's basically what happens when you own one of these cars so my wife is is grateful that I'm loyal to her she's beautiful so sorry if that was crude sorry if that was rude sorry if that was arrogant egotistical or sexist or any of those things but this is just the reality folks that there are women out there that see a guy like this in the car just like all those gold digger videos that you watch and they used some hey this guy's a millionaire and I want I want to be with him even for a minute I just want to see what it's like to sit in the back of that car which brings us to another value added option this car I want to add to our fleet of specialty cars if you wanted to rent a car like this let me give you some ideas of what it cost now I'm not talking about driving the car although that is available I've seen the car listed in LA on Turo for as much as $1,500 a day but if you were to hire one of these for a wedding or something you would pay 350 dollars an hour for chauffer service with a two-hour minimum you would pay 500 dollars to be picked up and dropped off in this car like a average uber airport to hotel or something like that and those are the kind of fees that you could charge driving people around in the car if you were running a livery service now I'm not suggesting you do that I don't know what state city rules you're in but just to give you an example that's the value of this car even 15 years old so I don't think that there's much of a better investment than you can make in a car by the way this cars already appreciated since I bought it I probably got you know I paid 65 for it I probably put another ten into it or whatever I've already been offered 85 and 90 for this car I think I could probably sell this car right now for $100,000 and that's before I make the other additions that I'm going to make to it because here's another thing I wanted to talk about with the cars no two rolls-royce's are alike unless an owner bespoke ordered two of them alike but rolls-royce doesn't just build these cars and put them out for sale each one is ordered by a dealer or a buyer there each bespoke and they're all different all of the colors are different all of the interiors are different only the options are different you might find one that's got a refrigerator for champagne bottles in the back or like mine with a starlight headliner heads wool carpets or they might have a rabbit fur carpets the veneers could be any combination of colors you can call it brill's Royce and bring them a tree from your property and they will veneer your - with the tree that you brought them the leather can be any color the you know all of those things can be different you can have privacy powered curtains powered footrests massagers reclining seats I mean there is no limit to the things that you can get I mean this hood ornament they come in silver they come in gold they come in crystal with backlighting you can spend over twenty thousand dollars on just your hood ornament you could spend over a hundred thousand dollars on the artwork that's above the glove compartment so you'll never find two of these exactly alike and this was one of the arguments I made with the Allstate Insurance when we were trying to value the car because I said look you know you you can't just look on eBay and look at another Rolls they're all different they all have different wheels they all have different interiors they're all unique so you need to find the one that suits your taste and like I said some of them have the rear video entertainment system the backup cameras or the CD changers DVD changers there's just so many different options but the new Phantom 8 is a completely renewed car has so many new technological options in it but it's six hundred thousand dollars by the time you get it out the door the tags in touch whatever so if you've got a budget of around a hundred thousand dollars you can purchase one of these cars but you want to have some more money tucked away for maybe up to ten to twenty thousand dollars and upgrades and repairs and things that you might have to do and plan on spending a cost of ownership of at least five to ten thousand dollars a year in insurance maintenance fuel and all those different kinds of things so I hope that that answers some of your questions and what it's like to really own one of these cars and drive it every day well I hope that answered some of your questions about the rolls-royce phantom and what it's like to own one and if you're interested in more video about the rolls-royce and other exotic vehicles please give this video a like and please subscribe and make sure to turn on your notifications sometimes I do live videos and whatnot and you don't want to miss out on any of them so thanks
