hey brother okay so we all know Mr P Sherman 42 Wallaby Way Sydney aka the dentist from Finding Nemo and how much he loves his niece Darla he seems like an okay guy a little smarmy and kind of arrogant I mean he literally has a picture of himself accepting an award in his office like just just display the award itself dude frankly though I'm sure how he won that award though I mean opening with the Gator Glidden drill I think we all know that the tool you were really looking for was the carbide burr drill not to mention the fact that even though peach confirms that the rubber dam and clamp have been installed they clearly were not but whatever I guess I'll just hand out the once prestigious Australian golden tooth award to any gum jockey these days but honestly that's not the tooth I have to pick with the dentist today I want to talk about the near impossibility or else extremely expensive methods he must have gone to to get Nemo from the reef to his tank okay so if you are familiar with our family in real life at all you will undoubtedly know that my brother Ben you've seen him doesn't wear glasses has a beard slightly less good-looking and my dad are super into saltwater aquariums and as such in addition to running this YouTube channel Ben also owns a saltwater reef aquarium company and has been obsessed with aquariums for as long as I can remember even though I just keep trying to forget it to give you an idea of this mania in 2009 back when Ben was a freshman in college he won't strap down a rare picasso clownfish named so because instead of stripes it's got splotches and everyone knows splotches are better than stripes just ask anyone this involve negotiating it with the guy selling it in an online fish forum and getting the price down to a mere $200 that's two zero zero fish about this big plus travel which was from Radford Virginia to Fayetteville North Carolina and back roughly five hundred miles we did the math and in 2009 when gas was about three dollars a gallon that means that Ben spent approximately 71 dollars on gas plus three dollars for a Red Bull and two dollars on a bag of Andy caps hot fries making the grand total for this purchase and absurd math two hundred and seventy six dollars for a fish fish fridge which has made all the more ridiculous when you consider that V clownfish is probably the most common and least expensive marine fish you can buy at about fourteen dollars but as absurd as that might sound it is not even close to as absurd as the dentist in Finding Nemo here's the situation we find ourselves in some twenty five minutes into the movie using a Finding Nemo mug today just for the occasion Nemo has his first day of school and it goes pretty typical he fights with his overprotective father he sing some songs he cites some Jakarta medics had a bacterial struggle it excited bacteria together he touches a butt and then gets captured by a dentist and isn't seen for some time in the meantime Marlin meets Dory beau them meet and escape the sharks they blow up the balloons there's that hilarious fart joke nice and then we're back to Nemo now I'm not reciting all this to insult your intelligence I'm sure much like me you have memorized every moment of finding Nemo but I bring this up because the unexpectedly important Bart joke shows us the time of day outside which is night later the same day Nemo was taken we see Nemo arrived at the dentist's office and to meet the tank gang the following morning so roughly 24 hours since he's been taken from the reef which is all fine and good but my question is how if you're not familiar with these sides of the Great Barrier Reef or a Nemo and Marlin or from let me just tell you that it big like it takes up nearly half the coast of Australia big which if you didn't know Australia is wider than the moon so if you think about it the Great Barrier Reef is really like half the size of the moon as long as you don't think about it for much longer than the end of the sentence the reef runs from the northeast tip of the continent down to roughly the city of Buda burg and yet despite its vast size it is still super far away from a Sydney where the dentist lives according to google maps to a drive from Gunda burg to sydney would take you roughly 14 hours and 52 minutes and is over 1,200 kilometres which is roughly 800 miles sure you could fly there in just under three hours but we know that the dentist is not flying or driving he's booting and not boding and what I might call a super fast boat either I mean this is a 23 to 25 foot single prop centre console not to mention he's not exactly cutting any distance by traveling by water like sometimes that's great because you can cut right through something instead of having to go around on land but Australia is not so forgiving in this case this particular stretch will have you traveling roughly 25% of the entire outwardly curved eastern shoreline of Australia I don't know the exact distance or we're on the reef the dentist collected Nemo from but to give him the best possible odds let's say that he collected him from the southernmost tip of the reef I mean me after all were at the drop-off draw it's likely even longer but I'm going to generously say it's at least 850 miles so our question is is it possible to travel 850 miles at sea in 24 hours on a single prop center-console to get your newly captured clownfish in to your fish tank and I have to tell you figuring it out was kind of tricky because for one thing figuring out a good average miles per hour a boat can travel is a little bit trickier than it is with a car things like water choppiness and wind and the weight of the passengers all play a major role in determining that on a boat plus different boats have different tank sizes and different propellers and I'm fairly certain that the one the dentist is using is a fictionalised model made up by Pixar so yes there's room for a wide margin of error in this scenario especially over the course of eight hundred and fifty miles that said I'm still pretty happy with most of our results here and I hope you'll forgive any generalizations we had to make first we had to determine these size of his gas tank and on a boat his size it turns out they range from anywhere 75 to 125 gallons so we decided to just shoot it down the middle and say a hundred next we went searching for some comparable real-life boats to determine the maximum miles per hour this boat might be able to achieve with a single prop and we found this the cobia 237 center console the cobia boasts 24.5 miles per hours on the GPS at 6.9 gallons per hour which translates to 3.5 4 miles per gallon three and a half miles a gallon now that's some people Academy I know that doesn't sound great but if you compare it to a cruise ship it's actually amazing because they know how far a single gallon of gas will push a cruise ship it's three weight or it feet anyway I know the cobia isn't the exact model that dentist has but if anything I think it's a little bit nicer so again these figures are generous and in his favor but will they be generous enough well traveling at twenty four point five miles an hour with 850 miles to go means that the voyage alone would take him thirty four hours and 41 minutes so absolutely no he could not make this journey there's just no way he could have gotten back to his office the next morning even if you wanted to go out of your way to make this work and say that he caught Nemo and say 6:00 a.m. and went straight back to the dentist office to start working on the prime minister's teeth in the late afternoon that would be 4 p.m. and it would still mean he spent 68 hours a minimum at sea because he had to get out there too and then came straight to the office and began drilling people's teeth Franklin it's no wonder he grabbed the wrong drill but here's the thing even the 34 hours still is impossible because he wouldn't have enough fuel in the tank to make it in one shot he'd have to stop at least twice to refuel or else be hauling an additional 200 downes of fuel on board which would add so much weight I don't think he'd be getting the maximum fuel economy out of his boat but ok ok let's say just for the sake of it Nemo is arriving in the tank not one but two days later the dentist would still be a madman who had barely slept and been at sea for 3 days but at least it would be possible the question then is how much would it have cost him to acquire Nemo well as we just establish it would take at least two full gas things to get all the way out there it's a 1,700 mile journey and it adds up to about 4.8 full tanks of gas which is 480 gallons so how much does 480 gallons of a gas cost in Australia in 2003 when the movie takes place well first off they use leaders and not gallons so let's convert that over 1 gallon is 3.5 4 liters so math math math that's 1814 liters and in 2003 in Australia a liter of gas would have cost you what seems like an affordable 80 cents math math that comes out to 1415 dollars in gas alone not counting the amount of red I'm prize he must have been packing which I have to say I think we can all agree what had at least had a 17 minimum dollars to the total honestly been when you consider what the dentist spent that sounds like you had quite a deal on your fish although you're both still crazy but the dentist in particular seems like he's going out of his way to be crazy about this fish I mean as you said earlier clownfish are among the most common marine animals available to the public and the dentist obviously has a no issue just buying fish from Bob's fish Mart palace really it's maybe more alarming that he's made it this far into the hobby without owning a clownfish or dad or maybe it's not surprising considering he doesn't seem very good at this hobby like yeah at all see while it's adorable in the movie for him to have a volcano and a bunch of artificial plants that's not really how saltwater aquariums work normally they're filled with corals and something called live rock which is essential to your fish's survival and your average saltwater aquarium would also require way more maintenance than this very basic hang on back filter system he's got going and on top of all that it is even unclear whether or not the dentist understands the difference between fresh and salt water or just understands what money is at all because we see last year that he was going to give Darla chuckles the goldfish which the entire tank gang seemed to know which is weird because he was a goldfish and could not survive in salt water like the Pepperidge Farm version would do better in that tank than chuckles chuckles would not be able to breathe Darla would be the least of his concerns on the flip side chuckles oh Lord across the dentist about 25 cents so if you do a little math there Darla nets one thousand four hundred and fifty dollars and seventy five cents plus the cost of Red Bull and hot fries in gift value from the ages of seven to eight it's pretty good so there you go a band Finding Nemo basically impossible but my question for you and everyone else is what is the craziest purchase you've ever made for a hobby let me know in the Tao section down below quick thank you to everyone who's already filled out the super Carl and brother survey it's still open if you haven't yet there's a link in the description we really appreciate it it helps us determine what kind of content you guys would like to see the most what kind of meetups and where we should do them and all sorts of other good stuff even if you've already taken it last year so it really helps if you just do it every single year so we have the most fresh data thanks as always for watching today's video please leave a like comment if you haven't already and subscribe so you don't miss any future pics our action from us if you want to see how
