in their first leg tie against Atletico Madrid anovich missed a big chance in the 62nd minute and while at first glance it may seem as if it was a simple link up Play Between the strikers the true beauty of this move can be seen from its origin firstly the attack starts in a 442 a slightly different structure compared to their standard 352 formation but what's more interesting is that these three midfielders are actually the three center backs with Barella and chogo role playing as the Defenders this is just one of the countless rotations in have used this season but to understand why these rotations are so effective we need to understand how inagi sees the game Let's Take a Look Welcome Back to Football meta so Simone nagi's philosophy is proving to be one of the most effective in Europe and in are very quickly running away with a Ser title not only are they winning games but they're doing so in style as it stands in have the joint best attack in Europe whilst also having the best defensive record to understand why they're quickly becoming one of the most entertaining teams let's take a look at inagi principles in's base formation is the 352 a shape that is usually seen when they reset their attacks but throughout the game they will shift constantly into other formations from goal kicks we instantly see this shift in shape with the wing back DeMarco starting as the fullback and the three Defenders shifting to create a back four buildup structure this allows the right wing back in either Damian or dumre to gain ground on the right pinning the opposition's defender in place this deep line of five players three midfielders and three players on the defensive line instantly gives into a lot of options and it usually means the opposition will need to push high up the pitch to cover all the players and this is the space they want to instantly exploit from goal kicks if there space they can look for a central ball into Chanel Ogo who then has support to Bounce It Off the strikers and shift it out wide but the majority of the time the opposition will close off this Central route which is where the Deep line across the back comes into play as it allows them to move it out wide and down the line either for the wing back or one of the midfielders shifting over here are two examples of this progression the first is through these Central routes against Juventus we see inter's back four of the three center backs and the wing back with the other Wing back up on the right given this deep line of players and the four players further up close to the defensive line it leaves chanal logu in space to receive the ball as Juventus can't commit any more players forward Juventus then tried to squeeze the pitch but inevitably open up route into Darian out wide the second example is from their match against Atletico in this case it was harder for in to move down the center given atletico's man-to-man pressing structure but this freed up space on the flank as atletico's Wing back pushed up to close DeMarco this meant in had space in behind the wing back to create an overload and an excellent dummy opened up the pitch for them to push forward and we can see how the opposite Wing back was ready once again to attack in behind this ability to break the first line means a lot of teams will wait in a compact block and Inter can quickly gain control of the pitch and it's from this position where we can start to notice the true Brilliance of inagi philosophy the first thing to notice is where they want to keep the ball we can understand this by looking at their field TI A team's field TI is their share of possession but only when considering touches in the final third an inter's value of 56.7 is a telling sign of their tactics if we compare this to the top three teams in each of Europe's top five leagues in would be bottom of this list what this shows is that teams like man city for example hold on to the ball in these areas looking for players between the lines and suffocating the opposition in their own box before moving it out wide for crosses or cutbacks into the final third and generally speaking these are the spaces they look to exploit in on the other hand while they still control possession they do so from a deeper position as their main idea is not necessarily to find players between the lines but they want to create space behind the defensive line for them to run into this is also why they dominate in statistics like through balls and Crosses as a lot of their chances are created from deeper positions where they can then cross the board early Chanel logu is thriving in his transformation into a deep lineing playmaker as from this position further back he can use his passing range to pick out runs in behind as into attack forward in numbers a quick reminder that all these stats are only available on the x value platform if you want to know even more about in's dominance then make sure to check it out with of the most dangerous elements of this team are the runs from Deep positions the two wide center backs in bastoni and pavad will very frequently join the attack for example as possession shifts out wide into the wing back it's very common to see Baston quickly running forward to attack this space out wide and it helps understand how after a period of prolonged possession it's not too difficult to imagine how you could end up with all your center backs in Midfield much like the clip from the start of the video while the fullbacks are free to push forward it's the wing backs that create the vast majority of danger when moving forward specifically the left wing back DeMarco has been outstanding this season with three goals and six assists already surpassing his Tally from his previous two seasons one way inter look to move the ball to him is by dragging the opposition over to one side before very quickly switching play to the left where DeMarco can use his Pace to attack the space and deliver an early cross into the box his ability to find space is also down to the fact that unlike Darian or dumre on the right dearco will start from a deeper position freeing the space and unexpectedly attacking forward when his marker loses track of him a move from the 48th minute against Atletico highlights this ability of his to attack when the opposition aren't ready DeMarco helps the team move the ball to the right flank and as Atletico shift over to cover the Italian Wing back starts his run quickly outpacing his marker and finding space to attack this move also highlights another fundamental part of inagi style and that is to cross the ball early when there is still space time and time again in will cross the ball before they reach the box as this type of delivery is much harder for the defender to stop as they're still running backwards towards the goal compared to delivery from a deeper position where the defenses had time to get into position now an analysis of in's attacking shap wouldn't be complete without understanding the excellent linkup play of the two Strikers laara Martinez is the League's top scorer while teram has been an outstanding signing for inter with 10 goals and seven assists their roles complement each other perfectly Martinez is used in a slightly more active position when the team starts the attack usually dropping deep and linking up Play Between the Lines from this position he usually looks to lay it off before instantly attacking the box to meet the cross on the other hand turam is used as more of a Target man pushing the defensive line back and attacking the space in the channels which is also why he has an impressive amount of assists as in can often find him making runs in the channel before knocking it back across the box if in look for long balls he is often the Target and will knock it down into the path of any of the players between the lines essentially teram is used to create space between the lines and attack behind the defense while Martinez is used to occupy the space and Link the team's attack their first goal against salana is a perfect example of this type of linkup play between the two players s plays a long ball into tram who finds Martinez on the overlap Martinez lays it off into tram out wide who delivers an early cross into Martinez attacking the box so in possession inagi is heavily riing on creating chances early whether it's with direct attacks in behind or with a number of different players pushing forward there's a reason why inter have been so dominant in attack this season however their attack is only half the story and a big reason behind their success is also their defensive shape defensively in have come a long way from their counterattacking days under con and their 352 is much more aggressive when out of possession in the area back three formations are extremely popular and against these in will match up man for man the wing backs will push forward and Barella is the player to pick up the extra Center back with one of the Defenders picking up the extra player in Midfield here's an example of this structure against Atletico who also played in a 352 we see the wing back high up the pit with Griezmann being covered by the center back and all the players in attack being covered against back four formations the 352 also works extremely well against fantina for example the strikers pushed up against the center backs with the wing backs covering the fullbacks leaving the rest of the team in a 1 V one this pressure that they're able to put on single players means inter have been extremely difficult to break down often forcing long balls and regaining possession between the lines as the opposition gained ground the wing backs will drop to form a back five reverting to a 532 shape and completely closing off the center of the pitch the few goals they have conceded from open play this season have largely come from counterattacking situations as the aggressive nature of the Midfield and Wing backs does leave Central gaps that the opposition can exploit what I love about in and inagi from this season is how they've been able to transform a formation that is known for its defensive solidity into one of the most aggressive offensive formations in Europe but the question I want to ask you is this do you think two Striker systems will become more popular over the next few seasons leave your thoughts in the comments down below if you enjoyed this video then you should definitely check out this video on the fullback the role of the fullback has changed drastically over the past few seasons so if you want to know more about how managers are exploiting this role then definitely check out this video as always if you enjoyed this
