hello everyone so as you can tell i'm going to be showing you guys my clay pin process in this video because you know sometimes people want to make their own designs or maybe you have your own store that you're wanting to add clay pins to starting off i use the original sculpey polymer clay just plain sculpey clay i don't use any colors because i prefer to paint over it starting off with any polymer clay you want to make sure that you are massaging it and working it before you start making your pins because out of the box it is kind of stiff and difficult to work with so you just want to keep massaging it for about five minutes until it's nice and soft [Music] and then you want to start rolling it out i used to use a bunch of random stuff to roll out my polymer clay for a long time but this little rolling pin is from the sculpey brand and it's meant for polymer clay and it just makes the process a lot easier and a lot faster i like to roll it out to about between eighth of an inch to a quarter of an inch of thickness that's really up to preference but you don't want to make them too thin or too thick because you don't want to make them flimsy or too heavy as a pin [Music] there [Music] so now that i've got my desired thickness i can start shaping the clay now i bought this cookie cutting set from amazon because having these shapes really helps keep consistent how much clay i'm using for each pin and it helps with the consistency of the shape too so you'll see in a minute that i don't necessarily make circle clay pins having that circle shape makes it much easier to create the shapes that i want and again it just helps keep more consistent how much clay i'm using for each pin [Music] do [Music] so now that i have cut out some of the circles i am shaping them right now into a little frog shape so i have these tools that i bought off of amazon the little polymer clay tool set you can find so many on there i did recently buy those because for a while i was literally just using my fingers and that works perfectly fine but i find that these make the process again a little bit faster a little bit easier so i like to use every part of a little tool so the little silicone part at the top works for softening there's a little dotting tool on the other side and i even use like the little handle part to create the shape and i find that smoothing it out with my fingers is easiest [Music] foreign [Music] do [Music] do so now that we have all of our shapes we can start baking the clay pins now you want to be sure to preheat your oven to 275 degrees fahrenheit and bake them for about 13 minutes so the package says 15 minutes i do 13 minutes but you want to make sure to keep checking up on those pins because you don't want them to burn i like to lay down a little piece of parchment paper underneath the pins so they don't stick at all to your pan or ruin it in case they burn now once they're baked they're going to be super hot and they took quite a while to cool off so i like to take them off of the pan so they cool off a little bit faster and please be careful to not burn yourself because as you can see they are very very hot so after at least an hour of cooling i am starting sanding so i used to use sandpaper but it started wearing away at the skin of my fingers and my nails and it just took a lot longer so i bought this little jewelry sander type thing i got this cashew one because it's much cheaper it's like an off-brand dremel from amazon you can just look up like sanding tool for jewelry and you'll find a bunch and they're pretty inexpensive and they come with a lot of different attachments to sand with i know people use dremels like i said but obviously those are a little bit more expensive so if you're someone that makes a lot of stuff with polymer clay then you can go ahead and invest in one of those but this has cut down my sanding time a bunch and while you're sanding you want to make sure to be wearing some type of face and nose covering because this does create a lot of little fine dust and you do not want to be inhaling that in and you want to make sure to do proper clean up afterwards as well [Music] so now that our pins are nice and smoothed out we can start painting and this is my favorite part but it is also the most time consuming part this part takes about two days for me because there are so many layers of paint that you have to let dry i personally use the whole bane brand acrylic gouache you want to make sure to use acrylic gouache because so gouache in itself is a mixture of like acrylic and watercolor paint so it has the thickness and opacity of acrylic paint but with gouache you can reactivate it and kind of thin it out to give it that watercolor effect so if you got if you get normal gouache paint it'll just continuously be reactivated and it'll be really easy to be muddy and you won't be able to layer different colors on top of each other so if you get acrylic gouache once it dries down it will not move it will not be reactivated so it makes it much easier to work with and now you can enjoy a few clips of some painting time lapses which i know i really like watching [Music] so [Music] so [Music] so now it is time to paint the details and i make most of the details on my clay pins with posca paint markers so these markers dry down after you use them and they just work really well because they have super fine tips that can allow you to create those details and it's much easier to rather than using a brush but you can definitely use that acrylic gouache and a brush i do use it for some of the details but for most of them i do prefer using these postcard markers [Music] hmm [Music] hmm [Music] [Music] [Music] hmm [Music] uh so now all of my pens are nice and finished painting so now it is time to glue the pin backings and coat them in uv resin so i am using this bob smith glue and the reason that i use this glue is because it's odorless i'm very sensitive to fumes and odors the first time i started working with polymer clay i tried using i think it's like epoxy 6000 or something which is the most common glue that people use with small crafts like this but the odor was extremely strong and it smelled in my room for days so i like using this odorless glue and you can find pin backings on amazon it's super easy you can just search up pen backings and they have gold and silver in different types i like using the butterfly clutch ones and i prefer the gold colored ones so this glue you don't even have to really squeeze it because of the tip that it has you just kind of tap it onto the pin backing and the bottle says to press both surfaces together for about 10 seconds and you should be good to go and now as you can see some of your pins if they're a little bit bigger or if the shape is like longer not as round you're going to want to use two pins because you don't want them to be sliding around when they are on something [Music] uh [Music] hmm [Music] so now we have all the pin backings glued onto our pins and i like doing the pin backing before the uv resin because i use these little half wine corkscrew things that i cut up to stabilize them and to be able to do the resin without them sticking anywhere because if you just lay them flat on a surface and put resin on them they will stick to that surface and you will ruin your surface and your clay pin so it's helpful to stab them into these little corks and because once i do the back side with the uv resin having the resin on there to secure the pin backing makes it just a lot more sturdy and secure so i personally use these brushes to apply my uv resin because i find that it's the way that i get the most smoothest application and the fastest application it's definitely not the most sustainable way but i have not found any other way to do it some people say to keep your brush in an alcohol jar in between like applications so it doesn't harden and you don't waste it but that personally has not worked for me i'm not sure why i have tried keeping it in alcohol and like rinsing it out on alcohol and it just the resin just never comes out i've tried using little toothpicks and such and it just doesn't work it doesn't give the same finish so that's how i do it i am still looking for a way to apply uv resin i've also found that applying it directly from the bottle is the best way to not waste any uv resin so i used to pour it into like a little silicone cup and then grab it from there with the brush but i find that i waste so much resin doing that because it eventually starts to like harden up and it gets all gloppy so it's best to just squirt the amount that you need onto the clay pen and once you get it onto the clay pin you want to make sure that you start working it immediately especially if you work in an area next to a window or where there's a lot of sunlight because it will start to harden pretty quickly now i use this uv lamp from amazon i feel like it's the one that most people use because it's fairly big and it has a tray that slides out now with the settings on this one i used the 180 seconds setting timer thing for my clay pins and i run them about five times per side just to make sure it's fully fully cooked through and whenever you take them out you just want to make sure to touch them and make sure that the uv resin is fully dry before you take them out if it's a little bit tacky it's okay but if you are like able to get some uv resin off of the clay pan you definitely want to make sure to run it through a few more times in the uv lamp before taking it out so now that it is fully dry on that side i can do the back side and like i said it does really help to secure the clay backing and you want to make sure to get it on that part that touches the clay pin to really seal it in then you can just pop them back into the uv lamp and do about five more rounds do about five more rounds of that 180 seconds so it amounts to about like 15 minutes and that should be enough per side for the uv resin [Music] do do [Music] food [Music] hey [Music] so now that they're all coated in uv resin i like to put them out in the sun on a window and leave them there for the rest of the day just to get rid of that extra tackiness because they do kind of come out a little bit [Music] tacky now if you are looking to sell these on your store it is time to create your backing card so i make my own backing cards but you can order them from a website or a company so i do them on procreate and i like to create a 2x3 inch canvas with about 600 dpi and then i just start drawing away and i create my backing card [Music] so [Music] hmm [Music] hmm once i have the design fully drawn i export it into photoshop on my ipad and i start with an 8 by 11 inch canvas because that's the size of a normal piece of paper and i start filling it up with the design and trying to maximize that piece of paper as much as i can the type of paper that i use is just a heavy i think it's like 150 pound cardstock just to have a little bit of a thicker paper to poke through and now i am just trimming and cutting out the little individual cards [Music] hmm now it is time to put the clay pin through the backing card i learned this trick from catnip illustrations you get a roll of washi tape and you put the backing card on it and then you get your clay pin and you make sure to poke through the center of the washi tape roll and it pokes through perfectly without bending the backing pin at all and then you get your little butterfly clutch and secure it and you are done with your clay pin so that is my process for how i make my own clay pins if you are wanting to make your own design go ahead i hope this was helpful and i hope this answered some questions and i will see you guys in next week's vlog [Music] you
