all right so uh this video is going to be one where we're going up to look at a 1967 Mustang for a viewer that contacted me and said that there's a view there's a car in your state that I want you to go look at because a guy wants a pretty good amount of money for it and so I want to be able to know that I'm getting a good deal this is something you can do if you've got a car that you're interested in and you want to pay a little bit of money for somebody to go out and take a look at it that's into cars like you are and knows what they're talking about and I guess I'm that guy in this situation you can have somebody go take a look at the car for you and say hey yeah this is go ahead and do this it's not a bad deal I don't like buying anything online from any place that I can't actually put eyeballs on it [Music] so Jackson and I he's with me today he's running the camera on me right now Jackson I heard talking earlier today and it struck me that we buy crap cars because when I talked to Jackson about what the total value of this car was he automatically went to it being a piece of junk for a big amount of money I'm not going to go into what the money is that's Changing Hands today but let's just say that it's a lot of money he automatically thought it was a piece of junk and it's not we're going to go look at a really fairly nice Mustang with a five-speed it's a running driving car got a good paint job on it it has a Fastback so it's it's going to be all that but it just kind of made me think we really buy a lot of crap because Jackson went to crap right away [Music] all right so we are now at the location with the car and my first flush on this car is it's a really nice vehicle I mean I'm looking at it the paint's in decent shape the guy who has a car now says it paints probably about 20 years old so and it's indicative of that I see little imperfections in the paint but there's not anything that's going to make me say no we don't want to do this um we've been talking to him a little bit off camera and I'm going to point out some things he's already talked about and mentioned anytime somebody's really forthcoming with what they know about the car I'm a little more comfortable with the Vine one of the things that I do like about this one is it's it's complete it's ready to rock and roll so we're going to start going in and kind of bearing down on a little bit some things that we're going to talk about that were already mentioned by the owner to the buyer on this car is there's a little bit of door rust on both sides and some of that's because of a repair Style if the paint is that old and it's 25 years old and it's starting to come up now that's good if this car was painted six months ago and you're starting to see door rust already coming up that means the pair repair was not a good repair my 72 Mach 1 is uh 20 some odd years old on the restoration and the paint's just absolutely falling off of it because of my at prep work now one way you can check this stuff is to just tap the paint with your fingernail unless you're like my twins and you don't have fingernails anymore because you bite your fingernails but you hear a difference in Pitch as we move into that area where the repair has been made no change in Pitch there except going down to the edge which is going to have a change in Pitch because of your pinch weld down here again 25 year old paint you're going to see some imperfections and one of the places is like here there's a little bit of a crack in the paint and there's a little bit of of lift this is one of your joints in the car so this is an area that could see some kind of cracking from age there is a uh a lead joint right here a lot of these cars will start to see some changes in paint in those areas so that's uh that's not to be unexpected the little bubbles here this is another joint area your joint on the fastbacks comes right in through here so this in again is an area where you can see some of that starting to happen with a paint job that's a little older on my 72 it's done the same thing the nice thing about quarter extension damage like this is it can be repaired you can take this to a shop and just have them pull that extension off and repaint this extension and get rid of that problem right there I know it looks like I drugged my sock from home and I did what's in the bottom of this sock is a little magnet that I got from over at a little hobby store local to our house what I can do with this in a sock I can put it on the paint job and try to pull it off if it pulls the sock you know you get decent metal underneath it and I'll show you that on the front here in just a second see how it pulls it up that's pretty good all the way down to the bottom this won't Mar the paint or anything this will be good the owner will have a problem with you doing this because you've got a soft material I think we're pretty good here nothing in these lower quarters see how it's pulling it up when I go that's good and you'll want to check inside these areas on a classic car you're probably going to have some issues with little specks of paint being taken out here because it's got a 351 Windsor that's bored out to 410 cubic inches I think it's got plenty of stones to do anything you need to do especially throw rocks in a paint job now we're gonna go down here and do that do that don't work over here where we know we've got an issue sticks there and it runs away from that corner pretty quickly almost falls off right there on top of the repair this repair on this side is probably a little bit better than the other one but it's in that corner and like I said I'll open the door up and take a look at it with a flashlight very light there not like you get here so the poles a little bit better and you don't want to randomly do that on the car if you're buying an automobile you'll want to randomly just take and pull the magnet off on different areas because there can be damage that that you don't know about it's hiding in some of these spots along the quarter panels too all right now the next thing I'm going to do is I'm going to have the current owner of the car come in here start it up and pull it out and what I'm going to be looking for is smoke coming out of the tailpipe and I'm also going to be looking for or listening for any noises out of the engine that are what I would call unsavory all right now one thing that is kind of disconcerting to me as a buyer and this is just a personal picky point is that the engine has been run in other words he brought the car over here today for us to take a look at it and you won't be able to hear the engine on a cold startup because if you're going to exhibit issues inside the engine uh Radley lower end or a knock or something that can go away and not be heard on a warm startup that you're going to hear on a cold start so this engine's been run and it's warm one thing we do know about that is it made it all the way over here from his house so that's that's kind of a plus I would like to have seen it Stone Cold startup but I'm gonna be okay with this for right now and especially if we can see what the oil pressure is on the engine when it is running [Music] [Music] all right now something like this this is actually a personal preference thing I don't particularly like having the speakers like this but it's not my choice um I wouldn't that would not be a plus or a minus to me that would be something I would probably try to get a new door put in there and do the speakers some other way but a lot of guys don't care and Jackson my guy running the camera today he said that's really cool if he likes it so it's all personal preference kind of what you run into with this kind of stuff it's cool that it's got a nice stereo system in it or nice enough to have the six by nines in the back door here so that means you get a stereo with the car and you don't have to listen to that engine but I'm probably not gonna listen to wisteria all right door test when the door opens if it drops that means you've got a hinge problem these hinges are in really nice shape now watch this the door shuts nice it's a little hard to shut but that's usually indicative of the seals that are on the door more than a badly aligned door the guy who did the body work on this did a nice job all the gaps are really good on it and really even I like that about the car it's really uh it's really got a nice feel to it on the passenger side driver side is for most of your trouble is going to be though if you're having a hinge Point problem no dropping the hinge shut on the door I hate to admit this but this one actually shut shuts better than my 67 did had problems with that door good shot baby this is a really nice engine bay very well done very neat it's not cluttered up like you see a lot of them it's uh it's got the 351 Windsor stealth intake Holley four barrel which is a great carburetor for this setup um all the stuff is where it's supposed to be battery tray everything looks to be in order in here there's no rust down here I can't look down inside these areas on the sides of the car at the frame rail areas and see anything that looks untoward um got a big front sway bar on it I don't see any real heavy leaks on the oil pan got aftermarket motor mounts on it with the urethane centers it has a rack and pinion on it I believe a Flaming River one of those now the clutch on this car is a standard z-bar type clutch that's not a bad thing or a good thing it's just a thing to note I also want to look and see what we've got going on in the back the next thing you want to do is you want to look at your VIN all right now what I'm doing is I'm looking at the floor pans on this thing these floor pans are almost always somewhat problematic um the frame rail on this one somebody's put a jack on that frame rail in the past and folded it up like a taco now the other side has some similar damage to it but it's not as bad as this one is this isn't going to affect performance or anything it's mostly a cosmetic issue I wouldn't worry about it if it were me if I really wanted to get stinky about it like I said I would go cut the floor and fix that other side not nearly as bad all right it's got a set of under Rod traction bars on it these are kind of neat too uh the underrides have been welded on which I prefer as long as you've got a good weld so I call these kind of a plus especially with the five speed and the 410 351 Windsor in this one now these two bolts you've got a inner bolt and a bolt coming from inside this is for the roll bar that's in the car it's a four point bar it helps it's it's going to help a little bit with chassis stiffness but because of where it's at you know the floor pan rather than on the torque box area it's not going to really be a good chassis stiffener but in a rollover situation it uh it will help a little all right now what you have here this is a 702c what is that that means this car is a 1967 built at the Metuchen plant in New Jersey and it's an O2 which is a Fastback anymore that can be a real issue there can be a car where you'll pick it up and you'll have instead of an O2 you'll have an 01 there which will mean that your Fastback that you're looking at is a cobbled together car it's not really a Fastback it's a hard top that somebody's going in and put a Fastback kit on is that a plus or a minus I have no idea it's just an is if I start looking at that then I start really wanting to Bear down and look at the body a little bit more but owing to what the owner on this car said it's a 25 year old paint job the paint job has all the earmarks of being an older paint job we know that it's not one where they've done a Fastback conversion the next thing I'm looking at is that c the C tells me that this car is a 289 which is good it's originally a 289 car somebody has gone in and put a 410 Windsor in it which this thing should Sparkle pretty nice when you take it down the road one thing I do notice that is something that a lot of people have done over the years on these is down here in the shock Tower area you'll see a rubber plug here the fact that somebody put a plug here again indicates that somebody gives a crap about this car that rubber plug is covering a hole so you can Grease the upper control arm bushings on the insides I prefer to see a 90 degree fitting on there that greases them out this way but the coals are here the reason I don't like having the holes down there is because that can induce cracking in the shock Towers which I do not see on this car what I'm looking for when I'm doing this is cracking around the bolts Ford put more reinforcing in in 1967 these look pretty decent from this altitude I don't see anything that makes me want to worry about they're being cracking down in there the back one's a little harder to see but I'm going to check it as well see anything that makes me want to holler so that's good let me go look at the other side we'll do that off camera all right this car has got an original early 60s Ford nine inch in it rear drum brakes not a big problem that again I actually like drum brakes on the street they tend to work a little bit better so that's I don't call that as a negative I call that as just it is what it is it's gonna be hard to get up underneath here and check for a pinion leak but I'll do that here in a second and see if there's any weep off the pinion uh you can tell us an earlier Ford nine inch because there is a neck down right there where my flashlight is shining the axle housing actually next down to go out to the axle ends so that's what that's all about looking at that that looks uh looks fine too I mean you know everything's everything's really checking out pretty nice on this car all right so now we've got the um traction bars here you'll notice that there is a shim in between the leaf and the rear axle on this car that's a good thing what that tells me is that somebody gave enough of a crap to go in here and try to get the pinion angle correct on this car when they did it you can also look in here and see that there is a sway bar in as well it's got a three-quarter inch rear sway bar one inch front so I like that as well um the dual exhaust system looks really nice on it it's in good shape it's probably got the original gas tank but if it's a southern car I'm not that worried about that rear frame rail sections look pretty good this is your rust point on a 60s Mustang right here in this corner you'll see that there's been some repair work done here and it's also missing the drain Point down here in the bottom corner it should be either here or back here a little bit I can't remember on the 67 Mustangs but there has been some repair work done right here not a bad repair I wouldn't I wouldn't suspect and it doesn't look like any of the problems leaked so to speak to the outside it's a good solid Southern car a little bit of damage right here nothing I would worry about the this lip has been pulled up probably had a tire problem at some point the outer part of these pans the rear pans and drop-offs looks really good from underneath again I wouldn't suspect any of this at all either well the tow hooks got bent sometimes in his past and the uh Mount points on this side don't have any weld on them so that tells me then that something happened to this this car and it's past to cause that side to get welded and that was probably a long long time ago it may have popped a spring and it boogered out that hole who knows but the other side is a little different than the passenger side nothing I'm going to call is is something would cause me to flag the car um truck drop-offs on this side look really good as well all right now you can see the metal plate now this is something the owner told us about he said that this car had had a patch put in the bottom of the passenger side rear section of the car here you can actually see the metal patch there and this is something you'd be looking for he's already disclosed it so it's not like he's trying to hide anything and I like that it makes me feel more comfortable on on a car like this but there is a patch there it's not actually the trunk drop off that would normally be there and that trunk drop off is available this was probably done back in the day when you just couldn't get that stuff and now you can trunk time all right whenever you're buying one of these kind of cars a classic of this nature you're going to want to Pop the trunk on it and you want to go try to get down into the corners if you can to see what's down in there and in there now on this car I can look immediately as I look to my left or my right and I can see that there is a line where somebody patched in a panel on it my flashlight so my camera guy doesn't go completely apoplectic here let me put my flashlight I'll show you what I'm talking about see that line that's running across the bottom part of that quarter panel there that is indicative of a repair and again this is something that the owner has already disclosed to us so I'm going to do this now I'm going to take and go to this side pull the carpet up so I can look at these now these are the original um trunk drop off this is called the trunk drop off these are the originals in this car because you can see the original spot welds here on the floor itself all the way up to here it wouldn't be unusual for this car to have a tail light panel put in it really can't tell that it's if it is or isn't now what I'm going to do is I'm going to take and move this out of the way gently it's just a cover board and I'm going to look right down into that corner so I was investigating before and you can see if you get over here a little bit there's a repair to the inner skin on this car right down in that corner again not that unusual on one of these cars it's a repair that I probably personally would have done a little differently but it's done and that was done probably a good while back put that back always return things to the waiting put back on this side We're not gonna be able to get the carpet up over here because of the spare is tied down oddly enough it has a spare you would be surprised at how many of these cars I've looked at in the past that have absolutely zero spare tire in them um no Jack no nothing you just get an open trunk back here with nothing in it another thing that you can look at to see if you have a repair for like a tail light panel being added you can look at this right here and see on that edge right there you can see a pick point where it was spot welded with a MIG welder around this perimeter here you can see that right there and that tells you that it's probably had a tail light panel put in it little details Chrome on the trunk latch just a nice touch a lot of people we have a car like this you can tell if it's a car that somebody's really giving a crap about you hear him heard me say that a couple of times here this is a car that somebody cared about and this is a car that somebody really loved when they were working on it because all the the nice details what I'm checking for here is Feathering on the outside edge of the Inside Edge of the tires to see if we've got any kind of wear here these tires feel like they're wearing pretty well but if this car is not driven much that can be a problem not going to be any good way for me to actually check the front end on this car I can lightly check it sitting here a little bit of Creek on the front end Not Unusual on a Mustang most of that that you're seeing is roll off the tire I think it's probably okay uh has KYB shocks on it all the way around pretty typical for one of these cars I'll go around now weirdly do the headlights work yes they do that's something you want to check out before you buy a car if you get a flickering headlight sitting like this you probably have an issue with grounds and things like that this one seems to be okay I'm going to check out my turn signals working not working working not working okay good turn signals that's good Now we move to the back and what I'm looking for in a case like this is a fluctuation in the passenger side turn signal while this one is running without the car idling that'll mean that it could mean something with a grounding in the car this one looks like it's doing fine there's no fluctuation of that light turn signal is working turn signals on a Mustang can be a real problem now the Mustang this is the end of the lead if this leg is going to have a problem with the lights and the turn signals it's going to be on this one over here we look pretty good the running lights are on it runs it's looking fine good turn signals now I'm going to test the brakes I'm gonna have to have Jackson tell me whether or not we got brake light good okay you got brick lights all the safeties are there and the car has disc brakes that's another Plus all right now I'm going to move to the interior all right now I'm going to look at the interior again this interior is a little bit older showing a little bit of wear but this is actually very cleanable and can be made to look nice again these doors are notorious for taking strikes and chips on the bottom Edge down here I put the cladded panel on mine that had the speakers in it just to keep that from being an issue because I didn't like hitting that door every time I got out so we'll play some of these also take a lot of strikes again all replaceable stuff and easy to do has an aftermarket stereo system in it this is a Jensen head unit that's fine for what this car is doing it's it's going to be a driver car the one thing we didn't check was the fog lights and I'll check those in just a second all right so it's got a five speed in it with an aftermarket shifter in here this is a stock style shift arm the the tangs don't do anything for reverse but it's nice because they put the original style shift ball on it with a five-speed shift imprint in it the boots starting to take damage which is not that unusual with these this is really an issue with those kind of these kind of setups um what I've typically done in the past with these is instead of using the square shift boot like this I'll use the early one from the 6566 it is a round hole or even the stock one for this one and put that on here and that seems to work pretty well you can get them to fit on there it's just a little harder Dash panel showing some wear around the ignition switch this is not at all unusual on an early Mustang this may even be the original paint on the dash panel because I can see some shipping and stuff around the edges that you would only see if this was original paint and it's kind of cool it has that Dash trim is in decent shape on this um the only thing that if we were staying in the south of this car I would have to have air conditioning this one does not have AC and I'm we're in South Carolina so I'm sweating right now and it's not even Sunny yet I would venture to say this is probably the original Dash trim on this car which is really cool aftermarket dash pad you can tell because the stuff on the top of the dash pad here is not as smooth as the original Dash pads were um I'm gonna check a couple other things but get inside the cart which for me sometimes on these is oh you're a Mustang it's got an aftermarket tilt column it is a Flaming River column aftermarket tack in here which that's pretty cool is kind of an auto gauge with a little bit of a retro feel to it one of the things I'm going to do is I'm going to turn the car to the on position check and make sure my blower works I know that sounds stupid but believe it or not sometimes those things are like that and they don't work when you buy the car okay defrost works fan works in all positions now I'm gonna run outside and check the fog lights I'll let you know how that goes I'm pretty sure that this is about 90 original paint on these inside trim panels somebody's tried to go in and go and do some repairs this kind of stuff you can try to get somebody at a shop to match your paint that you can go in and fix this clean the panel up really nice and take it down there and get paint matched for this just to fix those spots and clean these areas up where there's been a mismatching color all right what I'm doing right now is I'm looking at Cal vents this car these cars are pretty no gallivant problems look at this one though I think we're pretty good at this box and see this it's in really nice shape somebody's done a restoration job on the box it's been repainted black but it is in pretty good shape I'm going to try to roll up underneath here what you're looking for is seeing what's going on up here it's a little hard sometimes to do with the light on but I'm just going to look here and see if I can see anything of the cow much and I can cows on this thing look pretty good yeah I'm pretty happy with this side now I'm going to go around to the driver's side and do the same thing foreign [Music] she's cold right now good oil pressure he break off which we know the e-brake works [Music] it's probably going to be a little bit picky initially I'm not rolling the windows down so that we can actually you can hear what I'm saying without having to deal with that if I'm gonna find out how bad the front end is this is the place I'm gonna find it out wow this is uh this is less of a driveway and more of a tour through the shell holes of Normandy France feel like I'm leaving the bookage no no it is not a power rack oh has a turn right here to the school bus that's typical for an early uh rack from Flaming River now I'm not going to beat on this car or any I'm just going to drive it lightly because I'm not familiar with it it's not my car so I'm not going to go out and tear around in it I'll get myself familiar with it first as I drive it and then we'll see what it does I also want my temperatures to come up to normal we're almost there at 180 so we're probably right about where it needs to be fuel ratio air fuel ratio is nice 15. pretty well tuned little car [Music] feels nice loner says it's about 360 horse all right I'm gonna try to turn this pig around it's not a pig I say that every time I'm turning a car I figure with the driveway he's probably not gonna have a problem with me turning around [Music] [Music] [Music] that was only half throttle this thing stones it's a good running little car temperatures staying around 180. [Music] nice car and a nice truck all right so that's exactly how I go and look at a classic car when I'm going out and looking at one you just saw everything I do the only thing I probably would have done a little differently if I could is I would have put it up on a lift somewhere check the front end a little bit better but driving it will give you some of those same indications any road undulations or bumps that I encountered when I was out running today I honestly didn't hear anything clunky in the front end it sounded great so uh I like this car I think the viewer if he wants to buy this thing you'll have him a really nice Mustang to drive around in and enjoy speaking of enjoying yourself why don't check out our patreon account as the dogs bark and everybody talks uh in the patreon account at the 10 month level you get monthly meetings with me on Zoom it's really a lot of fun we're also doing a thing where once a month we're giving away Doodles that I do but what I'm showing you right now is Bob McDonald's doodle he's one of our patrons that was at our little car show that we had about a month ago on the channel or on our Zoom meeting that we do once a month you know what I'm gonna go with this it's super thanks super thanks is a one-time way to thank us for something we do on this channel if we've got thing I needed to know about that subject and I would like to give you some money we would take a million five if you're willing to give us a million five I know you're probably not gonna do that but that's okay a buck will suffice I'll get 50 cents and you know YouTube will get the rest of it but that's also kind of like telling me I didn't do a good job you didn't like the video because it's like leaving a two cent tip for somebody all right folks be kind to each other love on each other treat each other nice we'll see you next time on auto Resto mod foreign [Music] [Music]
