hydrogen engine works by using hydrogen as a fuel source to power the engine unlike traditional gasoline engines which use a spark to ignite the fuel and air mixture a hydrogen engine uses a process called compression ignition where the fuel is ignited through pressure and heat alone in the hydrogen engine the hydrogen is stored in a tank and then mixed with air in the engine's combustion chamber the mixture is then compressed which increases the temperature and pressure inside the combustion chamber causing the hydrogen to ignite and combust this combustion produces energy which is then used to power the engine and move the vehicle one advantage of hydrogen engines is that they produce zero emissions as the only byproduct of the combustion process is water vapor additionally hydrogen fuel cells are more efficient than traditional gasoline engines with some estimates suggesting that they can achieve up to 3 times the efficiency however there are some challenges associated with hydrogen engines One Challenge is the cost and complexity of producing and storing hydrogen fuel also there is currently limited infrastructure for hydrogen fueling stations which can make it difficult for drivers to find fuel
