Childish Gambino has done everything you can ask for as an artist from releasing number one hit songs to writing his own show the talent of Donald Glover seems to be endless and yet this wasn't supposed to happen at least not realistically [Music] for rapping even before acting Donald Glover would work on skits back in the old YouTube days but you know what I found that being a decent human being really isn't worthy and what the [ __ ] this is what eventually after college he would get started in the show business industry he would do some work on 30 Rock writing scripts working behind the scenes and also winning Awards but what really gave him some recognition was his work as a part of NBC's Community Donald would challenge throughout the show and become a fan favorite for many and I've heard a lot of people say that he is like the heart and soul of the show [Applause] however in 2013 Donald Glover will leave the show I just want to make dope dope [ __ ] from now on like on my own terms in 2011 the rap game was introduced to Childish Gambino with the release of Camp before I [ __ ] it you really hate my lyrics now okay cuddies the album was Donald's first album and you probably recognized a bunch of songs from it [Music] and your face and unashamed of how it feels Gambino's insecurities are a big part of the album's narrative but alone is exactly how I should be the album was mainly received positively by fans and critics but there was a lot of pushbacks from some who felt like the album was too over the top however the potential shown on this album would eventually be expanded on a couple years later worst rapper to ever spit on an open mic in 2013 Childish Gambino would return to music more focused than before with the release of his second album because the internet and it's saying it's because of the internet try once and it's on to the next the album was better on all fronts it tells the story of a narcissistic guy known as the boy the album explores the boys discontent with life despite the money that he had and it takes a look at how he deals with it [Music] the boy's character is developed throughout the album songs showcasing different aspects of his life from his viewpoints on relationships and 3005. sorry I'm just scared of the future till 3005. I got your back we can do this or just how much of an [ __ ] he is division for the album is one of the most ambitious that I've ever seen especially with the fact that there are short films and screenplays that expand the story it shows how much time and care he really put into this and I feel like this was the album that really introduced people to Childish Gambino after Because the Internet Gambino would take a step back to work on a new show called Atlanta what do you do earn nothing no rappers don't want to be rappers they don't no it's true like I've never like every rapper I talk to is like oh I want to do this I want to do that like they're usually artists who want to do a bunch of stuff it would take a few years before Gambino would go back to work on music but when he came back he came back with the purpose of letting people know that he is more than just a rapper there is all boys inside I saw in 2016 he would release awaken my love all of the rapping aspects of Childish Gambino were abandoned but honestly he made it work it is definitely an experimental album I am not gonna lie to you just a lot of things that you wouldn't expect from the Childish Gambino experience but were present nevertheless I'd be crazy not to mention the intro for this album because me and your mama is one of the craziest songs I've ever heard [Music] it is insane and I can only describe it as one of the best horror or Halloween songs that I've ever heard [Music] on top of that awaken my love was critically and commercially more successful than any of his previous albums especially because of the success of Redbone the song's success was not guaranteed especially because it didn't have a music video and Gambino wasn't the biggest hit maker either even 3005 wasn't that big of a hit it never even made it to the top 40 on billboards but Redbone made it all the way up to number 12. and honestly it was a perfect representation of the owl it was heavily influenced by the sound of 70s Funk his vocals are so high pitched that most people didn't think it was actually Gambino singing I didn't at least [Music] but it was and even though it was odd it worked [Music] it was Gambino's biggest hit and he had done so without having to sell out the name Childish Gambino by this point had become one of the most respected in all of music not just hip-hop and on top of that the name Donald Glover was also up there in terms of success that showed that he was working on called Atlanta was a massive success now he was appearing in movies like Spider-Man and Star Wars but it was in 2018 that Childish Gambino would take the World by storm everybody had their own memes about the song their breakdown it was honestly cool to see the different takes of the song song was Gambino's first number one song and understandably so like yeah this was the song for at least a couple of weeks everybody was talking about it I got the strap hey I gotta care the song was just a moment in pop culture in the messaging that the song was going for is still relevant today so I honestly see this song being relevant for years and years into the future unless America like gets rid of like racism and like guns and [ __ ] which we're not we're not come on it's America this is America [Music] his last project came in 2020. it was very early into the quarantine era of our lives and although majorly forgotten it's an interesting listen [Music] and I slept on this album for years so I'm not gonna lie I didn't even know that it feels like summer was on this album because the track list doesn't have the name so I really didn't know until I gave the album a listen and the decision to not name the songs as well as the white background definitely adds to the reason why this is slept on but I actually enjoyed the fact that it happened to happen that way 03 1520s lack of visuals and titles make sense to me the album was worked on after the passing of Donald's dad and the lack of visual and trackless remind me of the nothingness of grief like you could name the songs on the album but does it really make a difference [Music] beside the album King this visual on the live stream and I think it furthers my point although the city's burning we see people that really don't care and that is kind of like what grief is when your world is burning but to everybody else the world is just normal that's what I take it as and I think it's a really cool concept and this album is really the most underrated aspect of Gambino's entire career but I will say by this point of his career it really seems like Childish Gambino has proven one thing at least it's possible to be more than just a rapper or an actor or a comedian or a show writer you don't just have to be Donald Glover you can also be Childish Gambino anyways with that being said uh shout out to uh Jay Dilla you know um shout out to me I lost my voice uh last week so yeah shout out to me for real um anyways uh yeah foreign [Music]
