How an NBA CHAMPIONSHIP RING is Made | Sports Dissected

I'm almost a jeweler one more the year in 1922 is a very important year in sports history because the New York Giants won the World Series in Major League Baseball now what does that have to do with sports as a whole you might ask well in order to commemorate their championship the first-ever championship ring was created and today we're visiting Jason of Beverly Hills to find out just what goes into making one of sports most coveted items I'm Leland with coy ski and welcome to Sports dissected [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] alright guys so we're here with mr. Jason a Russian been the founder and CEO of Jason of Beverly Hills so you are the Jason and Jason of Biblio Jason all right well thanks for inviting us out thank you for having me obviously we're going to get into the making of the championship rings but how did you get into the industry I had a passion for sports had a passion for people and I had a passion for design so I connect instead of being an attorney I wanted to really seek out something that would basically give me those things so I literally started with a pending paper started designing jewelry and when finally that first person said yes to me I basically at that point knew I was in the business who is your president the first person was the late Anthony Mason okay you spray for the next so he's like you know what you bugging me every single time I'm away unless you make me abrasive show them my hotel tomorrow bring me some designs I went home I design a thousand different designs he'd loved one of them 17 years later we got six stores we do over 200 guys in the league where the championship rings a whole bit where'd you get the the companies to start designing well I always loved drawing and I love creating so I kind of like I was far better than that I am now but just because I practice so much more and as I've gotten older and I'm running a company you're dealing with employees the infrastructure you do a little bit less of that now where I just give kind of the concept an idea of what I want and then my design team kind of brings it to fruition you got to be excited I'm ready to go do it you ready I'm ready all right let's go let's do it the first step is what first step is we're gonna come out with the concept the concept the concept the storytelling we're gonna understand the meaning of the season what happened to the identity of the team weren't building into the right I'm ready let's do it all right okay so we're at the brainstorming stage very beginning of the design process what goes on here so the first thing we want to do when we're designing a championship ring is we want to understand what are the monumental statistics the identity of the team team slogan so like back-to-back wins for example right back to back and then we'll say all right the regular-season record was you know 63 and 963 and 19 and the playoff record was 16 and 4 and let's say we want to know what are the the records of during the playoffs for each series maybe the first round was 4 to 1 win second round 4 to 3 fourth round 4 to 1 final round 4 0 so that's important what is the final record of final score of the final game maybe it's 111 to 83 what is a team slogan the Warriors they had strength in numbers so we want to make sure we put that on there and then on top of that we have certain things that the NBA requires you to have on the ring so we have to use a certain level of diamond we have to use a certain type of gold we have to be certain characteristics that are across the board on every championship rings there's rules and regulations so the NBA we got to have a logo on there we got to make sure we include the NBA logo we got to have world champions on they're not national champions that u.s. Champy's world champions okay so you got to have world champs on there at some point as well you want the ring to be able to tell a story not only of the records and but also the identity of the team and the organization so you have to kind of design to tell a story because this is not only a piece of jewelry this is piece of sports memorabilia a piece of sports history you mentioned it to the players you know what the players want all right but there's two sides to it there's the players and there's the owners under their process so that's a huge thing right so when we're designing we got to make two different and distinct groups happy okay what the players like is not necessarily what the ownership and management like so we've got to try to come up with a fair compromise that makes both parties happy at the end a it's the players on the court win the championship but is the owners up above does that pay for the Rings so you got to really be able to create something that you're gonna have it smiles on both faces okay and I think that's a huge huge thing is like getting that getting everyone to love the design is that a long process dealing with with both sides trying to make everybody happy oh it's the it's literally the most arduous process there is that is the toughest part of Matt about making the Rings is to actually make sure you've a design that everyone likes because at the end of the day when you have so many chefs in the kitchen it's hard to cook a good meal all right so we say that we start a design or the the preliminary or the design process yeah now let's go let's go put the put the diamonds in and all that other good stuff exactly let's do it I'm ready all right all right so Jason yes explain to me just what's going on here so over here once we get the basic idea of what kind of storytelling we want to do what kind of shape we want to have it'll get to this step and this step over here is actually building out the 3d CAD that means choosing the size of the Diamonds the diamond layout how it's gonna be laid out and then building each and every piece so that they fit perfectly together because when you build a ring like this it's not one piece this is like 12 or 13 unique separate pieces that all have to be assembled together all have to fit perfectly and the only way to really accomplish this is through the computer program and making sure that we build each and every piece so everything fits together like a puzzle Wow everything here is customizable at this point absolutely so each part is customizable we could take we can decide any kind of shape size of stones any kind of elevation changing the angles like going through all the little details because you can see like even if we here like we have to build this this thing is zoomed in but the actual piece is just about 30 millimeter so like taking each piece and putting it and having it all fit together it's it's an arduous test it takes a long time to be able to get this all done what are what are the different types are different shapes there are different cuts of stone I mean there's so many different shapes so you got you got rounds and marquees and emeralds and pear shapes and princess and lashes and I can go on what's the most coming it route railroad most common and if you notice like almost championship rings 90% of are made of around diamonds okay so this is the the CAD process what's next so from here once this everything's completed we're going to load the file onto a hard drive we take it and we actually print a blue wax let's go do it let's do it alright so we're at the wedding process we're at the waxing so we put the file into this machine this printing machine and now we have the wax and as you can see the wax comes out in multiple pieces this is like the main piece right here that's the base that's what's called the shank which is what everything gets attached to we're gonna top this element to the side everything like that we make sure everything fits make sure we like the way it looks comes from the way it looks on the computer to the way it looks in wax some of your mind changes you're like well I don't like this angle I need this big bigger smaller more left more right so this is where we make whatever adjustments we have to make once we get the wax to the perfect perfect way that we like it from that point you goes into the next step which is pouring it into gold okay well let's go to the next step with the the goal point let's do it alright so this process where we are assembling it right your assembly so once the ball gets poured our jewelers are actually cleaning to make sure all the parts are nice and smooth there's no like everything's been sanded down and polished down so that way all the pieces kind of fit so now is checking to make sure that our job was done correctly and all the pieces fit together so let me see you do it start with this B's right no no aah I'm a gift yeah okay so you got to make sure the posts will match up you're gonna go take that center piece which is no no yeah back make sure those posts match up and actually fit into there okay so I have the post I am lining them up okay don't line up I think it's in there looks like it now take that final piece okay and make sure the post mash up and should slide right in nice I'm almost a jeweler one more yeah you make multiple sizes correct more that's the best one right here is the ladies size okay so depending on the team become out with they want to have the players have a certain size management has a certain size employees have a certain size ladies have a certain size so this one's the lady sighs okay how many how many rings will take me May 14 well it all depends on team you know they but typically you're making between four to six hundred rings so is it true that a Durant ordered like nine or ten piece of rings oh yeah Durant is Andre Iguodala klay Thompson they all order that's funnel race with our family I saw bees in it let's go all right [Music] okay Jason so we're at the diamond set incorrect yeah explain to me what's going on so over here we basically bring the finish goal we are picking the diamonds and hand setting each and every stone in its appropriate place so we want to make sure that stones are all at the same level they're not angled or anything like that so our expert diamond setters go under a microscope and set each and every stone individually roughly how many phones are honoring a championship ring that we've done have been like seven to eight hundred stones per ring so it does take time it is a very careful slow process but you want to make sure that everything looks perfect now do you guys still have the record for most ring or diamonds on a ring we do actually our 2017 warrior ring had more diamonds than any ring a championship ring history across all four major sports okay so we've seen just about every step uh-huh let's go check out the final products do it alright alright let's go with the the final product yeah finished walk me through and tell me one of your favorite moments from each of these works I mean this was the this is the ladies version of the 2009 champion Lakers championship ring what made this so important to me is they actually a team believed in me to be able to do a championship ring this is like the first one we did you see the slanted shaped on the side well it's actually a replica kind of a the actual home stadium and then we have on the side like the record for each each round we have you know the 40 the name of the player the skyline of Los Angeles the year that it was won the regular-season records so I think that was important but what makes the next year's championship ring so important in 2010 is that each and every ring had a piece of the game seven ball built into the inside of the ring Wow so we actually made tons of calls and got a hold of David Stern the Commissioner at the time and he got us the game seven ball and we cut it up into little itty-bitty pieces and actually installed parts of it into the ring so this is the first Warriors ring we did I love this ring because you know at the time we had more diamonds on it than any to bring in NBA history and I was really proud of that but this was a very simplistic way and it was actually one of the first rings that did not have world champions on the top of the Ring because the Warriors were like listen we're a young ownership group we want to have a very minimalist design we just want to have a logo that's it like keep it super minimal and I think that's what we this one kind of changed the way we look at championship rings in that it was it didn't look like a championship ring so this one is the 2017 warriors champion this is actually my favorite this one has the record for the most care weight of any championship ring in history across all four major sports so you're talking about over 12 carats of diamonds you got trapezoid diamonds going around you got blue warrior blue sapphires going over here you have baguettes here round diamonds on the inside the trophies signifying the championship trophy bridge and Oakland and you have diamonds going around the entire ring now this is the latest one this is the 2018 Warriors championship ring what made this ring so famous is that this was the back-to-back championship it was indicated in two ways one you have two trophies on the top but two and more importantly we were able to signify back-to-back by making interchangeable faces and I'll show you how this works it actually looks open opens up you just flip it back around click it back in line it up and now you have a different ring this is storytelling at its finest that's the little detail that you can't you can't see on the Google image exactly but like even the detail over here like you see every player's number on the side of the Ring you see the record of each series on the four corners of the Ring over here you see this group X pattern going around mimics the architecture of Oracle Arena that they played in so there's like a lot of stories in here just us which is the that was kind of their team slogan for the year there's a world champion there's the records for each series there is the back to back element there's a paying homage to the Oakland since the last season in Oakland so like there was there was a lot of things here that was kind of unique to the season I will miss today and I appreciate it it's been a pleasure to see these beautiful rings in a
