do you know this club chances are you may have heard them by name or you knew that they were in the Premier League a couple seasons ago or maybe you've watched the documentary about this club on Netflix as you can tell from the title the club is Sunderland now like many others I didn't really know much about Sunderland other than what I just mentioned but when scrolling through teams to choose from on FC 24 I saw sunderland's badge I saw the founding date and I thought what were they like back then so I entered the rabbit hole you wouldn't know it today but 100 years ago Sunderland was the biggest and most successful team in England and I'm going to show you how good they were and how in the modern day they have fallen into irrelevance Sunderland was founded in 1879 joining the first clubs in British footballing history they dawned a signature red white and black colorway acquiring the nickname by fans the black cats the first ever season of organized football in England began in 1888 where in which Sunderland participated and 4 years later they had won their first ever league title they were only the third Club ever to win a league title after their win the English football pyramid was created separating the good teams from the bad in a tiered system this tier system is still being utilized to this day and Sunderland FC were one of the first to truly achieve success in this format in this format's first season they would win a second consecutive league title in 1893 and would win the league again in 1895 meaning that they had won three League titles in Four Seasons concurrently Aston Villa were also showing their dominance in English football winning five League titles between 1894 and 1900 Sunderland responded by winning the league in 1902 after this period of sust stained Excellence Sunderland began to taper off they would go on to win two more League titles in 1913 and in 1936 bringing their total number of League titles to six their consistent pushes for titles were similar to that of Manchester City in the modern day within the space of 30 years Sunderland had become the most successful Club in England level on League success with Aston Villa Sunderland would also win their first ever FA Cup in 1937 but just as they were beginning to pick up momentum once again again World War III was declared the start of World War II halted all professional football in Britain and sunderland's momentum suffered leaving the club in a standstill after World War II had ended professional football resumed but Sunderland was no longer the club they once were over the years of the war they did not have many of the players they had in the 1930s they needed to recruit a brand new Squad but the ownership wanted to get ahead of the competition as all other clubs were in the same boat so they strategy in the late 1940s was to spend absurd amounts of money bringing in the best players so they could win League titles they broke multiple transfer records on multiple players this Behavior gave the club the nickname the bank of England FC they bought a player named Ivor Broadus who I made my last video about if you want to check that out after this video but in essence he was notable because he was not only a good player he was also the manager of his team and by signing for Sunderland he had accepted a trans transer offer for himself and transferred himself to another team to this day he is the only player to do so Sunderland also broke the British transfer record in signing a player named Len Shackleton who was another highly touted player in English football the stage was set Sunderland had a team of Champions and were ready to challenge for the league title once again in 1950 Sunderland finished third in the league their highest finish in the league since they won the league title in 1936 but Sunderland couldn't translate the spending into any League wins throughout the 40s or 50s and it was about to get worse in 1957 the club was implicated in a major Financial Scandal their overspending on transfers had resulted in the club overspending on wages where the club exceeded the legal wage payment limit to some of its players so the club was fined and the chairman of the club were all kicked out following the Scandal for the first time in the club's history the club was relegated to the second Division and they would not return to the Top Flight for another 6 years but although that may sound positive I must tell you now they will never win another league title the last trophy they would ever win came in 1973 where they won the FA Cup their second FA Cup Triumph came whilst the team was competing in the second division over sunderland's entire history since 1879 they won six League titles and two fa cups the black cats were a team that had reached a plateau they were no longer the team that could compete with other teams at the top of English football But as time approached the 21st century the reputation of Sunderland consistently being a topf flight team was beginning to fade the end of the 20th century was unstable for Sunderland the only highlight during this time was their first appearance in the League Cup Final in 1985 where they lost 1 n to Norwich City again this achievement took place while Sunderland were in the second division but following this appearance the unimaginable happened they were relegated to the third division in 19 87 the lowest division the team had ever been in and just like Sunderland post 1970 Sunderland would continue to bounce back they would pingpong between the first and second division until 1995 where they brought in manager Peter Reed Reed made a promise to the city of Sunderland that he would bring Sunderland up to the newly created premier league and he kept his promise in the 1995 96 season Peter Reed and his Sunderland team were promoted from division 1 to the new Prem Premier League for the first time in the club's history unfortunately their time in the Prem was shortlived as they were relegated in their first season but a trip to the Premier League was enough optimism for Sunderland fans their plans were bright and the new era at Sunderland would begin with a movement of homes they left Roa Park their home stadium since 1898 and moved to the brand new Stadium of Light their home stadium to this day the New Stadium seats 499,000 people and is one of the biggest in during that same season they brought in Striker Kevin Phillips he was the perfect Striker for what Sunderland needed to get back into the Premier League a pure goal scorer and a great partner to Second Striker Nile Quinn in 1999 Sunderland were promoted back to the Premier League by winning the first division with a then record 105 points and in their first season back in the Premier League they shocked everyone Sunderland finished seventh in the league just missing out on European football and Kevin Phillips scored 30 goals in the league earning the Premier League's Golden Boot for the season he also was awarded the European Golden Boot meaning he scored more goals than any other player in Europe he remains the only Englishman ever to have won the award but alas this would be sunderland's highest League finish in the modern era in 2001 Sunderland would again finish seventh but would then be relegated once again in 2003 they were promoted again in 2005 but once again were relegated the club was never able to hold on to their position in the Premier League for longer than four seasons which was detrimental to their goals of returning the club to the elite competition stability was needed and one outside party saw the opportunity headed by ex Sunderland player Nile Quinn Sunderland was bought out by drumav Consortium where they would provide Sunderland with consistent funding for a push to return and stay in the Premier League for many years they promised stability but what followed was far from stable to lead the charge was new manager Roy Keane who again achieved promotion in his first season in 2008 but after an inconsistent start to life in the Prem he resigned although the team was doing okay drille was looking to get out as after all owning a football club is not the cheapest thing in the world they were bought out by Ellis SCH an Irish American businessman team was replaced by Steve Bruce under Bruce Sunderland returned to familiar ways and would break multiple Club transfer records purchasing players like Darren bent for £10 million asiman for 13 million in the 20101 season Bruce LED Sunderland to a solid 10th Place finish but like all previous managers Bruce was sacked the next season he was replaced by Maron O'Neal Who again was sacked 18 months later they hired former West Ham Legend Pao Deano but he did not last a full season Gus poet succeeded too poet would be the most successful of these managers as he guided sundel to a lead leag Cup Final in 2014 where they would lose to Manchester City The Following season poyet was sacked dick advocat was appointed where he saved the club from relegation only to be sacked the next season after another bad start for Sunderland Sunderland was saved again after hiring Sam alladice but allise would leave the club after receiving an offer to become England manager the final manager of the deadly decade for Sunderland was David Moyes Moyes had just come from a TD time at Manchester United was looking to sink his teeth into a team that he could build into a team similar to his former Club Everton but after the worst start in premier league history Sunderland would be relegated when the drille Consortium first bought Sunderland in 2006 they promised to get Sunderland to the Premier League and keep them there for the long term well they surprisingly achieved this Sunderland was in the Premier League for a 10-year streak but those 10 years were far from stable looking back at the time Sunderland appointed eight different man managers in 10 years and in the end they were back where they started but this was not the end of the misery for Sunderland fans in the 20178 season as documented in the popular Netflix show Sunderland till I die Sunderland were relegated to The efl League 1 England's thirdd division being relegated for the second consecutive year following this catastrophe the club was sold and as the years passed many Premier League fans would forget that Sunderland was even in the Premier League it was at that moment that fans knew the dreams of Glory at the top of English football were truly over also they thought in 2022 Sunderland returned to the championship with a young core of players and a belief their story was not over they played exciting counterattacking football and showed no fear The Following Season Sunderland would finish sixth in the championship attempting to achieve a second consecutive promotion and return to the Premier League but they would lose in the playoff semi-finals to eventual playoff winners loose in town a gut punch to the city but not one that would knock them down the mood has shifted around Sunderland the belief in their team is fully restored in the current 2023 24 season they sit in seventh place just outside the playoffs because of sunderland's recent history many Outsiders May doubt sunderland's ability to return to the Premier League but as we've seen from the very first days of Sunderland Football Club this club can achieve anything so just wait they might just surprise you thank you guys so much for watching if you did enjoy my
