I guess it depends on the going rate for Capital Letters.

welcome back to cafe racer garage I'm Dan and today I'm going to be breaking down the budget on the CX 500 scrambler build for anyone who doesn't know I built this bike with a $1,200 budget it was a challenge to see if it could be done and today I'm going to break down that budget and show you exactly what everything costs so that it helps you build your motorcycle whether you're doing a cafe race or a scrambler a baa-baa tracker no matter what sort of motorcycle it is hopefully this video will help you and show you what you can do yourself or how to save money and building your build [Applause] before we get started on today's video I do want to mention something that you may just noticed in the background of that intro I did which was the stainless steel exhaust system this thing has been started so if you're looking forward to that make sure you hit that subscribe button if you haven't already because that video would be coming up very soon and make sure you hit the bell to obviously get notified still waiting on some mufflers for this however you know that whole video will be coming out like relatively soon another thing is the motor gadget em unit video that one's another one that's coming out so that is something that's going to be really cool to watch if you don't know much about the EM unit and also some other little bits and pieces from motor gadget as well you may have noticed and also a bracket to hold your gauge that's another video that I'll be doing very soon so there definitely is some cool videos on the way so make sure you are subscribed so you don't miss any but for now I do need a clean - the CX 500 give it a bit of a wash down and then I can change out this hat for a helmet and take you for a spin [Music] I spend so much time in my garage I really need to get out more and take my bikes out this is amazing today's weather is perfect I think it was like six degrees last night but it's about 21 at the moment so perfect riding weather there is honestly nothing quite like riding a bike that you built yourself it is absolutely an amazing feeling if you are in the process of building a bike or you're looking at buying one to build and then one of the things that I will tell you is that don't get stuck on the finishing product and one of my bike building friends over in the UK Josh actually said it best learn to enjoy the process and the journey because when you hit the destination the next day you'll forget about it you know what it is honestly so true that if you get hung up on just that end result you just you get so frustrated and then you may even stop your build you might not even finish it because of that reason so one thing about this scrambler builders it's really allowed me to be quite creative with my fabrication side of things and it's done two things one it's helped me save money on the bills to keep that budget low and the other thing that's done is obviously it's helped you learn how to make things and you know fabricate something if it's something you want to do yourself and having something custom rather than having something purchased is just to me I think it's just it's awesome because people like all where'd you get those brackets from or where did you get that lucky track from and if you say I made it it's just I don't know it just feels good to know that you've built your own parts by the way I have no idea where I'm going and this is getting quite deep into a rain forest right now I don't know if you can see it in video but there's like a green moss over this road it's quite chilly up here obviously this is a rain forest ikana area there's a little bit of a creek just there Troy nice we could go up there that looks fun let's do that just when I thought I was going to take it on its first little dirt track there's a gate in the way I'm going quite slow at the moment because there's a few blind corners and I don't really want to be collected by a car [Music] all righty so what I've done is I've made a list of everything I purchased for this bike and what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna go through that list with you and just tell you the cost everything that I purchased now just know that everything that I purchased for this bike has either been bought from Amazon eBay or any of my local stores that have the stuff that I need like paint and small things like that so let's get started so starting at the top here the handlebars they were twenty one dollars now the grips were eight dollars and the Gators were six dollars the headlight was I think 35 and the tires now the front tires were a hundred and fifty dollars for the front one and the rear one was one hundred and forty five dollars the exhaust pipe for the exhaust system pretty much from here to here is the original part and from there on is just a bunch of plaque cuts and small pieces of pipe which I've purchased I've done a full video on how I built that and the muffler itself was twenty dollars that I got secondhand and made it fit the exhaust system was thirty just for the parts that I got so $50 you got a whole exhaust system pretty much custom made which is pretty damn cool apart from the exhaust wrap which is obviously being put on that's $32 for the exhaust wrap so with the powder coating on this bike the frame and this luggage rack and the front and rear fenders and a few small other bits and pieces I got it for free I did a trade swap which what I mean by that is if you're good at something or you've got a trade you can obviously swap that for somebody else who has a trade their trade was obviously a powder coating so I swapped my skill for theirs and therefore I got the powder coating done for free if you can paint and you know someone who's an electrician do a bit of a swap if you can but with the green paint on this tank I've written down here $15 I think it was more than that to be honest with you so what we'll do is I'll add that into the miscellaneous stuff at the end but black paint $30 because it's random black paint like obviously you know things that just needed to get coated in black like stuff around here and you know the radiator you know just various bits and pieces which I wanted to paint myself rather than powder coat so black paint that was $30 wrinkle paint was seventeen dollars for the engine as you can see the engines been done in that really nice texture that was called wrinkle paint I've done a full video on that now the shocks were $85 it's probably a fairly expensive thing I had a set of shocks on this it originally and then I changed them out with these ones but they're $85 and they're really really good they work really well probably a little bit on the hard side I would like to soften that up a little bit if I can but they're pretty damn good shocks for what they are so there are $85 the speedo was like 17 dollars I've seen them down to like $13 or something that was a little herb a special so those things are good does the job so for the foam and the vinyl on the seat I've written pretty much you know foam $10 vinyl $15 and pretty much that was leftover from my CB bill so I had some still sitting there so I do have the exact same vinyl that I used on this seat as well as the one I used on my CB 750 as well as the foam for the high-density for the seats on motorcycles it's all available on my website I'll leave a link to my website in the description below I have a few other bits and pieces there some really fancy which I will be replacing these guys like the colours that go for the exhaust on CNC made out of aluminium so one of the most expensive items I purchased on this build was the battery it was a lithium ion battery shirai is the brand and it was 202 dollars now that was because I wanted to fit a small battery and hide everything and have all this open that's the reason I went that way I didn't want a battery to be exposed anywhere so to have a small one you have to spend the money with the turn signals they were $37 and that kept the proportions right because I'm really happy with the size of these and they're also LED so I'm happy with that now the hoop was pretty much built by me if you haven't seen that video I'll leave a link to that video in the description and below as well that hoop was pretty much 10 bucks because that's what I paid in material everything else I had in scrap to actually make it I showed the process on how to make it there are other ways to do it than the way I showed one of which is using heat but basically I didn't use heat there's other ways to do it like using heat and I didn't do that I just wanted to show the process of bending around something and that's what I did so if that is interest to you and you want to make a specific size hoop or width then check that video out so the rear wheel on this bike was originally a 16 and I've changed the out to an 18 so it cost me $100 I purchased that I think from local classifier place called gum tree here in Australia so for the tail light on this build it was $30 for that round one now we could possibly add the second taillight into this as well the only reason I have two taillights is because this frame that I made the luggage rack well actually kind of sort of blocked it a little bit so I put a second one in you don't necessarily need to do that I'm not entirely sure of that second Tyler what a costs but we'll sort of throw those sort of things in the miscellaneous at the end because I don't actually have the price of that right now okay what else do we got so tail light $30 brake pads were pretty much the front brake pads I've kept the original rear ones the rear shoes were fine but the front brake pads they cost me 16 dollars anyhow the fiberglass fiberglass that I've used on this build was to make that seat pen you can use aluminium you can use plastic I haven't actually lined it yet I just need to get some like I guess some sort of felt material or something align this however that's the fiberglass that was very minimal there but it's still not the cheapest thing to get so that ended up costing me $60 for all the fiberglass resin and the chopped strand mat so this is the battery model that I used for the CX 500 just in case anyone's interested so for the horn on this I pretty much spent $3 yeah $3 for the horn and kind of sounds like $3 so I need to really upgrade that that's something that I'm not really happy with it doesn't have that nice I guess aggressiveness is you know get out of my way kind of sound you always have this here though so if you want someone to move you just give it a Rev if you've got a loud enough exhaust they're gonna hear you okay so the next thing is what I've already mentioned the second hand muffler that was $20 and that was pretty much me hunting around a few muffler places and I found one that I liked so I made it fit and retrofitted it to it and I've made a video on that as well so back onto the seat these three wires here actually for the secondary taillight for the luggage rack and they're gonna have a clip on them like this so that I can quickly release it and take this luggage rack off if ever I want to and I like it actually to be totally honest with you ever since I put it on there I actually think it suits it and I'm probably going to leave it on there and I may not even do this but it's nice to have in case you do want to remove it for whatever reason but the thing that I want to mention under here is this seat latch this seat latch here cost me thirteen dollars secondhand and I even made like a special little lever thing here from up underneath you can just grab that and pull it down I did a video on that again for all the videos that I've mentioned so far that are going to be in the description just look for the words that I've said like luggage rack seat latch you know seat build those kind of things and I'll just leave those in the description for you to go and just click through and just watch those if that's something of interest so that there was the last thing on the list and I want to mention there's probably some stuff that I may have forgotten or missed or you know like oh yeah for pod filters so I haven't actually put those on the list so let's put those in the miscellaneous stuff as well see like I said there's some things that I may have not seen but all the fabricators side of things didn't cost me anything so for the front fender the headlight grille the headlight bracket the bracket clamps that go onto the tubes here all of these are being custom made I've pretty much fabricated all of that stuff the gauge holder fabricated what else have I done here I pretty much chopped the back end down as I've mentioned I've pretty much trimmed that guy made the actual luggage rack so all these things have been fabricated didn't cost me anything but just scrap metal really so if we put about a hundred to one hundred and fifty dollars in miscellaneous stuff you know give or take it could be more than that it could be less than that I really don't know so let's just say a hundred and fifty dollars worst case on miscellaneous stuff so now that the twelve hundred dollar budget build is complete have we stayed under budget the total cost for everything that I've spent if you haven't been following along with a calculator is four hundred and fifty seven dollars so actually just a little bit over the twelve hundred dollars however just to keep in mind I have sold some parts on this build the original parts like the gauges the plastics the rear wheel all those parts have been sold which recoups me two hundred and sixty dollars so we're back down to nine hundred and ninety seven dollars now that can take into consideration the few of the miscellaneous parts that I may have forgotten please leave me a comment if you think I've forgotten something on this build like the pod filters those you don't necessarily have to use those style of pop filters you can use the cheaper however I wouldn't recommend it so things like that can be added to this so $997 is where it sits right now can you build a motorcycle on a 12 an adult budget the answer is yes so the last thing I'm going to say here is if you decide to build yourself a budget motorcycle like this work out what your budget is and double it I'm not saying it's gonna cost you double just double it so that you've got more money there for the things that you don't foresee things can break things can snap things can change your ideas can change you might want to add more to it later down the track but to be totally honest with you this was a real challenge for me to stay under that budget I mean it's done now it's finished but for instance that little muffler that you see there that secondhand I hunted around for ages to try and find something that would suit this build that was secondhand or something that was cheap because mufflers just generally are not that cheap and unless you get the generic one then you know you're going to spend a couple hundred bucks or at least 150 dollars on a decent muffler and it wasn't in the build for this so I spent like $30 on the exhaust system I wasn't about to spend a hundred and fifty two hundred dollars on a muffler for something that I'm trying to stay under budget ordinarily yes I would love to spend $200 on a muffler for this thing would sound awesome but I was just so lucky to find that and that's what I'm talking about just looking around and trying to make your own bracketry obviously the bracket was missing for the rear brake up there so I had to make my own making your own headlight brackets and grill and stuff like that is next to nothing because it's just scrapped if you have the ability to get hold of a welder and a grinder you can do this sort of stuff so hopefully by me breaking that budget down gives you a bit of an understanding of what things are going to cost for your build so you can work on your budget but anyway let's jump back up on that saddle and take this guy home I've had a lot of comments and also emails coming through people saying hey I hope you don't mind but I kind of stole your idea with this well the hot reason that I put this stuff out on YouTube is to help you have a go and you haven't actually stolen my idea just so you know you've just taken an idea that you've seen and you've made it your own I don't like people to think that you know I'm the only one that can create things or if I'm the one that created this idea and so you can't take it by all means if you see something that I've done on my bill just do it just make it yours like I don't mind it it's honestly not something that I'm trying to keep to myself and be like I'm the only one with this you know this is my design and I came up with it I want you guys to have a go the whole reason I have this channel and the whole reason I'm starting a website and growing products is to try and help you guys build your motorcycles build something that you love I really hope you get to the point of a build like this and you've completed it and you get to ride it and experience the feeling of actually having something that you've completely pulled apart or customized and put back together but please and I mean this do not get fixed on the end result focus on the journey it's gonna take you a year two years five years whatever it is just enjoy it because it is a process yeah you're gonna have some times where you're gonna have some blood sweat and tears you're gonna want to pull your hair out and you're gonna have some good times where you're seeing there with a beer and you're like man I did a good job at look so cool so just enjoy that whole process if you focus on the end result it's going to be frustrating you the entire time trust me anyway guys that's it for this video have an amazing day and I'll chat with you in the next one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
