if your water pipes make a banging sound you're not alone this common problem even has a cool name the water hammer you see there are sections of your water pipes called air cushioning chambers that use the air to help absorb some of the shock from the water when you turn off the faucet similar to putting your finger over a drinking straw to stop it from filling up occasionally those chambers fill with water which means there's no cushion so the force of the water whacks the pipes into the wall studs or joists or whatever's next to it obviously it's not good for the pipes so here's how to make it right again shut off your home's main water valve then open up all the hot and cold water taps and let all the water drain out ok turn that main water supply back on when the water starts flowing freely without sputtering air you could turn off your faucets that's it you're done this is a great quick fix that works most of the time if it doesn't you may have to look into more complex solutions like adding pressure regulators cushioning pipes within the walls or adding more air chambers good luck and happy plumbing
