House Hunters September 29, 2021 "Safety or Convenience in Tampa"

is really pretty meredith and william are moving their family from cincinnati to tampa florida for her surgical residency i pulled a couple houses on davis islands tampa general hospital is here close to work she also wants a grand home with southern charm this is a porch that would hold a porch swing it's adorable but her engineer husband wants a sturdy brick ranch since he's concerned about storms i don't want all the bedrooms upstairs then that gets blown away are these windows hurricane no they are not i'm worried about this and then there's the space for her mother who'll be living with them whoa this is perfect for your mother that's almost as big as a condo just for your mom [Music] look at the boat oh yeah this is really pretty i'm william i'm meredith and we've been married for almost four years now we're coming from a condo in cincinnati we've got three days in tampa our goal is to buy a house there you go there's that ac yeah it feels good even though we just chill i've been a medical student the past four years and i'm starting a plastic surgery residency at the university of south florida that's bringing us to tampa i'm a mechanical engineering graduate but i've been working in business and technology consulting a couple years ago switched from traveling every week to being fully remote we didn't get lunch because the airport so let's eat right all right you're always hungry [Music] that's cause you never let me eat you're always on the go lunch is voice we met at ohio state freshman year at the end of sophomore year started hanging out a little bit more then when he drove me to the mcat at 4 00 am or something i knew we have two cats sibling kitties brother and sister now we also have a one-year-old a human baby girl and mirabelle maybe just this table road's a little loud i think i sort of drive william crazy at times they're very pragmatic pretty calculated careful a planner meredith is more of a risk taker than i am you've got to be within striking distance of tampa general yeah we want to stay within a 15-minute drive so that i might be able to spend more nights sleeping at home that would be really helpful for us as a family but buying near tampa general means buying near the water i'm a little hesitant though about getting right along the coastlines that's the flood risk zone and we've never had to deal with anything like that in ohio could get washed away i am willing to take that risk if it is the right house i think one story that looks really solid tampa's beautiful but i realize it comes with some risks with storms i really want a single story craftsman ranch something that i know will hold its own against mother nature here and know that we're in a safe place i still want something grand you always want something grand what does that mean if you're in something with some cream you would want these cheese and crackers to be grand i want the palm tree in the front yard i want that charming porch some of those kind of southern estate houses that's what i love i want a two-story i want the bedrooms upstairs you can find it but it's got to have hurricane impact windows i don't want to see anything on the track record that says it's an area that normally gets flooded my mom is moving in with us to watch the baby so bedrooms are a big deal ideally a mother in last week definitely have her own bathroom bedroom i would love to have my own room as an office somewhere where i could be a little bit more sound proof i think we're gonna have to push the price up as much as we can with this physician loan and our savings because this has to be the right house we've been lucky enough to get a physician loan since i'm an incoming resident that said i'm really comfortable with 800 000. he's a worrywort i'd like to go up to a million dollars just because we can go to a million dollars doesn't mean we should with just three days in the area to find a house they head out with their broker patrick to an exclusive island community hope you guys are ready to make a decision because right now things are selling within a day or two i pulled a couple houses on davis islands tampa general hospital is here close to work so the first house is four bedrooms two ensuites and it's 8.50 sounds pretty good [Music] oh my gosh what a nice front yard william and meredith are under a tight timeline our goals today are to find them home so they get into a place as soon as possible this house is very desirable for davis islands it has a lot of nice features in the home so i think they're really gonna like it i think it's adorable i don't really like this vinyl siding not crazy about the second story wouldn't it be nice to have it on one this is a porch that would hold a pork swing it's great it looks like there's a second entrance it has a little play room over there but this doesn't seem like a neighborhood i don't know you're like looking across that industry port of tampa and peter o'night airport okay for the front yard i can already see the airport but even the ships closer than i would have liked or thought was possible not something i want to live with day in day out [Music] and the horn right there it opens towards you right interesting great fans new carpet it does feel pretty beachy but it does that this is a little more florida patrick are yes windows hurricane no they are not and i gotta think that's a pretty big breeze yeah hopefully not oh we don't look at anything that is the room next door the game room which is an addition they covered this window that is why that is like that so we wrap around your kitchen sure you guys said this oh yeah that's is that just uh some plexiglass i like that though because then for safety okay yeah you'll like that i guess uh it's great i mean it's got the beachy feel looks a little worn i feel like that's a bit surprising for the price point value is really here even with the things that need to be done in the house davis island right now is one of the most popular areas in all of tampa do you think if we put money in to fix this we would get it back absolutely it seems like at 8.50 that's actually a really good deal for this area absolutely it really is oh so this would be a great office maybe oh it's not enclosed i thought it was going to be enclosed and it was going to be like oh sound proof area i'm worried about this well if this is not a good office it might be a good play room yeah yeah but now i'm wondering where my office would be if this wasn't the intended office so well there's more rooms let's go take a look pretty stairs okay we've got a bathroom here oh it's the cute flooring so yeah do you like that i do like the floors i don't reminds me of something in my grandma's house and charming this staircase is different than the front one this is an addition it's separate from the original house kind of good because if we're gonna have my mom more separation is better my mom our our daughters nona will be moving in with us she's pretty loud you know i i think mom and daughter a relationship we can kind of trigger each other so some space is good and here's one of the main bedrooms look at this ladder i really like that let's see we have storage up above that's really nice having a separate area for your mom would be amazing i actually really like yeah that there's a wall between us look how wide this is what are we going to end up doing to put a baby gate there are you going to be a brand you know you like everyone wakes up up here and then you go down and eat breakfast let's take a look at the bedroom oh it's big nice size nice light so i'm wondering where mirabelle would sleep yeah you have two additional bedrooms this would be a great nursery we're right there close yes not the same size are these those termite droppings i see one oh yeah this house is a bit scary to consider given it has two floors it's only siding on the outside i grew up in a brick house i'm used to being sturdy enough not having to worry about some of the storms the windows don't seem sturdy it seems like there might be some termite damage definitely not a great feeling to think about oh interesting this is great it's like a little beer garden this isn't the ideal outdoor space the rest is eaten up by paint but it's shaded and it's bug-free very private that's true [Music] i think it makes a lot of sense this is exactly what i want to drive up to it's a cute colonial great location i don't like having the airport right there my real complaint is just the little bits and pieces the windows some of the wear and tear there i think that stuff is what could add up quickly if we're not paying attention [Music] so now they're heading to a fully renovated place but william's worried about why it was renovated they renovated it because something that happened william and meredith only have a few days in tampa to find a home before she starts her surgical residency so they're brokers showing them another home on davis islands closer to the hospital next we're going to be looking at a four bedrooms three and a half baths priced at 8.99 and it's been completely renovated and they renovated it because something that happened with like flooding no it was something that they wanted to do doesn't look that grand for 900 000. this house is completely renovated in a great location it's very close to her work has the construction quality that william wants it is a showstopper everything has been redone in this house and it has hurricane resistant windows the hospital you can either drive or ride a bike yay brick is great brick would definitely need to be painted the brick is fine what do you mean the mismatch why do you have to paint it i don't love this look but we have the second floor yeah but i don't want all the bedrooms upstairs then that gets blown away yo yeah just hits you okay so you walk in and it's a wall not much of an entry it's just i didn't i didn't expect that though so there's right here so it's a split level yes i mean it'd be so much nicer if it was just the same floor you're being an early critic and you also have the stairs on that side so mirabelle would need not only one baby gate here at the top and bottom but now we're going to need them on both sides of the hallway so we're going to have one two three baby gates four maybe even six baby gates are cheap i think it's nice to have multiple levels the kitchen i love it's renovated the kitchen's nice which direction do you want to go upstairs or downstairs i want to see what this okay aside best part of the house this is perfect for your mother approximately 600 square feet that's almost as big as a condo right now in cincy just for your mom but if she's gonna come down and be on full-time baby duty you know it could be good this is a lot this is a lot of space it's really awesome rent this out if there were no nona yeah that's true if things change that is hard down the line yeah that could be something you know we're thinking about so is this so this is a bedroom with a full bath yeah this is great the in-law suite here is really great for meredith's mom tempted to maybe steal it ourselves because it's so good and i can see us maybe taking that over if we could put an office space back there this is a great sized room i don't know if it could be office material so we're here all three bedrooms right here this is nice this could be mirabelle's nursery yeah mirror is the other one this feels more like an office size it seems like there's options but there's not an immediately great option feels like we're kind of forcing our lifestyle into the house so this is the primary bedroom not a whole lot bigger for almost a million dollars this doesn't feel like a luxurious main bed yeah well i think you get that when you go out the door so i think that's where we're putting all of our money and then when it comes to here we're losing out i really like being close to the hospital location's a big deal for me and the on-call hospital is right here and it seems like the davis islands community is something we'd really love to be a part of beautiful back patio so saltwater pool this is a great sized pool we've got mirabelle and we're going to have to put a fence up around this so it's not going to look as pretty as it does right now i will be a little capable swimmer but i don't know if we can plan on that at age one i'm not a fan of having the pole in the backyard oh [Music] this house is a little more ohio mid-century split level not a grand you know a state home but it's in a great spot the house it just doesn't seem as practical the split level i hate i mean i'm going to be walking through gates left and right this house is going to go really fast price is right it's completely renovated it's on davis islands davis allen's is great we can't live in the whole island we are going to be living in the house so the house has to also work for us not just the island with time running out and the pressure mounting william and meredith are still at odds finally a ranch i mean it looks nice houses are never gonna be my thing [Music] with just one day left in tampa patrick's found a house that meets william's safety wants is close to the hospital for meredith and has an attractive price it's 660. i mean yeah you'd appreciate that price but i don't see a second story i prefer not to have a second story here in florida where we're not used to the tropical storms think about it's a consideration but we don't want to be mired in the fear of something that's not all that likely to happen well i won't have the fear if we have a solid place i think you're so paranoid [Music] finally a ranch right right big wall of brick there that was a garage at one time but now it's a bedroom i mean it looks nice ranch houses are never going to be my thing but the yard is great i see these palm trees i like that very into that we have a fantastic house to look at today it's not in a flood zone william is going to like the safety and the fact that it's been completely renovated new windows are they hurricane windows they're double pane okay double pane windows they're not which also i'm not as worried about it necessarily being right here more inland than when we were on the island oh wow wow this looks great quartz countertops stainless steel appliances this is a lot bigger than the fridge that we have right this is fine and great but we're gonna wish that it was cabinets is it functional it is fun what do you mean that's the news that's the new look right now you've got uh cabinets below and you have a huge pantry oh whoa look how cute it is huge i'll admit nice kitchen i almost killed you to say that it's a good size yeah would you put mirabelle right here this front-facing room you can put your mom in this room though the neat thing about this house is that there is a lot of flex space having the flexibility will be really helpful because with your mom coming down to help we'll want to make sure she's set up i'm going to want a room to work in so we'll each have to have our corners all right very similar what i'm not seeing in these rooms is ceiling fans and this is florida putting a ceiling fan in is probably not out of the question by any means okay [Music] watch your step yeah this is not a small drop no that is gonna need a baby gate this is what i was talking about being a flex space it might have to be my mom's space it might be a little bit too close to the primary bedroom okay yeah this house does not have an in-law suite and i think it's important for me if i'm gonna live with my mom under roof for most of the year she needs her space for her and for us wow it's very nice back here it's a luxury hotel room right here and this is the main bathroom then right it's a nice bathroom it just so you like it i like the bathroom not the entire house i don't know it feels like you're fighting it they did an incredible job renovating it but it's not in davis island we'd love to be closer to the water is this included as part of the 2200 square feet this is considered extra square footage okay this is what i imagine indoor outdoor living thanks patrick i think that was a really good one you're welcome see you soon i felt like you were trying not to like it in front of patrick it's not perfect is this the vision of the house where you see our family this is what i thought to the florida neighborhood it's higher up don't have to worry about a flood plain it fits everything we need right away i think it's a little tough to house hunt with someone who's more cautious than i am so i think this house is really comfortable for him i understand that but i think most houses are still standing and you know we're not on some barrier island it's tampa it's been here i'm not too worried [Music] after three days in florida meredith and william need to pick a house before they head back to ohio i really loved that traditional colonial the layout made a lot of sense and had a whole separate area where my mom has a bedroom on a second floor her own private bathroom looking across at the airport and the ships is a big negative for me davis islands is the most desirable area in tampa i certainly love the vibe and with the on-call hospital right there what about the other one on davis islands the split level with the pool i really really like that kitchen i think they did a good job redoing it and it's truly a separate area for my mom tons of stairs gonna have gates all over the place it's gonna be hard to watch maribel the pool i'm iffy about it the safety is a huge factor i think location for me is amazing yeah i just don't know if the location is really that primo and worth having some of the negatives that go along with it i feel pretty good though about the ranch it had the bedrooms we needed the house you know it's gonna stand the test of time it's been there for 60 plus years freshly renovated from an elevation standpoint from a flood risk standpoint huge pros for me it's beautiful and i would feel like i was living in a luxury hotel it's not the perfect layout for our specific situation i don't like this pressure we gotta bite the bullet and just do it and cross our fingers that the offer gets accepted [Music] listen meg there you go oh only when you do it's easy why are you complaining from daddy so we chose the split level with the pool on davis islands for me what really pushed me over the edge was just understanding how well done the renovation was they redid the electrical the plumbing the roof it's a very solid home for william it's been really comforting we found out from a neighbor that the previous owner was an engineer so everything's done really well this is actually quite heavy wait well it does fit the width like i measured meredith definitely won out with the location it'll make things at home a bit easier being closer to the main hospital where meredith is on call there's a lot of value in that the island suburb life we've really enjoyed the area wait why does that go there i like it isn't the point to hang coats or something it's speechy there's a few things we had to compromise with this house the split level was a big one for me also i don't really have a dedicated office space right now i'm set up in the back corner of the house it's sort of embedded in the mother loft suite right now it's a dedicated room but it's not private it's good enough for right now we'll have to test it out once meredith's mom is here and understanding how much noise that i'll make we have some ideas maybe a barn door over it to help with some of the sound this house was listed at 8.99 we ended up closing we got it all cash offers so we had to slip in and add a little more and meredith wrote a good letter we talked about how we really wanted to use the mother-in-law suite for the mother-in-law and this house is perfect for our situation luckily the owners thought so too mother-in-law suite is lovely you know my mom's not down here yet but we've had other family visitors and it's been really really nice and it's their own wing of the house look at us go swimming clock is ticking for the start of residency but we're starting to feel a bit more set up it's been really fun living on this island
