[Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] welcome to the Lindbergh Center at Hopkins high school for the section 6 class for a girls basketball championship it's round three between number two Wayzata and number one Hopkins hi I'm Jay Wilcox along with Ryan Iverson and Ryan obviously these teams met a couple times in the regular season but boy a whole different thing tonight the loser will be done for the year the winner that's the state what's that age-old question Jo you play it's not team 3 times is it hard to beat him three times or do you have an advantage in confidence because you've already beaten up twice so I think Hopkins is coming into this game with a lot of confidence especially after their blowout win at Wayzata just a few weeks ago if you're wise ed up and we talked about it during that broadcast maybe they didn't show all their cards and maybe they have some up their sleeve what can they do differently to get a different outcome tonight now the first meeting over here was pretty close the second one not nearly so much but Wayzata doesn't seem to really be bothered by that I think there are confident group they're not necessarily intimidated but they still haven't know the how to play really well I think they know what they have to do to win and sometimes you're playing a team you haven't seen you're not sure how you stack up they know tonight against Hopkins they got to take care of the basketball they got to play to their advantage which is their size and their length and they have to not let them to limit Hopkins in transition and you have to know where Paige Becker says so they can do those things just limit turnovers and make their shots and play to their size advantage they're gonna have a shot to win tonight a new thing this year we don't have a neutral site the top seed got the home for an advantage here tonight differing opinions on how much that matters I think it matters I really do I think when you're playing at home and you got your crowd and you can hear the bands already right now and there's overflow crowd it I think it helps the home team the one thing you can do is it can add a little bit of extra pressure and nerves really for both teams but also for the home team because you got all your friends and everyone then the school is here watching so I think it's going to be a little bit of an advantage for Hopkins but why is that it played them here just you know in early February and played them really close so they're familiar and I think that's gonna help him Jill let's look at key players in tonight's game starting with the visiting Trojans and players at a great career she doesn't want it to end tonight Kelly Tyson she's got to be great tonight she's got to be great she needs to be in 15 and 10 rebounds tonight she's got a dominate use her senior leadership use her leg and I think they need her to be aggressive the the question when you play Hopkins can you score with them and she needs to Kelly needs to be in the high teens tonight if not in the 20s and she's a great player great rebounder smart and she's got to be very aggressive tonight and for Hopkins Paige backers obviously one of the best players in the country the first game around she scored in the 40s the second time wasn't looking for her shot early but still had a very nice night well you and I both said that night we thought she wasn't very aggressive she still had I think 26 or 27 so she's that good right when she's unaggressive so you can still get the high 20s I think when your season is on the line you need your best player to set the tone I look for Paige to come out tonight and be aggressive scoring the basket I've always thought Hopkins what she's scoring that the team's focused so much on her that's when she becomes a really dynamic playmaker so look for her to be aggressive early on get her team up to a good start tonight all right should be a great battle some people consider this the two best teams in Minnesota but only one can advance to the state for a tournament Wayzata and Hopkins tipped off in a moment here on CC exports [Music] you [Music] you [Music] and about set for tip-off here tonight as the Trojans and Royals for a third time this season why is that his only two losses we said coming to Hopkins this year the Royals really their only real test was the first meeting here with the Trojans at the Lindbergh Center Tyson will jump it up here against a Miami against the Miami G and controlled by Hopkins to start it out to lay low to coalesce back out top to Becker's [Applause] backers pitching it to the corner now two colas pulls up from 15 too strong with that one rebound by Stewart nice job by was that in their one shot and done and that's what they got to do with their size they got a defensive rebound really well tonight Mara Braun flashing free briefly but then picked up her dribble and throws it into the Hopkins bench and that was something we saw more than Wayzata would have liked in that second meeting over at Wayzata you know and we set it to during that broadcast J is Hopkins just makes you speed up on offense and you just got to slow down you got your pivot ball fakes you got to be able to deliver those kind of passes download it your colas up and over at Johnson and good and the first bucket goes up for Hopkins to nothing Royals well Chiklis it a great job of using her body and kind of double-pumped hung in the air just a little bit to be able to get that shot up backers out on the wing denying knocked it loose Johnson trying to recover and now does get it to broaden for the layup puts up play what hustle by jenna johnson fight with that not only did she get my ball j but she had the wherewithal to get her head up beautiful pass nice first basket [Applause] Paige Becker's with it here two colas comes out to get trying to go inside to Nagi have a little trouble with the handle so kick it back out Tyson on backers here that was maybe one of the wrinkles that Mike Schumacher was talking about but somebody was a lot of length on Paige Becker's not normally the matchup to you'd necessarily think to see no but I like that there's a great job getting in the passing lane by Maura Braun and you know she had a really aggressive good game against Hopkins the last time and she's off to a great start for early points getting up in the passing lanes to kind of given Hopkins a little dose of what they'd like to do Packers over to KK Adams gets the screen and cuts down the middle trying to shovel it to two colas and scores [Music] so two players each have both buckets for their teams and there's Becker's with an easy steal there over to two colas this time no good Stuart rebounds that's what you got a ball fake against Hopkins they do such a good job especially Bates Becker's I'm just kind of playing that free safety ball fake skin up going one way backdoors that's how you try to alleviate some of that pressure Schrader trying to just to Tyson but it gets away from her and out will have a turnover and Hopkins basketball here for two for early tie here and force up Jasmine smiley number 23 coming in to replace Ron for Wayzata believe me it's not because bran isn't playing well I think she probably expended a ton of energy early on and they want to get her a little breather and also get smiley who's a great shooter maybe a little bit of an early opportunity well that's the thing - Lee complain a game like this with this kind of atmosphere a lot at stake you tend to spend a lot of energy early so he can settle down and just get into that rhythm of the game - colas gets the bounce on that one she has all three Hopkins buckets at 6:00 for Royals I got six for two colas over mara bronze so far trade are being hounded here as great d by a maya battle schraeder to that of a very good game last time around drives into the baseline year goes up with the left hand no good Annika Stewart then this badly come in close she looked like she had a great rebound but then really missed the shot by quite a bit well two things I think are positives there j4 why's that a me me straighter being aggressive looking to score they need her to do that secondly a great job by Stewart they're getting great position she's just got to finish that twice and looking to attack no good there's any of the rebound on who and that's what dribble Drive penetration will do defense collapses it opens it up for other players to be able to get offensive rebound Najee has that one block Jenna Johnson denies it Braun quickly back in traitor will get a breather here for Wayzata nice block here the trailer is nagi attacking with the left hand Johnson this match right here and with ouchies Wow and that's what link can do it can cover up mistakes defensive rotations you might be a step slow you might get beat off the dribble J but if you got that link you can block those shots and recover Tyson LeBron and then off the leg of Jenna Johnson and there again you talked about how Hopkins speeds you up to look at Mike Schumacher the Trojans head coach and took his team to state the first year when he took over he's actually still kind of an interim coach at that time we're gonna more on that later in the evening but I think it's safe to say that they've been kind of eyeing this matchup all season thinking this was gonna be the section final battle shooting it no good smiley up for the war well keep an eye on Amaya battle I thought she had a terrific game last time against Wayzata played great defense against meat nice trader also backed out some shots and is able to score Tyson attacks and scores and that's what we talked about in the pregame her being aggressive that only does she have to defensively try to guard Paige backers that they need her doing exactly that using her quickness for someone her size and length she's got great quickness yeah and the meeting at Wayzata she made some good moves but had a little bit of trouble finishing some of those close in shot so it's important that they be efficient and you're not gonna say we need to shoot 80 percent or anything like that because that's just not gonna happen but you have to when you get the chances you have to finish it you think you have to make the shots that you expect you're expected to make right layups are expected to make you know that's a great move she's got to be able to finish that and the backers fouled from behind by Tyson boy just a great little slip move by Paige Becker's and to get herself free it wasn't anything you know really out of the ordinary a good read of the plant you know and the skill that that people never talk about you see great players at score twenty five thirty again yes they're great they're talented but how do they always manage to be open that much to it you look at just how she set that back cut up it was just beautiful and it's not easy to do a lot of people can't do it but you got to have the right footwork the right timing changes speed and the great trust with whoever's impounding that ball to look for it as well Taylor Woodson 32 and for Hopkins we saw her and we also saw Lydia hey number 15 in for Wayzata ii treats are also good for Becker's and we're even up now at 8 apiece is Mara Braun with it for Wayzata now Kelly Tyson looking to attack and was fouled on the way up two things I really like about it so far they're handling the full-court press we've seen a couple of turnovers it's a half court the other thing I love right now is theis it being aggressive they're driving hard if she could get someone and Hopkins in foul trouble that could be a huge huge play and I think that's what Wayzata is learned over the years is that one--some on the defense is aggressive at you you go at them instead of away from Becker's with another scale way up to it just to get great anticipation by Paige Becker's that the other thing that you'd love to see if you're a Hopkins fan is you get a great score there's another turnover a great score if they can get an easy basket like this you got two free throws here you can see great job Yoshi tipped it up ahead door and you get an easy layup all of a sudden that hoop starts getting bigger and bigger for someone like Paige Becker's Paige's basketball skills are great but I think sometimes you don't realize until you're right up close like we our whole athletic is to how quick to the ball on plays like that here's Becker's a drive missed it but would send the rebound to colas will let it fly from the baseline good walk out by Tyson Tyson picks up her dribble on high Adams hounding her but she gets it away - hey [Applause] near steal their Schrader now stepping in Johnson will swing it over the hay for a three short on the rim there and to coil us out of their whippet Chicago's all wait for - she has eight I just love those kind of plays by her she battles for the rebound rips it away three seconds later she's going to count coast-to-coast for a layout she's just got that uncanny ability wrong almost got to the hoop but then have it raked away - Cole was trying to run it down saved it the right - Johnson fraid are looking to push the temple the other way he finds Johnson alone under noon layup is good Adams tried to draw the charge but they wouldn't give it a smart play by KK Adams to try there I like the referees are letting some of that contact go and I'm a big fan of that I like to let's let the girls play like that and a nice pass and a big bucket to buy Jenny Johnson back to her pass to Woodson she powers it up and in four-point lead again for Hopkins you see how strong of a move that was remembers to she's only at eighth grade and she's already big strong and physical there's a look at brian koz Griff and discussing things I think he felt that should have been an n1 situation there Woodson got to seem to get Hitler but you see six state titles twelve state tournaments had been runner-up to last few years they've been all I can't it's hard to really remember that many years where they weren't at least in the hunt a little bit I mean I went to Pitt man if they called that offensive fall and I think that's the right play by taking Adams but again I like letting him play like that and I think you reward a player going strong like that too a nice job by Jenna Johnson you know she was quiet too last time these two teams played that they need her to be aggressive and look to score but back to coach cosgrove he said 20 20th year coaching I looked at his record 535 at 67 I mean just that's Geno Auriemma like if you are just dominant he's been a terrific coach for this program happy birthday to Coach cows too by the way birthday today here's Schrader from the corner no good backers in traffic rebounds Becker's down the almost to travel almost a foul but they say play on both ways well I think that's an underrated part of her game has her rebounding ability in her laying down with us and really tall girl is able to get that rebound Olivia iron him back in the game for Wayzata Pass was a little behind her and it ends up being a tie-up that will go wise Etta's way Schrader T in bounds here her team down by four could better start going this one than they haven't on their home court and we're gonna get a foul on Stewart clearing out as Woodson was trying to deny our position and Stewart called for the offensive foul that's what ball pressure can do in denial defense like that Kentucky get that arm extended it's frustrating it's like swatting a bat away from you if you will and you know you just got to go right into the chest you can't extend that arm and if I might set it to against Hopkins I out of those out underneath out of out sideline out of bounds I'm trying to backdoor him to see if I can get something worn to the basket actors whipping it inside they look like nunu or Guerra was not quite ready for then it goes out of bounds it'll be why's that a basketball great vision there by Becker's well such a good pass at it surprised our team and that's where you got it when you're playing with a playmaker you've got to have your hands ready at all times traitor to bran aren't a bet down the baseline at it knocked away out of bounds better quick can't hop if you think you've got the bead on the dribble drive and they're coming from behind they're coming from the help defense that got really quick and you got to secure that ball put it out in front of you but either way I like what my Zetas do it they're not settling for jumpers they're attacking Hopkins right now off the off the dribble and I think that's giving them a lot of energy traitor getting an inbound of Johnson an offensive foul Johnson through that our mouth to push the defender away it wasn't when I watch that CEO she takes one dribble here and picks it up I'd like to see her continue that dribble and slowly try to back down she's not the length advantage on two colas there and again you picked that dribble up that pressure it's like a Madigan trying to just get it off you gotta be disciplined battle back out to coalesce a straight line to the hoop no good Nagi though the rebound hurt try what'd it go scramble for it here and another tie out this one a row Hopkins wait that's why you love high school basketball right plan for a chance to go to state girls diving on the floor great effort by by both teams and that's what's so fun about playoff basketball is a lot of these girls that are seniors know this is the last competitive game and they know that they understand that and they're going to give a 120% you see both both players from both teams doing that Adam is Kuchar colas muscling it in against smiley but nest and Johnson the rebound not abroad look for Callie Tyson goes up at Becker's no good Raider gets the rebound great hustle and the total bounds off freighters let go Becker's poked it away from her I was a nice drive to bite me me or excuse me by Tyson there she just didn't get her head up able to see the angle that she was at with great hustle by be nice trainer she's got to get that either go back up or get it out of there Becker is getting a high screen from Nagi now Johnson switches on to her Becker's a pull-up and that comes out straighter pushing it back the other way Braun will shoot it up from the lane at Short and smiley runs it down and there's a feeling that smiley could be a wild card in this one she was a starter earlier in the season and then they at the freshman brawn and it took over that spot smiley was injured but you know she kinda has the feel of somebody who could be an impact player tonight I think she's already impacted I can see we've seen her some great hustle play she's another ball handler gets pressured and bounded to Tyson looking a great space but blocked by Nagi two colas cut off battle swings it to peckers nice look over the atoms Oprah minutes in an hour great box-out to buy by jenna johnson their brawn looking to attack we short with the left hand tyson the lee boggs no good but she's foul do you see the difference with Tyson how she's battling tonight and even though she got her shot for octave I was tell peak kids so bud keep going out at that time watch her fight here nice chops by Brian here watch her step through that the pivot there kind of force up a tough shot but look at Tyson just fight for it that's why we highlighted her at the pregame and that's what she's come out done here and a big reason why it's only a three point game right now [Music] both teams expending a lot of energy early we got it stuck on 1410 for a while some empty trips and a lot of that has to do with good defense but also I think a little bit of you know a little bit of wind issues for both teams just because they've been growing so hard when I think too if it's a pace like this it's gonna favor Hopkins because they're used to playing fast like this Adams rebounds the air ball sometimes right place at the right time nobody was really ready for that one to miss the rim and Adams just start getting grabbed it and she's a great shooter too so I think getting off to an easy basket there could be big for her to coalesce attacks no girl but was foul Pulis just put so much pressure on her defense because she keeps coming and coming and coming and she's such a smart player do you see how she used her body but brought that ball way out wide almost making it impossible to block without falling great effort to buy broad the goal is 8 points already in this first half in and out with the free throw though [Applause] that'll will come back into the lineup here Becker's will give a presumably brief rest over there for our Hopkins [Music] [Applause] second free throw good socha colas gets one out of two six-point lead now biggest for the Royals greater inbounding to Braun and now to Tyson nice and had it knocked away from behind there without awful pacer [Applause] so another turnover force there Tyson can handle ball but you see [Applause] this is Raul it usually when it's you know although they have but it might hit a you know kind of a second time there I guess and even though I guess it's a call he goes again so you might not say this but I'm so glad we're not going to the monitor every little red lightning college basketball kind of being arraigned by that in some ways Becker's driving and scoring and Hopkins has opened up an eight point believe now take a look at the past history Wayzata after beating Hopkins in the semis went to the section final 2010 against Minneapolis South Mike that yes first year as he took over and I gotta tell you I remember those two games Wayzata was a huge underdog in both games the semis and then this one but boy they came through with some clutch plays they were sort of a team that has nothing to lose I want to say the playoffs they came in with 17 wins something like that and they came out on that still remains their only state tournament appearance in school history and they're trying to change that here tonight but some great memories for that guy and that you know you think to me 2010 doesn't seem that long ago but I suppose these girls were quite young at that time they don't remember it I'm sure well you got to figure they'd have quite a few more state tournament appearances that they not been in the same section as Hopkins all these years still right the coach Schumacher it looks pretty good for ten years difference looks great still doing a great job and I'll tell you that I remember watching those games to it and here at some of his quotes he's always a high-energy guy you know I saw your guys's great stories on CCX this week on both teams that you could tell just the respect that both of these coaches have for each other and the kind of programs they have was really evident well and I respect my shoe marker for not complaining about our in Hopkins section he said we just gotta beat them ya know I'm not saying it'll be easy but that's the way it is Nikolas gets the layup and right now Hopkins starting to really clamp down they're up ten and that pass was chipped it will be Wayzata basketball so one of the things that noticed seen against the press is they're thrown to the corner and no one's moving and that's where when you get trapped you gotta get it rid of it quick don't don't let it trap you grater and throwing a left hand pass and that ultimately leads our turnover Becker's to Cole they're starting to really create problem for Wayzata Tyson picks it up the double comes now smiley here's Johnson here's where you've got a score of Hopkins has that many people out high really going hard at double teams that's when you got to convert the other thing to is is is with the length you got to play through your Sprint's always J and you got height if you're Wayzata that's where you got to even have some of your taller girls gather that ball so they can look over the top you'll see it passes are hanging in the air that for Hopkins that plays those passing lanes man you got a got a ball fake gotta be hard and Chris passes and to your point you got to make them pay then when you do break it you got to be able to get a layup one thing that's really impressed me about Hopkins to those they'll throw a trap on and if Wayzata looks like they've made two good passes to get out of it Hopkins still just comes and traps again I mean it isn't like oh well they beat us we're gonna back off now they did just get back into position until another trap battle and they'll trap you at the half court too so you've got to always be aware of that trap what it does it just makes you play tentative and scared because you don't want to get embarrassed you don't want to get trapped if it's it's really hard to play aggressive and here's Braun a near steal their battle recovers it though 10-point game after the free throws by Jenna Johnson Becker's around Adams and now battle agarra Adams and here's Nagi looking to drive it at the hoop no good Stewart held her ground and they again continued to let them play there's some content but not gonna call every little thing and there's a pass that's behind Braun it's going to result in a battle attempt no good and the rebound yanked away shot partially blocked by a zagara took it up now Fredo to Stewart Stewart was fouled by Adams well this is this is where the time of game where this game could go two ways two down ten if you're wise edit can you get a couple of stops get up a couple of baskets make it really close or you always feel like Hopkins is on the verge of going on a eight Knoll run and really put this game out of reach early on so I think this is a really critical possession here if I my Zetas second foul on Adams social checkout contreras coming back in traders pass and it's another turnover you know we some have difficulties inbound aiming underneath out of bounds last time - there's got to be more movement you got to set screens for each other otherwise Hopkins defenders are just waiting for that ball and they are all over as far as denying the basketball backers down the middle little floater want to go Tyson grabs it well I'll tell you like it stops his huge obviously do not let him score but it also they're not allowed to get their press set up quite the same way there's another turnover backers jumping in the passing lane kind of altered that one in bronze pass goes into the bench and kind of a variety of Trojans have been guilty of really rushing things and and we get it it's tough Hopkins is as quick and it's good defensively as anybody you're gonna see well this is where meet nice Rainer really has to show her value as far as handling the basketball and getting her offense set up for her team backers the Miss Tyson tracks it down but she's trapped in the corner and was called for the travel and again I'd like to see Kalli plate all play big when she bends down like that it's hard for her to see it you need some of your strength that's when she's got to be able to go over the top and make that pass don't let yourself get trapped [Applause] ten point lead for the Royals as we check out the highlights from the regular season meetings between the two actually in the first game Wayzata got off to a great start they led the sixteen for early on but it was kind of the pate Becker's show when all was said and done and a three point win and then the second time around the game we I have to have CCX most of the night it was a struggle for a Wayzata they made some plays early on they stuck in there for a while but you see ultimately Hopkins really kind of pulled away and and dominated that game tonight one of the keys we talked about was taking care of the basketball I think early on Wayzata did a nice job that we've seen a number of turnovers here especially the last couple minutes and it's led to easy baskets for Hopkins and what they do Jay they feed off of that you just feel the energy the crowd gets into it and they get hungry and a hungry or wanting those steals and you got to be able to take that ball pressure and play at your pace you have to be able to do that otherwise Hopkins is going to win ten point lead for the Royals and they haven't been particularly hot from outside the night either Hopkins probably normally makes a few more of the jumpers at Becker's in particular but they've gotten enough easy who's here's Becker's dropping it over to colas fires and hits wow she's got a great first two as she has and how do you guard that Paige Becker is one of the best players in the country comes off that hard she draws a defender great job by to coalesce to just having her hands ready catching shoe great offense [Applause] and ciccolo says a way of getting shots up against bigger players that you think you know maybe would get blocked but she quick release and good form and she got ready to shoot and I like what I said it did there J I don't know if you saw that they got the ball into the middle of the court instead of allowing them to beat trap there's a tough tough drive Mike Tyson they're a good answer and a much needed basket Tyson going at the defender that game at her battle was interface so much I'm not sure if I was pacing in that spot I think an elbow to the tops might affect it might have been an or hurt there there's Becker's knocking down a nice jump shot she's so great she comes off of that hard one to dribble pull-up slip the mid-range it's really hard to contest it and she hits that about nine out of ten times till [Applause] five-second call one of the things he had just got to do is you can't pick your dribble up you've got to dribble with a purpose and then if you do pick it up you got to be able to get rid of it because what Hopkins does better than any other team in the state is when they see that dribble or pick it up there are full-out denial they have the speed the team speed to do that so a 12-point lead here for the Royals under five to go in our first half battle trying to dish it down low and it's gonna be out off of Hopkins is it kind of short hop to Guerra there a little bit turnover will give the ball to Wayzata yeah let's see plays head is able to do that again where they can get the ball into the middle of the court it's harder to trap when you're at the middle like that you don't have that sideline to use nice job Johnson bringing it up this time you mentioned last time to play the Hopkins has so many players that can be done the perimeter that it's hard to just say well we'll give it away from so-and-so and then we'll be fine Johnson the miss Santa Cruz grab the rebound well that was good offense Callie did a nice job that time oh nice block bran getting a piece of ciccolo shot there I am really disembark Ron how she plays remember - she's only a freshman she's been just fearless at all the meetings I've seen against Hopkins plays with a lot of confidence Smyly bringing it back up top now to bra his swing it side to side looking inside the Stuart but two colas frontin nice and cutting followed by becker Quetelet possessions in a role for Wayzata there's two colas run a nice job by bride avoiding not that getting there with the body just using their arms does a great job to get that block he's five foot eleven barbara has it she's got those long arms to fold at the end of freshman Tyson hits the free-throw see Nagi coming back in here for the Royals in Arabic back in for Wayzata and Tyson makes a pair and those are the kind of things knocking free-throws down you have to do when your plate gets off yet you get it trip to the line you gotta knock him down in that time Callie did a nice job of knocking boulders down [Applause] [Music] to the corner Becker's will shoot it up too strong at that one Nagi a nice rebound and then is fouled by Johnson he shoot threes you get a live long rebound I thought was that it was it pretty good position that time I want rebound ah she's got great legs on her own not only she get it but she possessed it just the quick quick buses there to go right back up it with the defender down the foul now that was a great job to you know go right at the basket I'm pretty much forced Johnson the Fowler there and I think both plant players on both teams have had to kind of times realize that you might get fouled and it might not be called that you still have to just get on the other thing you know keep it by two both of these teams are really good defensively and so there used to beYOU know you know get a rebound and do whatever they want against most kids but against the length of good sized really am both kids it you have to earn her baskets to get underneath the river she knocks down a pair of free throws for her first two points it's back to a 12 point lead now for the Royals Johnson will give it over to Braun three and a half to play in the first half Hopkins in control not least by Adams and a turnover Becker's ahead to two colas yeah looked like smiley got a piece of her arm but no go then it's knocked away scramble and Adams up with it backers whipping it down low to Chico us just couldn't quite make the catch is a good way to spot or even there well they they got a great chemistry with each other it seems like two colas knows right where to be and Paige is always looking for that was just a tad bit high Theisen coming out to get it now looking to attack against Nagi no good Becker's across atoms for three and that one's good remember KK Adams hit a couple threes in a row a couple weeks ago that was out of that time nice job by Paige Packers defense paint so much attention to her the Skip pass and able to fight KK he knocks it down boy Johnson almost traveled there he did need to see why's that a speedy enough to get on offense nice job by Bryan here to slow it down a little bit [Applause] nearly stolen out aren't about getting some trouble here or looking to go up against Tripoli snow good but was follow I was a great play by Arabic there she got good position and that Gaza follows to skip pass great vision by page backers and again she's so unselfish for such a great score she really is a phenomenal passer and kick Adams we've seen her catch fire over the years and she gets hot that's not a good thing if you're wise out of way unusual for modern basketball that's the first three of the night he's gonna say yeah there's aren't about hitting the free throw [Applause] not too often that you nearly get to halftime without a maid 3 between good teams [Applause] on a bet whether second free-throw and it is good so wise that has been solid up your line only one miss but it still hasn't really gotten them close to this one down by 13 coaching two minutes to play in the first half [Applause] becquer is spreading it out a little bit looks like they may want to make why's that it work a little bit defensively spread things out maybe is a little time to coalesce diving down the lane no good rebound fought for by Tyson and Nagi and they get a tie-up they believe it'll go why's it his way great after they get by both teams Pulis again great cut had a nice move just unable to get that one to fall Oh Miley pushing it ahead and bronze out ahead of the pack and lays it in that's what you got to do you got to put pressure back on Hopkins and that's what you do if you think it a couple of easy baskets like that the pressure tends to dissipate a little bit so you got to attack their pressure Becker's to Adams for three more now I was there trying to push it back on about Joshua though when she hits she's given them a nice mold of confidence she just looks fearless out there tool paint Kay Adams starting to heat up a couple of threes here I get nice driving kick by Tate Becker's setting it up 12-point game here Hopkins ahead Becker's a baseline tough layup is good great find my battle that's rule number one the ball dribbles at you you're being overplayed automatic backdoor and a great finish to 14-point Hopkins leads smiley now Tyson Braun looking under 40 to go now as smiley looks to attack and runner here bounces around a few times the turnout and vectors Arriba plane attacked that time by smiley and I think that's what you gotta try to do is make Hopkins guard you at defend you like that just not enough touch on that shot [Applause] Hopkins holding of a finger up for one shot here they're up 14 20 seconds to go to coalesce we'll get a breather and a Guerra comes in to replace her for the Royals this is where you look for Paige Becker's to come off the down screen they run this action quite a bit here it looks like she's gonna go get it maybe go off on the ball screen to try to go one for under 10 factors looking for atoms this time picked off by Schrader on a good read play there almost tripped up by Adams what a huge play content extent of Hopkins getting that the last shot may potentially get a two or a three you get a steal you're going to be shooting the bonus English radar here an opportunity that hits into two big free throws so the atoms just trying to catch up and kind of cook or heal obviously didn't go in into but get her for the third foul [Music] that was a nice job by baby straighter she kind of played the passing lane and that you know faked that pigfuckers got back at the land made a nice steel [Applause] three throws good first point of the night for freighter don't mean he wants to play really well tonight she was frustrated I think with the game a couple of weeks ago out Wayzata come out tonight two big free throws together t-mobile chair if Hopkins could go to go to template here looking for Becker's from half-court no off the backboard and so we reached halftime of this one and top seed Hopkins showing why they are undefeated bleeding Wayzata by a score of 37 to 25-year at halftime the Royal putting on some intense pressure through a good chunk of that first half and really giving the Trojans fits and everything every time Wayzata made a little run to make it seem like it was getting closer the Royals would would you know come back and kind of clamp down again here so they have that let's go over to Ryan coach once you think they're the first half a frantic pace and we did a poor job of getting to our pace we turned it over too many times but you know we're in the game and we're gonna battle one of the things I like that you did you started getting the ball into the middle of the court against their press to avoid the trap was that something you talked about there during one of those timeouts absolutely you know they they ran a couple different looks so sometimes they're trapped in the corner sometimes they're not so you got to be aware of what they're trying to do but poise and composure were the key when we got a little better with that we were fine when we weren't we're turning it over how fun is this plane in the section championship against Hopkins at Hopkins some Z's say the two best teams in the state I mean how much fun is this for you as a coach it's a blast more importantly it's a blast for the kids you know this is what it's all about this is why they sign up and pay their fee and you know put in all their time in the offseason this is what it's all about we showed a highlight of 2010 your first trip to the state tournament in your first year you look pretty pretty good after 10 years later you look almost the same hey appreciate it thanks a lot good luck in the second half coach back to you Jay thanks Ryan and thanks coach Schumacher it's a good one so far the Royals have the lead by a dozen as we rule when the first half here some great looks at some of the great action and we've had so far we'll be back with first-half highlights and more here on ccac's [Music] you'll have to be so strong strength is not optional this is my mother my purpose real muscle is lifting her spirits between bedpans and bad news from doctors that doubt her strength strength is buried and Bill's managing meds and swallowing those moments of mom it's me your daughter remember I strength is super but I'm still human right find support for your strength visit halftime of tonight's contest here at the Lindbergh Center the number one and number two teams in the state end and obviously in Section six as well here and only one can advance to that ste tournament as Hopkins with a lead of a dozen as we check out some first-half highlights in this one Callie Tyson thriving and attacking early on I had a couple of nice hoops for them in the early going well I thought she was aggressive and that was going to be a key and that was just a great hustle play a great pass Sobrato finished here kind of doing a little bit of what Hopkins is known for getting in that passing lane getting an easy layup and of course as I say that we segue the page Becker is play free safety pick it up on here for a touchdown going the other right took molas was tremendous in this first half to a little bit of everything we're gonna fight this is one of my favorite plays look at her battle the rebound rip it away weave in and out of about four defenders go in and finish is that that's just a classic two colas play of course the ability to shoot that's that bid range jump shot too Becker's getting it to the corner to Adams we said we went earlier half without any made threes until KK Adams so it will all change that here with a couple of them later I have I know Paige Becker's has 10 points right now as you'll see right there but I thought her impact was really distributing the ball she had a comfort of assistant to coalesce and to the most two threes to take KK Adam so her in fact offensively definitely be it felt yea big half for ciccolo Sarah 15 here's a look at the championship games in section 6 for 8 starting with back in the day when the tailor hill days at a South as they beat Hopkins Wayzata that we said that only section championship coming in 2010 an awful lot of Hopkins in the championship wins over the years and a couple of meetings with Wayzata and 2016-2017 first one wasn't very close second one was quite close last year everybody thought it was going to be this match up again but Wayzata did not get passed out from the semifinals and Hopkins up blitz them on the championship well he got 12 point lead J I think the first few minutes are really big for wise out of the stuff to have they can come out and kind of chip away at that get some momentum some confidence in there we could be in for a great ballgame or can go to the flip side where Hopkins gets a couple over the forces turnover is easy basket they could go to 20 points to it so first couple minutes are always huge to look at section 6 how things have shaped up to be honest some real lopsided game to the first round a couple of many way and one good one with a four five matchup with Park and Kennedy and then neither team of these have too much trouble in the semifinals and Hopkins in Wayzata course playing right now tonight we'll take a timeout here come back and hear from coach JavaScript in a moment in Hopkins leading Wayzata 37:25 in the section six for a title game [Music] because of you I felt hopeless I know it was a joke but it's still hurting because of you I feel wanted and not alone in this world because you say hi to me on the first day of school I felt included and I knew that I was going to be okay [Music] our hearts are made stronger about how we treat others what are their the light you share can impact those around you but so can the darkness later twerps did the saying mean things bother you so when you reach out to another person take a moment to consider how they will feel and let your heart be the key to making a difference because of you someone's entire day year or even life can change in every heart there's hope [Music] welcome back to the Limbourg Center let's go over to Ryan with Coach cosgrove hey coach one of the things we talked about pregame was the pace tonight who was going to control that you had to have liked that pace and in the first half plane was physical they were letting a lot go do you like that love it love it I think it's good for both teams I'll be guy the first couple of minutes here in the second half absolutely huge we got to get on we got to score right away and then stop are you having fun second half yeah back to you Jay and trying ahead thanks coach Koz grips he'll he'll say it was fun at the end of the night up there raising that section championship trophy out there right now during its that's a tense time a lot of pressure on I mean obviously there's a lot going for the the Hopkins program hint but uh a lot of pressure on them to I think whether you know that people expect them to win and they expect them to get some state tournament every year and that kind of quit true well I think I asked if he was having fun you got to be having fun you got to enjoy this but I think he's one of those that when it's over he'll have I as a competitor you love that Mike said I I absolutely adore watching him coach and seeing how intense he is and how competitive that his team to reflect that to and so on I thought that was an interesting answer that he couldn't admit to having fun yet but I bet did you know things go their way in about 25 30 minutes he'll he'll be having fun and I don't think there's anything wrong with having the mindset that winning matters do I mean there you get to the point now or sometimes you hear people you almost think like they're not not thinking that's a part of it when there's a scoreboard and there's a championship beyond well there's no question that Sports is bigger than just winning and losing right it's teaching even life lessons but this is competitive highly competitive basketball you're playing to win don't don't keep yourself and these girls don't put in all these hours of work on both sides to get second place or and I love that I was quite evident let's coach cosgrove there took backers downloaded two colas Wow now tell me you could have drawn up anything better coming out of half done than that if your Hopkins they look they run that action where they get paid coming off of a curl off of a down screen and it's really unguardable because she can elevate shoot so that time they help and at the last second she touches it off to two colas just a really hard play to defend Johnson back out Braun looking to Stuart Stuart irons and scores nice job and even that ball up high Nicole that's going to get it nice steal their buddy nice rate or two but I thought that time that was one of only times we've seen him at the half court where Wayzata under control they handled the pressure got a great high-low feed and Breanna Stewart gets a nice basket [Applause] inbound here for Schrader now they dump it inside Stewart turns shoot same doors again Annika Stewart a couple in a row here to a scoreless in the first half not anymore well they're making an effort to look for it she's getting great position and she's making a quick move but they keeping that ball up by beautiful Becker's have pull up in and out now she had the rebound lost it and it goes out off her foot Becker's did not shoot the ball especially well on that first half by her standards anyway still at ten points and that's a shot to again I don't think you can defend it you just hope that she doesn't make it at it fortunately for Wayzata she didn't oh this is yeah this is where Tyson's got to use that matchup feel to beat Nagi up the floor being a primary ball handler she did a nice job there and it kind of gives her guards a little bit more rest till knocked away from Tyson another turnover ahead to two colas no good knocked loose a fight for the rebound here and we'll have a tie uphill ball goes favor of the Trojans Woodson will check in and Nagi out here for Hopkins [Applause] [Music] [Applause] yeah they're gonna get Mya battle they're just reaching across that line interesting - they got Mimi Schrader passing the ball in bounty but rather than being one of the the pass catchers out of it a lot of times if you have a ball handler passing they look for her to step in and receive it back I'll tell you what really adds to the pressure on that - is that those bleachers right behind the court you don't have a whole lot of room to it - good space to pass that low and when you feel like your space is kind of closing down on you know keep it certainly add to that intensity nope no doubt and obviously in that type of spot Raider was not you know he couldn't run the baseline like you could after me Oh Adams finding Woodson all alone just did a great job drawing the defense and dropping it off you just you love the unselfishness of Hopkins [Applause] Tyson Johnson and now Stewart will shoot a three and it's good Stewart coming alive here all seven points for the Trojans in the second half he could tell she's playing confidently she stepped into that shot you knew right when it left it was going in she's three for three here at the second half and they need her scoring and her aggressiveness Trojans to within nine backers with the cod in the layout she's got those big straw strides in those long arms she doesn't even need a dribble she's able to get all the way to the rim with the finger roll I have the Johnson layup good you love Hawaii Etta's attacking here in the second half they are going over the top and then when they beat that initial pressure they have an advantage and so far they're taking advantage of it the problem is you got to get stops on this side of the Florida to be able to make up some of that deficit backers with it Alley Tyson's been defending her all game now Woodson with it for the high ball screen back hoes turns the corner finds two : for the layout I know we don't track a sister in the game but she's got to have seven eight assists already here in this game she's doing a nice job of being unselfish Schrader over to Johnson a nice power dribble for the layup that's Nene Schrader to a team right beaten that press going 100 miles an hour heads up eyes at the back of her head dropping a dime beautiful play Adams shot spins out as head of the rebound they're showing signs of life here for sure down by nine down low to Stuart oh and factors with a huge block Woodson back the other way Wow how is that being consistent on both sides are letting them play how about Bates backers coming over from help side there Breanna Stewart with great position I thought she did everything right she kept her excuse me Annika Stewart I keep saying Breanna Stewart I think of the WNBA player but inside there and here stewards had hit the floor very hard just fighting for a loose ball in her head bounce back onto the court that happened right kind of in front of where we're sitting here good help defense great effort by both players are right there ah I hate seeing that so they're gonna bring her off and probably do the first and foremost for her you hope she's okay secondly from a basketball perspective she's been really aggressive and played well here to start the second 1/2 so it's a big loss for Wayzata but you certainly hope it's nothing bad that she's okay they go to Nagi inside and that's hot partially block and coach husband saying I liked the physical game but come on I gotta call something brawn looking inside to Johnson and knocked away from her Becker's pushes it back the other direction backers in and out with that one and rebound the Schrader's stolen my Becker poked away from her by Tyson and now Smyly up with that the pace is definitely hasn't slowed down here it stuck the second half later downloaded Johnson Oh God about a foul I was about to say great recovery by a guard there if they're gonna blow the whistle I'll tell you you I said is not doing anything wrong down low I just think Hopkins warms the ball so well help side there's hands coming at you you bring that ball down just for a second J and they're gonna get a hand on it and steal it Johnson amiss on the free throw you know and on the flip side tool I mean wise Evans played tremendous defense therefore said Becker's into some tough angles on that transition they're challenging every shot I think we're seeing two really good defensive performances tonight by both games closest Wayzata has been for quite some time eight-point game now 45 37 [Applause] [Music] baseline feed Nagi steps back in the Olson jumper you know if you ask my Zetas what do we want to give up I think they'd say at nagi mid-range jump shot and to her credit she took what the defense gave her and she knocked it down and that's what Hopkins so hard to defend that's why the average 84 points per game because they got a number of girls that could step up and make shots Ron's pass deflected nearly stolen there by battle and those cross-court passes like that that hang in the air you should see my battles eyes just light up at page backers when they get those passing lanes say that's like a steak dinner for they get they see it they know they go the other direction for a layup that's the thing when you have it's hard to prepare for you know what Hopkins does so because a lot of these passes against 90% of your opponent's at least would get through and be fine there's a pull-off feta 3 is good for bran Ron did her part knocking it down but that was made really because Nene Schrader got dribble penetration great pass in the baseline and a nice second pass you give up a good chat for a great shot and it gets knocked down by Marv Bron big-time shot seven point game Wayzata really feeling confident again now two colas trying to go to Hajime turn it over him there maybe one of the first time tonight Hopkins looks a little disjointed nice job by smiley she had a good shot that recognizing her teammate had an even better shot and see confident right there getting excited as my Zetas got it down to seven it could be a big possession here if they're able to score Johnson is fouled by two colas who thought you have the Queen stealer I really feel like wait other needs to do more of that and they all you if they're going to be that aggressive at you you just drive it right at them and then might maybe you don't get to call but you've gotta at least make them respect you trip on if they don't think you have the ability to go buy them the ball pressure gets even more intense so if you can attack them once or twice you don't have to be successful every time and if you can do it you'll get some of that ball pressure off you go Tyson loses the hand is tied up it'll stay with Wayzata [Applause] when Stewart is able to come back yeah I just say I hate seeing those head injuries and he hit the floor I've been there I've done that I know what that feels like so so glad to see that she's back pound is smiley now Stewart mass deflected and stolen and then they get a foul on smiley coming back up for Dan Becker's goes down hard Decker's feeling that one had looked like a shoulder they look smiley trying to come in from the side and then got flipped up nothing to tential their great effort by both sides at the right ball good to see page vectors concept seriously [Applause] battle back dope astral Becker's rips it away from Tyson short with it they're taking letting them way to a new level here I'll tell you one I don't pay to miss that shot but did you see the catch she had to go over the top of cally ty sit there and one hand that ball that was just a beautiful catch even though she didn't score that was a heck of an athletic play Tyson bringing it up backers went to the steal almost had it inside to Stuart and in and out out of bounds off Hopkins it'll stay Wayzata ball Trojans have closed the gap to seven right now at 47 40 well even though Stuart missed that was the right place she's getting great position underneath download she's keeping that ball high she's getting good shots down there by my Zetas I continue to do that high low all year long Kelly Tyson Jenna Johnson and Annika Stewart have done a nice job of playing high-low they got to continue to do it here's Johnson she's got a hook to score that one Smyly for three bounces out rebound Tyson nice all over the Johnson and was fouled as Adams will pick up her fourth it was a great pass to smiley who got a good look but I think Wayzata needs Jenna Johnson if she gets that ball five feet from the basket to be aggressive and look to score that's just a great great offensive rebound that time they taste it look at to Johnson probably not a bad fall otherwise it might have been a layup even though that's gonna be the fourth I'm KK Anna Schrader inbounding there Stewart had a block by two colas jump ball how good is to call us the given hub the good six seven inches underneath able to just be physical and able to get her hands on that ball [Applause] what do they say it's not the size of the dog in the fight it's the size of the fight at the guide download shkolu says smile on her and what do we have here than be a foul against the defenses smiley will pick it up we're two colas walked eventually but I went to follow may have been called before that you said it earlier alright I think smiling giving them some toughness at some energy tonight off the bench for was that Becker's for three units gone [Applause] tonight really her her first long outside perimeter jump shot that was nothing but that big shot and Wayzata merely turns it over back to a ten-point game now on that three by Becker's Tyson back to Braun should set up by Tyson getting into the paint collapsing the defense and a great job by Braun finding the open and she kept moving and she's starting to shoot with confidence to her second three backers blows by Tyson right there nice and extended a little player is gonna say she's have tend to bring the ball up against pressure drive score rebound and also try to defend backers not an easy Schrader's picks up the dribble in a tough spot Tyson it will stay with Wayzata they're a little bit fortunate there in the prompt to push Schumacher had to use three timeouts at the first half so he's only got two left so you don't necessarily want to utilize a timeout right now and you also don't want to get Tyson off the floor she's such a leader for but she may need that just a 30 second break Johnson over to Braun Hopkins by 9 but wise edits going back into this one early in the second half Stewart looking to go against to coalesce as she hits another what a great job by Tyson she saw fades ventures on the help side defense she looked like she was going to bring the ball up and kind of reset it went right back to Stewart he just turned and caught it he's in her height she's been really good nine points in the second round backers for [Applause] those two that she just made hasn't even hit the rim there's peckers of the block but it'll be a foul call those Ron Kovic suckers pumped up trying to get the Royals fans a little pumped up the ground [Applause] and I think to her last drive to the basket I think that got Cali paisa back peddling a little bit gave her a little bit too much space and I'll tell you that's why she's so hard to guard because if she could shoot like that and she's got that quick first step you basically have to pick your poison how do you what do you want to give up if she's not get those down consistory she's virtually our smiley comes back in and Tyson the coach recognize what we did that she's just too ass right now free-throw good on the second for Mara Braun c2 I thought maybe today we teeth why Sarah that played a little bit of zone in that second game maybe just fixing it up especially now that Paige backers seem to have a rhythm try anything you can possibly to get her out of that little battle nice pull-up jumper from the baseline her first basket of the night lead is back to 11 Smyly who Stewart had to really reach for that one Stewart looking inside Johnson missed with the left hand and rebound grabbed by Woodson he's of mine to jc's an eighth-grader the rebound goes coast to coast the chance for the three-point play that's a big-time play by a big-time player [Applause] I never hesitated just nice job protecting the ball did everything right there that's how it going up strong does that if you're smiley that's where if you're going to follow you got to make sure they don't get that shot off you don't want to give up an ant one make up her head to the free-throw line so Hopkins surging back up by 13 make it 14 have they taken Mizell his best shot and now I'm going to pull away or is Wayzata still got more to come back smiley looking inside to Tyson backed out Stewart oh shoot a three but no vectors up for the board he might not come back to win this game that I think wise editors there's a ton of credit for how they play defensively in the second half they're getting shots they're not turning the ball they're being aggressive I really like the adjustments that they've made they can roll Becker's future colas missed it but Nagi puts it back [Applause] great pick-and-roll great pass to pull us at the rear of Miss and Nagi did a great job she caught that in one motion went up with her left hand two beautiful play cross-court Tyson for a three and its core that's but she can make them took the time how does a great release their I've nothing but that but if you're a Jedi right now you laughing whooping now we look up and we still on 13 and that's got to be a little deflating six minutes 30-plus seconds left you don't gotta get a 13 point play just gotta win every possession went two points a minute you're right back in the game battle wins it back out top here and Ron got a piece of that one but it will stay with Hopkins I'll tell you Braun's weren't really active defensively tonight she's done a nice job she's been really the one gal the southeast Raider get one but she's consistently been playing those passing lanes get deflection to the tips when you see the number of knotty seniors in this game we're gonna probably see these teams playing them some high-stakes games the next couple years too traitor into the frontcourt Wayzata needs to be efficient down 13 Hopkins fans thought that was a double dribble now cross to Tyson no good rebound Becker's was fouled by Jenna Johnson safe shot she just made a minute ago I like Jenna Johnson be an aggressive long for that rebound Bates records with great position and you know the game always comes back to fundamentals boxing out dribbling passing shooting the state vectors does that as well as anybody a couple years ago these met in the essentially championship Minneapolis Roosevelt was the site for a couple of years and and Becker's younger but still a great player at that time and Wayzata though had a really good night jasmine smiley was on fire and in fact the Trojans that have a lead for a large chunk of that game I was never doing that game and I remember thinking you know Hopkins was dominant that year all year long and Rosetta was up the plaint grades and Hopkins just kind of had one of those surges least a half where they go on a 10th old 12 old run took control of it but that was a great game and you know tonight you know it's a 13-point game but I really feel like both teams that played well it's been a well-played game and fun to watch and fun to see so much talent on both sides out on the floor and to your point so much it is underclassmen had this is a great experience for them both teams should be equally as good if not better again next year so you might Schumacher right now you have to stay just as intense as they baman and not get discouraged when there's a little bit of a run by hopping through I mean it's tough not to but they you know they're a veteran team even though they're you have a lot of youth they also have a lot of players you've played a lot of basketball and they know there's going to be surges back and forth but got to keep coming keep bringing well I think it's gonna come down to Wayzata for defense they got to get stops you got to find a way to string together a couple of stops at a time [Applause] Hopkins does a nice job of spacing the floor here too so if you know they they can take some time off the clock if they need to or want to they're not necessarily looking to do that yet but their team that's tough to trap other players do such a nice job to a playing off of blades buckles going where to get and where their sweet spots aren't she's unselfish enough where she'll find them and you can tell they believe that they'll get the ball so that the space even five girls that could all make a play that's what makes it so tough to guard backers open to the three more slow-start is a distant memory now she said three of them three threes here at the second half we get your ass good calli Tyson to chase her around that touch she faded off the screen it just got an easy look Johnson over to Stewart way too strong with that one 16 point lead for Hopkins it wasn't that long ago that was a tad whittled it to seven on Hopkins could duplicate that last possession where they can take 34 to second top and then end up getting a great shot out of it they'll take that you know if you're wise Eddie you start thinking about potentially trapping in trying to bring some pressure and see if you can't force it turnovers [Music] Najee with it now back up top and traitor thigh hold on purpose there look like as Woodsen made the catch think they're fueling maybe they need to get to the scheme this morning yeah but what I would do is rather than just give the Fallas try to get a steal trying to get a trap out of it [Applause] battle limb bound on the sidelines here gets it into Nagi Becker's open for another three this time no good rebounded by Braun Braun they'll go all the way but missed it is he's bothered by ciccolo said we're gonna traveling Paul his battle fell on the ground with the ball nice shot by Brock long rebound she just took off great speed but Chiklis again just enough where it irritates you off the finish and that it will to get the look on it Ron arm backers cuts in front for the steel backers will roll all the way and followed by Stuart that was a great defensive play that was an excellent play call by coach Schumacher really well designed and brought had a wide-open lamp page Rutgers came up with for garel in the corner on the weak side and slit front of that got the steal and then just recognize that Annika Stewart was back at me she could beat her doula to the basket this is a really really smart high basketball IQ play we throw is in and out yeah that's kind of a two-parter for Becker's first of all most players wouldn't recognize it but second of all bottom would've had the speed to go intercept that pass cleanly maybe get a tip or something but she just grabbed it right away [Music] agarra we'll come back in here for the Royals 23 on the night for Paige Becker's but misses a pair here however the Royals get it back you don't see her face consecutive free throws very often traitor got a piece of that one the battle gets it back timeout Hopkins that kickers will take along three late so a 352 to go Hopkins leading at 65 49 [Applause] and see a lot of heavy breathing in both Huddle's here it's a player that just worked so hard tonight all night long I thought the effort of just the pieces but just not stop right from the tip and both teams I think are going to be exhausted after this Warren you know we've talked about it and people weep there's you know I've read articles about it that kind of fortunate you get the top 20 and this seems like more like a state championship level game but unfortunately one of these teams is gonna have to go home tonight but I think win or lose both teams could be very proud of the effort the intensity the energy that they've played with tonight [Applause] it will be interesting to see I know a lot of approaches seemingly that boy said it murdered but really pushing for an NCAA German style tournament with you know 64 you know teams rather than having section quite right I don't know it'll be interesting to see if that takes place yeah to me to a certain extent a rivalry game like this is possibly more exciting than if you have you know set up for an hour yeah but but I definitely see both sides of it I think I said it there they had the ball in the corner I think they got to look to trap right now I think they got to try to get some steals and turnovers put by a battle at the free-throw line she's a 69% free-throw shooter so kind of not a bad free-throw shooter misses at Oh Tyson will grab the rebound picks up her dribble now get such a Schrader we're on over to Johnson now Tyson down the middle sleeping in with the left hand no good Nagi had the rebound Tyson grabs it back at his bow wow this great effort by Cali Tyson great sweeping left move didn't quite get it to fall but just relentless work ethic goes after it able to draw the foul here for two free throws follow one against Nagi Tyson will shoot free throws hips let's see out of it maybe a made free throw here Wayzata is able to pick up full court and try to get some pressure on Hopkins [Music] [Applause] Taysom makes a pair adams will come back in now for the Royals and then Wayzata is indeed lining up to come with so the pressure levels have to at this point right I mean even though it's possibility it may lead to some easy hoops the other way you at least have to try something absolutely coach Cosgrove smart sub takes out Nagi and gets it KK Adams who's allowed it's it much better free-throw shooter to battle attacks and it's the layup well there it might impede the some opening for the Royals and it did right there well you talked about it earlier Jay they have such good Spacey that if they're able to beat the one-on-one matchup they could get white you know to the basket relatively easy that was just a really nice move by battle 16-point Hopkins lead looks like they're gonna return through the state tournament backers deflecting that on it comes up with the steal and then is in trouble in the corner so she calls a timeout well get paint backers I think tonight the two things that have really stood out or want her ability to pass of all create shots for teammates but to how great she is defensively as far as her health and her anticipation again that ball is going onto the pole she came from the weak side anticipated it got to steal and good hustle to go get it call timeout recognize that she was in trouble [Music] this game is so big that both fans are here the Hopkins and the Wayzata ban on for this contest along with a packed house here folks up along the Bell as well just a great atmosphere these section final games are so much fun there's so much at stake that you know I was fortunate J to lick two state titles of football and I still think maybe my greatest memory was as a software winning the section finals against Hopkins to go to see the basketball it's just such a great feeling that you work all season for that chance to go to the state tournament and the Ladas on the line you can see great crowd two teams giving it their all to colos will win bound here for the Royals her team up 16 and a quick foul taken by smiley there's the inbound of the Woodsen well I said I said it did a great job they were denying Becker's night deny it you know the free-throw shooters the ball they four stood it they have to go into what's in it and make her dance with the free-throw line 68% free-throw shooter from attended tonight fourth foul on Jasmine smiley but that's kind of irrelevant at this point you have to have to do what it takes to get get the Royals to the line here strategy pays off as they messed up smiley with the rebound here for Wayzata and we're gonna reach in or a bump any way against Woodson her third [Music] [Applause] braum looking down load of stewart tried to take it up inside but beggars is able to rip it away and we'll get a foul call against Stewart well that's for Hopkins I think you got to give them a ton of credit how do you to overcome the length that Wayzata has well you gotta have great help that you can't and again every time that balls count on Lowell advice that is not able to just catch it go right up if they've just held it for a second Hopkins has just swarmed up and you just see their hands or active hands [Applause] juh colas hits the free-throw she had a real hot start to this one little quiet around second half but not a bad game at all with 20 points well she got her team off to a great great start second one also good [Applause] and an 18 point lead here for Hopkins looks like they will stay undefeated and get back into that state tournament Bron giving it to Tyson Tyson down the lane layup it's good nice job handling the pressure that type of great cut by Tyson and she gets a pretty easy layup nice pass battle across and looks a little good battle comes out of there with it [Applause] $56 dependents in tonight at hours right now to follow but overall a game where it's not tightly called is good for Hopkins oh it even though individual calls may hook and not his way I think he's overall happy with that part is followed by Stewart by the way yeah when she had a great second half here I got out got Wayzata I came back into this game with a couple of her big shots there to start the half but I asked coach cosgrove at half field you like that so he said absolutely so to your point I think that probably favors the aggressive style of deep thoughts of Hopkins but at one thing I like the ref reason but consistent on both sides and that's what you want if you're gonna have you know games where they call tighter or looser for as long as they're doing a fair and even for both teams that's that's all this keep in mind to this 71 points that's the most that Hopkins is scored against Wayzata this year there's still two minutes left so offensively there's that really productive here today Tyson fakes drives and scores off the glass the Creek job of moving to our left and finish it avoiding the charge there I think she's played her butt off tonight really had a had a tough game she's had a good game she was been aggressive look at her sight stepdad nice job by Chipola stuff it in there but I was a great left-handed finish by the seat here [Applause] now not a lot of players who are quote unquote a post player frontcourt player would probably relish a challenge of chasing page vectors around and niceand did a pretty good job over for a while got a little bit tired and Becker's I think Becker's you know it's so smart about knowing when opportunities are there that she kind of waited you know let things settle down and miss some shots in the first half but that one I think the great player has to be whatever your team needs at that at that time it though she scored here ten five points in the first half but I thought she you know she could drive and kick and she felt TK Adams got a couple of good threes she got Chiklis going early on at that second half with the game guys a little bit closer is when she kind of started it and scored more and being more aggressive that she's just done a nice job again defensively I think there's really been the strong part of her game that I just a number of skills [Music] two colas getting it into Becker's here it's a return pass and up to sideline show come I'm not looking to attack this gonna bring it back out and try and eat some time line and smiley will foul to pull us in that'll be number jazmine smiley [Applause] so if she will join Stewart in fouling out our Novak comes back yeah Chiklis was red-hot early and looks like she's been hot at the line to try and close things out here is wrong I'm never gonna view in there after the last Hopkins lays out a gate there at the regular season and I kind of asked her you know you do a little bit of everything well how do you go she's like I'll do whatever my team needs whether it's toughness rebound score II kind of being that aggressive you know cold setter for the night she just does a little bit of everything she's just that relentless play our complete player for the steam 18 point lead under a minute half to go so a tremendous season for Wayzata is going to end here their third loss in three games against Hopkins blow up here by Jenna Johnson oh good bran grab to rebound floors out there the foul as well let's say it was a big fat play [Applause] that was a great rebound she stepped through two defenders that able to finish I think she's got a really bright future watch her toughness rebounded and steps through battle will pick up the foul she's got sixteen points tonight in to give only a freshman forgetting this experience in this kind of an atmosphere this kind of a game she's only going to grow from it [Music] [Applause] [Music] Tyson will pick up the foul here and Becker's to the free-throw line [Applause] first one rolls home footage [Applause] and she makes a pair here so Hopkins up to 75 58 years we approach a minute to go in this one traitor to bran that won his race short records out of there with it that was flipping it ahead to Adams for the layout what a pass I didn't think she saw KK Adams on front she was looking towards a sideline a left-handed whip right over to KK who finishes that was a beautiful pass Ron over the Tyson she'll drive it down the lane and score two more under 35 seconds to go though and the Royals are gonna win this one improve to 29 and all their fans on their feet owes Becker's maybe gonna dribble you got nothing to hate your head about if your Wayzata your three losses out of the year all the one team the best team in the state right now and hopped it got a great effort great career for Cali Tyson it's going to come to a head my what a foot game on a wall play game I thought by both teams [Music] well I think if your half gets to do you're going to the state tournament with a ton of confidence knowing you you just beat this the number-two ranked team in the States are you Pete anybody and they handle them pretty it's a really good basketball team a really complete basketball team they got that great combination of size length athleticism [Music] can create a shot at any time I wonder if coach Carr's burgers have a cut now I think I look on his face said yes absolutely you know in a lot of ways for teams sometimes the section finals almost more pressure than the state tournament in some ways I think there's an intimacy to about playing at your home gym right when you go to the Target Center or Williams Arena even though you have a lot of fans there it seems dead because there are such big arenas and you know you're not used to shoot in that type of an arena and a lot of fun what a great feeling for the Hopkins players coaches their fans and parents and I get hats off to a wonderful season for the trophy a lot of their key players will be back next year for Wayzata but obviously the graduates and seniors you think that particularly of Tyson and Amy Schrader there and a couple others to that tonight the last night they'll put on the Wayzata Jersey so hats off to them you know not only for a great season this year but just straight careers within the program and obviously when you play Hopkins you know you might move you don't want to think that way but you know it's a possibility and so it kind of sets in that you know that this was gonna be a tough one well how could this beatable but you got to do a couple things you got a you got to not turn the ball over you got to shoot well and you know you've got to be able to just utilize your strengths that I I didn't think Wayzata did that tonight and that's why it was a 17-point game but Amy Schrader of course is senior - we played her last game in high school she's not only been a wonderful point guard but just a wonderful person - you guys did a great story on her earlier in the earth [Applause] so is a tough part for wide of smiles as you see on one side he sees years of the heartbreak on the other side didn't and that's for so for you what the thing is too is even for the upperclassmen they're gonna come back they're gonna get another chance but this team is done right this group of girls and all the bus rides at the hotel stays if you go out of town at all and the pasta dinners and then practices and you build such camaraderie that even though they'll be back it'll be a boo team next year this team is now gone today there's a fine of finality to that that could be really emotional [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] let's not forget that you know Wayzata girls basketball over the years has not necessarily always been at this high of a level a bit pocket here and there but you know it isn't a year in year and thing a year in year out thing to be a top three top five teams historically in their program so what they've done these last few years has been kind of you know a precedent set it really became a coach Schumacher has done a great job of building the youth program my daughter plays fourth grade and you look at every youth basketball tournament Wayzata is always at the championship game winner or taking second so they got a lot of talent he's built a nice program I think they're here to stay you know you never know how kids are gonna develop but they've turned into a really nice program and coach Schumacher quick via classier guy as well [Music] [Applause] and Hopkins about to receive their medals after Wayzata gets the runner-up trophy for section 6 for a fee me Sherwood the feta corrector at I set up presenting that and he and Dan Johnson the Hopkins ADR really been great you know for their programs overall but even just statewide they've both been part of the high school League Board of Directors at times as well and just have had a lot of influence in you know making high school sports as good as they can be for the kids in their respective schools and their conference and ultimately in the state [Applause] and you talked about it on 404 Wayzata it being the one that they're you know their season comes to an ambulance every year is a new year for hopkins - you didn't say well maybe it's not as exciting because they've been their last couple years just exciting absent worthless this is a new year a new opportunity and quite honestly quite a few years they weren't necessarily playing a team that was likely to give them a game or hit them and where this year you've done a little bit and keep in mind too that everyone thinks they do they have been dominant for a long time but their last state championship of 2000 2015 so it's been a few years so I think there's a hunger inside of them that hey we're tired of being the number one team all year long and not capturing the state championship so I thought the difference this year between other years as they played they played like it every game go slowly they were competitive and they got a chip on their shoulder when you got talent and hunger and passion and a chip on your shoulder all combined that's when you got a dangerous team and they play strong enough defense etienne I'm not nights they don't shoot the ball well they're laughs a little very much in the possibility of winning well they average 84 points on offense which is is extremely high but they only give up 49 on the year so their defenses is a big reason why there there ought to be did it right number one coach Josh Griffin his staff really work hard themselves they work the kids really hard there's no no room for pouting in their program you're gonna get yelled at some and you're gonna be worked hard but it pays off the other thing - I think that goes you know not talked about as much as how good a shape Hopkins is if they play that full course you know intense chaotic pace if they don't get tired that they still executed they're able to do it for the whole game every game so I know their practices are hard I know condition II there's a big component of the success and it shows [Music] so the Hopkins Royals pumped up and headed to the state tournament where they will be the top seed I feel very confident in saying that with the record that they put together we'll take the time off come back and hear from the Royals in just a moment you're watching the section six for a final on CC explores [Music] operation waterpark is a gal there's nothing more powerful than imagination honey if you see myself huh but don't just imagine let Park keep the light ooh a plot twist you stand to build create and change the world if she can stem so can you find out more at she can stem a beer hi do you think you're probably sober yeah but you're thinking about taking the backroads home just in case if you're probably sober then why would you do that [Music] [Applause] good choice probably okay isn't okay if you see a warning sign stop and call a cab a car or a friend that's a full glass of wine I'll be chatting you later welcome back to the Lindbergh Center Hopkins over Wayzata 77 60 in the section six girls championship let's go over now to Ryan to his with Kate Becker well I'm with a very happy Paige Becker's Paige it was a dogfight tonight really physical game what were your thoughts I think Holly played out I thought it played out really well I mean we executed our game plan really well they scored 60 points I was just a lot against you guys exactly but just that they're really big and they use that to their advantage and we tried to make the pace of the game we try to dictate that and we did that pretty good so I like that again I thought the pace was definitely in your favor they obviously have the height and the length advantage I thought the most underrated part of tonight's game was your defense help side defense coming over getting a lot of steals was that something you knew that you were gonna have to be active in that regard yeah exactly they're big they have that advantage on us but I try to set the stage for these younger kids that we got to work and it starts on defense personally my shots weren't falling tonight but there's so much more you can do than hit shots and defensively I'm just trying to set the tone what are you doing missing two free throws in a row - no I don't know what's going on how fun is this environment here you're playing against a closed rival you've played on the further the third time the night in your home building you got a great crowd I mean how much fun is this playing basketball in the section championship it's so fun like this is what I live for obviously I like the home court advantage that nud a little rule this year but it's awesome just playing in front of this amazing crowd and just to get out of here what the dub is great how excited are you for the state tournament what do you guys have to do now to get ready you take the emotion of tonight being happy and celebrating but then getting ready because you still have an ultimate goal that you want to accomplish you know obviously just getting better in practice and not getting complacent there's been a lot of noise about this is the state championship game but our girls we don't think that we've been there the past three years and we lost three years in a row so we know it's not over until it's over so we got to go get those three wins can you you know for CCX viewers I would love to see you versus delaila to coalesce one on one do you guys ever do that in practice cuz I think that'd be a really fun matchup sometimes a little games at 21 I bust them up every time but I don't know I never play late 101 but I'm sure one be close well congratulations on a really fun night good luck the rest of the way thank you good job Paige all right back to you Jay thanks very much Ryan a 7760 victory here for Hopkins tonight over Wayzata again congratulations with Trojans on a great season but they'll end up with a section final loss while Hopkins moves on to the state tournament as Paige said they've been close the last three years and this year hungry for a championship they are not looking at this as the state champion if they know they got three more opponents to try and get through they'll be headed to Williams Arena the site this year Target Center and use for something else so in the William green will be the site 7760 Royals is the final we hope you've enjoyed tonight's theme from the Lindbergh Center here at CC exports for Ryan Iverson and all of our crew MJ Wilcox good night from Hopkins you [Music]
