hey guys welcome back so i'm going to do a quick flip through through primary mathematics 3a and 3b also known as singapore math for us old heads can't let go of the old term so i'm going to flip through the textbook the workbook and the test so you're going to get all of that and i'm going to do it for 3a normally your first semester and 3b normally your second semester depends on you okay so we're going gonna start the flip through now okay so for so for the standards edition primary mathematics they talk about the concrete pictorial abstract approach so you can read that to to learn more about the basis of this curriculum and they just go over all the little um key points that you'll see throughout the book so you know you know what everything means the color patches um the big yellow squares that you'll be seeing the metacognition the modeling method with the rods so all of that and then there's a glossary in the back and this is the table of contents okay so we have we have 5 units in 3a okay numbers addition and subtraction multiplication multiplication table 6789 and then data analysis and then your review okay so that's the overview for 3a and textbook looks like it's very colorful lots of colors you know i was kind of hesitant to pull these out because they're kind of marked in it because sometimes my kid forgets that it's the textbook but let me pull out a bit but i just want you to just to see okay now eventually you'll be using some rods but as you can see um you can i want you to see how the problems are presented all the colors it's not text heavy there aren't a lot of problems per page until you get to the review or the practice the practice is like the review okay and the practices are labeled a through whatever letter it ends with okay one thing that i do like with um primary mathematics they do have reviews they have spiral reviews built in and then here's your review you can just make a photocopy of this if you wanted to if you have more kids so 14 problems for the review that's the last review of this book so there you go i just want you guys just to see what it's all about see how the questions are answered i mean how the questions are presented lots of word problems especially when you're doing the practice parts like here you have lots lots of lots of exposure to word problem okay so now i have the workbook 3a workbook for standards edition primary mathematics so let me just show you how it all lines up the workbook we didn't use that much because with my third child i was like it's overkill and we were already doing beast academy all right so table of contents the workbook is in white the textbook is in yellow so numbers to ten thousand you have three lessons and here you have seven exercises you have your review here you have your review here then you go to unit two addition and subtraction you have seven uh objectives i should say in that unit and you have 10 i think there's more you have 16 exercises and then the review okay and then you have multiplication and division and 15 exercises in the the workbook and then your five uh objectives in that unit and then moving on to four multiplication tables six seven eight and nine here are all your objectives and here are your exercises so this can be um i would recommend i would recommend the workbook just so number one your child's not really writing in the textbook and number two just to give them some more opportunities to practice i didn't use this because by then my children were also using beast academy so it was kind of overkill but i would definitely recommend the workbook just so your child can get more practice i don't think there are enough less enough problems in the textbook to give your child enough practice with um the new objectives they've learned and then you have data analysis and just six exercises and then the review so let me just show you what um chapter or unit 1 looks like okay so base 10 blocks lots of pictures illustrations not too wordy here's exercise two i like how they do bold um text for you know to help you know guide your child so they can start being aware of the vocabulary that's exercise three exercise four and look at the variety of the exercises that are given okay it's not just the same old same old uh you know how like the kumon books are not trying to hate on kumon but everything is the same it's the same it's the same so a lot of this information is presented in lots of different ways in graph or chart form in word problem form in line graph form and here's your review right here okay here's your review then exercise one starts unit two so that is 3a textbook and workbook and the home instructor's guide let's move over to this video was long let's move over to 3b oh and guys this video was so long but here's the test i never really used a test i think i used used them once the first week and then that was it so for the test uh you have test day test day and test b uh test day is more involved a lot of open open-ended um problems right so it's more writing and then test b is just multiple choice okay and you can decide you know throughout the course of the year some weeks you try you you just left your child was struggling with something you might want to give them this just to help them out and then go back and review some stuff or if you want to give your child more of a challenge then do test day okay it's more open-ended okay so i'll go to unit two and then um i'll wrap it up and then you have your cumulative test okay so you have your cumulative after each unit that's test day which is open-ended that's your your more difficult more challenging tasks and then your cumulative test b which is multiple choice okay and you can alternate between a and b right or put your own tests together and do a little mix of a and b okay chapter unit two and i'll just fly through here two not i i feel like i wanna have a like three more kids just so i can use all my math stuff again i mean all of my home school stuff like i'm you know my kid my you know my youngest son is in fourth grade so i'm like oh man i don't have to use any of this stuff anymore i need more babies i need to have more babies all right so so that's basically it guys i'm just this video is already really long i am going to go live so if you guys want to see certain chapter more in depth you can and that's it for the test answers in the back okay i got 3b here i have no idea where the workbook is i think i stopped buying it yeah i don't think i i don't i own it but i have the textbook so let's just keep cracking in that so you guys already got the basics of what the home instructor's guide looks like we're just going to look at the scheme of work okay so we're picking up on unit six which is length got meters centimeters let me just i'm gonna be quiet and i'm just gonna flip through okay so it's your measurement you're starting with measurement for 3b you're starting with measurement [Applause] and then the next unit is on weight and then the unit after that is capacity and then we're moving into money so you start 3b with measurement and then you go on to money okay but you're still using addition subtraction multiplication and division but with a focus on money that is unit 9 and then you move on to fractions unit 10 fractions let me just get a little bit tighter for you guys and you're doing a lot of fractions fraction of a whole equivalent fractions adding fractions subtracting fractions fractions as a set fractions and money fractions and money okay and if you look here the weeks are cumulative so we're 13 weeks into the school year if you start or 13 weeks into when you started using this uh the next unit is time and then other units of time and then the next unit is geometry so you're doing angles right angles quadrilaterals triangles solid figures all of that and then the last two with the last unit unit 13 area perimeter and volume and it's broken up nicely into area perimeter and volume and then your review and then answers for unit 13 workbook exercises and review follow and then answers to mental math so that's basic that's it for for 3b for the home instructor's guide it's just like 3a just different lessons now for the materials you do have different materials you have additional materials okay you you have your measuring tools and you have you can see because you do a lot of measuring in this semester or in 3b there's a lot of measurement so you have a lot of different measurement tools you also have coins and bills store cards fraction bars and circles counters clock index cards solid shapes okay i to me and then your supplements um which is the same from 3a so so in the back of your home instructor's guide where it says mental math which is optional they do give you some things to do but it's to practice being able to recall your math facts basically or procedures that you learn pretty quickly and so that's going to be in the back of your home instructor's guide your hig and you can just photocopy these if you have you know kids or if you want to resale so that's what that looks like that's the mental math part and then you have your fraction bars so just so you know you don't have to buy a lot of those manipulatives uh some of the manipulatives that are suggested in this guide you can get in the back of the book i should have said that at the beginning you just print this out on cardstock fraction circles okay and then in some instances they'll tell you where this applies to the lesson okay uh inch graph paper centimeter graph paper and there you go and that's just additional and isometric dot paper all right that's it so that's the um the teacher's guide and then for the textbook we saw that earlier so for the textbook for 3b basically second semester it's cumulative so we're picking up with um unit 6 length unit 7 weight unit 8 capacity unit 9 money and then unit 10 fractions and then time geometry area perimeter and volume and then review so that's our text for 3b and this is what it looks like with all my kids uh grubby fingers and stuff okay now this is my third child i think i'll have to see some dates on this so after a while i'm like go ahead write in the book i'll just give this away to a mom she can always erase this so there you go uh here's your practice and then there's there there is the review remember this is cumulative so this is review six which is the first review in 3b but the sixth review overall okay because this is a 3a 3b system okay so i'm skipping some pages because my son did at some point in time write his full name on some of these pages so here's now look sometimes you know it starts to rev up this is review number seven there's a lot going on here right just look at all these problems right here okay it says problem 13 but you got problem 13 a b c d all the way to p so it starts to it's p it picks up it picks up okay so that was uh so we're still doing measurements which is volume over here practice and then a review and then we're into money and then there's your money this is such a solid program guys very very solid now we're into fractions i'll show you what the fractions look like subtracting fractions and then here's your practice i like the pictures i like how they show a diverse crowd of kids got your little animals in here okay who says that when you get older you you don't need color or a nice visual layout not me when i was teaching english to japanese students they were uh in college and learning english and i taught using elementary pre preschool sometimes sometimes preschool materials i know other teachers did the same thing because at this stage the the curriculum the books the resources they get right to the point they give you the most essential thing that you need and it's fun okay time now we're into time i'm going to speed this up because i know this video is so long so long all right so i'm just gonna go through this really fast we're almost done all right this is the last unit area perimeter volume all right i'm just skipping some of these you guys get the point right though you get the point right and then here's your glossary let me get to the glossary there's your glossary and your index okay guys so i hoped that walkthrough gave you some more information or just basic information about the primary mathematics series and hopefully it helps to sway whether this is something you would think will be worthwhile with your child or for you to use i know it's the end of january and some people start planning for the next school year around this time you know they're like shopping around browsing looking at different curriculums so i really wanted to get this out so you can make an informed decision i am going to go live with singapore math as a topic so if you want to get more nuanced answers um definitely check in on that and i'll have a notice like a day before and if this is like you're watching this later on in the year then you'll probably find the video up there somewhere or in my um singapore math playlist okay so check that out as well want to see more curriculum like this check out these lovely videos off to my side and that way you can get more information on more curriculum resources more choices you can see what we've used and
