the set of ABC's the view became an imposition of a modern far-left interpretation of Billy D Williams movies and statements regarding race and gender gracing the set and the audience with his presence to promote his new book Billy's time on the show became a little awkward when one of the panelists decided to ask a question that ended up rubbing many including Billy himself the wrong way Billy appeared on The View to discuss his new book what have we here portraits of a life which tells us about his life from growing up in Harlem New York to his iconic roles in Star Wars the interview got off to a relatively boring start as Whoopi introduced Billy to the audience Billy's responses were somewhat brief and stiff as Whoopi and the rest of the crew listened to his recounting of how he entered the movie industry Sunny host also took part in the conversation as she expressed her admiration for the star and her fondness for his movies naming his characters like Lando kesian however this question and answer session soon took a downturn when Sunny htin inquired about Billy's experiences working in the industry as a person of color before she could go on with her question Billy D Williams sensibly reminded everyone including Sunny the fact that everyone is a person of color to which Sunny went a bit specific iterating her question to be about challenges faced as a black man instead of answering her question directly Billy rectified Sunny's mistake of calling him black referring to himself as a brown-skinned man I am just I'm so honored to meet you all I I will be honest I I'm just looking at Lando Calrissian in my mind and lady sings the blues and mahogany and just right right that's all I'm I mean just incredible so you did start as whaty said in the industry at a time when few people of color were on TV and in movies and early everybody's a people of color Yes well a black man well a brown skin man brown skinn man brown skinn man for someone like Billy D William who in his 880s and went through that time the whole terminology of referring to Billy as a black or brown skinned man as Sunny htin had done really made him uncomfortable it was evident that none of the panel members on The View had done their homework on him because Billy D Williams had frequently expressed his disdain for being reduced to a race-based political symbol for certain political agendas it has been perceived by many people that having a Hollywood actor on The View has typically been a Surefire choice for the hosts who often delve in discussions centered around identity politics it's even more advantageous if the actors belong to one or more minority groups however what many of these contemporary race focused commentators or hosts fail to grasp is that the artist of color like Billy D Williams don't perceive themselves in that light they don't view themselves as victims or their circumstances or race they simply see themselves as artists who prefer to be recognized for their craft rather than being dragged into Political debates and culture wars that they scarcely ident identify with on the other hand Billy's reply also ended up Landing him in controversies as many of his fans took his reply as an offense to the black color and many of his fans bashed him for having a shameful old colorism mentality however when asked about his opinions in one of his interviews regarding his latest Memoir Billy stated that I don't think about all that stuff I'll let everyone else think about it I've led a very eclectic life I see myself as the full spectrum of colors and when you're painter you'll learn a lot more about that perspective Sunny despite witnessing the unease on the guest faces continued with her question asking about his journey of securing roles in the industry as a minority and his battle with depression both topics he also discussed in his Memoir addressing Billy's difficulties in finding any other roles aside from stereotypical characters Sunny asked about the motivation that kept him going despite being pushed into a state of depression and early on you struggled to find work uh being offered either stereotypical roles or nothing at all and you write about it sending you into a depression um did you ever think about quitting and and if you didn't what kept you going Billy replied that one must not expect things to go their way and one must be able to innovate and find ways to overcome obstacles and keep moving forward well I don't know I um you know you just live from moment to moment and do what you have to do and and expect things to not always go your way yeah and you just find the ways to be Innovative and you find ways to uh counter whatever you're up against and and move forward however the controversy was far from over as Sarah Haynes joined the conversation when Billy was taking pride in his and his family support throughout his career Sarah initiated by bringing up Billy's big breakthrough from the super hit movie Brian song starring James Khan and Billy D Williams which resulted in both of their Emy nominations and one of the largest audiences in movie history Sarah brought up the fact that Billy had admitted himself saying that the people used to approach him just to tell him how the movie had impacted them well and you also get some pretty great opportunities in 1971 you got a big break starring with James Khan in the TV movie Brian song that good playing football players who became uh close friends and you both got Emmy nominations and the movie had the largest viewing audience of any TV movie before and you've said that people still come up to you today to tell you how it impacted them no it was a very special experience you know Billy admitted that the movie experience was an act of love a great opportunity that sorted his life but the real Attack was yet to come when Sarah rhetorically implied that the movie had been way ahead of its time and projected certain ideas to men that they never knew so well henting toward the Notions around gender feminism and toxic masculinity I always say it was an act of love the whole experience you know it's one of those moments when everything comes together yes you know it's rare but it that was one of those moments I think a movie be it was a movie before its time in that it gave a lot of men everywhere permission to feel some of those things they don't always they didn't always get that it wasn't always allowed what Sarah had implied was a poor interpretation that failed to do justice to the depths and complexity of the movie which explored themes of friendship and comforting mortality resonating with audiences even decades later it was a film about interracial friendship and breaking down invisible barriers created at a time when it was remarkably Progressive on racial issues answering Sarah's question Billy referred to the sophisticated point about human Psychology from the work of Carl Young bringing up the phrase anima animus referring to the idea of masculine and feminine traits in a personality well I I was a follower of Carl Yung oh yes and uh oh I dated him and uh he he coined a phrase uh Ana animus yes and uh Ana being the female counter counterpart of the male self an animous the male counterpart of the female s however what he wanted to deliver was the deeper meaning of the term the real psychology of Personality that did not even come near the vague and crass concept of gender fluidity Billy on multiple occasions in his interview had clarified that the philosophy he had held was men getting in touch with their softer side which had been portrayed by the media as a support of gender fluidity he had made it clear with his tone when he referred to his daughter who had been a supporter of the term claiming that it was all because she had been a liberal in fact I was talking about it and uh somebody what was that that that phrase uh the gender phrase what do you call it oh toxic masculinity no no okay it's binary fluidity fluid fluidity gender fluid gender fluid gender fluid yeah and my daughter got very excited about that did she yeah why I well because she's a liberal oh I say yeah those damn liberals
