Hollywood Forever Cemetery's Famous Citizens

so right now we're heading over to hollywood forever cemetery we're gonna check out what hollywood graves we can uh it's late november so it's two o'clock in one thousand feet you will arrive at your destination it starts getting dark around 4 whitish so i've got a number of celebrities that i'm going to try to find and hopefully show you and tell you a little bit about [Music] i don't think so so here we are at the tomb of douglas fairbanks that died and douglas fairbanks jr douglas fairbanks was born in 1883 and he died in 1939 his son 1909-2000 nice little memorial here to him he's got a picture of his face up there profile adapted from what shakespeare says good night sweet princes and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest and somebody's laid a flower right here on his grave at one time douglas fairbanks was one of the most famous actors in the world it's one of the first silent film stars i think he made his way into the talkies as well very interesting reflecting pool that is front of the grave of douglas fairbanks and douglas fairbanks jr a little bench for meditation this [ __ ] bears a lot of elaborate carvings wreaths ribbons right behind the grave is a cactus and it kind of reminds me of a photo that i have signed by him i think it's from in old arizona there's some cactuses in that picture i'm not sure why these boulders are here but we can find out and look at the one with the hole in it there's a lot of people here yeah no romanian film director icub i don't even know how to say his name check out that stone who is this johnny ramon what would they play um he was in the ramones johnny ramon died 2004. if a man can tell if he's been successful in his life by having great friends then i have been very successful robert matthau who was a legendary photographer it says here picture of him and his daughter apparently you are only waiting for this moment to arise he wasn't buried here this is just a cenotaph paying homage to him somebody left up a penny for toto right there this monum is dedicated to the memory of beloved toto from the 1939 film the wizard of oz after the death of toto originally named terry in 1945 owner and trainer carl spitz buried the karen terrier on his ranch in studio city the 1958 construction of the ventura freeway destroyed her resting place he gave you this new place new home 53 years later is there's no place like home speaking of toto we were unable to get inside the mausoleum on the west side of the cemetery to view the new resting place for judy garland when she died in 1969 garland was buried in new york at the request of her husband mickey deans in january 2017 her children had her remains transferred from front cliff cemetery to hollywood forever cemetery to be closer to them and to hollywood so i was thrilled to find this grave it's that of mickey rooney the child star that turned into an adult star legendary hollywood performer did you watch mickey and anything i can't remember anything i oh i can picture him a lot but i can't think of anything he's been in either mickey rooney he had a tragic end he was somewhat abused by his wife and some of his children he was left pretty much destitute one of the greatest hollywood entertainers the world has ever known hollywood will always be his home according to wikipedia nikki rooney was an american actor but billion comedian radio personality and producer well like vida russian american actor in 1943 1943-2017 cool little marker here on this christopher jones who died in 2014 he played jesse james in the abc tv series the legend of jesse james which ran 34 episodes in 1965 and six he was also married to actress susan strasberg baron clement von frankenstein 1944 to 2019 actor gentlemen most lovable friends this is the cathedral mausoleum which we can go inside of and i want to check it out because there's some interesting actors in here inside the mausoleum i found an incredible display honoring the memory of peter laurie i looked and looked and looked and i could not find any niche for his remains if i had just looked to the lower right i could have found his remains and i found him later online back here in the corner is the grave of rudolph valentino died in 1926. silent film star rudolph valentino of italian descent was a sex symbol of the 1920s known in hollywood as the latin lover a title invented for by hollywood moguls his premature death in 1926 at the age of 31 following an attack of appendicitis caused mass hysteria among his fans and further propelled his status as a cultural film icon an estimated 100 000 people lined the streets of manhattan to pay their respects at his funeral after valentino's remains were taken by train from new york to california a second funeral was held in beverly hills this crypt is where he's been for the last 94 years every year on the anniversary of his death a mysterious lady in black appeared in his tomb and left a single rose the identity of the original lady in black is disputed but the most convincing claimant is dietrich flamey who said that valentino visited her in the hospital when she was deathly ill at age 14 bringing her a red rose flamey said she kept up her annual pilgrimage for three decades and then abandoned the practice when multiple imitators started showing up actress terry moore played the lady in black in a movie called silent life shot right here in 2018. right here somebody has written a love note to him dorothy so i wrote your name in my heart and that's where i will always stay it's only in like 20 20. so valentino is right here and if you look right over here you'll see the grave of peter finch distinguished actor i believe he was in the movie network who screamed on madison and i'm not going to take it anymore died in 1977. [Music] hmm [Music] right here is the grave of nelson eddy june 29 1901 to march 6 1967 it was best known for roles with jeanette macdonald musicals and movies in the 1930s buried right here loving wife and eddie is right here she died in 1987. he's just outside of the hollywood memorial park cathedral mausoleum so i remember going in an antique store one day and seeing a signed photo of nelson eddy the person wanted like five dollars for it i paid for it and then he said do you know who that is and i said no because i was afraid he'd go oh that's worth more than five dollars but it was nelson eddy so right here i found the grave of cecil b demille the famous director of ten commandments he's buried right here cecil blunt demille august 12 1881 to january 21st 1959 the plot is here on the east side looks like his wife constance adams demille died in 1960 just one year later was buried right next to him so found the grave of virginia rap 1895 1895-1921 she was allegedly raped by roscoe fatty arbuckle at a san francisco hotel and she ended up dying pretty brutal treatment of this woman and fatty arbuckle lost his career basically because of what happened to her he was put on trials quite a spectacle for hollywood but very tragic end to a very promising young life looks like she was 26 years old the crime took place at the saint francis hotel in san francisco she's buried right here at the foot of this cypress tree looks like somebody's left some mementos including some women's shoes a handbag tomato sauce and it's like spring water very tragic thing happened to this young lady baby are the turtles on the rock real right i don't think so i was looking for the grave of actress marion davies and was a bit fooled by the name on this mausoleum it says doris on the front and i assumed that her name would have been davies on the mausoleum but i learned that doris was the birth name of mary davies her body lies and equipped inside of this structure now actor arthur lake famous for playing dagwood in the tv series blondie it's also in here this association is going to require some explaining so mary and davies had an affair with the very rich and powerful william rattle first and it's pretty common knowledge now that they had a love child together named patricia van cleave it was covered up at the time they passed the girl off as the daughter of marion's sister and her husband and their names were rose and george van cleed they raised her but hers financially supported her patricia had a lot to do with marion and william randolph hearst she grew up and met actor arthur lake and they married at hearst castle her name becoming patricia lake she died in 1993 and was also laid to rest in here i think also inside the mausoleum are marion's parents bernard and rose those first died in 1928 and also her sister is buried here as well now outside here are graves associated with davies as well one of them being maitland-rice leader a relative through marriage leader worked in film production with fox and cosmopolitan pictures next to him is the grave of actor louis adelin who was the second husband of marion's sister rose davies he appeared in two dozen motion pictures mostly supporting roles as a nazi officer and over here is george barnes bentley the reported father of patricia lake even though it was actually hearst van cleef's body was actually removed from that mausoleum and buried here in the front in 1951 so here we are at the grave of the famous fay ray who is the actress that was best known in the 1930s version of king kong she was pulled up to the empire state building by king kong and held up there yeah very famous actress she died in 2004 beautiful young actress who made king kong kind of what he was right here next to this bench opposite this memorial over here when i was a kid i loved to watch get smart i also watched adam 12 and a bunch of other shows in the 60s but found the grave here of dawn adams he was famous as maxwell smart and get smart the tv show that ran from 1965 to 70. there is holding up his shoe that doubled as a phone don adams died in 2005 beloved husband father and grandfather proudly served his country during world war ii in the marine corps he was a comedian poet philosopher movie buff and never late for post time a tough but sensitive man with a sensitive heart and a compassionate soul he touched our hearts as maxwell smart secret agent 86 in the 1960s classic tv series get smart and fill the world with laughter that will be forever remembered right here is a beautiful angel here at their feet it says if love could have saved you you would have lived forever and it has the us marine corps insignia [Music] right there is tyrone powers grave as well tyrone power was one of those hollywood legends and his grave featuring the marble bench here butting up to a large book are as unique as his career he died at a very young age he was just 44 died of a heart attack while filming a movie i think in spain he was known for his good looks in the 1930s and 1950s powell appeared in dozens of films mostly as a swashbuckler or a romantic lead his better known films include the mark of zorro marie antoinette blood and sand the black swan prince the foxes the black rose and captain from castile his career was actually interrupted by world war ii in fact he enlisted to the marines and trained to be a pilot and he did a number of cargo runs into active combat zones has a passage from shakespeare hamlet there's a special providence in the fall of a sparrow if it be now it's not to come if it not be to come it will be now if it be not now yet it will come the readiness is all good night sweet prince and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest over here beyond the wilting flowers you'll see the happy and sorrowful mess tyrone power what a great actor 1914 and 1958. somebody planted their lips right there look at that buried here is harrison gray otis who died in 1917 and his wife eliza otis died 1904. otis published the l.a times from 1986 until after world war 1. in 1860 he was a 23 year old delegate to the republican national convention and he helped to nominate abraham lincoln he also served as a lieutenant colonel during the civil war harry was a newspaper publisher who owned the los angeles times and became owner of one of the largest real estate empires in the united states he was fiercely anti-labor and in 1910 his newspaper office was bombed and 21 of his employees were killed and here's the grave of harry chandler he was otis's son-in-law he died in 1944 and his wife marion otis chandler who died in 1952 very cool patriotic symbolism here on this memorial he helped to develop a lot of san fernando valley as well as building the la coliseum and the awani hotel in yosemite national park this is a memorial to all the martyred men of 21 who were killed in the bomb blast at the los angeles times and look at this pretty cool the angel of the watch he's got a bible in his hand now don't be fooled by this massive atlas rock here because it doesn't represent anyone involved in the space industry it doesn't it's the grave of carl morgan bixby retired by god in 1959 it reads the atlas pioneer space here symbolizes the lifetime activities of carl morgan bigsby a recognized leader in many phases of the graphic arts he too was a pioneer let's look at that atlas rocket and right down here it says the atlas as shown here is to exact scale of the original missile the pioneer atlas into orbit with 122 pound payload december 18 1958 constance the wife over here must have had a droll sense of humor because she put down too bad we had fun she actually died in 2000 but her marker hasn't been updated so our attention was caught by this grave over here the back of it says getty and i was thinking it was like jay paul getty and there's all kinds of rocks then i saw the happy and the tragic mask and we found out one of the golden girls oh there's betty that's betty white she's still with us with love and laughter still getty she's jewish 1923 to 2008. you can tell she's got a lot of people remembering her with rocks and quarters coins coins on top she was well loved that's for sure oh i love the golden girls that's a great show okay well we actually came over here because there's a grave over there that we need to go to it's the grave oh no blank the voice daffy duck bugs buddy yosemite sam and all these other people it's also remembered oh somebody put a carrot on top that is so cool look at that well-loved mel blanc that's all folks man of a thousand voices beloved husband and father 1908-1989 this man certainly entertained me on saturday morning cartoons got to hear all of his voices wonderful cartoons back in the 70s and 60s foxhorn leghorn semi-san bucks buddy just a crazy assortment of people speeding us all this was also his speedy gonzales that's very cool still blank his wife lived from 1910 to 2003. so i was a little worried i wouldn't find this grave but i did it's that of that red-headed girl peggy shannon 1910 to 1941. she was born in pine bluff arkansas as winona salmon and she began her career as a ziegfeld girl in 1923 before moving on to broadway paramount pictures signed her up and groomed her to replace clara beau as the newest it girl whom she replaced in a 1931 film the secret call she ruined her life and her career with her growing dependency on alcohol in fact her last film was in 1940 one year later she suffered an alcohol-related heart attack and died at the age of 34 tragic loss her heartbroken husband was albert roberts visited this grave here on may 30th 1941. three weeks after she died at her kitchen table he went home and he called his sister that day and explained that he was going to kill himself and she said don't do it don't do it and then she heard a bang he shot himself in the same spot where peggy died at the kitchen table his suicide note read i'm very much in love with my wife peggy shannon in this spot she passed away so in reference to her you will find me in the same spot she was a beautiful woman there's a rose here on her grave and right next to her is nancy shannon 1896 to 1970. if this is her mother as it's been reported then she was about 14 years old when she had peggy so i'm not sure what the truth is on that i feel fortunate that i have a signed photo peggy shannon they're quite rare given the fact that she died so long ago and her autographs are rare peggy shannon contrary to popular opinion jane mansfield is not buried in this cemetery but is laid to rest in pennsylvania a marker here in her name is only a cenotaph which is a marker representing a grave which is elsewhere the same is true of the marker for gun with the wind star hattie mcdaniel she was supposed to be buried here in 1952 but due to prevailing segregation rules at the cemetery she was actually interred elsewhere in los angeles this marker was added in the late 1990s buried here in this crypt is harry cohn the famous studio mogul he died in 1958 he was the co-founder and the president of columbia pictures and had a reputation for his iron fisted control of the studio in fact his nicknames were white fing and king khan even though he was married to wife joan here who passed away in 1996 he made a lot of passes a lot of starlets and had an affair with rita hayworth if he had done that today he would totally been exposed by the metoo movement his funeral here drew a lot of stars including jimmy stewart rosalind russell and loretta young so right here it looks like a beautiful quartz rock it marks the grave of actress valerie harper who died in 2019 from lung and brain cancer she was best known for her tv role as rhoda she was born in august and she died in august 80 years apart if you'll remember rhoda was a spin-off of the mary tyler moore show which she appeared on in the 1970s rhoda came along in 1974 and she lasted four years on tv this is probably the most organic looking gravesite here it's got plants and has a rock garden inscription reads mia valeria i will miss and love you with every fiber of my being through this world and beyond the end of time love forever anthony followed by this sentiment of daughter christina you are my eternal son so some security guard just came by here and told me that i couldn't videotape well it's a good thing i'm at the end of the day and i videotaped just about everything that i wanted to tape uh i just don't understand such policies it seems like they're really oppressive this is a place to memorialize people and to remember them and what's the harm in photographing them [Music] i think that's all the grace that we're
