welcome to movies garage the dumbest automotive channel in all of YouTube and it's probably been a while since you've seen a first-generation bmw x5 especially a 4.4 liter on the road when they used to be everywhere but then if you look on auto Tempest there's probably thousands of these for sale for under $5,000 and if you look at it it is a beautiful SUV for under $5,000 it seems like an incredible deal but I'm gonna tell you right now I don't care who you are you should never ever ever buy please others they're just bringing it there there we go now this x5 is triggering my PTSD just a little bit because I used to own one of these complete disasters I was a pretty spoiled kid I got one as a present for high school graduation it was used so it was three or four years old and less than a brand new fully loaded Kia Sorento but it was a beautiful x5 4.4 eye and it had about a year left on the warranty which it did use a few times and then when it was off warranty it was a complete disaster just about everything broke head to tail costing thousands and thousands of dollars it was just non-stop broken until I finally gave up and traded it in on a Jeep Wrangler and that was before this thing was ten years old and it didn't even have a hundred thousand miles on it so if you're wondering where my bias from BMW comes from well it's from these things right here they're bad so in my opinion this configuration of the bmw x5 whether it be the earlier or the later one with the 4.4 v8 is one of the worst cars that BMW ever made and the x5 got it start this is BMWs first SUV or crossover they actually called it a sport activity vehicle after they acquired the rover group which if you're not from the US you may have not heard of them but if you're from Europe where you watch Top Gear you know the rover group wasn't very good and the lead designer of the x5 admitted that he only had a few hours to sketch out a design of the x5 which he did on some napkins on a flight and well that's ridiculous the design of the car really isn't that bad it's probably the most beautiful luxury SUV design-wise to come out of the air and quality wise just on the surface it doesn't look really nice you can see this is original paint this blues a pretty color it's held up well the body itself has a great shape with fender flares and the interior we'll get to that a little bit is holding up really well the interior the wood the materials in there it does look really nice and high quality but once you get beneath the surface so when things start to get really bad so on the surface it's easy to see the lure of these things so you can buy a once 50,000 plus SUV that is aged really well design wise for under $5,000 it's just an incredible value and a little over a great five it just seems like a steal it's amazing you can get this much car for basically zero money when you look at it but then then you start digging in it's really bad so outside like I said it is a beautiful design I love that they put this fender flare in here and it is a great shape just a great looking SUV and the other thing I like is the tailgate here well it actually has a tailgate like a truck that you can sit on and this one has the optional cargo slider slides out for your groceries makes it easy to grab pretty cool but just like a pickup truck you can sit on this thing it makes really scary creaky plastic noises but you can sit on it and enjoy your lunch or whatever and when you look inside things are very tidy in here BMW does a good job with their leather this thing has a hundred and fifty-five thousand miles on it though there's probably never been treated but it's held up really well same with the wood there's a little bit of surface cracking but overall it's in beautiful shape same with the dashboard which is a soft touch - but it hasn't cracked see the instruments everything's still bright the headliner well sagging a little bit but it's still there and it's real easy to find with these for sale and they look to be in great shape and it just seems like they have some minor needs but usually these minor needs are not minor or if they are there's kind of death of a thousand cuts going on as I still now demonstrate as we start up this x5 [Music] so we have check brake linings now I'm not sure if you noticed but it was a pretty rough bumpy start we have check brake lights check rear lights and right now the engine is revving grace so the brake light in the check engine light is on but the car runs it moves it actually revs really nice right now which it hasn't been doing that all the time but when you start looking closely that's when things start getting really bad for example take a look at the climate control BMW in this area they weren't known for their plastics in the 90s it was the cooling system that's made of plastic it would disintegrate before the car well was supposed to be retired and it's still here in the x5 these buttons are just falling off left and right and I still have them here to where I can stick them back on to make the buttons work but they're all falling off minor issues I suppose but this plastic fantastic theme continues right into this door handle which is broken it does absolutely nothing and I could roll down the window and open it from the door-handle outside except this window as you can see it's it's broken it it barely moves at all so if I want to get out of this thing I have to climb out the passenger side yeah yeah I imagine rolling up to the club in the x5 and having to crawl out your passenger door and these are all things that I experienced with my own expire but when the regulator failing an interior door handle break and and even more which we shall continue with ah yes the life of an x5 owner and the door polarity doesn't stop there the passenger door the door handle is broken on the outside this is not locked so if you have a passenger they would have to climb in through the driver's side but then you all would have to come out the passenger side and that that's just a normal bmw x5 issue speaking of normal issues you look at the rear end you probably think it's well sagging a little bit and you're absolutely right this BMW has rear air suspension and it's it's absolutely not working but that's probably the least of this cars problem is well driving down to my trusty BMW mechanic Johnny the car ninja and I'll go over all the other things that I've noticed it's it's a mess all right here we go and as you can see the suspension inactive light has come on and with the dead rear air-ride this thing has the handling properties well the suspension properties of a lumber truck it is super bouncy in the rear and not only is the rear suspension messed up but the front suspension is cockeyed as well this is kind of straight steering wheel here popped off to the left and it's very loose and just a mess it feels like up there as well alright let's nail this thing it's going all right that's 50 oh man this is spinning bouncy bouncy bouncy bouncy it was just so messed up but the engine is actually running surprisingly well at the moment the seller had tried to fix a misfire for the check engine light when I first got this thing it was flashing with the misfire seems to come and go you try to tune up and that didn't work which means it probably has two major issues potentially with the engine either cylinder scoring or valve seals helping our experience with Alpina b7 that I just punted and if you buy the earlier x5 of the earlier v8 engine well then you have the timing chain guys to deal with as well which is also tearing apart the engine so there's really there's no good v8 x5 there really isn't told me if I had big breasts they would be bouncing and I keep getting a lot more views but anyway we're off to the car ninja now and there's a lot of obvious issues but I'm answer when we get this thing up on the lift and we look around there's going to be a lot more issues that aren't obvious for just from a cursory glance ninja I'm stuck I can't get out hello there's a handle broken so let me ask you a question how many people have come into your shop and or in your previous life and they just bought a really cheap bmw x5 it seems to have just a few minor problems but it was such an amazing deal I just had to buy it and then they're just completely ruined financially yeah a lot so that's what I'm trying to stop people from doing right here with this x5 I bought it to a little over grands it has only one hundred fifty-five thousand miles but it is mechanically a mess a mess well it don't handle things in a big deal but the window doesn't go down or up so I have to go out the passenger side come here it kind of fell off you know no no big deal yeah the suspension sagging but probably the biggest issue that I notice isn't in a lot of leaks is the check engine light came on and it would flash with a really bad misfire and the guy said that he already tried to do a tune-up on it so it's not coils and plugs I figured it could be what you're doing right here maybe the valve seals right yeah which is an inside job or the cylinder scoring which we encountered before so you want to poke around on this thing a little bit and give me an estimate it's not gonna be worth it it's not worth our time at all but this is just to help people from making a massive mistake sure really yes and first off yeah axle boots which are just completely torn and destroyed and you know on my x5 that I had I went through two on one side and one on the other they would just shred left and right and I saw this thing at 75,000 miles same on this side yeah-oh torn horribly yeah very common it's ridiculous and oil leaks allure no leak - oh boy yeah you see where the coolant leaks coming from let's see on top yes okay but oil everywhere yeah it's like the Exxon Valdez spill here environmentally it's just a disaster well cover gaskets diamond cover gaskets whole thing gasket so basically every gasket in the engine is leaking oil acceptable the one on front right that's thinking - it's leaking - yeah the timing chain cover oh yeah it's all leaking yes at least the the transmission looks okay other than being covered with oil yeah actually this is really good transmission okay well there's something good to say about it so back here we have air ride correct and they're gone I mean they're they're just shredded yes how can you tell well they're called the micro cracks oh yeah it's just completely collapsed inwards yeah I bet if we can inject air and spray some soapy water you'll see bubbling it's correct really bad Wow same on this side yeah this is worse you can see actually right here oh yeah it's just completely it's just completely collapsed and blown in its just toast well these Dean has good tires yeah how's the suspension the back looks really tight solid a little a little wiggle there yeah from what the bull join and your upper control arm right there look at that Wow look at the rust is coming out of it oh okay how about the front pretty solid on this side yeah broken I'm pushing on this lower arm here just shredded yes done so the front right and the left rear or bad yeah it's leaking from everywhere this is this is all things that I encountered with my x5 this oh okay just yeah just starting to drip there so leaking pretty much everything we don't know where the coolant leak is yet so we can put on the ground and then run some codes huh yeah okay so coolant leak what was that it's coming out this area here right oh I can see it yeah the supply line here it's not pushing it all the way so just pop it in yeah perfect somebody change this so that's an easy fix and the door handle thing it's not big deals are really easy fix so you could fix that for I mean they're like $20 parts or whatever but what is this engine doing with the misfire that's the real question I'm gonna have to do some diag Synod but my guess because of consumption you probably plugged your cousin's different burgers okay oh yeah you like that yeah the buttons just fall off yeah that's work long it's like a puzzle there you go yeah back in kind of not really that's that's a lot of red yeah so how about the check engine we're gonna focus on the main ones yeah right so several cylinder misfire misfire alternator mm-hmm and cylinder seven it's a lot of misfires yeah and it's definitely not coils no the caustic neo spark plugs that brand new compression is good well since it does run well on occasion yes so that leads you to your theory of due to oil consumption function yes you're ticking through more is there any point yeah traction control right transmission link both look there's even transmission codes and then there's gonna be suspension there's gonna be ABS the brakes it needs brakes it it needs everything there's a transfer case error yeah communication with the ABS module I see please don't even have a low-range do they hmm so there's transfer case it doesn't do anything except make it all wheel drive all right well obviously I don't want to waste too much of your time going into a really detailed thing but let's let's let's address the big things you can just write up a quick estimate to take care of the engine issues the major leaks the suspension problem and the door handle just to make this thing an actual usable car all right yeah so you priced out some parts for me yeah good okay hit me thousand dollars my figure is gonna be that high so the cheap stuff was the door handles right yeah how much about hundred bucks 100 bucks mere luck come on bugs okay got the window deck for 15 okay we our bags but they fund above $800 for the rewrites okay I'm about 1,200 bucks okay now you got the engine rebuild well yeah the valve seals and then all the leaks you're taking the engine out yeah about 3500 bucks $3,500 and the last thing is the cats which I'm thinking it is you're talking about 4,200 bucks just for those thanks man just for the catalytic converter is $4,200 and you're not allowed to buy those use because that's illegal no 4,200 a horse or an BMW does not like aftermarket so the check engine light would be on if you have to barber time and that's an aftermarket one or is that a stock though it's not one a stock one Wow well why don't we test your theory because obviously I'm not gonna fix this car I'm just gonna drive it right to the salvage yard I'm saving somebody a world of hurt by buying this thing we can take the castle again see yeah take the cats off and then it's straight pipes uh-huh and this thing's last ride will be allowed one do it okay $4,200 because it's want these with a muffler my goodness are you ready yeah do I sound like a Chevy yeah well I don't know why I'm coming back to the exhaust cuz it comes down right there it's now a side pipe that's amazing all right this is my last drive in this thing to the junkyard it's going to be glorious oh my sounds like I just went to the monster truck show holy moly it's not misfiring that's awesome it's actually decently quiet when you cruise to little x5 I gotta say you sound amazing you're going out with a bang I forgot there's railroad tracks to get the Bob shop about 12 railroad tracks here we go oh okay Oh organs are everywhere now except where they're supposed to be found another way to get out through the pain around a summer of what actually works so I'm not sure if the monster truck rally ending uh really dissuade people from buying this thing is it sounds awesome straight piped and now runs very well but still you should never ever ever ever ever buy a cheap bmw x5 really mm ver okay thank you for watching [Music]

He's kinda draining the niche he found (tbh you could argue Doug Demuro founded this with the Carmax Range Rover thing. Everything has been predictable for a long time now.
The thing is, I like his format and his presentation/sense of humour (other than the recycled I'm an idiot joke). I think he has great potential if he started doing proper project cars. I never really found a good project car YT channel because I always found that the videos are them just vlogging about their life and friends and an awkward camera angle showing the engine bay. But, to differentiate himself he could do wacky projects, like that nitrous Prius he did (I loved that one). A wacky guy doing wacky projects has better potential and its harder to get predictable that way.
His mistake was buying the 4.4. The 3.0 is actually rather stout.
Guy on my block is still driving a first gen X5 V8 that is this car’s twin. Still seems to be running OK though who knows how many thousands of dollars he’s paying to keep it going.
I’ve got to say, I bought a $4300, 2010 diesel X5 at 204k miles and it’s been freaking fantastic. I’m 1.5 years into ownership, and 57k miles in. I think eh first year alone I did 48k, and it’s been great. 7k of those miles were hard towing miles. It’s still a great SUV.
So for all you people wanting an X5... go find a diesel that has emissions codes. Buy it cheap as heck, and put $2000 into deleting it if you’re able to. Reliable as SIN.
I've been a subscriber for quite a while, and tend to watch the new videos as posted. I really like Tyler and his content, good sense of humor, not pretending to know anything more than he does and I can usually not get too annoyed at his paid ads (DOLLAR SHAVE CLUB!!) Echoing what a few people have said here, he's running out of ideas to keep it fresh. Basically any slight format change will help enormously. I will bookend this comment by saying one of the recent videos of him buying his wife a car and pretending she doesn't like it was pretty shit. I groaned at the end and lost a lot of respect for his channel.
He has the worst luck with BMWs. It's hilarious.
