I Bought the Most Unreliable BMW Ever Made (2007 M5)

this is a car that you never ever want to own yourself oh really Doug well you see Doug and I don't really coordinate our videos we both write for autotrader.com slash oversteer which link below is my article and post our videos there but he doesn't tell me what he's about to post very often nor do I tell him more than a few days or a weeks notice at the time what I'm about to post but it just so happens Doug's last video was about the BMW m5 and why you should never buy one and I bought one but it was the cheapest m5 for sale in the USA that was running and driving and would you just look at it hi so as you all know my history on this channel with BMWs isn't very good it started with a 2005 BMW 745 I the most hated BMW ever made and I lost thousands of dollars after I fixed it up and you know sold it for a big loss but I lost even more thousands trying to fix a 1991 BMW 850 I it was not as described and showed up on delivery a total mess and I just abandoned it after dropping thousands of dollars into it for less than what I paid for it so that was many thousands and then I lost many less thousands but still thousands most recently on the 1997 BMW m3 I had it for a year I finally sold it I was dead fast on getting $5,000 and I sold it for four thousand partially because I bought this and I can only deal with one troublesome BMW at a time and I needed that four thousand dollars to help pay for this car which was only $6,500 huh $6,500 for a clean title BMW m5 with a little over a hundred thousand miles that runs and drives well kind of on that part now I wasn't seeking out a BMW m5 actually trouble found me my friend Bob called me up and he said this BMW was traded in at a local Honda dealer and when somebody's trading in a 500-horsepower m5 for a Honda Accord or Honda CRV you know it's gonna have problems but he said it wasn't terrible it was actually in really nice shape man and it is but it does have a hard shifting transmission this one's not a manual it has the SMG automated manual gearbox and the check engine light is on now I'm not a total moron I know how expensive it can be to fix this transmission and the check engine light there's there's tons of gotchas it could be the expensive vanos pump or the throttle actuators and of course I know at a hundred thousand miles those rod bearings are on borrowed time but at $6,500 for a 500 horsepower beautiful sedan one of the most beautiful sports sedans ever made I like I agree with Doug on that one I just I couldn't help so and would you look at us it's red and sparkly we all know that Doug is my daddy carb daddy and I'm a rebellious 32 year old teenager so I have to prove him wrong so I'm gonna set myself up as a challenge I bought this thing for $6,500 and my goal is to have this thing fixed and totally sorted for less than double the purchase price nice round number $13,000 for a totally sorted BMW m5 now this is going to be a pretty big challenge because if that transmission is dead that's gonna take a big chunk of money to fix but it could be the SMG pump that wouldn't be as bad and then the check engine light could be one of a thousand things ranging from a few dollars to thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars but hopefully I can get this car sorted and prove Doug wrong but first I really need to diagnose what's going on with this car so we need to get it up to the car wizard I'm lucky to have a car wizard who charges reasonable rates and I can find cheap used parts and he works with me so so there's there's some chance but first we've got to get it up there and this thing is not a happy camper engine runs good though now I have this rot plan very carefully because the transmission once it's warmed up it doesn't want to shift very well and then if you stop it'll actually bounce around and stall on you so I only have a few stops before this thing becomes almost impossible to drive as you can see it's shifting pretty rough there oh and I just realized my plans gone out the window because I am totally out of gas all right we're coming up on one light I gotta throw it into neutral otherwise it'll stall up the light and then it kind of feels like your clutch dropping it putting it in gear now flooring it Oh Hyundai it go faster all right bang Oh banging traction control lights come on now kind of doing a California stop there cuz I can't stop Oh like a glove schism yes it's amazing this car little over 10 years old a hundred a thousand miles $90,000 new and if I were taking this to a dealer to repair it would basically be totaled whoa whoa okay new lights don't stop I've got a California stop I'm gonna have to stop neutral go go go it's like it's forgotten how to drive stick oh come on come on shift find a gear oh there we go all right now I shouldn't have to stop at all until I get to the Wizards about 30 miles away so I'm safe at this point if something else doesn't explode in the meantime Oh well it is a beautiful color thank you but it's a sparkly red mess of a car looks like it's cutting out it's not really cutting out it's actually the transmission that's jerking violently because this is the the SMG transmission and it seems like they've got a kid who doesn't know how to drive stick running the computer in there I don't know what's going on but yeah we have quite the list it's Christmas time for the BMW because she's lit up like a Christmas tree we've got check engine low tire monitor we have trash control and abs and brake we have a new one said no oil there was low on oil yeah I started to get low on oil when it got here within the last couple of miles and then there's there's oh yes of course the transmission so that's that's eight lights very typical but it was only $6,500 so I'm sitting very pretty in this thing if we can fix it somewhat reasonably oh my yeah that holy completely coated get in there look it's all down the fender so the engine is spraying oil into the wheel which is just flying it everywhere I guess we can look at that in the bit get it up on the lift but I'm curious how many codes it has six in the engine five in the SMG treating the cluster one in the ABS four in the basic body module so let's see what the engine said eleven about thirty so it's a little less than we thought thirty codes okay engine check engine light is on it does run pretty smooth though but I have no idea how it goes power business or not use that transmission was just so bad DMT Oh pump crankshaft sensor SMG shift sequence monitoring misfire number eight same thing misfire number eight and a thermostat what's the DMT L pump because if that's the SMD pumped and we've just DMT l pump m5 oh it it looks like a little evaporative emissions okay so that's not the the vanos pump that's like yeah it's a little $70 pump and there's videos on how to replace it this is that's a relief so really the only scary one is the transmission and then what the heck is this leak holy crap yeah the transmission yes engage not possible three five two four two clutch signal speed rocker switch positive not good but you really have to do your homework to see what is causing all that yep the rest of stuff is just comp closed the ABS good maybe a second it is engine management so everything else is going so nuts that it's yeah well right off the bat my tires are in the front are just absolutely destroyed like chunks just falling apart how does that whoa holy moly that the oil is just everywhere spray it off and then run the car a leak this big it'd be pretty obvious with the thing running right yeah let me grab some spray [Music] good way to give her a little gas okay yeah I think I can make it up here each spider monkey whoop you found it can we set it off oh I'm alright oh oh so the oil cooler busted I guess we can price that out and see and then this cars on borrowed time when it comes to rod bearings I don't know why they make it rod bearings consumable on a car it's myrrh onic but can't drive without that fear about suddenly just destroying the $78,000 engine which is that's a junkyard price for an engine and then when you figure out what those codes for the transmission mean sure shall we step into your office hey wizard yeah well you don't have the look on your face of someone about to die of cancer or something great so what do you got so do your road really yeah that's the only preventative thing we're doing that's actually not fixing any of the cars problems so that's just to stop it from blowing up at any minute next the venules pump while we're having a little pan off and they're doing the rod bearing job you're looking at additional 2250 on top of it and most of that is the part 1750 for the venules I didn't even talk about the VAE nose pump so why would we will that be that's one of the five failure points on those yeah it's another way to grenade the engine is the Bannos zombie hate to do all this work so so we're 5 brand into preventative work on the engine and we're not even through the engine yet how about the misfire misfire coil pack very like there's a coil pack and you're lucky on that it's 250 bucks another thing on the engine the DMT Oh pump which is leak detection pump for the EVAP system hundred seventy-five bucks to fix that has a bad thermostat it's 400 bucks labor geez okay ports and they grow now to be nine hundred bucks how much is the oil cooler 600 set of tires up front 300 bucks yes they're destroyed and then all those clutch food we were having mr. clutch slave cylinders big issue there I say if you pull the transmission actually get that slave stone of course you do and we do some further investigating it may be where it needs a transmission we may need your clutch we'll just have to see once we get there but if we just do the slave cylinder by ourselves gonna be a grand ah and if it's more than then it'll be another three grand on top of that if we have to put a used transmission in it and put a clutch kit in it and everything like that so okay you added that all up so when we looking at ballpark here so if we don't want to put a transmission in a clutch in a look here at 7500 bucks and with the transmission $11,000 any hope of any profit is it's gone it's just a matter of whether I want to fix it or not and whether I wanted to keep living I kind of it just cuz it's all red and sparkly I think we should do it you think so yeah I'm sure - here be happy to do it that's a luxury cruise yeah you know I mean so it'll be all sorted out and then there's the thousand other little things can go wrong because it's an old BMW but the big stuff will be out of the way yeah right well here we go [Music]
