today I'm gonna talk about why it's not a good idea to put a small four-cylinder turbocharged GDI engine and a big vehicle like a Ford Explorer why you shouldn't buy one that has that engine in it in the first place look you can see it's got a tiny engine a very tiny engine with all that crap on it it's a four-cylinder 2-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine in a vehicle that's a pretty big sized vehicle what's the problem with this one it runs perfectly fine for a while especially in town turbo kicks and lots of power but then you take it in a highway get it going the turbo cuts out entirely it doesn't turbocharged at all you're just running it with no turbo and it's a dog then now my customer recently bought this vehicle he's a new customer she's an old Koster he probably wouldn't have bought it cuz he would ask me if I told him not to buy it but he did buy it and he searched and found out that the turbocharger in this thing has already been replaced two times even though when you look inside it's only got 65,000 831 miles on it when you put the scan tool on because the check engine lights on it says P 1016 wastegate pressure higher than expected now there's a technical service bulletins as you say you replace the control valve on it that's been done three times with Ford parts didn't fix anything there's no vacuum leaks on it I checked my computer there's no software updates for them and the weird thing is it'll run perfectly normal for a while then get out on the highway no boost you can cruise all day long but when you try to accelerate it accelerates very slowly and when I had my computer hooked up I could see that there was no boost from the turbocharger boost in the engine so then you said a little 4-cylinder non turbocharged engine pushing this big vehicle and weirdly enough if you shut the car off for a couple minutes started back up it runs totally normal it has great boost until you get going faster on highway and it starts all over again until you shut it off now this problem is one amongst many reasons I advise not to buy these big vehicles with little bitty turbocharged gasoline direct injection they are so complicated they have so much feedback from one system to another that can cause things to shut off no as I said this baby has already had two separate replacements of the turbocharger obviously it didn't fix it in the long run and a short run it did because it ran okay for a while but now it's doing it again no I'm not gonna be like the other guys and just throw a $1,300 parts alone turbocharger on a thing there's many things that could give false feedback so the computer thinks there's an overboost and then doesn't allow the turbocharger to boost the system anymore so the first thing we're gonna do is check the spark plugs we'll take this air duct off because it's in the white no he can access the spark plug now we'll take the little bolt that holds the coil and plug on your Mac long huh then we'll wiggle em take it off and we'll get our ratchet take out a spark plug chuck it go man that things in there sound if you can't succeed at first get a longer ratchet no I got a nice long one there we go broke loose no take it out now believe it or not the spark plug firing the way these computer systems work they use a lot of measurements to see what kind of boost is happening one of the parts that use does the spark plug so these are the original ford spark plugs that are in this thing I'm gonna change them out and see if it makes a difference we're gonna pray it does cuz if it doesn't could very well need another expensive turbocharger so we got a box of for autoit spark plugs we're gonna put new ones in before we do that we want to check the gap you can't trust these companies anymore I'll put this one in it's 32 supposed to be 28 we're gonna move it to 28 just tap a little on some metal that measure it again now it's 28 we'll check the second one it's 28 it was made right we check the third one it's 38 they really don't have much quality control so we gotta tamp this one to make it right its measured no now it's 28 now let's check the last one long behold it's 28 to 2 or more off one was off a whole bunch always check the gap these stupid things when they make them the quality isn't what it used to be jacket if the gap different least not gonna run right so now we put the new ones back in Oh hard to find that hole Meredith get a long ratchet cuz then it's easier to turn it a ratty finger tighten it now huh it's nice and tight then of course we do the other three you gotta do all four of them wish they wouldn't make these threats so long thanks to the royal pain taking them out now we'll do the third one long one comes in handy break some loose a lot easier yeah girl number three no warning call back on and you make sure when you connect the electrical connection here that it clicks when you push it in listen for it to click if it doesn't click it's not on tight listen if you listen closely you can hear there it goes click there now comes the last one number for what the last no one in Oh fillable oil realize that these four-cylinder EcoBoost engines have a tendency to burn oil as they age maybe it's only got sixty five thousand miles on it but it still will burn oil you want to check it every once in a while if that can create problems too alright now we can put the air duct back on get ready to go and you want to get them nice and tight you don't want any air leaks and that's it now we're gonna take it for a road test let's hope for the best even the hoods don't cause that good so start her up push the old bubble doctor on up now he said when you restarted it anyways the turbo would work so there's a turbo it's working at low speeds now we're gonna take it on a highway and see what happens so where we go stepping on the gas got some decent pick up the turbos working let's see how long it lasts and here we go passing the trucks it's running and really good now let's see if it holds up drive around for 15-20 minutes it's going now we're back home and voila it's still running like a clock there's a strange fix for you turbocharger wasn't boosting the engines because the spark plugs were worn and there was giving wrong feedback the engine was low on oil like I say these GDI engines the turbo charge is very complicated all kinds of things can happen from computer software an interaction between the sensors but in this case it seems fix with spark plugs in oil and here's some bonus questions and answers Benny boy tensou Scotty where would be the best place to get a car repaint it from tan to black I never advise doing that never ever change the color of a car because if they paint over that other one when it gets scratched the other color sticks out it's gonna fade weird the only way you can do that is if you have the paint stripped off to the bare metal and repaint it from scratch and that costs a fortune I mean I've seen people do that and I'll spend five to ten thousand dollars doing that the thing about car painting is if you want to get a car painted there's two things you have to realize one is you want it to just look okay number two you want it to look perfect if you want it to look perfect even if you're keeping it the same color you're gonna have to spend three to six thousand dollars cuz it's a real job painting a car perfectly now you go to these places like girl's job whatever and then in a winter they have sales will paint any car for 199 or $2.99 when I was a kid it was $59 they will painted one color but it will never shine the same it will fade over the years and look horrible after a year or two to really paint a car right costs a small fortune if you want it to look like it did on a showroom floor a lot of times if you got a car that isn't bastion you're better paying a professional guy to buff the entire car cuz sometimes they can buff off the oxidation and it looks really good and then sometimes they can do that and then they can reek lair code it they can just spray the clear coat over the top of it because realize you got under coatings and then there's the actual color that's more or less flat and then there's clear coat on top of it to make it shine so you could have a car eclair coated when it comes to change the color in a car my advice never change the color of a car you want a different color car by car that already is that color 93 says I got no.3 cavalier with Ecotec engine check engine lights on but no codes one hundred and fifty five thousand miles and where the miles are supposed to be it says error and the service French lives on I was wondering is there a PCV valve or EGR valve if there isn't any why did my oil cap blow off and blow oil everywhere I can tell you right now basically your engines just wearing out that kind of mileage it's just wearing out but you got worse things like that it says error right but you plug it in and there's no cords generally a GM product like that it means that the main computer itself is shorting out or the wiring feeding it to shorting out you got some kind of serious electrical problem - basically it's past it's due date it's a hundred fifty five thousand miles of seventeen years old if it still runs halfway decently keep boiling drive until it doesn't and then junk the stupid thing you don't want to put a bunch of money and I think it's on the end of its lifespan anyway if it's blowing that cap off that means the engine is just basically building up too much pressure because it's worn out and those Ecotec engines are notorious for that and yours everything's wearing out the piston rings are wearing out probably the valve seals are wearing out too I would just say keep boiling and drive it and just get rid of the thing when it goes don't throw a ton of money into that thing I've had some customers thrown some serious money those things they always in the end say Scotty we should have listened to you I just got rid of the stupid thing and we'll never buy another Chevy they learn to lock them out of it anyways so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that Bell [Music]
