rev up your engines all right i'm getting ready for a trip to boston to visit the other grandkids and help people out in massachusetts and rhode island i'm going to show you how to get a car ready what i'm doing and how you can ask me questions and even how you can meet me in rhode island if you want to take a trip there it's beautiful country i've been there before but first i had to get the car ready to take a trip from tennessee to visit my mother in buffalo and then down to massachusetts and then down to rhode island where we're staying on the ocean now of course the first thing you get ready for a trip is check your tire pressure you don't want to get flat tires low tire pressure has more friction you get worse gas much low tire pressure higher chance of getting a flat tire because the nails can puncture a softer tire than when it's got more air and while you're at it check the tread make sure it's not going bald and make sure it's not dry rotted all cracked up you'll notice this is a brand new tire that's because the old one was cracked it had problems in the past the other ones had been replaced but not that one it still had a lot of tread but it was all cracked so i put a new tire on as you can see the other side's perfectly fine it's not cracked or anything for some reason that other one cracked and this is the toyota matrix made in cambridge ontario this baby didn't even come with anti-lock brakes so you don't have to worry about messing up the abs sensors it doesn't have abs brakes and that you want to check under the hood first thing you want to check is the battery now you'll notice this is a brand new battery now i tested it with my fancy midtronics tester and it said that it only had 28 of its life it still started the car fine but since i'm traveling across the country i looked at the date of the battery and the battery was six and a half years old these days you're lucky if you get two three years out of it especially in a place like houston where you're running the ac all the time so i replaced the battery i used a duralast you can see it's uh 21 20 21 with the same crank and amps 550 cold cranking amps i figured what the heck the previous one was six and a half years old it still worked so i get another six and a half years out of another one i'll keep buying them until they don't last and i'll go somewhere else and the other thing you'll notice is it's got a brand new clean fan belt or drive belt you only got one on most modern cars they're serpentine that can last a really long time these had tiny little cracks on it but when i looked into my records it turns out i've been a bad boy that fan belt was last changed 10 years ago so i put another fan belt on you don't want the thing stranded in the middle of nowhere because the belt's 10 years old it still worked perfectly fine but what the heck why take a chance belts are important 10 mile 94 celica it's actually got one two three different fan belts on it let's say the power steering belt broke well i'd lose power steering but i could still drive the car not in a modern car in the case of this toyota matrix if the belt broke you couldn't drive it long the alternator would stop charging the water pump would stop pumping because it runs off a belt then voila the car would overheat very important got a uni belt system you got an old belt change it before you take a long trip now of course you want to check all your fluids power steering the radiator and of course your engine oil you want to make sure it's full and you probably want to err on the side of caution here if it's dirty change it i just changed the soil going on a big trip east coast back drive around there a couple of months have clean oil do it now and understand this highway mileage is equivalent to 10 percent of city driving so if i drive a thousand miles there and a thousand miles back that's two thousand miles almost all in the highway that's equivalent to 200 miles in the city so you can make your oil change go further out instead of changing it every four or five thousand you could change it at eight or nine if all you were doing was highway driving but change it before you get on the road and here's another thing to check make sure your brake lights work the last thing you want on a trip is someone slamming into you because your brake lights don't work and they don't know you're stopping make sure all your lights work your headlights too i understand the headlights and fog lamps are for you to see but it's also for people to see you so they run into you if it's foggy or raining and of course bring a few tools and stuff in your trunk you want to be safe and i hate a dirty car so this is one of my favorite waterless car wash you can clean your car off by just spraying and wiping no water needed it's amazing stuff i met the chinese-american engineer who invented the stuff sharp guy it really works you don't want a dirty car hey you can get one of these and clean your car whenever you want it's a good idea if the birds crap on it or you get tire on the road clean it off as soon as possible so the bird acid doesn't eat through the paint the tire doesn't eat up your paint and stick on real easy to do just spraying wipes and i'm ultra prepared i got a tow rope in case something bad happens got all kinds of stuff i got a jump boost now i got a new battery so i doubt i'm going to use it but what the heck you might as well be prepared i got various wrenches and sockets a good air compressor even a fire extinguisher because hey you're not the only one on the road what if you come up on a fire you might be able to save somebody's life with a little fire extinguisher and realize one thing gently won't cost you anything to use the extinguisher because if you're out there and you help rescue someone almost all the state fire departments will refill your extinguisher free because you save somebody with it and if you want your car to look good your headlights to last forever and be able to see how them bright get some of this plexus it's a great plastic polisher the best i've ever found it was made for planes in the beginning you just polish it wipe it and polish it till it's clear look at that one of the best things about this plexus is it's anti-static so you know your car gets covered with dust really fast that's because the dust is electric static it's attracted to the car this makes it neutral so the dust doesn't bond on as easily now as i said i'm taking a trip to visit my elder son and the other grandkids but i'm bringing stuff with me because i'm gonna be looking at people's cars there so if you live boston norton rhode island you want to show me your car feel free you can always contact me via email really hard scotty kilmer gmail.com now i get an awful lot of emails so you might put as the title would like to visit you on the east coast so then i'll read all of those i can't read them all i get thousands of them every day so i can't read them all but i'd love to see people on the east coast show me their cars help them out with their car problems now i'm not bringing any of my motorcycles they're staying here in tennessee i'll get them going like come back in june i'll be bringing a bunch of tools with me and top that off my son in massachusetts has jacks and a lot of tools now he's not a mechanic because it's kind of like my case it's one of those skipper generation things my grandfather was a mechanic and my father he was skipped over he could barely tie his own shoes he liked playing bridge and gambling at the ponies at the racetrack but i'm mechanical and my oldest son he didn't want to be a mechanic but who knows i got two grandsons from them over there maybe they're gonna want to learn and the littlest one now who's like two he already goes in the garage all the time whenever he gets near the garage it says garage garage he wants to go inside so there's still some hope now you might ask why are we taking this matrix to boston instead of taking the lexus well here's why well they both have about 80 000 miles on them hey they're both gonna last quite some time but to begin with this matrix gets about 14 miles a gallon better gas mileage than the lexus does and i'm a cheapskate and let's face it east coast not too many parking spaces it's a smaller car a lot easier to park and when you think about somebody might see a big old texas lexus on the east coast and decide to carjack me thinking oh there's a rich guy and anyway i like music and i put a nice android in this so i can listen to my bluetooth music and anyway my wife you wouldn't want me messing up a trunk with all my tools i'm going to stick in there so i look out boston i'm headed your way and i'm bringing my skates the bruins seem to be on a downward slide and i still got a few good shifts left in me and here's some bonus questions and answers cash money says scotty i got an o3 civilian crown vic i want to know if there's anything special i'd have to do when installing a throttle body spacer well you know if you're talking about just replacing it because the old one's cracked no you just unbolt it bolt the new one out now if you're talking about increasing the distance i would not advise doing any of that stuff because if you're going to change it you would have to have a pro reprogram the thing to make it run right and the problem with that is that's an o3 a lot of the o3s don't have that much programmability then you would actually have to buy another computer that a pro is if you want to make it into a racing car but if you're just replacing it because it's cracked no just disconnect the battery and then take everything apart you disconnect the battery so you don't short anything out and put it all back together and make sure you know it's a what a 18 year old crown vic so be careful with the plastic pieces when you take them apart let's say you got a vacuum line it won't come off of plastic sensors look vacuum lines are cheap the sensor's not get a razor slice the vacuum lines and then take them off so then you won't crack the plastic and all you got to do is buy a new rubber vacuum line and they are cheap you can get them at autozone any place by the foot for practically nothing so if that's the case you can't get things off cut the lines off and then just replace the vacuum line so you don't break expensive plastic parts big cap 189 says i got an o9 mercury sable week ago the power steering at a catch so i had the power steering pump replaced with a remand pump seemed a lot better but a week after it's starting to get stiff spots again like before the fact that you put a remanufactured pump on it went away and then it came back that generally tells me it's probably not the steering rack but it's the pump itself because if it was a rack you put another pump on it would still do the same exact thing i never ever buy remanufactured pumps for my customers now if they're crazy i'll tell them you buy the pump i'll put it on i guarantee i install it correctly but i won't guarantee you that it's going to work correctly because it's a remanufactured pump those babies can put upwards of 600 pounds per square inch pressure very rarely are they rebuilt correctly i will only install new ones myself so if i were you what the heck take it back wherever you bought it get another one and pray that one was built better because the racks are uber expensive to replace then you got to pay an alignment shop to realign it's a very big job and you got the same problem there you want to buy a new rack it'll be thousands of dollars so then what do people buy remanufactured racks they can be just as crappy as the remanufactured pumps kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place there so if you never want to miss another one of my new car repair videos remember to ring that bell [Music]
