this is doug d murrow and today i'm going to talk about cars under 50 000 that are going up in value i wanted to make this video because i it struck me the other day that when people make which cars are going to go up in value videos they're usually focused on expensive cars where not everybody can afford it even if you want to participate in some of that cars going up in value world so i want to make a video about cars that are relatively affordable that i think are still going to go up in value so let's do it before i get started be sure to check out cars and vids which is my enthusiast car auction website for cool cars from the modern era now with free listings you can list your car for free and auction it on cars and bids and we've had some great sales recently including this beautiful b8 audi s4 and nagoro blue which sold for 38 500 this fantastic tesla roadster which sold for more than 86 thousand dollars and this wonderful lexus ls 430 ultra luxury which brought over 30 000. if you're looking to buy or sell a cool enthusiast car from the modern era the 1980s and up cars and bids is the place to do it check it out at carsandbids.com okay cars under 50 000 that are going to go up in value obviously i want to make a little disclaimer here i don't think you should buy these instead of like buying stock market or housing or anything like that i don't think cars generally are good investment because they're costly to own you got to put them somewhere they're in you got to pay insurance you got to pay for fuel maintenance repairs all that stuff but it still makes sense to want a card that's going to go up in value as you own it because even though you know it's not a great investment it's better than a car depreciating and so there's something to that so let's talk about cars under 50 000 that are going to go up in value at least the ones i think and i've got this list in no particular order i'm just gonna kind of talk so here's what i got okay first off the dodge viper specifically the first and second gen dodge vipers that was the original came out in 92 and was sold 395 and the second gen was 96 to o2 these cars are already kind of going up in value and the especially the second gen models are probably over 50 grand and they may be permanently over 50 grand at this point but early ones are still not and i'm perpetually surprised by this i don't understand why early dodge vipers are still in the 30s they're very cool they're totally iconic i think the real problem is they're not that usable they didn't come with roofs or windows they were disastrous cars but they're cool v10 manual transmission amazing look and style and i personally think that those cars are poised to go up in value especially because the vipers in general are having sort of a value renaissance and if you can pick one up for under 50 grand i think long term you will appreciate it and you'll enjoy owning a viper as i did uh okay next up on this list under 50 000 cars going up in value srt cars early srt cars that would be the jeep grand cherokee srt8 and like the dodge magnum srt8 these are probably my best picks for this maybe neon srt4 is also these cars were the original srt vehicles and the way they did it back then was just take a simple car and throw a massive engine in it that was just the formula and it worked out well those were cool cars i especially love that original grand cherokee srt8 these cars had big power they were pretty basic they're easy to maintain own and work on and frankly they were pretty rare it was the very beginnings of the srt brand not a lot of people they didn't have a big brand name brand following behind them like they do now with hellcats and the challenger wasn't even on sale at the time so it wasn't quite the following that it is now but um but so they didn't make as many but they're still cool and fast and fun and i think especially unmodified kind of unmessed with examples of these cars are going to go up in value and kind of get the feel of like fun muscle cars that were pretty emblematic of that era all right next up cars under 50 grand going up in value this is an obvious one bmw m3 and specifically the e36 m3 and the e46 m3 i've been shocked uh in the last year on cars and bids watching e36 and e46 m3s go up in value already and i think they can go higher the e46 m3 is especially surprising when i was actually only maybe five six seven years ago a cheap e46 m3 was like an eight thousand dollar craigslist used car these days to get an e46 m3 for eight grand you're buying a 220 000 mile automatic with uh accident history and maybe it's a convertible and it's probably been poorly modified these cars have really started to go up stick shift coupes late ones are really desirable that's not all that surprising to me the s54 powertrain although it had its issues was always a powerful motor and it doesn't really surprise me that those cars have have kind of taken off it was the last kind of real analog fun you know six cylinder sort of the old bmw ethos the car that has surprised me that has gone up more in value is the e36 which was the bmw the three series was sold from 92 to 98 and the m3 was like 95 to 99 that car always got a bad rap in the united states because the us models were detuned they were not as nice 240 horsepower a lot of them had automatics a lot of them were convertibles which people didn't want the time and so as a result those m3s were not they were kind of languishing in the 10 to 15 000 range for a long time that is no longer true those cars have really started to pick up in value they've really started to come up and i can see them going higher and higher i think as modern cars come out that are more automatics more hybrids more electric larger people go back and look at these older cars and kind of nostalgia eyes them and those cars i think will continue to rise the e36 especially has a long way to go because you can still pick nice ones up for 12 to 18 grand but i don't think you'll be able to forever okay next one this is a car under 50 000 going up in value pretty clear to me the e55 amg mercedes this is both versions of the e55 amg so that would be the w210 which was sold from 99 to o2 but also the w211 which was sold from 03 to 6. those cars are great they're excellent cars i had both i had well i had an e55 the original one a 2001 and then i had a w210 but a d63 um those are amazing cars and i think the e55s specifically are becoming especially desirable for a couple reasons number one the powertrain is reliable the m113 v8 is a well-known reliable engine and these cars used a variation of it with a little bit more power initially non-supercharged was like 360 horses from 9902 and then they did a supercharged version with 469 horsepower and that car is amazing and i think what's happening is people are starting to get nostalgic for these 90s and early 2000s cars people are starting to get nostalgic for early amg cars before they went to turbos and popping exhausts and giant wheels and people like these because they're known to be reliable and i think that these e55 amgs are going to specifically become desirable sought after mercedes-benz old vehicles um even in a sea of other amg models i think people will gravitate towards e55s and they're very special cars especially the w211s they had a lot of power they were subtly styled they were reliable by mercedes and amg standards they're good cars and i'm already starting to see them climb up a little bit on cars and bids it was not long ago you could get for 12 grand the nicest 2001 e55 in the world those days are long gone and prices are starting to come up and i think they're going to go higher as people start to get more into this era and more into the fact that these were reliable and special car okay next up another car under 50 grand going up in value pains me to say it but the range rover classic so this is the range rover that was sold basically from the 1970s all the way through 95. and frankly the next generation range rover was starting to go up too that was the p38 they called it which was sold from 95 basically 96 through 2002. those p-38s are horrible cars to own i'm going to just tell you they are terribly unreliable they will cause you tons of problems at heartache but they're beautiful they're really attractive cars and i know how bad these cars are i've owned two different range rovers many land rovers i know how bad they are and even i browse p38 listings and say hey could i yeah maybe have you had overlooked the problems they're cool but the range rover classics are also cool they're not as unreliable they don't have as much that can go wrong and the powertrain was just used for so long that it's easy to find people who can work on and replace stuff those cars are again already going up really nice p 38 and range rover classics are already selling for over 50 000 that's not all that uncommon but um you're starting to see even kind of average cars go for that i mentioned that i know this well because i sold a 95 range rover classic which is the pinnacle year long wheelbase in the correct color which is like a dark green uh for nine grand back in 2012 i just wanted to be rid of it and rid of it i was i think that could probably be the low 20s now so these cars are coming up in value um and they're cool that's the other thing it's a cool old suv with an old-school high suv seating position you sit above everything you can see everything glass everywhere and they're neat cars and yeah they have problems and so you got to know that going in i mean these cars are going up in value but you're going to spend enough that you're not going to make money on one of these but they're cool and if you want something that's kind of cool old school these are these are special cars and i now i'm at the point where i turn my head when i see a range rover classic and point at or take a picture or whatever they've gotten to that status in my mind okay next one cars under 50 grand going up in value this one is obvious to anybody who's paying attention to the market right now but that would be the e60 bmw m5 so the m5 with the v10 it was made from 06 to like 2010 and also the f10 bmw m5 which was the next one with the twin turbo v8 both of these cars are difficult to own the e60 m5 difficult is an understatement they're unreliable they're challenging they have a lot of flaws and problems but they're also a naturally aspirated v10 manual transmission if you got one bmw sedan rear wheel drive that's cool and i think a lot of people are realizing hey look i gotta buy this car i'm gonna solve the reliability issues it's expensive it's time consuming but if i do that then i have this like really special car like no one's ever gonna make a manual v10 bmw or anybody ever again and so that's a really cool thing um the f10 is also a similar situation they sold those with manual transmissions they had even more power they had even more technology they had even more luxury but they didn't feel that much bigger they're still fun cars to drive they're still enjoyable and exciting and i think that those two are going to continue to creep up in value as time goes on and what happens with cars like this is they start to get into the hands of a different type of enthusiast who doesn't care that much about the cost to own a good example this is the ferrari 355 which for a long time was a 50 to 70 000 used car because no one wanted to pay for all the servicing and issues now nice 355's are selling for 200 000 and that's reached a different buyer who doesn't care as much about spending 10 grand on a major service or 15 to change the headers because the car is so valuable and that's what's going to happen to these m5s nice e60 m5s are already hitting the 50 000 price point and they're gonna continue to go up to a point where spending eight ten grand to do the rod bearings isn't that big of a deal if it's a permanent fix and so i think those cars will continue to go up they're very special once you get past the issues which i think will happen more and more okay next up cars under 50 grand that are going up in value here's a car under 25 that's gonna go up in value i think fourth generation toyota forerunner mark my words this is a car that nobody is paying attention to right now so this is the foreigner that came out in 2003 and went away in like i don't know 2012 2010 somewhere around there this is the overlooked forerunner everybody knows the original two four runners are pretty cool the first gen especially everybody loves those the third gen is famous it was the most reliable they made 10 zillion of them they're not very valuable unless you find a really nice one but even then they're not incredibly valuable but they're everywhere in the car's famous the current 4runner which is the 5th gen is also famous because it's the trd pro and it's cool off-road capabilities and they did all the cool tv pro colors and everybody knows about that but nobody really discusses the fortune it gets kind of a bad rap for one thing it was a little weird looking it didn't quite have the same kind of macho styling as some of the others it also kind of went a little more towards the family car and less towards the brawny suv territory but you could get these with a v8 the only forerunner ever offered with a v8 so you get a v8 four wheel drive that's a special car especially you can find one with low mileage and i'm seeing on cars and bids these four runners should be more money they just should but the market that's not where they are with the market we're selling them for good money sellers are happy buyers right everybody's into it but i'm looking at these thinking that card deserves more money when you see what a 5th gen 4runner goes for these 4th gens are kind of under the radar and i wouldn't be surprised long term if 4th gen 4 runners do creep up more than we might think because they're pretty cool especially in that v8 four wheel drive configuration okay next up cars under 50 grand going up in value here's an interesting one you might not be considering subaru wrx sti hatchbacks from the second gen sold in the u.s so that was like 2008 through 2014. those cars are climbing we've seen them on cars and bids they do incredibly well subaru has given up on the hatchback or wagon version of the wrx and the sti um they stopped making them after 14 they never have gone back at least in the united states they do still offer in overseas but it doesn't come here and subaru told me they got no plans to bring him here so i don't think we're in too much of a danger of it coming um the cool thing about this car is that it was the end of the line and they did an sti version so it was like 300 horsepower turbo force they were fast fun cars and practical and it was really the only way you could get a hot hatchback wrx and it was the only way you could get a hot hatchback sti and so this is kind of a cool car and i think long term these are going to go up especially because so many of them have been modified and questionably like you know the way they were modified when they were five six-year-old cars that's what happens to subarus but then when they become 15 20 25 year old cars and people start to appreciate him a bit more that changes the calculus a little bit and then it's like damn i wish so many of these weren't wrecked with like bad mods and people sold the stock parts whatever i think if you find nice ones of this car now nice examples you will find a car that will be increasing in value and be doing good things over the long term and at the very least it's not really going to go down they just made a very finite number of these and especially if you can find them in good condition they're rare in special cars okay last car on this list strange one that is going up in value clear to me the original porsche cayenne so the cayenne that came out in 03 and was sold through like 2010 and then there was a facelift in like oh 809 i don't know why but these cars have really started to come up there was a time where it was like a 5 000 used car that is clearly no longer the case people like them i think because they had a lot of off-road capabilities these cars had low range the two-speed transfer case some of them had even more off-road capability than that air suspension lift them and used off-roaders tend to go up in value and also they made turbo versions and even a turbo s version with like 520 horsepower and so you look at this like an off-roader with 520 horsepower from porsche that's pretty cool it deserves to be worth more than nine grand and people are starting to really pay up for these um cayenne turbos cayenne turbo s's cayenne gts's particularly manual transmissions but even just regular cayenne assets and then people are doing off-road builds which i think are incredibly cool and i kind of see this market continuing to rise it's the same thing that always happens with all other off-roaders land cruisers and g-wagons they either level off and don't depreciate or they kind of increase a little bit as off-roaders want them and they're hard to find nice ones and i think that's going to continue happening in the kite which i can't believe i'm saying that's a car i never thought would go up in value but the market is proving me wrong people are kind of coalescing around these early kinds and the second gen cayenne wasn't as off-road capable it was a much better vehicle but it couldn't do that and so porsche kind of left this market behind and thus there's a finite pool of these off-roadable cayennes and a lot of people used them and drove them and so finding a nice one is kind of getting harder and harder which will send prices up for cayenne's i guess so there you go there is my list of cars under 50 000 that i think are gonna go up in value um there really are some you don't have to spend 250 000 to get a car that i think might appreciate just remember it won't appreciate like stocks or the housing market or many other investments you can make but it's still better than losing money on a car unless you get one of the range rovers i recommend it in which case you will lose money [Music]
