Haying in Montana, Part 1, Mowing with a Swather

[Music] [Music] not a bad view of the mountains just to let you know this walker air conditioner's broken and it's about 218 degrees in here last look at the thermometer drink lots of water window don't open any more than this i forgot a bungee cord that would allow me to open up the door and keep the brace though but probably isn't safe anyways last thing in the world while i do fall out of this contraption while it's running so i'm just going to sit here and sweat for the next few hours to drink a lot of [Music] water [Music] i'm sitting down in the shade right now i'm really thirsty and i need a buckskin and i don't mean the horsey kind it's hot dusty and dry you'll notice at the speed i usually run it at about five or six you notice it's like really big speakers they go up to 12. that's right it goes up to 12. and if you're driving in 12 you're a maniac oh my god that was bouncy i think i just ran over a badger i don't know what the hell that was or a badger hole but that was bouncy i'll slow it out a little bit side down there in the bottom that like badger you see so oh okay one two three blades and there's one stuff back in there still yeah these are kind of a pain in the ass because this bar right here that's the sickle drive yeah anywhere because it sheared everything and uh so this these are a little more of a pain to go on there uh we should have all the stuff um so one thing to be super careful of like especially when that end comes off is this whole sickle blade will just slide now so you don't want to get your fingers anywhere in there because that whole thing you'll have to shift this around but okay um yeah because usually it's attached to that and you break one somewhere else the rest all oh there's one that's just a clip on there never mind that one's good yeah so we'll just uh we got stuff to do these are all sections in here it's a selection and we'll grab a few because there's longer and shorter ones depending on where you're going and you've got to kind of tap them in dick put a six point socket in here in here another thing to do is like once you if you bust some of this they're going to switch it like pull to a spot that you've cut in a short grass because you'll drop and if you drop it in a big windroll it's like you spend an hour looking around goddamn bolt um oh that's a knuckle buster's on [Music] all there [Music] [Applause] [Applause] going slow because uh this is really thick down here in the river bottom and it's really hot inside this swather that i'm now calling the sweat lodge because the ac doesn't work i think i told you that before i think that's the inside i think that's the cab temperature not the engine temp [Applause] what's it doing um so this stuff must be just super tough down in the bottom what it's doing is it's not wanting to auger it over so it's um not missing any teeth on here but so when it comes it comes around here to push it to the auger it's not the auger's not catching it and bringing it over stopping right there and then this is getting too much built up on it it's stopping it okay and that's when that that's when you're getting the smoke is because that belt's just burning burning through because it's dragging pretty close you can see the fingers are running pretty close but it's still just hanging up right here and not pushing it all the way up um and it seems like it's only on this side i heard something sounded like a gun on this side well that's actually a conditioner so what happens is when stuff's getting fed through that conditioner it's got springs to open up for more so it's banging it open when it gets a big slop okay so when it gets too much slamming this right here and that's okay the conditioner will just do that it's starting to ball it's going to do it worse like this grass there's a bunch of that sedgy and stuff down here that might do it worse on that you might also think about going the opposite way and keeping this out a little bit so go nascar style and then yeah you might have to try that which then it's totally weird turning the other way for some reason but super slow if you see that header starting to really cook cook like yeah you can notice it like starting to like get chopping them or a jerk um just pick it up and let it let it clear okay then you should be able to drop back down and keep going and i wouldn't worry about it backing up but just stop your forward progress and pick the head up let it clear out because you'll see it just sitting right here the same grass so just because usually it should be working its way over you'll notice it just sitting right there okay um and if it's just sitting it was doing that to me yesterday and only on this side i don't quite know why all right well i'll run it that way then yeah that see if that does it blow this thing up i see pop of smoke i'm like okay we're shutting her down yeah try going the other way and just keeping some hay out of this side you know what i mean like cut so it's in here someplace okay and it only started doing it down here it just that was it just right there right through there i'm almost wondering if it's not going to get better because if you look at this back here i noticed that when i was walking through it's just really thick kind of swampy grass right here like all of this yeah which is actually that's like uh i think that's like kentucky bluegrass um in this stuff i don't think it likes feeding that that real fine tough stuff in through there it's just not working well on that well i think once you're because over there i don't think it's like that i don't think it's over here i think it's this path right here okay so well if it i mean if it's working good over there then just go back to what you're doing but yeah it's look like this then it's just something to watch out for okay yeah i'll run it that way [Music] it's hot i think the gopro is even overheated [Music] [Music] [Music]
