hello youtubers in this video you're going to be shown how to discover something that may be common in this tool this is a Harbor Freight four by six bandsaw it's a horizontal and a vertical you're also going to be learning how to mitigate that problem if you get it it's going to be done through filing and polishing that you can do you're going to be doing preventative maintenance because of the possible situation which is going to extend the life of your tool immensely the other thing we're going to be doing is we're going to be learning how to change out lube it was incidental to the problem that was discovered when I did unpacking but there's no other YouTube out on how to lube but change out the lube on this on this tool that I know of anyways and then lastly for those people that are interested I will be showing you how to solve a problem of horrible CAD computer-aided design by giving you a reference that the amazing application is free it resides only on your computer there's no cloud crap you can use it anywhere and applications are being written to it everywhere around the world I hope this video is beneficial to you and it's dedicated to all those other people who put out YouTube videos on products tools that I have I say so much money and so much time I've never done a video YouTube video before so this is my first one around and so excuse certain things I only have an iPad for videotaping and stuff but the editing that you'll see is all free again it's another program that's free so hope you enjoy the video now until you find Oh you you gotta be sure hello there are youtubers I just bought this four by six Harbor Freight horizontal vertical and saw and this is like I just barely put it together as you can see it's never been used but what I wanted to show you was there's a lot of good things about this machine I think but one of them that is not so good is I'm going to show you the gear box here now I just opened this up and immediately begin to see the amount of the that is actually the sediment from the gears that are grinding against each other obviously this metal will eat away at this brass and that's proper engineering but of course you have to have a very good mesh very good alignment in here for the brass not to wear quickly I've never use this I it actually as you can see here that's from the original manufacturer the way they tie that electrical cord so I what happened was I begin to cry you know this just did not feel right when I was putting together the belt and it so sure enough I got in there and you can see how much how much play is going on therefore even begins to move and I mean right now I can not even move this because the metal of the worm shaft is wearing away on the brass worm gear so the worm path here is wearing the worm gear it's amazing I can't I cannot move this at all and you can see right in there I'm going to try to hold this deal you can see why that is right there it's not even making it's barely making contact right in here we're on the end of that tooth is going to just and this this here is as oh my gosh there's a lip they never burnished the ends so on the ends of this worm shaft it is sharp as hell and there is a lip let me see if I can show you that lip there's actually an extremely sharp lip on the top of this of these gears they never burnish them so this is just chewing there you can see on that one I think right over here you can see the raised there you know from the machining they never burnish that so that is razor sharp on worm gear so be prepared to go inside the gear box here and do an inspector I suggest you go when you buy this into the gear box and do what I'm doing and you will you don't save yourself a lot of headache later by finishing up really on the machining of this that that I don't know if you can see in here it's see the debris in there on this the there's debris in here and and I'm going to flash this flashlight in case you can see the metal flakes in there I don't know if you can but you know there's they're in there believe me I'm sorry I can't show you the metal flaking like I am able to see maybe you can see some of that certainly on on this gear you can see the debris that's not a good thing so I'm going to have to go in there and burnish those gears to keep it from just chewing away the brass in nothing flat okay youtubers let me explain the video here may not be a so it may not flow as well as as it might otherwise I had not intended to make a video on this for you to I I looked up how to change the oil on this unit I didn't find a video on changing the oil and I was scared if the oil splashes out a big ol mess whatever so I looked it up and this is what started out this video if you look at the instructions it will tell you position the body frame in the horizontal position as seen in figure 5 on page 18 okay fine so you go to page eighteen figure 500 and it shows it on the vertical position not too reassuring if you haven't done it before however if you examine this picture what you see is that these three holes these three holes it's in the horizontal position and what is nice about this up to their credit this oil did not splash out it's angled such and the amount of oil that is designed for is such that this cavity in here is the amount of oil that is appropriate for this gearbox so the oil doesn't leak out when the bandsaw is in the horizontal position a 140 weigh gear oil well you know we found the problem on this and this is the item number of this bandsaw you know just to make and so I just didn't want to be a pissy whiner on this I wanted to do something to return the favor of these guys that are doing these great videos to help people out on the youtubes so we have the problem that right on the top and the bottom of this worm shaft when this was machined they did not burnish off a deeper or burnish off these and it's so sharp and it's just going to just wear away this this softer metal here so what you can do is that's what I did I have a fine file here that this is polished and furthermore besides the polishing of this this in is rounded okay now I uh you know I rounded that out before doing this cuz I don't want to gas anything in here and in turn make more sharp edges so position your the beginning of your gear worm and you take the poly side towards the shop and just start going along okay and you just have to go along at this and as you go along just make sure you're doing the job and it's nice and smooth on there after you do the talk of course you gotta flip it around and come around and do the bottom I might be okay youtubers so what I'm trying to do is give you the best shot I possibly can of just how incredibly bad look at that sediment earth this is real I have not I have not even file down the work shaft yet the this can you see that sentiment down in there this is from the original I haven't filed this down yet this is incredible totally totally unacceptable and this is what you need to watch out for it will just greatly reduce life of this tool well I kind of lied I I'm actually I couldn't take it I had to do this the right way so I'm using this emery to give it a real polish on the in doubt you have to understand that the blade is traveling this way and in traveling this way it causes the gear to come down and then you know transfers the energy to the band here to come this way and so with this traveling down bringing this these cogs down you have the important thing is underneath here is what you really need polished and that's what I was doing here I make the V out of it wash this out also and I'm just using gas and a brush and I'm getting the entire cavity I can't take this I've got to clean it out and then don't forget when you clean this you want it you also want to clean the lid that goes on that and I'll show you about tightening these screws down you might be surprised with this gasket here about tightening that down I'll show you that in a minute but soon you'll buy Oh
