I feel like he's really over-complicating the sound for the sake of eliminating a 30ms audio delay for just handful of users who both have the high-end hardware and the sensitive perception for that sort latency. If this was a Guitar Hero clone I'd understand this concern, but he admitted that sound isn't a core part of the gameplay. The mantra "worse is better" definitely applies here.
