[Music] so you didn't think that would go together did you ladies and gentlemen how you doing michael pomizano here and i want to say thank you to all of you that watched that kendrick lamar video before where i was completely ice-cold had never seen anything of him before and obviously got some things right but i missed a lot of things like the marvin gaye part and so many other uh things but you were so kind and supportive i just want to thank you evan c says please don't listen to the ignorant comments you may or may not receive on the video music is music art is art i dedicate much of my time to guitar playing but it's a tool to create music guitar doesn't make inherently better art that's the truth so even though these say like guitar teacher reacts it's about the music and it's about art it's about encouraging everyone to invest in themselves and get what's inside out because only you can make it so he goes on to say if you want to do a live reaction because you guys know i like it live he says do i from snl the passion is felt through the screen i got it queued up this is ice cold let's hit the button here bam ladies and gentlemen my man kendrick lamar [Music] yes [Music] [Music] i look [Music] okay [ __ ] yeah all right i don't know why you can't see his eyes but uh it must be the lighting so many cool things happening here uh musically let's see if we can't get something love the james brown start where you're talking to the band live love this and so everybody's got to have the flow already in their ears watch the tv right dedicated to the homies in the pen hit me so just the back beating the random snare let's see what we got [Music] all right so you got [Music] all right so it sounds like a one to a four and two major chords so i just kind of was like looking around what what i'm kind of hearing are not full chord shapes high parts so like an e flat to an a flat but you're getting this little [Music] so for each one you're adding the nine so it's add nine now again all you out there that know this tune you might be like this is wrong please tell me what's accurate in the comments right this is this is ice cold but this is what i'm hearing just a one to a four e flat to a flat oh [Music] [Music] how many times the city making me promise this so i promised this now wait what's happening here uh uh uh that that that that's that's not um [Music] okay all right all right okay so i don't want to take away from kendrick but as as a musician who's played in a bunch of like you know a bunch of had to learn a bunch of parts like this before i i always feel like i have to get some of the parts before i can really focus on everything else um his energy is out of control the his his vocal lines just hit it's it's so rhythmic that the subdivisions he's doing all the subdivisions for you it would be a dream to play in a band with a vocalist like this which is basically like hi-hats the the whole thing because the groove is so palpable because each one of each one of his each one of his you know utterances if you everything that comes out is so sharp and so distinct and so clearly all groove right that that it like you can't not feel it you can't not feel it um like i think in the last video i said something like the funk is in the silence like it's so true like i like i hear this and when there's a break in there it's still going because it's so strong regardless of that uh what i had before is i had e flat major [Music] but now once i hear the bass it's so i generally generally have the speakers down low so that i can um still have the mic and not have it bleed but it sounded like there's actually a c in the bass going to an f in the bass so that would be the same upper triad so it'd be c over e flat so this is a c minor 7 chord and this would not be an add 9 this would now be a sus 4 and then when it goes to this a flat it's actually an f minor chord right and you get this and then you got this same thing where it's now a sus4 [Music] so this is your f minor triad like this so maybe so f so f minor 7 right add a sus4 so that's what you get when you turn the speakers down low you don't always hear it sometimes or maybe or maybe a change [Music] and i want you to listen listen to his his flow if you will and the hi-hats they're like finger cuffs please [Music] [Music] and that's the thing like when you play in a band to me the hi-hats the subdivisions in the hi-hats even when you leave a lot of space that's really the where the answers to all your groove questions are you know the kick pushes the snare releases and it's it's the hi-hat that really um that's really the thing um because that's what creates the feel in between the push and release right and that's where all that's where all the answers to your questions are and it's like the more i watch of him the way he he's he is his role in the band and we haven't even gotten to the lyrics i know i know his role in the band is is to be that rhythmic subdivision that leads it's almost like the hi-hat is like a lead instrument right where it's it's it's so james brown-esque i just i can't stress that enough it's so funky and if you just watch his body language right here i mean he's just [Music] when you're looking at me um [Music] [Music] yes yes oh this is this is great this is what i'm talking about this is this is some deep nasty funk okay so it's out of nowhere you get to hit me after all all the big vocal parts and you like drop into a half time feel right and then it's and then it's the it's still it's still that that triplet like sextuplet kind of vibe and he's just it's just i'm telling you like he is the the the subdivision undercurrent which is locking all of this in that we're going back ladies and gentlemen we're watching this drop again myself walk down from sea [Music] [Music] in my body [Music] wow [Music] the bass and drums are on fire right now this i can't believe they dropped in with that type of beat and let them run like this why know why because you can do it it should do it [Music] is [Music] love that a lot of the drummers coming around like like all the little like off off gospel like hits off off for me but you know like like but then making eye contact with the bass player for the hit here [Music] see that's the stuff man i i just i've always wanted to be in a band that could do [ __ ] like this i mean it's just it's just true um i know the focus of this video is kendrick right i get it i get it but as someone who like you know me just being me this band is [ __ ] great this is a serious serious band every piece of this is amazing um [Music] it's just like all these little parts man i know i keep starting to stop it all these little parts it's so james brown-esque where it's like you get this one part and it's a perfect part play the perfect part listen i'm gonna hit the button you're gonna hear the one guitar doing like to do and then the synth part comes in like but and then that part stops so many perfect pieces to make this one big puzzle [Music] [Music] special tell me it's one of the best things i've ever seen okay um uh uh um what i'm about to say is going to seem very strange but maybe for those of you that that that have that that can look at things through a few different lenses will understand what i'm saying uh i feel similarly to like the first times i i really listened to tool so brace yourself here's what i mean when i was listening to tool for the first few times i knew two things were happening i knew one that i was going to be hooked on something from a musicianship level that that just stood that that man it it struck it struck the nerve i couldn't put words to it like i didn't fully understand why but i knew it was significant i knew it was i knew it was the musicianship was out of control this is phenomenal phenomenal musicianship okay from everybody in the band and kendrick is like truly deeply to me i always try to think where do i fit in where do i come in instead of what do i play right so so first so the first order of business is like you have to come in somewhere and then what you say is what you say but you have to the actual sound has to be made at a certain point he is the soul he is he is the the internal subdivision that's what i mean of the soul of the groove okay he he is that it's such a james brown vibe you know uh that it's just it's it's just rhythm first so that's the first thing it's just a rhythmic overload and so many perfect pieces okay the other part that i feel like this the first time i felt that when i listened to tool was that i knew there was something very profound happening in the lyrics very on purpose very very powerful scripted strong message that that i had to get kind of past the musicianship to start listening especially in tool it was very odd time stuff it didn't it wasn't something i was used to hearing words flow like over bars and like in different time signatures um uh and and that's how i feel with this like this isn't different time standards but i'm not used to hearing lyrics come that fast uh and that sharp that anger that rhythmically angular to that i'm not used to deciphering what he's actually saying right um and that's just that's just true and you put those two things together and like like who who summed it up for me before uh music is music this is k evan c art is art i dedicate much of my time playing guitar but it's a tool to create music guitar doesn't make inherently better art i this feels like it like a complete singular artistic expression it really really does and like if i look up the lyrics which i haven't um well i'm not going to read i'm not i'm not going to read all this maybe i will i'm gonna do that on my time um there's a couple that that that that stuck out with me you know i i put a bullet in the back of the head of the police illuminated by the hand of god boy don't seem shy one day at a time always one day at a time um i just reading the syntax it's it's so hard for me to put that in the sh right like that like i'm gonna have to go back and do this and so anyway the whole point of this little thing is that like i felt like i haven't had to really do that and feel excited about doing that of putting the words to it since like i got into tool and i don't think tool and kendra could be more different except that it's such a clear purposeful craft of art an expression of art but it's a craft this is not this is not something that isn't polished and on purpose it's super high energy highest level musicianship specific no specific parts every piece of it is on purpose all the intent is there and the energy and the and the and the the whatever it just you could just it just flows out of it this was awesome i've always wanted to play in a band like this kendrick love it uh evan c love you thanks for all of you that like subscribe tell me what you want next in
