how did that go oh fishy fishy in the brook oh please oh please jump on my hook [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] what's up yinz guys welcome back to fishing pa with ryan reed a special guest today mr cody phi how you guys doing so we're super excited about today um we're actually going to bring you guys an interactive lake breakdown so where we're at today is we're in beautiful clearfield county uh we're up near the pa wilds in the pa wilds and we're here on kerwinsville lake so cody can you tell us a little bit about kerwinsville lake uh kerbinsville lake was constructed as a flood control zone in uh the years 1963. i was constructed by the army corps of engineers first and foremost like you said it was a flood control zone but secondary it's a recreation area there's 790 acres of water here um roughly 2 000 acres of boatable water but what's considered curveball lake is the 790. a lot of good fishing opportunities here kevinsville lake like i said also a recreation area we you know have a campground um you know a lot of a beach area for swimming and there's a dog park and there's an activities park with volleyball and corn hole and horseshoe pits pavilions to rent for your family while you're here do different activities such as birthdays and weddings and stuff like that so that's that's pretty well what kirwinsville lake recreation area is um but we're gonna focus on a little bit of everything today i guess yeah so i can speak to the campground too because i was up here fished a tournament with you on this lake earlier this year um and i actually stayed in the campground and it was a really awesome to get out and cast at night but there looks like there's plenty of space for family and and just generally good camping here as well so pretty cool area um again excited to be out here today we're going to do a little bit of fishing as well yeah we're going to chase some we're going to chase some tiger muskies so all right so bottom line is kerwinsville lake has lots of different opportunities for you guys to come out here and do some fishing as well as camping spend some time with family and that's what we're going to try to show you today so we're going to get some footage of the lake cody's going to give us some tips we're going to do a little bit of fishing and we're going to see how this thing shakes out yeah all right fun all right let's go let's go get it all right before we go ahead and get started on this late breakdown for kerwinsville we got to give a shout out kaelin thomas kalyn thomas we're gonna give you a shout out know you're an up and coming muskie fisherman yep young guy throwing baits around respect that kalyn keep grinding keep fishing buddy awesome to see the young guys and super pumped for you to get out there and catch the muskies it's always a blast having caitlyn around absolute die hard muskie fisherman um not many 10 to 12 year olds out there that are doing school projects on uh frank sewick so shout out to kalyn all right let's go get it so where did we launch at this morning cody we launched right here at the boat ramp uh there's two ramps we launched at ramp number two um currently this will be your main lake region here and this darker blue stretch where the end of my pointer is is the main river channel it circles down around right here cuts back to this inside bend and then follows the outside bend around to where on paper right to this mark here is the end of carbonsville lake the rest of the water that we have is the west branch of the susquehanna river which is right through here headed toward the town of lumber city if you can see the blue the darker blue line that is the the main river channel uh the average depth of that river channel is anywhere between 10 to 30 feet and it gets shallower the further upstream that you you get all right just for a couple minutes i want to talk about the species that live in kerwinsville lake and then of course the west branch of the susquehanna so cody can you kind of allude to what types of species of fish are in this body of water uh the species range from walleye we have pickerel um we have tiger muskie uh that are stalked by the pennsylvania fish and boat commission also the nittany valley muskie alliance in october of 2019 introduced purebred muskie to this fishery large and smallmouth bass and then you start getting down into your forage based foods we got black and white crappie yellow perch we got carp um bluegill we start talking catfish we have channel catfish we have brown bullhead so guys you there's a lot of different species in kerwinsville lake there's a lot of angling opportunities for you guys to come out here and catch multiple species of fish there's a lot of good structure points in this lake as well too what about some of the structure here i know that there's really good weed beds there's some like weed flats up upstream a little bit that we had saw last time we were out yeah um speaking of the weeds we have milfoil and hydrilla and then we start getting into the man-made structure we have felt trees that are cabled from the bank we have brush boxes we have porcupine cribs we have man-made rock rubble piles we have black bass spawning boxes and then later this year we're actually going to be putting in more rock rubble piles and we're going to be coordinating with mike swartz of the fish and boat commission to do that project also with that project we're going to have the the penn state dubois uh terrestrial wildlife class come in and uh with miss rowan as the instructor she's going to bring her students in and they help us tremendously put these you know these structures in into the lake they're they're a vital point or a vital part of of of doing this yeah and that's those things are key whenever we talk about this man-made structure those elements we talk about those a lot in lake breakdowns those that fish habitat improvement plan by fish and boat is really critically important to what we do here in the state of pennsylvania so kerwinsville lake another opportunity for pa fish and boat to kind of come in here and help the fishery out give the fish somewhere to go somewhere to live somewhere to hide somewhere to relate to and then you guys can use that to locate and catch more fish arians guys we talked about the lake a little bit we gave you some good information about kerwinsville now what we want to do is jump into the map show you guys the hot spots show you guys some of the footage that we took while we're on kerwinsville today and uh hopefully you guys like this all right ends guys let's go ahead and jump right into the map and we're gonna scroll into kerwinsville lake and kerwinsville recreation area now a couple of things for you guys a couple things to note here number one we have a lot of information to review there's a lot of points of interest so we've got to talk quickly we've got to move quickly secondly longitude and latitude of these points of interest are not going to be a hundred percent accurate you know i'm not sitting here dropping them in the exact spots these are generalized areas for you guys to go out on the lake and find these points of interest yourself now where we're going to start here on kerwinsville lake and the west branch of the susquehanna i'm going to go ahead and just drill in to the main parking area now as far as these boat ramps go you're going to have boat ramp a here and you're going to have boat ramp b here really awesome spacious parking lot as you guys seen we've got docks here and another key element in this particular area is really one of our first fishing hot spots and that's the brake wall so scrolling into the brake wall you can see runs from boat ramp a around this little bend right here now when i was camping in this area this fishing hot spot of this break wall there were a lot of people fishing on this uh all evening into the night and roughly five feet of water with live bait they were catching panfish like bluegill crappy perch um they were catching catfish they were catching bass so there's a lot of different species of fish that move in here there's a lot of good weed cover in here and this is really the first hot spot when we're talking about kerwinsville lake so we're going to kind of move around the lake here just notice again you've got the boat ramp a and b you've got this awesome break wall in this area to fish from five feet of water and you've got the danger buoys out here for your boats to come in and out now as we work south here one thing you guys are going to notice right off the bat is the overflow campsite here this is where i had stayed when you guys talk to the camping area if you want to stay overflow you can get on one of these sites here right near the water first point of interest here is if we look out on the lake notice this rock rubble hump you've got 8 to 10 feet of water and then you've got future rock rubble humps you heard cody talk about this fishing boat is going to continue to add structure to this lake this is going to be a future area where more rock rubble humps are going to be put into the lake and this is where a lot of fish are going to relate to structure wise later on after those are implemented so as we work south here you've got this big weed bed that wraps all the way around five feet of water you've got catfish spawning boxes in tight to shore five feet of water and this weed bed and this weed edge kind of comes out here and wraps around the bottom side of the lake you've got future catfish spawning boxes going in down here you've got five feet of water around here and we've got more structure here 30 short vertical planks and we've got 20 brush box structures as well now note future 30 short vertical planks are going to be going in about 11 to 12 feet of water at some point this year or next year we also have 80 rock rubble humps that are currently in the lake and roughly 10 feet of water here so this is a really interesting part of the lake in this cove you have this really great weed bed that wraps all the way around and even the shoreline if you guys look at the shoreline here you're going to see a lot of felled trees so there's a lot of good timber structure on these shorelines that are going to hold all sorts of fish so as we work around the lake here again you've got these 80 rock rubble humps and 10 feet of water off of this weed bed you've got these 50 vertical planks and 75 vertical planks out here in the middle of the lake or towards the middle of the lake and as we work up this shoreline you guys are going to run into what is called the coal slide hot spot so now we're going to jump in and we're going to get a little explanation from mr cody phi on why the coal side hot spot is such a good spot to fish all right so talk to me about the cool slide so this is spot number one uh the coal slide uh like you said earlier it's a man-made lake and at one time this area was stripped this is actually not coal it's what they call bony um it's been left here for years they had talked about removing it at one time but at this time they don't want to remove it because they said that it's they'll disturb the water too much by doing so so they said it's best just to let it as is but for a number of years the coal slide has produced fish um and it's also it's produced fish of many species it's a good area for musky i've caught large and smallmouth bass in this area i've got perch and crappy in this area it's just a nice bottom here it's a rocky bottom in this area it transitions into a nice weed line on either side of the coal slide so it's just a natural place for fish to gravitate to and also the way the wind blows here typically it likes to push fish into this area of the lake just the way the wind is always blowing so this is always a hot spot for me to to fish when i come to germansville so we got the coal side right in front of us we got that rocky transitional bottom and we got good weeds all along the shoreline all right guys you heard it from cody gave you a nice little overview of that cool slide you got to see that pretty interesting stuff so as we move around the lake here again fell trees to your right it's really good weed bed cover here and again weeds recover these these other things like vertical planks or structure so we've got 50 75 vertical planks you've got this good weed bed cover as we work up towards the dam brush you've got 25 porcupine cribs you've got 50 porcupine cribs you've got good weed bed here again wrapped around porcupine cribs um out towards the middle of the lake here out this way you guys are gonna see 50 porcupine cribs in about 15-18 feet of water out here and you're going to see about 20 short vertical plank structures and 8 to 10 feet of water on this side of the lake again fish and boat according to that fish habitat improvement plan future 100 short vertical plank structures are going to be going in there relatively soon so jumping back to the other side of the lake here we've got 25 feet of water this kind of transitions you know out in this stuff you got 20 to 33 feet of water here and then we start seeing the river channel and the river channel is going to run down through here it's going to be a little bit deeper you're going to see 20 to 25 feet of water and you've got steak trees and porcupine cribs and more porcupine cribs and more steak trees and 15 to 19 feet of water out on this side of the dam breast so this is a very good area to focus on um as we work here we're going to work back into this corner near the dam breasts and this is going to be the dam breast corner hot spot so let's go ahead and jump back out to mr cody phi and he can give us an overview on why the dan brass corner is such an awesome place to fish so across the lake there we got the dam breast and that outflow goes directly into the west branch of the susquehanna river so there you go there's the dam um what is it so as far as that i know that that corner way down there on the other end of the lake if you guys can see that that corner is a hot spot for this lake so you got the the dam breasts a lot of lakes you guys control and cast the dam breast here's very similar to that but cody what makes that corner so special that the corner is a hot spot because the the way the bottom of the lake runs there's a nice steep drop there and the fish seem to lay off of that drop you know typically how i fish it is i'll put a bait down and drag down the face of that drop um usually the the bait holds down there 15 to 20 foot and it's always full of bait there's every time i'm here there's bait in that corner so it's a spot that i really like to target um as many others do as well all right so if you guys can tell we got a wind coming out of the north here at about 10 miles an hour and from my understanding this is a typical win for this lake right yeah this is uh it's either dead calm or this is what we get um so this is pretty standard so you get a north wind and that north wind pushes the bait fish to that corner there on the dam and also that shoreline all the way down there's really good weed structure through there you've got the brakes and the drops that cody was talking about you got this point over here and there's really good weed structure around that yes and you can hit some of the weed edges there's real good weed structure on that that little peninsula that gives out on the outflow and also there's a nice steep drop there as well that's right where the the main river channel comes through so that's an area where fish are tend to hold um they get up out of that that deep channel and they hold on that flat that's there um it's a proven producer all right guys so we've got this channel coming out here we're gonna wrap around the lake again you've got your vertical vertical plank structures on the left but up here along the dam breasts this is a very popular area to do some fishing so let's just so let's just jump out to some footage you guys can see what the dam looks like get a feel for this area get a feel for the water depth so as we worked across the dam there you get around this peninsula the peninsula shortens up you got three to five feet of water really solid weed bed off to here you've got some catfish spawning boxes you've got some future catfish spawning boxes going in there and again the weeds wrap around this peninsula where the channel kind of comes around as well directly into the outflow now you're not allowed back in the outflow but my guess would be there'd be a lot of fish stacked up on the mouth of that certain times of the year and we could take advantage of that stuff as anglers so we're going to go ahead and just stay on the right side of the lake here we're going to wrap around with this channel and we're going to get ourselves into some additional structure points we've got more porcupine cribs in about 12 feet of water you got more porcupine cribs here and about 10 feet of water we've got felled trees all along this shoreline as it wraps around you've got again future 100 porcupine cribs and 8 to 10 feet of water those are going to be going in at some point the channel wraps around you've got steak trees 23 feet of water porcupine cribs up in 10 feet you've got felt trees all along here and you're going to hit these random deep holes in kerwinsville and the deep hole looks like this so i'm just going to cut out to the footage here and as you guys can see the drop-off in this particular area goes down to about 44 feet well the deepest point in that hole in this body of water is 47 feet so you guys can get a feel for that and there's a couple of these really deep basins in kerwinsville lake and if you notice there's a lot of good fish marks there as well so when you find those deep basins on kerwinsville it's always a good area to take a look and maybe do some vertical jigging for some walleyes maybe you get into some schools of perch you could drop some live bait down there but these fish kind of relate to some of these deeper holes so when you see this area this is a good area to focus on so we talked about the porcupine cribs as we're coming around this bend um this point here we're going to talk about this a little bit more on the other side so we're going to kind of keep staying to the the northern end of the lake here or this upper shoreline as we work down here you guys can see the channel the channel kind of cuts and splits two different ways you've got some black bass nesting structures and about six to seven feet of water here and you've got 50 steak trees and about 21 feet of water off of the channel so as we continue to work down you've got 26 feet of water here the channel is going to run all the way down this way you've got future catfish spawning boxes and 4 feet of water they're going to be going in here we're going to notice a little inlet here or a little cove rather a little back water and as the channel wraps around we've got about 25 porcupine crib juniors and 12 to 15 feet of water and then the channel is going to continue around here and we're going to work our way over to porter run fishing hotspot so we made it up around porter run cody you want to tell us a little bit about porter run porter run is a little feeder stream that comes down through the town of lumber city uh coming down from the grampian area actually through lumber city uh it's just it's one of two feeder streams that come into the west branch of the susquehanna river here within the curbingsville lake area cool pretty sweet area we're gonna do some casting here looks like really good weeds what kind of weed is that looks like i'm not sure if that's the high drill or that's milfoil it looks like milfoil i mean i can't tell there's a hatch on top of the water yeah see that bug hatch feeder stream look how pretty the rocks are now notice here you've got felt trees all along the shoreline you've got access from the road up here and you've got 10 black bass nesting structures in about five feet of water so anytime you have an inlet coming into a body of water it's an area that you want to focus on all right guys let's continue on here the channel is going to wrap around and now we're going to kind of get into a very unique section of the lake here let's follow the channel so the channel is going to come right down through the middle of this particular area of the lake and we're actually going to jet through the train trestle now we're going to talk about this a little bit more but let's continue to work around 17 feet of water you got the channel to this northern end of the lake here or this shoreline we're going to call it northern end you've got some felt trees in here you've got the channel that wraps all the way around and then we're going to focus on this bottom end as the channel comes in you're going to run into the sand flats all the way down here so on paper the lake doesn't even run this far so now we're going to kind of walk through this end of the lake and work back towards the beach in the main launch so this is the furthest we're going to go here today on kerwinsville so we're what we're a couple hundred yards past the trestle roughly i don't even know how far that is about 200 yards yeah we're about 200 yards past the trestle this obviously runs way further up all the way to lumber city it actually runs beyond lumber city yeah let's go i knew it goes further all the way down to the chesapeake but what uh so just again like where would you consider the end of kerwinsville lake according to fish and boat commission the end of curvingsville lake is this this bend right here this turn um and then it goes back into the west branch of the susquehanna river um there's like you said earlier there's 790 acres in which creates the kerbinsville lake impoundment but then it goes back into the rust branch west branch of the susquehanna river and there's well over 2 000 boatable acres you can go as far upstream as the lumber city bridge which would be state route 729 beyond that you're going to need to be in a small watercraft such as a canoe or kayak and excess make that water accessible all right cool so here we are west branch of the susquehanna tail end of kerwinsville reservoir now this section here we've got a really awesome solid weed bed that jets out from the lake and as you can see from some of the video here these weeds are relatively thick so you're going to want to get on the outside edge of them you're going to want to fish the channel down here look for felt timber structure on both sides and really try to find any areas that you can get into those weeds or on the edge of those weeds and you're going to find fish relating to this particular area so as we wrap around here you've got this point again good weed bed all the way around this and then we're going to work back to the train trestle so the train trestle it's just an awesome awesome feature of this lake the train trussel extends all the way out and across and really kind of creates these little coves on both sides so what do we call this the train trestle yes all right so we're up here near the train trestle which we're getting towards the end of kerwinsville lake so the southern end here of this particular area you've got good weed beds all along this cove right here you've got felled trees along the train trestle here and now we're going to jump out to mr cody fine he's going to go ahead and explain to us why this weed bay hot spot is such a key element to kerwinsville lake we got this really awesome bay here though from the train trestle that works its way back to that corner cody what uh give me the lowdown on this bay this is i know from fishing up here there's a lot of good weeds in there there's a lot of good weeds um they're not they're not in big clumps they're they're spotty so you can cast in between the clumps of weeds and pull through them um real good area for multi-species um musky pickerel crappie and perch i've caught them all back in this bay uh it's just a real nice it's a shallow bay uh the average depth back here is like five to seven foot um it's always been a producer of fish every time i come to kerbinsville i always hit here as as well as multiple other guys that i know it's it's just a fun bay to fish cool it's definitely a beautiful area the train trestle there so as cody kind of mentioned here this would be a really awesome area to fish that five to seven feet of water really kind of punching baits in and out of the weeds maybe work some top water back in there anytime you get a bay like this it just has good weeds in it there's a lot of ways you can fish it in lots of species of fish to be caught up and down this entire area so really here you've got some timber and we're going to call this cover at the moment you've got good timber structure and good timber cover all the way down the shoreline awesome awesome weed bed in this area and then you've got the train trestle that jets out with some additional structure points whether it's timber whether it's cover in the weeds you know there's some things in the water there to look for and as we jump across here we go from that five to seven feet of water in this bay back across the 17 in the channel and then you've got like four in the upper echelon of this cove right here on the other side of the train trestle you've got 20 catfish spawning boxes you've got lots of good timber and weed structure in here as we work back we're going to start seeing this weed bed kind of come out and jet out i've got some decent footage of this area to show you guys so take a look at the weeds there you can see how thick these weeds are also keep in mind that this is a very shallow end of the lake so as we're working around here you might want to stay on the outside of these weeds good good weed beds good points we're going to come right up the lake and we're going to look at these 50 state trees in 15 and 19 feet of water on this side those are key elements man-made structure points as we continue to work upward here we've got 80 additional steak trees and 27 feet of water we've got future 20 rock rubble humps and 10 to 15 feet of water and we've got future 100 short vertical plank structures all along this stretch in the middle where you kind of have the channels branching off to the left and right now as we work our way up here we got one more really really awesome hot spot and that's the cliffs so let's go ahead and jump out to mr cody five he can give us a run down on the cliffs all right so this spot is called the cliffs right yeah this squad here is called the cliffs it's roughly 25 to 30 feet deep um a lot of guys that are into the the catfish world and you know target them they'll hit this spot here and the reason for that is the the cliffs kind of underwater so there's big holes in there where them catfish kind of lay and hang out so this is a big area for those guys to target you know target those catfish it's not necessarily my world but guys are real big into it here cool well i can see why people would come here to swim pretty cool area with the rocks and really good shot of the lake here so that's cool that's a cool tidbit all right let's keep moving here as we worked around the shoreline um you're gonna see a lot of like really cool structure points in here like the cliffs itself if you guys can get a good look at this there's a lot of timber there's a lot of cover in here there's steep drop-offs really solid catfish spot but then you've got some cover along here with some of the trees and some of the dead fall but we've got this lake view campsite project and really let's go ahead and jump back out to cody so he can explain what this means because this is going to be a really awesome element to this recreation area here in kerwinsville new lakeview project what's up with that the the lakeview project is uh if you look up through this this bank here behind me um you can see all that opened up dirt area we're expanding our campground from eight sites to roughly 20 to 22 sites um this embankment here used to be earlier this year used to be a bunch of different brush and locust and stuff growing on this bank and we've been slowly working at it throughout the season to open it up to enhance that name lake view um you know we're opening it to give the view of the lake um so this is a new project that we've been working on all season and it'll be in operation um to start the 2021 season there you go there you go more reason for you guys to come out here and check out the camping at kerwinsville lake all right so cody got to explain the lakeview campsite project really cool stuff from the lake recreation area and really the board just making camping much more enjoyable in this particular area so as we work around here we're going to get back to this point towards the main lake you've got a really solid weed bed here this weed edge is going to jet out you're probably going to be five to six to ten feet of water um it's probably eight to ten out here where these future porcupine cribs are gonna be um but you're looking at five to six and tight along these weeds and again you've got the black bass nesting structures you've got future 60 catfish spawning boxes when they put those in you've got 10 catfish spawning boxes already in there and 30 rock rubble humps on the edges of these weeds so this is a very good point to focus on but you've got to fish shallow here because this is a very shallow part of the lake one other thing to mention as we cut out the video there's a really nice little feature here kerwinsville lake has a dog swimming area i don't know if i can see it from here but there's a little yellow buoys cody just told me that's a dog swimming area pet lovers bring your pets to kerwinsville lake there's a dog swimming area right there so worth you guys bringing the pets out they can go out and do some swimming and this is just a nice little area for them to enjoy as well as the family so let's continue to work around this weed bed again future 100 porcupine cribs out here in the middle those are gonna be key when those go in um but for now we're gonna work down and we've got another element here we've got the beach we got kerwinsville beach here access to the swimming area fun for the whole family you come swimming here i'm not much of a swimmer [Laughter] i'm not either and fishing along the beach you know a lot of times in state parks or a lot of times in certain bodies of water sometimes the fish will relate to that sandy bottom and some of the sand runoff sometimes there's rocks in there kerwinsville is the same so not only do you have a really awesome recreation area here as you guys can see by the video clip you've got awesome fishing opportunities just outside the beach alright guys so this is going to bring us right back to the boat ramps so hopefully you guys found this information helpful we wanted to talk about kerwinsville and just share some of this information hopefully it'll prompt you to go out and check out the campsite whether that's a family camping trip there's a lot to do here with some of the horseshoe pits and things like that you know it's just a really nice recreation area for family and it's a really awesome opportunity for you to get out here and do some fishing so hopefully you guys found this information beneficial alright guys one more thing to talk about here is we've got the camp office and camp store right here in this particular area and this is really the main access road that's going to take you back into the campground so cody and i really want to spend a little bit of time talking about the campground to show you guys that um to give you some footage on it and hopefully you guys like this little tour of kerwinsville campground all right guys we're going to take a quick swing around the campground here at kerwinsville show you guys some of the amenities like the cabins there's a really awesome bath house a lot of great sites here for both tent and rv camping so that's what we're gonna do right now we're gonna just take a stroll around let you guys see that so you can come up here and check it out for yourself so really cool kerwinsville has cabins yeah curbing lake we have three cabins here in the campground we have a handicap one little sleep i believe four adults um comfortably the cabins two and number three will sleep four to six adults and two children um pretty nice setting where they're at you know quiet there's not a lot of neighbors and then with our you know campsites we have electric hookup only we don't have a full hookup setup where we have water and electric it's just electric only we offer a 30 and 50 amp service um and then we have a a dump station for your gray water and we offer a fully functional shower house nice um with hot hot and cold water a lot of activities within the campground to do there's a playground that's offered for the kids there's a pavilion that's offered if you're camping with you know multiple families you can access the pavilion to you know do a family dinner you know amongst you know multiple families these are the sites that are prized because they overlook our lake there you go you can see the lake there right out there look at that pretty sweet nice one thing we didn't touch base on today and i'd like to is uh kerbinsville here offers um a numerous amount of trails hiking trails um they range in difficulty levels from you know beginner style trails to the most advanced trails for your guys that do it on a regular basis there's just shy of 16 miles of trails 16 yep there's 16 miles of trails some of the trails are trails where you have a view of the water some of the trails are on side hills it just depends on the difficulty level and what
